Camera Raw shrinks my 23MB cr2 file to a 7MB jpg...

I am trying a demo version of Photoshop CS5 and I like it so far.  I am mainly using Bridge to edit my .cr2 photos and convert them to .jpg files.  I am noticing that my .cr2 files start out around 23mb (I have a Canon 7D) and after tweaking color, sharpness, etc - not cropping - the files saves as a 6-8mb .jpg file.  When I Save Image, I have Quality cranked up to Maximum (10).  Am I missing something?  Does this program really compress my file 60%?  Any advice on how to save a larger jpg would be appreciated...

Why TIFF and not .PSD, Jeff?
If you want to save a compressed edited file as a future master from which to derive other work, consider saving as a Photoshop native format .PSD file at 16 bits/channel color depth.  The .PSD format has lossless compression, and certainly a lot of apps know how to open .PSD files.
You really proabably don't want to save a "developed" copy as a JPEG for use as input for further editing.
I have to ask, why save as another format at all?  Camera Raw will open your file again with the same parameters as last time (it remembers them individually for each image).  Why not just start afresh from your .CR2 file when you want to do further work?  That's what I do.

  • Camera Raw not working/recognising CR2 files - CS5, Mac

I cannot get Camera Raw to work. It worked before but took some fiddling around to get it to work. I am using CS5 on a Mac. My camera is supported by the version of Camera Raw I have and it is the latest update for CS5. Help please.

    Hi there
    Thank you for your questions.
    I am using Mavericks.
    Camera is a Canon 6D.
Camera Raw is 6.7.1.340. According to Adobe my camera should be recognised by this.
This is the message I get when I try to open a CR2 file.
Could not complete your request because the file appears to be from a camera model which is not supported by the installed version of Camera Raw. Please visit the Camera Raw help documentation for additional information.
Yes, all Readable Documents is selected in the first drop-down menu. Bottom drop-down menu is Camera Raw.
In Bridge the CR2 files appear as white rectangles instead of images.
I realise that I can convert my CR2 files to DNG but from what I have read on Adobe information I understand that this is not a requirment as Camera Raw should work without having to convert every image to DNG first - or am I completely misunderstanding this?

  • Canon 6D, Bridge CS5, Camera raw 6.7.1 -- cr2 files not shown

I use Bridge CS5 with camera raw 6.7.1 in combibnation with a canon 6D and a canon 5D Mark2. The raw files from the 5D are shown in bridge, the raw files from the 6D are not. There is just an icon. The camera raw add-on is the latest usable update for Windows, the canon 6d is listed as compatible. Has anyone an idea what to do?

The Canon 6D id NOT supported by ACR 6.7.1. It was supported for the very first time in ACR 7.3 whch requires CS6 to run.
Therefore you will never be able to open raw CR2 files from the 6D directly in CS5.
If you do not plan on upgrading, you can download the free, stand-alone Adobe DNG Converter 8.3 (always use the latest version, it's not tied to your version of Photoshop at all), install it like any other application and then run it on each batch of CR2 files to convert them to raw DNG files that you can then open in your version of Photoshop and ACR.

  • CS3, camera raw 4.4 & vista: CR2 files

When I try to open CR2 files from Canon 40D I am getting "cannot complete your request because it is not the right kind of document." I use windows vista. I have downloaded the latest updates to CS3 and camera raw. I had this problem with CS2, read the forums, downloaded a trial version of CS3, updated everything and it worked fine. So I went ahead and purchased CS3. only to find that I can no longer access my CR2 files. Any suggestions. please?
    thanks.

    Shane,
The Camera Raw plug-in is updated approximately 4 times each year, and has been updated a number of times since CS3 was released. The latest officially released version is available here:
    http://www.adobe.com/products/photoshop/cameraraw.html
Additionally, there is a beta version of Camera Raw 4.6 available here:
    http://labs.adobe.com/wiki/index.php?title=Camera_Raw_4.6
Both of these versions support your camera. The latest release, which is in beta, works well. I think it is primarily in beta form so that Adobe can get feedback on the newly supported cameras. I have not found any problems with it.
On either one of those referenced webpages there are complete instructions on how to install the new plug-in. It would be senseless to repeat those instructions here. Just be advised that you need to follow those instructions precisely and REPLACE the existing plug-in in order for it to work properly. Do not rename the old version, do not put it in a subfolder, or camera raw will cease to function.
Also, when Camera Raw 4.6 is finally released, that will probably be the last version of Camera Raw that will work with CS3. Photoshop CS4 has been announced, and will probably begin shipping within the next few weeks. The Camera Raw plug-in for the new version of Photoshop will not be compatible with Photoshop CS3.

