Camera Raw on a Netbook

Don't know if this should be on the feature request forum or here in the general discussion?
However as it would not be a 'feature' more a stand alone application then this might be the best place -
With the rise of the use of Netbooks, running bare bones applications, would it be possible to have Camera Raw as a stand alone application?
So that event/press/holiday photographers could have a workable system - most netbooks come with 160gig hard drives, plenty of space for a days work, all that is needed is some picture editing software which works (GIMP and Picassa are not in the ball park unfortunately) FTP and Emailing software already exists. ITPC captioning software already exists. Bridge is still slow in comparison to PhotoMechanic.
Lightroom needs a higher screen resolution than is available on most Netbooks 1024x600. It also does a LOT of stuff that just isn't needed when you are out on the road.
I am well aware of the limitations of using a small screen, with limited colour profiling capabilities, the slowness of the Atom chip etc. however the needs of the 'Road Warrior' are well met by Netbooks due to their size and long battery life, existing software other than a working image editor.
Of course it would not be a massive market, however it would be a premier one and I suspect a new one, as the people buying 'Camera Raw LIte'!! would of course have either LR or PS one their full sized systems, 'CRL' would do one thing and one thing well and fast with minimum resources.
There are people who do use CS 4 on Netbooks and they say that is runs ok, however if there was a 'bare bones' application which did one thing and did it well and at speed, then there is, I'm sure a definate market. It could even be a testing ground for an iPhone application - you may laugh but PhoJo is used on an iPaq handheld. http://www.idruna.com/pocketphojo.html
If any of the Camera Raw team wish to contact me off list, I would be happy to talk through a few ideas.

Any thoughts Eric or Thomas?
Is it possible?
I'm pretty sure that there is a market, I know that the photographers working in London are seriously looking for a 'better' solution than FULL Photoshop.
Whilst it is workable, there is certainly a speed hit, I would assume due to the way PS is written and it's 'expected' use against a Netbook running an Atom chip - a couple of years ago 1.6 GHz was a pretty respectable chip speed and PS just flew along.
The netbook is the fastest selling category of computer and it's market continues to grow - out of that market I would imagine that there are a sizeable number of people who would like a 'simple' photo editing program optimised for a simpler workflow. In addition to news, wedding and event photographers out there, there must be 'millions' of amatuer photographers who go on holiday who want a photo editing system  which would work on a netbook.
Thanks for any feedback

  • Adobe Camera RAW in Elements 8

Hi, I have just purchased and installed PSE 8.  I've also got some tutorials on disc from a number of photography magazines as I am interested in editing photos using Camera RAW and PSE 8.
For some reason I cannot open and files with Camera RAW version 5.5.  I have no idea how to update the software as I am new to this, does anyone know which version of Camera RAW I need to open files with a .DNG extension or .PEF (Pentax RAW) extension?
I have tried following the steps to open files in Camera RAW but they just open into PSE 8 Editor in which I cannot adjust things such as white balance.
This is becoming very frustrating and I am already regretting buying this program.
Hopefully someone out there has more experience and knowledge than me and can help?

What is your screen resolution on the computer you're running PSE8 on?
ACR requires a vertical screen resolution of 768.  If you're on a small laptop or a normal-sized netbook, PSE will skip the ACR-user-interface and go directly into the editor.
The update for ACR will be on http://www.adobe.com/downloads/updates/ and choose Camera RAW - Windows/Mac at the top, and then after choosing the ACR version, the page that comes up should have a link for a PSE-specific install process.  The text on the main ACR update page will have the Photoshop instructions so you have to look for a link for the PSE instructions.  It should involve downloading a ZIP, extracting the files, and replacing the plug-in file manually.

  • Adobe Camera Raw Interface - Can anyone help?

I have Photoshop Elements 9 installed on my PC running under XP. I have version 6.5 of Camera Raw installed.
My camera is a Nikon D60 which records its Raw images as .NEF. When I open a Raw file in PSE9 the Camera Raw Interface
does NOT open. When I click to open a Raw file there is usually a delay before a small rectangular box appears headed Adobe
Photoshop Elements with the text stating Reading Camera Raw Format, there is a row of green boxes to show the progress. When
complete the image is displayed in the panel and also in the small panel underneath. When I point the cursor over the image in the
lower panel the file name is shown as Whatever.NEF but no adjustment controls are shown.
Assistance would be much appreciated, Thanks.

