Camera Raw & the Recovery Slider

Hi Folks ....
1st time on the forum.   I have recently upgraded to PSCC and I note when I go into Camera Raw that the "Recovery Slider " has disappeared.  This however only happens on certain images that` have taken since the upgrade; on images that were shot before the upgrade i still get the Recovery Slider.  I am using Camera Raw  8.7.1.
Anyone has similar problems and any ideas how to resolve it.
Thanks
George

PSE 11 has a new 2012 raw engine but you can switch between the old and the new. In the camera raw dialog click on the camera icon. Then change Process to 2010. Then go back to the basic tab.

  • Why can't I see the recovery slider in camera raw of elements?

I have the most recent version of elements, version 11. The camera raw plug-in is up to date, some 7.4 something. On the online help list and tutorials I have seen, there is a recovery slider. Yet, when I tried to practice with raw files in camera raw, the recovery slider was not there. I tried looking around the window, clicking menus, but can't find it. So where is it?

  • Camera Raw 7 - Recovery parameter

    Hi,
when I've opened the Camera Raw 7 and start working with that, I've notice that the parameter "Recovery" was missing.
    See image from CS5 down:
    Where can I found it?
    Best regards

There no longer is a recovery slider in ACR7/PV2012 (still there if you switch to the older PV2010 and PV2003 in the camera calibration tab though). If you look, many of the sliders have changed.
The closest thing to recovery now is the highlights slider, which will essentially do the same thing (i.e. recovery highlight detail) but in a more controlled and focused manner. Basically, you need to spend some time learning how the new tools available to you work: takes a bit of practice (in fact personally, I'm still learning how to get the best from it as I'm sure many are), but once you start to figure things out I think you'll find that the new processing cabailities in ACR7 are far superior to earlier versions. There are plently of tutorials out there that can help: many will be focused on the develop module in Lightroom in LR4 (as this was released two-three months in advance of ACR7), but the sliders operate in the exact same way so they'll be an invauable learning tool. Also try the Adobe forum for LR - plenty of good advice on there. But above all, just take some time to practice and figure thnigs out.

  • Is editing in Photoshop with Adobe camera RAW the same as editing in Lightroom?

    Hi,
I have been learning to use LIghtroom, and I am now reasonably comfortable with it.  I shoot in RAW, and do my import, organizing and editing in Lightroom.  My next goal is to start learning to use Photoshop (which looks like a much bigger leap than just Lightroom !).
My question is this:  from all my online reading and watching videos, it seems that some people edit mainly in Lightroom and work on photos in Photoshop when needed, whereas some people like to work mainly in Photoshop.  If the original RAW photo is imported into Photoshop, I believe it first opens in Camera RAW, and the editing tools there seem almost identical to Lightroom.  Is that the case?  In other words, is editing in Camera RAW (within Photoshop) essentially the same as editing the RAW photo in Lightroom?  Any advantages to doing it in Camera RAW?
    thanks,
    Neil

Quote from Photoshop Help | Camera Raw
Adobe Photoshop Lightroom® software is built upon the same powerful raw processing technology that is available in the Camera Raw plug-in.

  • Elements 11 accepts no *.arw files even after new installation and camera raw modul 7.4. Under open files as Camera Raw the *.arw file is listed.

After trying all options provided by Adope I cannot open *.arw files under Elements 11.

You need camera raw 8.3 for your camera. It is only compatible with PSE12 or PSE13. Alternatively, download and install the free Adobe DNG converter to convert your raw files to the Adobe universal Raw format and the files will open in all versions of PSE (keep your originals as backups and for use in the camera manufactures software)
Windows download (.exe file) click here DNG Converter 8.3
Mac download (.dmg file) click here DNG Converter 8.3
You can convert a whole folder of raw images in one click. See this quick video tutorial:

  • Camera raw 5.6 slider issue

    Hello,
I am having a problem with the sliders in ACR.  When I drag any slider to make a correction, when I let go if the mouse it pops back to where I started from and acts like it is locked or something.  If I try a couple more times, it finally works.
I have never seen this before, and I have been editing thousands of images for years. Any thoughts?

This may not solve your issue, but why on Earth are you running ACR 5.6?  Nobody should be running that obsolete version.  Update to 5.7 ASAP.

  • Recovery Slider: Color Changes with Camera Profiles, not so much with ACR 4.4 Profile?

I'm sure there's a reason for this, and not necessarily a defect, but I have to ask:
The recovery slider: if I use the Recovery Slider on an image set to the ACR 4.4 camera calibration profile, this helps control my highlights without affecting the overall color/tint of the image. However, if an image is set to the Adobe Standard camera calibration profile (or any of the other camera profiles) and I use the Recovery Slider on that image, the affect on the image seems to be different: the highlights are also controlled, but not without a perceived effect on the color tint of the image. The color balance almost seems to slightly change. Particularly noticeable on skin tones. I'm working with 5D files, using Lightroom 2.3 on a Mac.
What's the reason for this? Anyone experience similar?
    Thanks

This is a known "problem". It is caused by "hue twists" that are present in the camera-matching profiles and the new Adobe profiles. Several threads on this in the ACR forum:

  • How can I use the color adjustments interface that shows up for camera RAW on jpeg files?

How can I use the color adjustments interface that shows up for camera raw on other files types? The HLS controls had the secondary color adjustments (6 colors instead of the 3). Plus, it had same vibrancy and a better Curves interface. Yesterday was the first time I imported raw into Photoshop CS5 and I got that really cool interface. What is that? Can I use that on other file formats?

Actually I am using the Tradional Chinese Version, when I try to edit the jpg file with camera raw, the system shows that there is no camera raw plug-in. The cmaera raw never work.

  • After Downloading and Installing any version of Camera Raw after 8.3 the installation completes but 8.3 remains, how can I resolve this?

I am using Windows 7 Home Premium, with Adobe Design and Web Premium CS6.. I previously had this same problem installing Camera Raw 8.3  and as a work around back then, Adobe Support manually edited the Registry of my Windows 7 laptop to enable Photoshop CS6 and Bridge CS6 to recognise the Adobe Camera Raw 8.3 software so I could edit my files from my then new Nikon D610 camera...  Now when I receive and install any updates for Camera Raw the installation says it was successful but the old 8.3 version of Adobe Camera Raw remains when launched via Bridge or Photoshop..  which means I am unable to edit any files with the New Nikon D750 , or even the D810, can someone please help me solve this issue once and for good.. Thanks, please?!

Download the latest version: Parallels Desktop 8.0.18483. Uninstall the one you have then install the new version. The uninstaller will either be in your Applications folder or on the disk image for the version you now have installed.

    Thanks for your update Tom.
I will install both but wanted to ask about a recovery slider issue I was seeing with Canon RAW files & homemade DNG profiles in Lightroom.
The recovery slider was shifting colors towards magenta as more was applied..
Has this been addressed with the ACR 5.5 release?
If so, do I need to re-make all of me homemade DNG profiles after installing ACR 5.5?

  • CS4 recovery slider vs shadow/highlight

Is it my imagination or does the adjust highlight slider in Photoshop CS2 (image/adjust/shadow-highlight/adjust highlights) do the same thing, give the same results as the recovery slider in CS4 Camera Raw 5.0? If not, does anyone know what the difference is?  I'm trying my best to retain the blown out whites.
    Thanks,
    Airpix

The big difference between them is that you can use Recovery on raw files to bring back detail out of pure white because you still have information there (not always but you usually do) while a pure white in Photoshop doesn't have any information in it whatsoever.
The other difference (and i'm not 100% sure about this one) is that the Recovery slider works only on the luminance values (it darkens the highlights) while the Shadows/Highlights is an edge detection filter which is why you get halos when you have a huge amount and a low radius
The best solution would be to make as many tonal adjustments as you want/need in Camera Raw and then open it in Photoshop as a Smart Object (shift+click on Open Image to turn it into Open Object) and apply the Shadows/Highlights filter if you need it.

