Camera Raw missing color channel

I am using PSE9 for images from my Pentax K5. All updates have been installed.
The raw files (PEF) have always worked in Camera Raw.
Today however, I have opened some raw files and found that ACR is not showing the red channel in any images. The JPEG thumbnails in camera are displaying correctly.
I have also opened the same files with Pentax Digital Camera Utility 4.40 and it displays the images correctly. This confirms the data has been recorded - thank goodness it is not a capture problem.
Any suggestions and solutions as to what has happened to Camera Raw?
Thanks to all who consider my problem.

I have been using a Pantone Huey colorimeter for many years now with great effect.
Unfortunately, this appears to be the source of my problems although I'm not sure why it would suddenly fail.
When I factory reset the Huey, i.e. there is no calibrated monitor profile, it displays all images accurately. As soon as I calibrate the monitor, the colors display incorrectly again.
The latest version of the Huey software was made back in the days of Windows XP. Therefore, there is no guarantee it will work with Windows 7 although it has been doing so for some time.
It may be time to replace it with a Colormunki or Spyder4.
If I go ahead, I'll post the outcome.

camera raw missing from filters, how do I get it there?

If you have cs6 (may work with others but never tried).  A little trick I do to open my jpeg in camera raw is the following:
    1. In photoshop select File > Open
    2. Select the file you want to open in camera Raw
    3. In the format drop down at the bottom, change it to camera raw
    4. Hit open
that's it your in camera raw with the JPEG

  • Camera raw changes color in adobe bridge and photoshop

Hi all, I am quite new to use RAW. I have raw files that I want to edit. Unfortunately, the moment I click on the raw files, the color changes.
Is there anything I should do to the color setting?
I am using a canon 20d and Adobe Photoshop, Bridge CS 3 and Adobe Camere Raw 4.0

The image is indeed rife with red color.
The fact that the embedded JPEG isn't quite as oversaturated with red as Adobe's conversion with the lowest color temperature of 2000 just says that Canon's conversions have more range at the low-end of the color temperature setting.
This is the color from the embedded JPEG.  Clearly it's dominated by a reddish-orange color, though not as red as that from Adobe's software.
This is the color from Adobe Camera Raw's conversion at the (low-end minimum) color temperature of 2000:
This is the photo converted with Canon DPP using "click white balance" on the bridge beam on the left:
Note, however, that (though the dropper seems to have incredible range) DPP does not allow you to specifically SET a color temperature lower than 2500K, which yields this color:
The bottom line here is that the "Click White Balance" function in Canon's DPP has far more range than ACR, where even the white balance dropper "mins out" at 2000K.
That's something the Adobe folks may want to look into, to extend the range of ACR's capabilities to suit this kind of IR photography.

  • Problema Installazione Camera Raw e colori Lightroom 4?

Salve a tutti. . Potete aiutarmi per favore?

My student has been using Lightroom 4 with Photoshop CS5 on her Mac for well over a year. Because of the difference between the Camera raw version available to her in Photoshop CS5 and the raw process in Lightroom 4, she has been exporting her raw images

  • Change Adobe Camera Raw background color

Anybody know how to change the background color in Adobe Camera Raw from grey to white?

Unfortunately there is no option for changing the background color of the UI for ACR. However, this feature is available in Photoshop and Bridge.

  • Built-in "Camera RAW style" color correction for each clip in CS6

Camera RAW has the best sliders for image control. Super easy and ultra natural looking.
I mean if you want to fix White Balance with in-camera like precision or lift shadows or fix highlights Camera RAW is the quickest tool that produces amazing results.
I have compared Davinci Resolve, Phase One (Capture One), Adobe SpeedGrade and Color Finese. And the best "quick fix" results are archived in Camera RAW even with 8-bit TIFFs exported from Premiere's DSLR timeline.
The point is, why can't we add simple sliders for Temperature / Tint / Exposure / Contrast / Highlight / Shadows / Clarity  / Vibrance directly to Premiere's clip.
So the user will not waste time to export TIFFs to Camera RAW or DPX to SpeedGrade.
    Some more comments.
    1. Three Way Color Corrector contains too much submenus and often doesn't produces results wanted.
Wheel-type color mixers are more suitable for Secondary color correction in my opinion.
At first it nice to setup correct White Balance using sliders and only then make some sylish tuning with these wheels.
    2. It's a pity that Camera RAW exported sequences tend to flicker sometimes. I guess it's because of photo-like processing style. It adapts to every single image. Would be cool to have an option to disable this adapting feature, especially useful for timelapses. Have anyone encountered this problem with Camera RAW?
Maybe someone knows a plugin for Premiere and AE that has direct slider for Temperature and Tint?