This can occur if your screen-resolution is smaller than 768 pixels high.  There is a minimum screen height required to display the ACR controls and if that is not satisfied, then ACR just opens the RAW file w/o showing the adjustment interface.  Commonly Netbooks or very small laptops have this issue.  What is the screen resolution you are using on your PC’s monitor?

  • How can I open raw images in Camera RAW on a small / low resolution screen?

When traveling, I use Photoshop Elements 8 on a small netbook.  RAW files open directly in Elements editor, bypassing the Camera RAW utility.  Is this because of the size and resolution of my computer (1024 x 600 max)?  Is there a way to use the RAW editor on this netbook (aside from connecting it to a larger monitor)?

Yes, that's why and  no, sorry, there isn't a workaround unless you can get your screen res higher, which you probably can't. The window won't open because it can't fit.

  • Camera raw in Elements 12 - Using the database instead of xmp sidecar files

    PSE12 ACR
Is there somewhere some documentation about using the option to save the ACR settings in a database rather than in xmp sidecar files ?
I have found the location of the 'Database' file in C:/Users/[my name]/AppData/Roaming/Adobe/CameraRaw/
    Several questions:
    - how to ensure that the 'Database' is backed up with the built-in backup process in the Organizer ?
    - that Database seems to be independent of the catalogs
    - How is the Database updated if you move or rename files from the Organizer ?
    - What happens if you already have xmp sidecar files when you choose the option of the Database in the ACR dialog ?
    - If you upgrade catalogs from Elements to Lightroom, are the settings saved in the database recognized by Lightroom ?

What is your screen resolution on the computer you're running PSE8 on?
ACR requires a vertical screen resolution of 768.  If you're on a small laptop or a normal-sized netbook, PSE will skip the ACR-user-interface and go directly into the editor.

  • Camera raw in pse 9

After re-installing pse 9 and the camera raw plug in, I have been unable to open raw files to make adjustments.  When I open a raw file in my editor it says "reading camera raw" but then never opens with the option to make the usual adjustments.  Can anyone help me figure this out?  Thanks!

    Hi,
You should be able to open a 40D Raw file with that version of ACR.
Does the image not open at all? If you are using a netbook or similar with a small screen, a RAW file will sometimes open with a default conversion so that you can't use the normal ACR tools.
What operating system are you using?
What is your screen resolution in pixels?

  • Camera Raw Apparently Missing On Second Installation Of Elements 10

I have installed Elements 10 onto my desktop which works fine. When opening a .NEF file or when opening a JPEG using 'Open As Raw', the Camera Raw interface comes up.
I have also installed Elements 10 onto my netbook. Whilst the prgram itself works fine, the Camera Raw interface doesn't appear to come up when loading .NEF files or opening JPEGS as 'Open As Camera Raw'. I have downloaded and installed the latest Camera Raw from the Adobe website.
Can anyone supply any reasons for this and how I solve the problem?
    Many thanks.

It is fequently updated to accomodate newer camera models to it'll be a good idea to update it as well.
Also see http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/901/cpsid_90141.html#main_Confirm_a_correct_installation_ to make sure that it the plugin is installed properly.

Have you set the program to open directly with either the Editor or Organizer? If so click on the home button (house symbol near top right) and choose Photoshop Elements welcome Screen. Then try the three keys with one click on the edit button.
Before doing that make sure the program closed down properly by clicking Ctrl+Alt+Delete. Click n the applications tab and highlight any Adobe application and then click the End task button.
Also are you trying to open a file from the Organizer. Have you tried going to a folder and right clicking on a NEF file and choosing open with Photoshop Element Editor?
If non of that works you may need to uninstall and then reinstall.

  • Camera Raw - Russia,

Can you help me to open special window for Raw files, because on my little PC I can't open it. Tryed to find any settings for Camera Raw files but it didn't work out. Please, please help me =))

Your screen must be at least 800 pixels tall or you won't see the raw converter. If you can, set your screen resolution higher. If you have a netbook, this is just a limitation of the short screen--no raw converter and no advanced downloader window.

