Camera Raw, What Is It? Where Is It? Demystify Please
I'm told by Lightroom that I have an older version of Camera Raw but it no longer gives me that message on startup because I probably checked the box that said don't remind me again.
In the interest of learning more about Camera Raw I need to know:
Is it an application? - I don't see it in the applications folder (Mac)
Is it a plug-in module? - I don't see it in the Photoshop plug-ins folder.
Where does it reside? - I did a Spotlight search of my entire system and the only things that came up for Camera Raw are some folders in Library>Application support and a bunch of pdf files.
I need to tell which version I have but can't do that until I find it - whatever it is.
My next question has to do with lightroom: Does Lightroom use Camera Raw (I'm gathering it does if it recognizes I have an older version). Is Camera Raw the machine that operates behind the curtain of 'Develop?'
If I knew the answer to just these few basic things, I think I could understand a lot more about how Lightroom operates in Develop mode.
TIA,
Ken
Thanks for the info ssprengel,
So, it it is a plug-in that Photoshop uses; (I have CS3 with Photoshop Extended) why is it not in the plug-ins folder for Photoshop?
Why does it not update automatically like every other Adobe product I have does on a regular basis? My CS3 Photoshop has updated but why would the Camera Raw plug-in be ignored?
Also, If Lightroom uses the Camera Raw engine, doesn't that mean that it should not be concerned with what plug-in I have for Photoshop? That part just does not make sense to me.
"You should keep ACR up-to-date with LR to avoid making adjustments in LR that ACR cannot perform." --- Aha!, so that means that there are TWO Camera Raw engines working, one built into Lightroom and one floating around in the system somewhere? (I have not located yet.) And these TWO Camera Raw (one internal to Lightroom and one a plug-in for Photoshop?) need to be kept in sync with same version number?
I'm going to now go into Photoshop and see if I can update the Camera Raw plug-in from there as you recommend.
Thanks,
Ken
Okay, I am back from running update, all of my software is up to date. The problem is that I have CS3 and the newer versions of Camera Raw beyond 4.x are only compatible with CS4. Because of the ailing economy right now I will have to be lop-sided on Camera Raw it looks like.
Will I be okay if I just do not use Photoshop Camera Raw and only use Lightroom 2.4? or should I de-grade back to an older version of Lightroom? (I don't like that idea.)

In adobe camera raw, what metadata field needs to be filled in so that if an image is uploaded to facebook by a customer, your copyright/info shows up?
Facebook used to but now I believe it includes it. I also read that possible facebook adds metadata to images uploaded to albums but not wall posts. Regardless, what metadata field has to be filled in?

Even though I have checked "Automatically open all supported TIFF's" in Camera RAw Preferences - My tiff files do not open up in camera RAW. How can I correct the problem?
What kind of TIFFs? Are they multi-layered, for instance? ACR will not open layered files.