@mandurphy: If you haven't already done so, you might want to submit a formal feature request: https://www.adobe.com/cfusion/mmform/index.cfm?name=wishform&loc=en
You're also welcome to post "Me too" in as many threads as you like, but doing that a hundred times will not get as much attention from the decision-makers in charge of the feature priorities as submitting a single genuine feature request.

  • Camera raw missing clarity tool

all of a sudden in my camera raw window i'm missing the clarity tool and i have no idea how to get it back? i think i might be missing another tool but i'm not sure. i tried reinstalling CS3 but no luck. has this happened to anyone else? any fixes?
    thanks!

Buko is correct. The number in the name of the preferences file does NOT match the actual plug-in version number.
    I attempted to report this
minor bug late last year, but the creator of ACR and Ps does not consider it a bug:

  • Adobe Camera Raw  for Nikon - generate JPEG with color off

    Hi,
I am learning Photoshop and Camera RAW. I am using CS2 and ACR 3.7 on Windows XP.
I have noticed that the JPEG file generated by CAMERA RAW has the color slightly off (towards the bluish direction).
This is what I did, I started Adobe Bridge, I opened up the Nikon RAW file (from D200) with Camera RAW and then generated the JPEG file without using any AUTO or custom setting (took the As SHOT setting). After the JPEG file is generated, I compared the JPEG file, with the file on Camera RAW window, the color of the pictures don't match up. So what you see on Camera RAW window is not what you get in JPEG. The color shown in the Camera RAW window is warmer than the JPEG file. I used the Widnows default jpeg viewer and the Arcsoft Editor to look at the JPEG file, and confirmed the color of the JPEG file is off from the original RAW filed viewed Camera RAW widnow.
However, when I opened that same JPEG file (generated by Camera Raw) in Adobe Photoshop, and the original RAW file (without any modification) in Photoshop, the color of the JPEG file matches up the color of the original RAW file only in Photogroup. I am confused now.
Why the color of the JPEG file (generated by Camera RAW) looks OK on photoshop, but it is off in other viewers (default Windows viewer or ArcSoft Editor). However, when I used PictureProject (supplied by Nikon) to generate the JPEG file from that same original RAW file (without any modification), and I looked at the JPEG file (generated by PictureProject) on Photoshop, Arcsoft Editor, and default Windows viewer, the color matches up to the original RAW file on all viewers. So the problem only happens to the JPEG file generated by Camera Raw. Any idea?
    Thanks,

When you saved out the JPEG in Camera Raw, what color space did you save it with?

  • Camera Raw Color Distortion?

I'm new to Photoshop. Currently, Im learning Photoshop through Adobe Photoshop CS6 Classroom in a Book. I found out that the camera raw plug-in seems weird.
    This is the original photo.
When I opened it in Camera Raw, the color of the photo distorted. ( I didn't do anything on it yet. )
Is it caused by software problems? Or did I accidentally tick something in the Setting/Preferences?
    Thanks for every helps.

    Thanks Guys,
    Conroy's answer solved my problem.
By the way, i found this small icon at the top-right of the photo in Mini-Bridge. What does it mean? It seems to open the photo automatically in ACR.

  • Camera Raw 6 - Question

I hear Camera Raw 6 is around the corner.  Cool!
I wonder whether any fundamental change has been made to change the way it responds to partial overexposure...  With my Canons at least, all the current versions of Camera Raw desaturate colors as soon as one of the color channels saturates.  Since we know that Canon's AA filter is bluish-green, this makes it highly likely the green and blue channels will saturate (max out) first before red.  As it should be, Camera Raw tries to recover at least some of the data using the red channel.
So, for example, if the green channel saturates, the subject will turn kind of gray instead of leaving the blue channel alone and having it be bright yellow.  Here's a graphic example:
A long time ago I recall corresponding with Thomas Knoll on this and I believe the thinking was that if the color can no longer be accurately determined because of one or two channel overexposure then the color will be desaturated so that it will not shift, and in a sense be made inaccurate.  I recall thinking that gray is a color too, but Camera Raw is what it is.
This philosophy may work fairly well for clouds in the sky, but it's not so good for some other things.  I think it also negatively impacts the way HDR images are assembled in many cases, as bright things end up with gray halos that don't mix well at all.
Any chance there's an option in ACR 6 to disable this desaturation behavior?  If not, could we please have one in the future?
    Thanks.
    -Noel

Thanks for your input, Curt, but I'm quite some distance beyond a basic understanding of the Bayer pattern at this point.
Re your comments on when new versions of Camera Raw are prepared, they are still adding features actively.  Camera Raw 6.1 specifically is the version I've heard is nearing release.
I'm hoping someone from Adobe with a significant depth of understanding of the innards of Camera Raw might comment on this.