  • Impossible to edit EXIF "Comments" field after Camera RAW 4 on a CR2 file

    Hi all,
I loaded a .CR2 file (Canon EOS 350D) into Camera Raw 4, ajusted it, saved it with photoshop (not save for web). All EXIF datas are present but now, impossible to edit it (Author, Comments, Keywords). Windows try to save it, no error messages, but nothing is saved.
I tryed to change it with ExifFarm but it kill my .JPG file (after this the file size is 0kb) !
Have you got the same problem ?
    Cheers

  • Camera raw does not open CR2 file

When I try to open a cr2 file from bridge or explorer, where there is usually the image I get a blue surface. I can open this file directly in PS but not in Caera Raw. I work with CC and everything is updated. A few days ago I installed Lightroom CC and since then this problem occured.

I have the same problem. But only when I start PS outside of company, where I work. When I open RAW file, connected to company network, everything works.
My application tab looks like one above, everything is up to date.
But I don't understand, one thing. When I am at work, connected to the company network and I switch off internet connection, PS works fine. Then should PS works fine every time, everywhere, not depending on the network I am connected to.

  • CS4 Camera Raw: Can't open multiple files ???

This is a very strange problem. I recently installed CS4 and started using it with RAW files from a Canon 5D Mark II camera. When selecting File -> Open As ->Camera Raw, I can't seem to select more than one raw file from the file dialog. I can open a single raw file no problem, but no matter what I try, either ctrl-A, holding down shift or ctrl does not allow me to open more than one file. With CS3 this worked fine.
Is there a setting in Preferences to control this (seems very odd even if there is)
PS: I see that there are two Camera Raw selections available in the file types list: what's the difference between them?
    Thanks

If they're raw files then just use File->Open, you only need to go the File->Open As route if you want to open JPEG files in Camera Raw without going through Bridge.
There's no point in listing Camera Raw file formats because every camera produces it's own version anyway, a .CR2 file produced by one camera isn't the same as one produced by another camera which is why the Camera Raw plug-in has to be constantly updated.

  • Do I need to upgrade both LR 5.7 and Camera Raw 8.7 to import files from Canon 7dMark2?  or is LR 5.7 enough or is camera raw 8.7 enough

Do I need to upgrade both LR 5.7 and Camera Raw 8.7 to import files from Canon 7dMark2?  or is LR 5.7 enough or is camera raw 8.7 enough

Lightroom is a complete stand alone program and does not require you to have any other Adobe product on your computer.
Adobe Camera Raw is a plugin for Photoshop CS and is not require by Lightroom nor is it used by Lightroom.
However if you are using both Lightroom 5 and Photoshop CS6 /Photoshop CC and wish them to 100% compatible then you will need to update the ACR Plugin in Photoshop.
Lightroom 5.7 will work fine with your Canon 7dMk2. (Its internal processing engine is the equivalent of ACR 8.7)
To wit LR 5.7 is an alternative to ACR 8.7 Plugin in Photoshop, you do not necessarily need both.

  • Camera Raw Will Not Open .CR2 Photo Files

I use Photoshop 7.0 with a Windows Vista operating system. Camera Raw in Elements will not recognize the Canon .CR2 Raw photo files that I download from my Canon 50D using a card reader. I even downloaded the new Camera Raw 5.1 from Adobe with the same results. Any ideas?

    Indeed, I stand corrected:
    Windows:
Photoshop Elements 6.0 and 7.0: Camera Raw 5.x
Photoshop Elements 5.0: Camera Raw 4.6
Photoshop Elements 4.0: Camera Raw 3.7
Photoshop Elements 3.0: Camera Raw 3.6
    Macintosh:
Photoshop Elements 6.0: Camera Raw 5.x
Photoshop Elements 4.0.1: Camera Raw 4.6
Photoshop Elements 3.0: Camera Raw 3.6
(The following page can be confusing, with versions of ACR intermingling with versions of PSE, and different versions than the headings being listed.)

  • Fix for Camera Raw 5.7 ignoring .xmp files?