  • Adobe Bridge in Photoshop - How to install Bridge and camera raw? And what is it all about?

Hi everyone! I am actually in love with this adobe photoshop. I used PSCS2 before, but later on upgraded to CS4. But I feel tired in upgrading to CS5.
One time, I found a tutorial in youtube about camera raw, and would really want to use it. But I was wondering how to install the camera raw. I believe camera raw is a plugin? so I downloaded the plugin here, installed it in my PS. I downloaded a file Camera Raw.8bi and paste it on my C drive - C:\Program Files\Adobe\Photoshop CS4\Plug-ins\File Formats.
I now am very confused, how will I open it? I do not have adobe bridge!  After I installed the camera raw, I opened my PS. I clicked the file>then browse in bridge. I had an error, it's "error 2 photoshop11 undefined". Which is what I thought, I might have done something wrong with installing it.
My question is, do you still need adobe bridge installed in order to use camera raw?
If yes, how does it work? How am I suppose to open camera raw?
If no, how am I going to open camera raw without bridge?
And also, where will I download adobe bridge? I cannot find one here for CS4, only adobe bridge for CS5. I am wondering, is it okay to install adobe bridge CS5 and use it with my PS CS4?
    I badly need help!

WebDAV (Web-based Distributed Authoring and Versioning) is a set of extensions to HTTP/1.1.
The main difference from FTP as far as I can see is that it allows you to edit documents on a remote web server.
WebDAV was used by the Apple server - MobileMe but is not generally supported by hosting services.
Using WebDAV you can mount a directory locally. This was how iDisk worked on your Mac and you could drag files onto it to upload them to the remote directory.
With WebDAV, a number of users can share a directory which is why its used in local networks but presents security problems when using a remote server.
If you are into file sharing rather than publishing, Dropbox or its new rival SugarSync are more appropriate.

  • I am unable to open raw files from my Canon T1i in Adobe Camera Raw of my version CS3 of Photoshop.  I have tried to update my ACR by downloading version 4.6 from the Adobe website but I am still unable to open raw files, just JPEG.  Is there a way to use

I am unable to open raw files taken on my Canon Rebel T1i in my version of Photoshop CS3.  When I import raw files into Bridge they come up as patches with CR2 on them and when clicked on, a notice comes up stating that Photoshop does not recognize these files.  I tried to update my Adobe Camera Raw by downloading version 4.6 from the Adobe Website, but when I clicked on the plus-in, I got another message that Photoshop does not recognize this file.  I spoke with a representative from Canon who said that I could not update CS3 and that I should subscribe to the Cloud.  I would prefer to use my CS3, if possible.  Can anyone advise me what to do?

The T1i was first supported by Camera Raw 5.4 which is only compatible with CS4 and later

    Camera Raw-compatible Adobe applications
    Some options:
    Upgrade to CS6
    Join the Cloud
Download the free Adobe DNG converter, convert all T1i Raw files to DNGs then edit the DNGs in CS3

  • I am trying to open CR2 files from a Cannon EOS 1DX camera in Photoshop CS6 and I have already updated the Camera Raw Plug in but Photoshop is still giving me the cannot open files dialog box? Help?

I am trying to open CR2 files from a Cannon EOS 1DX camera in Photoshop CS6 and I have already updated the Camera Raw Plug in but Photoshop is still giving me the cannot open files dialog box? Help?

Canon 1DX support was added to ACR in version 6.7, 7.1.  An updated CS6 should be at level ACR 8.6.  If your ACR is not at level 8.6 try using CS6 menu Help>Updates.  If that does not install ACR 8.6 try downloading the ACR and DNG 8.6 converter and see if ACR 8.6 will install into your CS6.