  • Jpegs continue to open in Camera raw

I run CS5, after I  work my images up in camera raw, crop, color corrected, etc... and I save as a jpeg, it doesn't always hold the crop and then continues to automatically open in camera raw.  I was told once that meant that the images were not jpeg properly, but what do I do to remedy this, and has there been glitch in CS5, we also have problems with our brush and clone tool not working properly.

No glitch.  You probably have Camera Raw configured to open JPEGs.
Check Edit - Preferences - Camera Raw... in Photoshop, and look here:
You may want to set it to Disable JPEG support if you'd rather not open your JPEGs through Camera Raw.

  • Camera Raw 7.1 Columnar Color Artifacts

Adobe:  For some reason you wouldn't listen when these problems were reported during beta and you went ahead and released the new version, so I'm not sure I should even bother, but here goes:
Camera Raw 7.1 introduces columnar artifacts in the red color channel (that I've seen), apparently as a result of the operation of the new half-baked defringing features.  I've seen this in a number of images.
Here's a raw Canon EOS-40D file and associated XMP with which you can reproduce the problem. Look at the red channel in the blue water of the pool.
    http://Noel.ProDigitalSoftware.com/ForumPosts/IMG_5037.zip
Now convert the same file with version 7.0 (or 7.1 with the Defringe sliders set to 0) and compare the result.
Trouble is, without being able to use the Defringe (Purple/Green) features at all, and considering the Defringe:  All Edges feature has been removed, edge artifacts from the debayering process get to be unacceptable.
Let me spell out for you what you need to do, in case it isn't obvious:
    1.  You need to bring back the Defringe:  Off / Highlight Edges / All Edges feature that you had in 7.0 and earlier.
    2.  You need to fix this new slider-based defringe facility so that it doesn't do such nasty things to the image. I'd advise you to listen to Vit Novak's input on what else to do to it.
With BOTH of these things done, between the two one could actually hope to get an improved result over the conversions from 7.0.  Fixing the second alone won't cut it.
    -Noel

Back off?  I should heed your expert advice on avoiding confrontation, Jeff?    I have to assume by your unwavering support of Adobe on this issue that you are looking forward to having stylish artifacts like these in your own images.  I guess this will define your new style for 2012.  LOL
All the slack that's going to be cut on this has already been cut.
Hey, I could have just quietly dropped back to 7.0 and just have my own images be superior to those made by those using 7.1, but no - I chose to try to help Adobe by pointing out a problem to them here.
When I reported this problem during the beta, I was clearly ignored.  When I reported it again after the release, I was argued-with.
I don't need to be argued-with nor reasoned-with - Adobe needs to listen to people who know what they're talking about.  People not blindly praising the emperor's new clothes.
I don't need nor expect appreciation, but I had thought I might have earned enough respect around here that Adobe's first response wouldn't be "choose different settings, stupid".
An output image quality problem should be a release show-stopper. Experts like me and Vit telling Adobe that their latest color fringing reduction changes aren't working well enough should be considered seriously. Instead, it's just business as usual: Release whatever's in the pipeline.
Adobe's dropping quality standards are something I find myself wanting less and less to be associated with each passing day.
Just typing this message took me longer than it should have, because of this bogus forum software.

  • Camera Raw vs Lightroom Color Spaces

I photographed RAW image of a Gregtag color target with my Nikon D300 and opened it in camera raw in the ProPhoto Color space and adjusted the develop sliders so that the tone squares on the bottom row matched the ProPhoto values, (e.g approx 238,189,144,103,66,37) and ran the Robert Fors calibration script.
So far so good. I have read that all one needs to do is use the same settings in Lightroom. But when I opened the exact same RAW file in Lightroom and use the exact same develop and calibration settings that I used in ACR, it gives different values for the tone squares. And in fact the values are almost exactly the values for Adobe RGB (e.g. approx 242,200,159,121,84,53). And when I open that file in Photoshop from Lightroom using the ProPhoto color space option the value stay at the same Adobe RGB levels within the ProPhoto color space.
    What am I missing/doing wrong?

the values in lightroom are not based on prophotoRGB, but on a prophotoRGB-derived space with the same primaries but with a sRGB tone curve. Since adobeRGB has almost the same tonecurve as sRGB, your values came out close. Bottomline is that the values do not correspond to the ppRGB values in ACR.

  • Camera Raw 8.7.1 color issues

After the recent camera raw update to 8.7.1 I have noticed some pretty bad color shifts between camera raw and photoshop cs6. The colors in camera raw look very saturated and then when moving into photoshop the saturation shift is pretty dramatic. I never had these issues before the update. I have attached a screenshot illustrating the color issue. I am working on a very good monitor ( NEC PA 242W ) and it is color calibrated using NEC Spectraview calibration system. I have double checked my color setting in photoshop and camera raw to make sure I was viewing the same color space. I am just wondering if this is maybe a bug in the update and others are experiencing the same issues or if I am just missing something.
I would also add that I am using the Creative Suite CS6 and not CC. If that makes a difference.