I have a problem, some people seem to have: From a certain date on, every sidecared .xmp gets completely ignored. Camera Raw as well as Bridge seem to ignore them. They get created, whether I open them with Bridge or CR. Someone suggested I could fix this problem by associating the CR2 Format with Bridge or Photoshop (CS4), it worked for a while... if I opened it with the Windows Explorer. Opening a CR2 with Bridge netted in the same result: .xmp gets created, but gets ignored by Bridge and Camera Raw. Now even that fix doesn't seem to work: Neither CR nor Bridge want to acknowledge the files.
Is there a fix for that I'm unaware of?
    €:
It seems I have found the problem: Someone mentioned it might have something to do with the timestamp of the files not being correct. I checked the date and time of my camera and realised I haven't changed the time, as Daylight-saving changed. Now the .xmp files read correctly. Perhaps that is some use for other people.
    €, Update2:
I checked several things: If the modified time of the file lies in the future (here 1hr.), Bridge and Camera Raw have a problem recognizing the .xmp cause it seemed to have been created before the Photo was shot/modified last time. I took the pictures at 01:05pm (the were timed at 02:05pm). CR and Bridge ignored all .xmp-files created before 2:05pm. After 02:05pm, everything worked fine again.

Good to hear that the matter is acknowledged.
I had such cases. I think it was the renaming of old files. Not sure.
Many things can go wrong. Whatever triggers it. It woulld be great to have the option (checkbox) to enforce the (re-)synchronisation of an existing xmp file with a given Raw and/or dng file.
    Best regards, Peter

  • Camera Raw plug-in not recognizing file format.

My partner and I recently purchased new cameras, Canon D6 & Mark III. When I uploaded the new pictures from these cameras, the files didn't load. When I tried to open them in raw I received the error message seen below. Went to the link and was unable to find the appropriate update. Please assist when possible. I currently use CS5.1 & Windows.

    According to this list:
    http://helpx.adobe.com/creative-suite/kb/camera-raw-plug-supported-cameras.html
The 6D needs ACR 7.3 or newer while the 5D Mark III needs ACR 6.7 or 7.1 or newer.
PS-CS5 can only be updated to ACR 6.x so it might work with the 5D Mark II but not the 6D.
You can use the free DNG Converter 7.3 or newer to create DNGs from the CR2 files that can be read by the older ACR plug-in, or you can upgrade to PS-CS6 or PS-CC.  The best deal might be the PS-CC+LR Photography Plan that is $10/month.

  • How do you use Camera Raw Editor to open jpeg files by default, not using "Open As"?

I've searched for the Camera Raw setting that is available from the Photoshop (not PSE8) menu but it is not even available in Photoshop Elements 8 that I've been able to see.  Does anyone know where this setting is?

I had PSE8 set to open any file (tiff, jpeg and cr2) with the camera raw editor.  I can not figure out how it got changed or remember where to make this a default option in PSE8.  I found a video showing it available in Photoshop, main menu, camera raw and then you just check the boxes.  I've been looking for the similar setting in PSE8 again because I'm working through some exercises in a book and it is a nuisance to navigate to the image using the "open as" command every time.  I figured it would be just as easy to set the option by default, then, if I didn't want to use the raw editor, I could just click open from there.  Help?  Thanks so much!

  • Camera Raw 2 and opening these files in Preview.

Is it possible to update Preview so that I can open CR2 format images?
Also I have installed Canons Digital Photo Professional which does open CR2 files but they remain 'blocky' and unusable?
    Many thanks in advance.

I think I will stay with Tiger on my PB G4 1.25Ghz, I hope to upgrade my computer in the near future and anyway Leopard might be just that one step too far in upgrades for my machine.
As to the problems with opening Camera Raw files with Canon's DPP this was solved by the use of a PC, horror of horrors I know. But as soon as I showed the file to DPP running on a PC I got a windows message saying that the file was probably corrupted. So shooting a couple of new shots on my camera and offering those up and they opened quite happily on the PC. Then I tried the same files on my Mac and they also opened with no problems. Why the Mac did not show the same error I don't know. Anyway I can happily process Camera Raw on my Mac using DPP courtesy of Canon under Tiger. My Photoshop Elements 4 with the latest RAW plug-in sadly refuses to recognise CR2 files, I expect you have to buy the latest version of PSE to get that functionality.
    So back to taking photo's.