  • Cannot Use Camera Raw out of LightRoom 4

Below is a lengthy dialogue that I just had with Tech Support via Chat regarding accessing Camera Raw directly out of LightRoom 4.  The end result is that it can't be done.  LightRoom 4 has it's own "Develop" section and if you try to "Edit in: PhotoShop 6" the RAW image will bypass Camera Raw and open directly into PhotoShop.  Something that I was surprised at and frustrated by.  I thought for sure I was missing somehting.
I do not recommend buying LightRoom other than a means of "organizing" our images.  I simply use Bridgne and am able to open a Canon "CR2" Raw file directly into Camera Raw and then after making my adjustments directly into PhotoShop.  LightRoom lacks Layers, Paths and Channels and a host of other wonderful adjustment / manipulation capabilites not found in LightRoom.
So, if you are like me and want to use Camera Raw prior to going to PhotoShop then LightRoom will not get you there.  I spent a tremendous amount of time researching it thinking I must be missing something and then I contacted Support via Chat and we went through changing %AppData%, which only resulted in me losing all my PhotoShop Preferences!  A total waste of the Technician's time and mine.
I share the below chat with you only to show you the ludicrous amount of time wasted when the answer remains the same:  YOU CANNOT ACCESS CAMERA RAW DIRECTLY OUT OF LIGHTROOM 4
Thank you for choosing Adobe. A representative will be with you shortly. Your estimated wait time is 0 minute(s) and 3 second(s) or longer as there are 1 customer(s) in line ahead of you.
You are now chatting with 'Soumyadeep'
Soumyadeep: Hello. Welcome to Adobe Technical Support.
    Soumyadeep: Hi Fred!
Fred: Hi there my friend. I am trying to use Lightroom 4, but frankly am not happy with the way it handles RAW files.
Fred: I cannot open a Canon ".cr2" RAW file directly into Camera Raw from LightRoom.
Soumyadeep: I have received your query. Please allow me a moment to verify your account and to review the details of your request.
Fred: Thanks. I have also gone through all of the information I can find in the "Help Menu" looking up everything. Can't find a thing on LightRoom 4. I did not have this problem with Lightroom 3.
Fred: The RAW file that it references is "DNG".
Soumyadeep: I understand that you are unable to preview cr2 raw images in Lightroom 4, am I correct?
Fred: No, I can preview it, but when i want to open it the only choice I am given is CS6. I cannot open it into Camera Raw and it actually choses a completely different and inappropriate plug in from NIK Software.
    Soumyadeep: Thank you for confirming.
Fred: I know I can change that in the "Prefernces" in Lightroom 4 but I can't find Camera Raw to select as the choice.
Soumyadeep: I will be glad to assist you with this.
Soumyadeep: May I have the serial number of the product please?
Fred: I just checked again and it is set to a NIK Software plugin as an external software to open the file.
Fred: Yes, let me get it for you.