Thanks ssprengel for the suggestions and running a side by side yourself. I went through all my settings and applied your suggestions and did a side by side each time. I even uninstalled the entire creative suite on my system then reinstalled and updated and I still get the same outcome. It was fine yesterday with the previous version of ACR. It seems like the updated version is not showing the image preview in any color space. When I switch the color space in the workflow options the histogram changes but it doesn't seem to affect the preview window. And yes the preview button was checked on it was just when I was using the screen grab tool in windows it took focus away from the application so that is why the settings appear grayed out. I have attached more screen grabs below illustrating all my settings. Also here is some system info if anyone out there has a similar setup and would be willing to test.

  • Camera Raw 4.6 Color Conversion Issues

I'm using CS3. In the Camera Raw 4.6 import window the color looks great. When I get the image into Photoshop the color looks horrible. I know it's the color profile that Raw is assigning. My question... is there a way to disable the color profile conversion coming from Camera Raw?
I've always had great results without using profiles and now this alters my color. I've even tried to go in and force the image to use a different color profile but at this point the damage has been done by the camera raw plugin.

"I've been doing professional color correction for about 15 years and know how to use the programs without the use of color profiles."
You're always using profiles no matter what, both a source and and destination for everything from your monitor to working RGB, CMYK and Lab to output profiles for proofing and print.
You need good profiles to define the hardware devices and color spaces. Without them, it's all only a guess.
"When I say "great color", I mean to say Photoshop doesn't adjust my color with profiles because I have profiles disabled."
There's not really a way to disable profiles in Photoshop. You can sort of turn them off, but the default profiles in your Color Settings dialog are still in effect no matter what. In fact, you can't even display in image in RGB or CMYK without at least two profile, and more often three.
Just having profile in the loop doesn't mean that Photoshop will "adjust" your colors. Photoshop will only do what you tell it to do.
"My monitor is corrected and I have no need to use profiles since I understand UCR & GCR conversion for printing."
You monitor is corrected? How? Have you calibrated it? After the calibration Photoshop needs, you guessed it, a monitor profile, in order to properly display your images. And how to you get from the RGB of your digital captures to the CMYK you need for offset? Yeah. Profiles. Even if you're using the archaic and outdated Custom CMYK to set your total ink and black generation, you are still in effect, using profiles. You are using the parameters defined there in the same way custom measurement are used in ProfileMaker to generate a custom ICC profile. It's just not as accurate.
"Also, when I have something printed somewhere I have them disable their profiles to provide true color. And I also force acrobat to use my color maps when building pdfs so my printer has no need for conversion of any kind."
How you do know you've made the right conversion for that printer. Most printer just ignore embedded profiles anyway, but including proper output profiles can enable them to display the files correctly on their calibrated screens, and for the more advanced printers, that embedded profile can allow them to use Device Link Profiles to convert your files to custom press or proofing profiles.
"My complaint was that the Camera Raw Plug-in forces me to convert to a profile with 4 possible choices. I was asking if there is a way to disable this?"
It's actually a choice of four different profiles not a profile with four choices. The choices are based on color gamut and gamma in order of increased gamut. There is no way to disable them. What would you put in their place? There are raw converters that will let you convert the raw data to any color space on output, including CMYK. Maybe that would be more appropriate for you. CaptureOne and Raw Developer are the two that come to mind, but they all use profiles.
Hell, even in the golden age of the drum scanner, scanners like the Hell 3010 without even being able to see an image on screen, used profiles, only they called them by a different name - lookup tables. Lookup tables for scanner input and characteristic lookup tables for the analog proofing system the house used.
"I found if I convert using the Adobe 1998 profile the color comes out close, I simply have to increase the saturation to return to the original optical image values. I would however like to bypass this step."
It sounds to me like you need to spend a few weeks getting up to date with the tools that are available now. Between hardware monitor calibration and custom CMYK output profiles that take into account different ink limits and black generation, you're missing out on a boatload of fun.
A lot of things have changed in prepress in the last fifteen years not the least of which is that little number called Direct to Plate. Since everone has gone DTP, the one thing that has gone by the wayside are any kind of overall proofing standards. Where you used to be able to send the same file to ten different printers and get back proofs that were extremely close, now they're all over the map. The only way to effectively deal with this is with custom profiles for the high end digital proofers that printers use today.
Sure, you still need to take into account the specifics of total ink, highlight and shadow values, but you simply can't rely on the positively ancient ink definitions in Custom CMYK to work very well for any of today's output. Unless, of course, you and your clients don't mind going through rounds and rounds of proofs.
