Camera raw version and Canon 70D

My camera raw version doesn't support my new Canon 70D

Needs ACR 8.2.  So CS6, CC, or DNG converter.

  • Camera Raw Versions and PSE Versions

On my Windows 7 PC, I have installed (and have a license for) among other both PSE V10 and PSE V12.  On my PC, when editing a Nikon NEF File, PSE V10 uses Camera Raw 6.4.1 and PSE V12 uses Camera Raw 8.2.
Since on my C Disk I see only one copy of a Folder named "NIKON D5000" (this folder is in C:\ProgramData\Adobe\CameraRaw\Camera Profiles\Camera ), I have the impression that both the versions 6.4.1 and the Version 8.2 of Camera RAW share the identical Camera Profiles.   Is that impression/guess correct?
Question 1: Can I conclude, that (since both Camera Raw Version share the same Camera Profile folders), if I will buy a Nikon D5300 (which officially gets supported only by Camera Raw 8.n (n being probably equal or higher than 3)), that once  Camera Raw 8.n (n=> 3) will be installed on my PC (because this will be the Camera Raw Version supported/used by PSE V12), I will  be able to process my future D5300 Nef Files both with the combination of PSE V10 and Camera Raw 6.4.1 and the combination of PSE V12 and Camera Raw 8.n (even though officially, Camera RAW 6.4.1 does not support the D5300)? Thank You very much in advance for your answer.
Question 2: Can somebody point me to a downloadable  NEF file shot by the Nikon D7100?
I will then download that NEF file and see whether I can process it with the combination of PSE V10 and Camera Raw 6.4.1. This will allow me to verify the answer to question 1. Thank You very much in advance for your answer

Since I am probably not the only one on these forums who do not understand well (or who is/was not even aware of) the Adobe DNG converter,  I would like to add the following:
Yes, 99jon is totally correct: a NEF File from the Nikon D7100 will not open with PSE V10 and with ACR6.4.
...But: a couple of days ago, I realized that I could use the latest versions of the free downloadable Adobe DNG Converter (which supports among other Nikon D7100 NEF and the RAW Files of most modern cameras) to convert the D7100 .NEF files into DNG Files. To perform such a conversion, I started the DNG Converter, identified the windows folder containg the NIKON D7100 NEF Files, provided a couple of options and then let the DNG Converter convert the NIKON D7100  NEF Files into .dng files.
Once done, I imported the .dng files into PSE V10,...and could edit them without problems with the combination of PSE V10 and ACR 6.4. Even if I am not a specialist and might be wrong: I did not came across any limitation for the ACR editing of the NIKON D7100 .dng files that was problematic for my purposes (ACR even supported multiple "Camera Profiles" for the D7100!). I am more than happy!
To summarize: if making a small détour via the DNG Converter,  it becomes possible to edit with the combination of old PSE Versions and old ACR Versions the "DNG versions" of RAW Files shot with new cameras (like for example the NIKON D7100)..

  • Camera Raw Version and Nikon D800E

    Hi everyone,
So with my new Nikon camera (D800E), I now realize that I can do nothing in CS4 with my RAW files. As my current version of Camera Raw is only 5.7 for it. Will I have to upgrade my version to at least CS5 with ACR 6.7 minimum? Maybe go with CS6?
    Regards,
    Jason Gaughan

The reason you can’t read the D800E raws in an old ACR plug-in is because that old ACR plug-in doesn’t know the camera parameters that are embedded in the raw converter.  What the DNG Converter does is takes the original raw data and adds the Adobe-camera parameters and packages everything in a DNG file per the DNG standard.  That DNG contains the raw data plus enough information for older ACR plug-ins to convert the data, as long as you set the compatibility options in the DNG Converter to create the DNG for that age of plug-in.
If you don’t delete your original files, then yes, the DNG Converter will create files that are also relatively similar in size to the NEFs, although they could be smaller or larger depending on what size of preview you embed an if the NEF compression is better than the DNG compression.
Lightroom is good.  Check out the LR 5.2 update and run in 30-day trial mode to make sure it is compatible with your computer.  http://www.adobe.com/downloads/updates/
You can always do Edit in Elements with LR Adjustments from within LR to get the file over into PSE for the final edits.

  • Import camera raw files from Canon 70D to PSE 10

I downloaded the new DNG converter, and I am still unable to open the camer raw files.  Please help!

You need to use the DNG Converter 8.4 to create DNG files from the CR2 files, then PSE will open those DNG files.

  • WHEN will you support raw files for Canon 70D in PE? This camera has been out for months!

WHEN will you support raw files for Canon 70D in PE? This camera has been out for months!

    Hi,
PSE 12 with updates or PSE 13 should support the Canon 70D.
Which version do you have and which operating system are you running on?
If you have an older version of PSE, you could use the DNG converter to convert the CR2 files to DNG files - then you can use the DNG files in PSE.

  • Why does Adobe refuse to provide the latest version of Camera Raw (like my Canon 6d) for CS5?

Why does Adobe refuse to provide the latest version of Camera Raw (like my Canon 6d) that could be supported in Photoshop CS5 or earlier?  Its like Adobe saying you want a Camera Raw for you Camera then buy CS6 which is insulting to your customers.

Adobe's policy to to provide free updates (not upgrades) for currently shipping software, which means the current Photoshop CS6 and Camera Raw 7.x. Development on Photoshop CS5.x and Camera Raw 6.x stopped when Photoshop CS6 started shipping. While it may appear on the surface that's it's a ploy to force users to upgrade to the most recent version when getting a new camera, it's really a policy based on the technical issues of trying to provide backwards compatible software for application that are no longer being developed.
Camera Raw is a plug-in for Photoshop and as such, it is dependent on the Photoshop SDK in which it loads...it's also dependent upon the system level APIs being used by the applications. Could Adobe keep upgrading old software? Yes, but it would be a technical nightmare.
Your alternative is simply use the free DNG Converter if you want to use new cameras that weren't in existence when your old software was developed. Pretty simple really and it's not designed as insult to Adobe customers...it's actually an affirmative program to make sure current users are provided support.
The problem of new camera support for old software is really a problem caused primarily by the camera companies spawning off new cameras whose file formats are undocumented and proprietary. If the camera makers adopted a standard file format that could be opened in standard applications (kinda like DNG) then tis problem would be mitigated. You really should place the lion's share of the problem at the feet of the camera companies...

  • Microsoft OneDrive and Canon 70D RAW Files display issue

    Hello Guys,
I have a Canon 450D and I was really surprised that my RAW files (*.CR2) were displayed on Microsoft OneDrive without making a JPG files.
    That's really cool !
Few weeks ago I receive my new Canon 70D.
I have upload my RAW files (*.CR2 also) on OneDrive and the file is not displayed.
To make it easy, you will find both files here :
    http://1drv.ms/1qvndZW
I all ready ask support on their forum : Here
But they ask me to ask you...
By any chance, has Canon changed their .CR2 files format that would explain Microsoft has to update their "Convertor" ?
Thanks in advance for your time !

    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Camera RAW is more of a "concept" than a specific standard.   The idea behind a RAW file is that the data unloaded from the chip will not be altered in any way which results in a loss of original data.
JPEG images use a "lossy" compression algorithm which will normalize data when differences are so subtle that your eye probably would not have noticed the difference.  But when images are adjusted, subtle differences may be "stretched" and the loss of the original data can be detrimental to ability to adjust the image later and still get good results.
BUT... since every camera can have a difference sensor, different resolutions, etc. the method needed to decode a RAW file and display the image can be different literally on a model-by-model basis.  When you work with RAW files, you always need the codec specific to that very camera model.... not just "any" .CR2 codec will work.  This is the same with all other brands of cameras as well.
Microsoft does not include camera RAW updates in the default OS updates that you may be applying to your computer on a regular basis (Apple does... every couple of months I get a camera RAW update and if I read the notes, it'll have a list of new camera models on the market for which they've added RAW support.)    But Microsoft DOES make the RAW updates available... they're just not automatic.  You have to go download and install them.
See this link at the Microsoft support website:  http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2899189
If you look down the page on that specific link, you'll notice a whole list of cameras for which they've added RAW support and the Canon 70D is among them.

You were probably using the Release Candidate version of camera raw 8.7, which one gets from Adobe Labs.

  • My student has been using Lightroom 4 with Photoshop CS5 on her Mac for well over a year. Because of the difference between the Camera raw version available to her in Photoshop CS5 and the raw process in Lightroom 4, she has been exporting her raw images

    Any ideas?

My student has been using Lightroom 4 with Photoshop CS5 on her Mac for well over a year. Because of the difference between the Camera raw version available to her in Photoshop CS5 and the raw process in Lightroom 4, she has been exporting her raw images from Lightroom and choosing the "Render using Lightroom option when it popped up in the dialogue box. She has been doing this for over a year and a half without any problem. Today when she hit Command E no dialogue box appeared and the image just opened in Photoshop. I'm concerned that all of her Lightroom edits are not being rendered to Photoshop. Anyone have an idea as to how we can get the "Render using Lightroom" dialogue back?

  • Photoshop Elements 6.0 and Camera Raw Version Question

I have been using Photoshop Elements 6.0 and it's does what I need to do.
Revcently we bought two new cameras and the Camera Raw version 5.6 that we have installed does not support these new cameras.
The Camera Raw list says that I need Camera Raw 6.2 for the one and 6.3 for the other (so 6.3).  But as far as I can understand, PE 6.0 will only support up to Camera Raw 5.6.
And to support 6.3, I'd need a minimum of PE 8.0.
    Am I correct?
    Thanks

Download and install the free Adobe DNG converter to convert your raw files to the Adobe universal Raw format and the files will open in all versions of PSE (keep your original raw files as backups and for use in the manufacturers software)

  • CS5 and Lightroom 4-different camera raw versions

Lightroom 4 has a camer raw version 7 and my CS5 has 6.7? Trying to figure out the easiest way to get them both to be 6.6 which appears to be the latest versions and I have no idea how I got the versions I have. When converting from lightroom to CS5 the photo don't look the same and I assume this is the reason why. So, what do I need to delete to get these versions the same?

The ACR 6.7 is a beta which should be superceeded by the final relase soon. In terms of LR4 yes it's based on ACR 7 from the upcoming Photoshop CS6 (whose beta is out) but there is no way to back LR4's version down...
When opening from LR4 into Photoshop CS5 you should select the option to Render in Lightroom. That will have LR4 correctly render the image into Photoshop.