Soumyadeep: There you can locate the serial number which you have registered.
Fred: OK, so you don't need it now. It isn't in a format that I can copy and paste.
    Fred: 116040070815784336099081
Soumyadeep: Since it was registered in your Adobe account we can get the information from there.
Soumyadeep: Thank you for the serial number.
Soumyadeep: Fred, I would like to inform you that all the raw edit options you will get in Lightroom develop module.
Fred: I hope I copied it correctly it is presented so small.
    Fred: OK, just a second.
Fred: So, I go to "Develop" it will open in Camera Raw 7.01?
Fred: Frankly, this is the reason that I have just been using Bridge is because of the seemingly lack of coherent connection between LightRoom 4 and PhotoShop CS6.
Soumyadeep: I would like to inform you that you will not have any separate camera raw plugins for Lightroom. Since Lightroom will not require a camera raw converter.
Fred: At least I can open into Camera Raw and make the necessary adjustments and it will load in to PhotoShop.
Fred: OK, then why when opening a "RAW" image out of LightRoom does it go directly to CS6 bypassing Camera Raw?
Fred: Not allowing all of the wonderful adjustment toos, particularly the new ones in Camera Raw. I just don't understand the disconnect.
Soumyadeep: Fred, may I know which product you are referring as  "CS6"?
Fred: If I had wanted to process all my images in LightRoom I would not have wasted my money on CS6. Does that make sense?
    Fred: PhotoShop CS6
    Fred: Or PhotoShop 6 Extended
Soumyadeep: Thank you for the information.
Fred: The question still remains "Why does LightRoom 4 only recongize DNG files and not other RAW file formats and not allow them to be opened into Camera Raw?"
Fred: I don't want to process my images in LightRoom 4. I want to catalog and sort them. I want to process the RAW files from Canon in Camera Raw and then move on to PhotoShop 6 Extended.
Fred: So, what you are telling me is that I can't open a RAW file in LightRoom into Camera Raw. Simply stated.
Soumyadeep: Fred, I can understand your concern. Lightroom will not require a camera raw converter.
Soumyadeep: May I have the name of the camera model you are referring?
Fred: Two camera models: EOS 5D Mark II and EOS 60D
Soumyadeep: Please so that I can check further and try to troubleshoot your issue.
Soumyadeep: .Thank you for the information.
Fred: Both are listed as supported by Adobe PhotoShop and Camera Raw. I found that in my research.
    Soumyadeep: Okay.
Soumyadeep: Please close all the Adobe applications.
Fred: I simply want to go from LightRoom 4 directly to Camera Raw 7.01 and then onto PhotoShop 6 Extended. Seems pretty straight forward and logical to me. Then again I'm not Adobe.
Fred: OK, just a moment and I'll do that.
    Soumyadeep: Click on Start.
Soumyadeep: Fred, may I know what operating system you are using?
Fred: I am working on Windows 7 64 bit operating system.
Fred: I have closed all applications from Adobe.
Soumyadeep: Thank you for the information.
    Soumyadeep: Click on Start.
Soumyadeep: Just type %Appdata% in the search box and hit the enter key.
Fred: Ok, Im pretty computer savy so just tell me where you want to go.
Soumyadeep: Double click on Adobe folder.
    Fred: Done
Soumyadeep: In that folder you will have a folder CameraRaw. Please rename the folder as CameraRawold.
    Fred: Done
Soumyadeep: In that folder you will have a folder Adobe Photoshop CS6. Please rename the folder as Adobe Photoshop CS6old
Soumyadeep: After renaming the images please close the page and try to open a raw file and let me know the exact result.
    Fred: Done
Fred: Just a moment. I have renamed CameraRawold and Adobe6Old. i am going to navigate to my external drive and click on a RAW File
    Soumyadeep: Okay.
Soumyadeep: Let me know the status.
Fred: It is opening PhotoShop 6 Extended.
Fred: I can change the properties of the file to open in another program if that is where we are going.
Fred: It also created an error that stated that it recognized graphic software that is not completely supported and PhotoShop is not opening normally.
Fred: Given a little more time it opened in Camera Raw.
Soumyadeep: Fred, once more step you need to perform as you got an error regarding graphic software.
Soumyadeep: Please try to work on the Camera Raw and let me know it is working fine or not.
Fred: And I lost my presets.
Fred: OK, where does this leave us?
Fred: With regards to LightRoom 4?
Soumyadeep: Fred, you wanted to open the raw images in Camera raw option instead of Photoshop CS6, right?
Fred: Camera Raw appears to be functiong fine.
    Soumyadeep: Great!
Soumyadeep: Please close all the Adobe application.
Soumyadeep: Re launch Photoshop and type CNTRL+ K.
Soumyadeep: Let me know once you are done.
Fred: Checking the "CR2" files out of Canon the dafault to open is with PhotoShop 6
Fred: Ok, let me close all of them.
    Fred: OK, closed sir.
Soumyadeep: Please navigate to Performance tab.
Fred: "Performance Tab" in what program?
Soumyadeep: Re launch Photoshop and type CNTRL+ K
Soumyadeep: A new window will pop up "Preference"
Fred: Just a second it is opening. Thanks for help.
Fred: I am now at the Prefernces box. Performance Tab
    Soumyadeep: You are welcome.
    Soumyadeep: Correct.
    Fred: OK, I'm in Preferences
Soumyadeep: Please let me know Use Graphics Processor is checked or unchecked.
Fred: It is checked. I do know that on this machine that the graphics processor is not fully supported due to a lack of a separte video card.
Soumyadeep: Okay. Please do check once that the graphic drives are updated or not.
Soumyadeep: Fred, I hope now your are able to open the raw images in camera raw as you were referring?
Fred: Just a second. Driver software is up to date.
Fred: Let me open LightRoom 4 and see where it goes. Just a second.
    Soumyadeep: Sure.
Fred: Lightroom is taking a long time to open now.
Fred: Now I'm getting the message that it is not responding.
Fred: OK, it finally opened. Just a second.
    Soumyadeep: Okay.
Soumyadeep: Please let me know the result.
Fred: In light room when I select "Edit In PhotoShop 6" it is going directly to Photoshop 6 and not opening Camera Raw. Still.
Fred: So, my friend. We are still back to the original question and now I have to reload all of my preferences lost due to the change in AppData. LOL!
Fred: I guess I can organize all I ant in LightRoom and still use Bridge to edit and work on my images.
Fred: Sorry! Organize all I want and still edit out of Bridge.
Soumyadeep: Fred, I am sorry to inform you that when you will open the images from Lightroom it will not require the camera raw and also when you will try to open the images in other software from Lightroom it will directly open in that software. Since Lightroom itself works as a Came