  • Recovery Slider in CS6

How do I get the recovery slider to show up in ACR?  When I open an image there is no recovery slider under my exposure slider.  When I open images previously edited in Photoshop Elements the slider appears in CS6 ACR.  I want it there all the time as defoult.  Please help.
    Thanks!

Hi! You should post in the camera RAW forum. There is no more recovery slider if you use process 2012. Go to the profiles tab and select the old and inferior 2010 process to get it, or better, learn how 2012 can get you faster to good images in this tutorial: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J8D7FbcJrkI

  • Why does Camera Raw goes back to CS5 settings?

I just installed CS6. When I open my photos from Bridge in Camera Raw, the old window from CS5 opens (the one with Fill Light and Recovery), not the new one with Highlights/Shadows. I can get it to change to the new version by clicking on a fly out menu that says Reset Camera Raw Defaults but I have to do that for each photo. How can I get the new version to open all the time?

It sounds like Camera Raw is simply using the settings you saved when you last opened the image.
You may have also saved Camera Raw Defaults from the older version.
Set new defaults using your CS6 PV2012 capabilities, then if you open an older image and wish to use the new process version, either change just the process version value or choose Default Settings and re-develop your controls until you like what you see.

  • What am I losing when I see individual color clipping in Camera Raw?

I hope this is the right place to leave this question as it's probably more about color than a technical question about PS. I have enough knowledge of color theory to be dangerous, as they say.
I am adjusting some landscape images taken in RAW mode with a Nikon D200.
In Camera Raw, as I draw the black slider to the right, I see clipping of blue channel before the image looks adjusted properly for contrast. With the option key down, large blocks of yellow appear before black appears, and I assume that also means the blues are being clipped. The only place I see that clipping is areas of green foliage.
Deep blue skies are not showing clipping and neither are other obvious blues in the images.
When I adjust Camera Raw's black slider to the point where I get full shadow clipping (black shows up with the Option key down), back off slightly, and then look at the image's channels in PS, I see the blue channel is all blocked up.
I understand (or think I understand) that the weak channel carries detail...yet I really can't see any difference in foliage detail whether the blue channel is clipped or not.
I am not clear about what I am doing, and I am also not clear whether this is a result of the rendering of certain greens by my camera. I know from experience that manipulations of yellows in later processing seems to affect foliage colors more than manipulation of greens. Saturation of foliage is affected far more by selecting "yellows" in the saturation adj layer dropdown box than by selecting greens.

    Thanks, everyone.
Opening the image in ProPhoto colorspace completely eliminates the blue clipping. When I compare two instances of an image in PS after assigning ProPhoto in ACR for one and Adobe RGB in ACR for the other, I see much more detail in the blue channel of the image in PS.
Yes, then this is a good lesson on gamut clipping and colorspace.
I tried the workaround but it's much easier to just work in a larger colorspace.

  • Recovery Slider and Unblown Colour Shifts

    Hello,
I've attached a pair of screen captures of part of an image and part of the lightroom 2.4 develop screen visible.
    In the Before image you can see 0 Recovery and R 42.4 G 42.1 B 88.5.
In the after with only the recovery slider moved to 51 you get R 52.5 G 50.3 B 80.5
Why on earth is this unblown portion of the image being colour shifted so much ?
Why is the blue even suffering from the recovery slider when it has quite a way to go before clipping any channel.
The bit that escapes me entirely is the increase in red and green by around 10%, just doesn't make sense.
If it was deemed by the software that blue should be decreased, why shouldn't R & G be treated in the same manner instead of the inverse ?
The red of the cape suffers a similar mess up of blue and green channels.
The whole image appears to suffer Hue shifts including parts that have no channel anywhere near clipping, why ?
    Cheers
    John

    John,
I don't agree that recovery of 51 is way high, it is only just over half the available scale. Although anything over 20 mangled hues before applying DCPtool.
In quite a few images I now have recovery of 100 set, but brightness and or exposure have been adjusted as well to give an overall result I like better than previously. This is possible because the hue is no longer being mangled.
Adjustment brush is an interesting possibility, but I think I'd just use a differnt raw converter that wasn't so difficult. I think the brush would be to blunt to divide the image into adjust / non adjust areas.
    Cheers
    John