"Prefer Adobe Camera Raw" - What exactly does this do?
What is the significance of the "Prefer Adobe Camera Raw for JPEG and TIFF"?
I ran into the following issue:
I update some of the fields in the IPTC metadata. In particular the title and keywords. I'm running Vista 64, and both changes faithfully appear when I view the file with Vista's picture browser or even in Windows Explorer. So far so good.
I'm then also uploading the pictures to a Menalto Gallery website. Here is when I run into trouble.
- If I have Prefer ACR checked of when I update the IPTC then the gallery website does not pick up on the metadata.
- If I have Prefer ACR checked off when I update the IPTC then the gallery website is able to pick up on the metadata and assign captions on the website accordingly.
So I'm trying to figure out what the difference between prefer ACR on and off is, and why this would affect reading of the metadata by a third party application.
Thanks!
CarlosAfter much digging, I've been able to come up with a rough answer to my own question.
It appears that when the "prefer ACR" setting is on, Bridge saves older versions of the Metadata (in the XMP IDF, I believe). When displaying a file's metadata, Bridge knows to only display the latest version.
It would appear that Windows Vista's built-in photo tools are also smart enough to only display the latest version of the metadata. Other tools (such as the Gallery software), however, appear to get confuse and display an older version of the metadata.
In short, the conclusion I've arrived at is: If you want higher compatibility across applications, turn OFF "prefer ACR". If you value versioning information then keep ON "prefer ACR". -
Photoshop cs5 camera raw (what?) Not 5.7 or better thats for sure.
I was a bit dissapointed today when I downloaded cs5 photoshop trial, and tried to open a canon t2i raw file.
Aaarg..."Document could not be opened".
Is there an update to the shiny new CS5 Photoshop that would install the current camera raw?jwestveer wrote:
ACR has changed between 5.7 and 6.0 and that camera is no longer supported.
No, ACR hasn't "changed"...the fact is that because of QE, packaging and other Creative Suite requirements, Camera Raw 6 (the one that ships WITH CS5) is already out of date...ACR 6 was done months ago. ACR 5.7 was literally just released a week or so ago and has camera support ACR 6 doesn't have.
John Nack has already indicated there will be an update to ACR to version 6.1 which include all the cameras that 5.7 support (like the 550) and any new cameras that they were able to support.
The EXACT same situation occurred last time with CS4. Photoshop CS4 was released with ACR version 5.0 which didn't support all the cameras that ACR 4.6 supported even though they were released almost the same time. It wasn't long until ACR 5.1 came out.
In the mean time, DNG Converter 5.7 WILL convert the 550 CR2s to DNGs that ACR 6 can read...
And ALL of this camera support bullcrap would be moot if Nikon and Canon quite using proprietary raw file formats instead of a standard. -

Where is the Camera raw plug-in?
I just installed photoshop elements and I require the Camera raw plug-in; However, I have been looking for the dowload for two days now. Can someone point me to a link where I can download Camera raw for Elements 11?
Thanks in advance.A Camera Raw plugin should install when you installed photoshop elements 11.
(i believe version 7.1)
Look under Help>About Plug-In>Camera Raw (windows) or Adobe Photoshop elements Editor>About Plug-In>Camera Raw (mac)
in the pse 11 editor to see the present version of camera raw installed.
(click on the words Camera Raw)
What operating system are you using?
Are you having trouble opening camera raw files from a certain camera in pse 11?
(what camera is it?)
Have you gone to Help>Updates from within the photoshop elements 11 editor to see if camera raw 7.4 is available and installed it? -
My auto updates are not working! I cannot find where to download Camera Raw 8.1 for Photoshop CS6 (Windows 8 64 bit). My Camera Raw is now at 7.1. I had the online Adobe folks tell me to just download all updates manually. That's great, yet I cannot find camera raw 8.1 to download...
Please help.
Thanks, Janetthere's a direct download link on this page: https://blogs.adobe.com/lightroomjournal/2013/06/camera-raw-8-1-and-dng-converter-8-1-now- available.html

How do I install Camera Raw 4.6 ?
I have PS CS3 and a Nikon D90, To open the RAW (NEF) files I obviously need to install a compatible version of camera raw which is 4.6 (CS3 is camera raw 4) I have downloaded camera raw 4.6 from adobe website but it makes no difference, I still cant open the RAW files.
Also I have tried installing manually that doesn't work either. When I go to Common Programs Adobe isn't there, it is in another folder called program files (x86) when I do finally find file formats there is no camera raw there.
If anyone knows what's going on please let me know, ThanksIf you do Help / About Plug-ins / Camera Raw what version does it report?
From your description, I’d guess your OS is newer than the instructions and the folders where the plug-in is, is different, now.
You may be able to find it by searching your entire hard-drive for the file “Camera Raw.8bi” and replace that with what you’ve unzipped from the Adobe download. I don’t remember if the plug-in is in a hidden folder but if you can’t find it, initially, maybe turn on hidden folder viewing in Explorer Tool / Folder Options / Advanced.
If Help / About Plug-ins doesn’t show Camera Raw as being installed then install Photoshop, again, to put it back. -
Unable to update to Camera Raw 6.7.1 in CS5