Jim, thank you for an excellent responce.  I truthfully had researched the "Help" section on LightRoom and PhotoShop and found nothing that even remotely resembled your straight forward and easy to follow directions.  After upgrading to CS6 and LightRoom 4 I am delighted with all of the new features that Adobe created in PhotoShop.  I'm not sure that LightRoom 4 was as great an advancement as PhotoShop itself.
I am certainly going to give your solution a try and see how it works out for me.   I concur that I probably do not fully understand and appreciate the relationship between the two programs.  Today was my attempt of gaining a better insight to that relationship.  Thank you for your response!

  • Adobe Bridge CS6, Camera Raw

    Hello,
    I need urgently help.
I'm working on a MacBook Pro with Adobe Bridge CS6 since more than 1 year, using Camera Raw, v 8.6.0.254 without any problems.
Last month I bought a Mac Book Air and installed Photoshop Elements 12, Adobe Bridge CS6 and Photoshop CS6. But I'm still missing the possibility to open my pictures in Camera Raw.
After downloading the actual version 7.01 of Camera Raw from the website of Adobe.com and trying to install it I got the following error report:
    UPDATE FEHLGESCHLAGEN;
Updates konnten nicht installiert werden. Dieser Path ist für Sie nicht geeignet.
Name of the downloaded program is: AdobeCameraRaw-7.1-mul-AdobeUpdate.
What shall I do to get Camera Raw running?
Thanks so much for your help

What camera  and version of ACR?

  • Camera Raw Preferences in Adobe Bridge CS6

I can click on Camera Raw Preferences from the Adobe CS6 Menu, but nothing happens. No error meesages come up, but nothing happens.
I recently installed ACR7.3. I did have some problems getting ACR7.3 installed. The updater from Photoshop and Bridge didn't seem to install it.  I had to download ACR7 and install it.
After the successful install of ACR7.3,  I can double click on an image in Adobe Bridge CS6 and it will open the raw image in ACR7.3 in Photoshop CS6.
The other annoyance is that the images for my RAW files for my Panasonci GH3 don't display in Adobe Bridge. They appear as a blank icon
    I am running on a Mac OS X 10.6.8 64 bit
    Adobe Bridge CS6 5.0.0.399
    Adobe Camera Raw 7.3.0.71
    Adobe PS C6 13.0.4  x64
I do have older versions of Adobe CS5 and CS4 that I have never removed. I've never had problems before. And didn't need the space so I just left them.
Any ideas of why Adobe Bridge CS6 and ACR7.3 aren't in sync? - Thanks Rod

Ok, everything was ok until I rebooted my machine. Now when I open Adobe Bridge CS6, The Raw images show up initially. But when Adobe Bridge finally gives me control, the images have become blank icons again. I've tried the CommandOptionShift and it does not help.  It was fine for two weeks and now I can't get the raw images to stay.
Here is what I see as Adobe Opens the older. The Raw images are viewable.
Now this is how they look after Adobe Bridge has finished opening and I can click on something:
Where do I go from here?