Can't find the Camera Raw Dialog Box
So, I go to one of those great photoshop seminars by Scott Kelby. I've been using elements for a few years. Decided it was most definitely time to upgrade to PS CS4.
I got it today. I'm pumped. I'm also a bit confused. I am trying to find the camera raw dialog box spoken of in literature and help files. I have a cannon XTi and recently shot some stuff in raw, confirmed the extension of .cr2. I've opened it using bridge and tried various other ways to get the camera raw plug in to activate.
Best I can tell, it is either fully invisible, I'm a noob, or it isn't displaying something or otherwise working. I read in the help files about "click on the basic tab in the camera raw dialog box," and so many other things I'm supposed to be doing in the camera raw dialog box.
Where in the world is this box? How do I know it is the camera raw dialog box? Is it labeled that? I've spent all evening going through help files, reading materials, and have already learned a lot about PS CS4. But now I'm lost. The world is dark and grey and my life has no meaning. Well, that is what my 15 year old is telling me right now because I took her cell phone away. Enough drama, sry life with teenagers, Lord help me!
Seriously, where do find the camera raw dialog box? How do I know a raw file, the canon cr2 format has successfully opened in raw? I only see .psd extensions and nothing looks different to me on the screen from opening a .jpg to opening a .cr2.
Advise is appreciated.
RobertFirst of all make sure everything is updated: Photoshop to 11.0.1 and Camera raw to 5.6.
See: http://www.adobe.com/downloads/updates/
Then, if you double-click on a .CR2 file you should get the choice to open. Choose PS CS4.
The file will then open inside PS with the Camera Raw dialog.
Normally, if you are previewing in Bridge (which is the usual way) Cmd+R or a right-click on a CR2 file will open the ACR dialog. -
PSE 9 Organizer and Camera Raw
I've just updated to PSE 9 from PSE8. What I liked with PSE 8 was selecting a Canon CR2 raw file in Browser CS4, the camera raw window would open where a number of key items could be modified before selecting Open and full editing in PSE 8.
Is there a way to select a raw file in PSE9 Organiser and have the Camera raw window open?
I went under Help/Updates and Camera Raw 6.3 was 'installed', but is there is no option (that I can see) to use Camera Raw prior to PSE9.
Can anyone assist?
With thanks - dfielder7Many thanks for the assistance.
I'm starting to believe CS4 browser is much better than Organiser - at least for the Mac. There are several key components that appear to be lacking in Organiser, but many that's because it was designed for a different purpose.

Adobe Bridge Photo Downloader with Camera Raw 9 on MAC OS 10.9.5
I just updated to Adobe Camera Raw 9.0 on 4/28/2015. MAC OS 10.9.5 with PSCS 6 extended.
When I insert my CF memory card to download images, only icons appear. Images were there last week when CR 8.8 was installed.
Also note, Convert to DNG is greyed out. No option to convert to DNG on the download.
I tried to locate the Camera Raw.plugin file, but can not find it. It is no longer in the Application folder/Adobe Photoshop CS6/File Format folder.
Also tried to locate Camera Raw.plugin 8.8 on Adobe's site, it takes you to Camera Raw 9.0.
I just need the Camera Raw.plugin file and where to place the file. Need to remove Camera Raw 9.0.

Can't open a JPEG in Adobe Camera RAW 4.3.1
I'm trying to open a jpg file from bridge to ACR using the cmnd+r combination and nothing happens.
I can only view jpg files in ACR when I apply changes to them in Lightroom. Then I just double click on them (or cmnd+o) and they open in Adobe Camera RAW.
Anyone can help?
I'm using OS X 10.5.2In Bridge > Preferences > Thumbnails I've enabled the checkbox that says:
"Prefer Adobe Camera Raw for JPEG and TIFF files"
In Photoshop > Preferences > File Handling > File Compatibility I've enabled the checkbox that says:
"Prefer Adobe Camera Raw for JPEG Files"
In ACR > Camera Raw Preferences > JPEG and TIFF Handling I have enabled the checkboxes that says:
"Always open JPEG files with settings using Camera Raw"
"Always open TIFF files with settings using Camera Raw"
What I'm I doing wrong? -
I have PSE 8 with camera raw 5.5. Where can I get camera raw 5.6 to upgrade to enable me to use it with the raw pictures from my canon 7D?
Are you using a windows or mac system?
Actually you can update to camera raw 6.2, which is the newest version for pse 8:
