Camera Raw Workflow options

HI
when i open jpag (or tiff) in camera raw Workflow options,
i have option to size image.
may question it's: if i choose the large size, what hapen to
may image - interpolation like in Ps?
thank

I don't know which algorithm Camera Raw uses ... but the result of the upsampling is virtually the same as Bicubic Smoother in Photoshop. Except for one thing: Camera Raw's upsampling will add tiny ringing artifacts to the result; Photoshop's won't. The artifacts are bright, horizontal or vertical, 1-pixel-wide lines along sharp, high-contrast edges. So for perfect results I recommend to convert the raw image to its native size in Camera Raw, then do the upsizing in Photoshop using the resampling method Bicubic Smoother. Before upsizing, apply some gentle source or capture sharpening.
However those ringing artifacts are really
i very
small; it takes a very close look at high magnification to notice. In most cases they'll go unnoticed. So you may decide not to care. However they tend to get emphasized by subsequent sharpening.

  • Difference between 'Camera Raw Defaults' option and Default button

I am using ACR 4.6 under CS3 in Windows.
If I open an image and click the Default button above the exposure sliders, all the tonal settings are reset to the defaults, but Clarity, Vibrance and Saturation are not altered.
If I select 'Camera Raw Defaults' from the menu the tonal settings are reset to the defaults as above, but Clarity, Vibrance and Saturation are also reset to 0.
I was under the impression that the Default button and the 'Camera Raw Defaults' option did the same thing, but apparently not. What is the difference?

The default button you are talking about only affects the sliders in the same group with the button.

  • Camera Raw Workflow Settings - where?

    Hi!
In Bruce Fraser's and Jeff Schewe's "Camera Raw with .. CS3", p 134, a dialogue box Workflow Options is shown. Likewise, Photoshop CS3 Help > Camera Raw > CR Settings > CR Workflow Options promises "You can see and change these Workflow settings at the bottom of the Camera Raw dialog box."
I wonder which dialog box the text is referring to. I can not see the Workflow dialog box at the bottom of the dialog box shown in Bridge > Camera Raw Preferences, nor in Bridge > Preferences, nor in Photoshop > Preferences, nor in Photoshop > Edit > Color Settings.
All the entrances on the Adobe site only lead me to the same PS Help document.
It would indeed be useful to be able to specify e.g the bit depth as a default, because the PS default seems to be 8 bit (PS > Image > Mode), so I have to remember to set it to 16 for every single image anew.
    I use Mac 10.4.11 on a MacBook Pro, 2GHz processor, 2GB RAM , PS CS3, ACR 4.5
    Thanks for help! Hening.

    >Well, the save button is alongside the hyperlink (to it's left) and that opens a fresh panel to allow various options to be set, so I find the explanation advanced by the ACR Team bit hard to understand.
You running a display at 1024 x 768? Because that's Camera Raw's real estate minimum that HAS to be supported...so what you can do in a dialog whose display ends up at a much higher resolution is severely limited because of the minimum requirements. That's why...

  • Camera raw Workflow?

1.) Can you edit raw format files in Photoshop CS5 or do you have to do this in Camera Raw?
2.) Which edits should be done in Camera Raw before bringing the file into PhotoShop?
White balance, tonal range, contrast, color saturation, sharpening? What else?
3.) Is the idea of this workflow to perform the steps listed in #2 and then to do any of the retouching, such as healing brush, clone, etc. in Photoshop and then to sharpen the image in PhotoShop at the end?
    Thanks.

Are you suggesting that Camera Ra is optimal place for adjustments for raw images or for images in general? Is it better to adjust jpgs in Camera Raw also?
What is the Capture Sharpening feature?
    Thanks!

  • Why is the resolution  stuck in the Camera Raw workflow dialogue box?

I cannot adjust the resolution in the workflow space in Camera Raw. It goes from 70 backwards to 1. The same situation exists in Image Size when I switch to Photoshop. Help!

Think I figured it out. I needed to open a copy of the image as the original had been saved at 72 . When I "saved as" I could change everything in Photoshop.

  • Adobe Camera Raw workflow question #2901

Now that I have my new digital camera-dedicated rig up and running I have been using ACR and CS2 to process my backlog of Canon 30D CR2 files. I am trying to get them ready for posting on the internet. Currently I am using ACR only to tweak Exposure and White Balance, then I move the file in 16 bits/AdobeRGB to CS2 where I do noise reduction, levels, curves adjustment, saturation then resize, sharpening then convert to an 8 bit, sRGB Jpg.
I have adopted this workflow because it was similar to the one I used when my old creakin' PC required me to use DPP to do my RAW conversion (and I subsequently did PP in CS with a 16 bit TIFF)
But I notice ACR has many choices and options such as contrast, shadows, saturation, sharpness, noise reduction controls that one can perform prior to RAW conversion. I have read in the past theoretical comments that adjustments are best made to a file during RAW conversion rather than while as a jpg. Does the same apply to a 16 BiT TIFF? In the workflow above, am I working on a TIFF?
I am wondering if I am better off to make all of the adjustments in ACR window instead of the more lengthy process in CS2. Are there any advantages to doing these adjustments prior to RAW conversion? Or is it better to do PP on 16 bit files using layers?
What are the relative merits of processing the file in either ACR window or as an 16 bit file in CS2?
If it matters, I work on a PC and prefer to PP each file separately rather than in batches. But I DO use batch runs in CS2 to save time using Actions with around 10 file batches to do noise reduction and resize/convert to sRGB/save as.
As always, thanks for the time you take to help me out!!

    >"What does Pixelgenius PhotoKit Sharpener do that I can't do, perhaps with more trouble, by applying what I've read in his book? And would I have a problem trying to use it with CS3? "
I have a few observations and perhaps Jeff can comment. With images taken with a digital camera at high ISO, noise reduction may be necessary in the capture phase of sharpening. PhotoKit offers the sharpen and smooth option for this purpose. One can exert some control over the smoothing process by changing the opacity of the smoothing layer and the blend if sliders.
In his sharpening book Bruce uses Photoshop's reduce noise and despeckle filters to reduce noise (sometimes using the despeckle filter multiple times), but I don't know what filter is used in the PhotoKit smoothing operation or what parameters are used for the reduce noise filter if it is used.
If you use Bruce's book and the "roll your own" approach, you have more control over the noise reduction process and also the possibility of using a third party NR product such as the Noise Ninja plugin. Furthermore, just as an edge mask is used to restrict the sharpening to the edges, a surface mask may be used with NR to keep the smoothing away from the edges. The surface mask may be derived by inverting the edge mask used for sharpening, but Bruce says that some tweaking may give improved results.
An alternative would be to use the third party NR prior to using PK sharpener. However, you would still need to make a surface mask for optimum results, but I doubt that many users take the trouble of doing this.
In my own work with the Nikon D200 (which has rather high noise at high ISO), I find that I often get unacceptable noise and artifacts with PK Sharpener when used with high ISO images.
Also, many landscape photographers mask off areas of clear blue sky and foliage that do not need sharpening, thereby avoiding accentuation of noise secondary to sharpening in these areas.
    >Bruce gave you the recipies...he didn't give you the exact numbers to use. So, you'll have to do what he and I did...trial and error, to arrive at optimum numbers...
For output sharpening, the PK defaults seem to work quite well and the trial and effort of rolling your own is usually not worthwhile, IMHO.

  • Camera Raw 4.1 - Open Image in 16 Bit mode

How does one do this? The Help Screen describes altering Camera Raw Workflow Options at the bottom of the Camera Raw Dialog box. I could do this in ACR 3, but my dialogue box in 4.1 has buttons at the bottom for "Save Image", "Open Image", "Cancel" and "Done". I can't see anything that will give me additional options. How do I find them? Any advice will be much appreciated. Terry

  • Camera Raw 8.3 Workflow option no longer has a preset drop down to create custom presets.

I do not know why I am no longer able to assign presets to my Camera Raw workflow.  The drop down in no longer available at the top.  Any suggestions on what I did to hide this, I would appreciate it.

I just reloaded Bridge CC and it seems to have corrected the problem.  Not sure why, but not complaining.  Thanks to all of you who tried to help.

  • Can only open some JPEG files in Camera Raw through Bridge CS3

I'm running Bridge CS3 version 2.0.0.975. I always edit my JPEG files through Camera Raw in Bridge CS3. I only have to Right-Click on the file and select "Open in Camera Raw...". However, I've come into a situation where some jpg files will not open this way; the option is not even there.
I have made sure to tick the box in preferences under Behavior "Double-Click Edits Camera Raw Settings in Bridge", and also tick the box under Thumbnails -> Performance and File Handling "Prefer Adobe Camera Raw for JPEG and TIFF Files.
These files were originally 16bit Grayscale TIFF files, but I changed them to RGB 8bit JPEG files.
Also, I know the program works because I navigate to an older photo I worked which is a JPEG and the "Open in Camera Raw..." option is there when I Right-Click, but then I navigate back to the image I want to edit, and the option is not there.
Here are links to my screenshots of what I'm talking about. Both images in the last two screenshots are JPEG:

That's a fundamental problem right there, and a clue in all this.  You should be able to see JPEGs in the Open As Camera Raw dialog.
What happens if you type in the name?
I'm almost convinced you have a file named .jpg but with a different image format inside.  Can you put one of these files online for others to try to open?

  • JPEG 2000  & Camera Raw?

I converted a nef  and a regualr jpeg to a Jpeg 2000 picture and used the various save options as a test.  In all cases I can not open it in camera raw, that option is grayed out.  Is this by design?
I notice in Bridge Camera Raw Preferences  there are only options for jpeg and tiff images to be opened in camera raw.  Is this an oversight?
Also, using Bridge one can not add keywords as the message appears "xxxxx.jpf can not store XMP metadata".
In Windows Explorer the add tags box does not appear as an option either, so it can't be blamed on Bridge.
Has any one else experienced these problems with j2000 images?  Is jpeg 2000 ahead of the curve, or just a flash in the pan?

I understand that a flattened image composite is stored when PSD compatibility is set, but I didn't know it was a JPEG (or that there's a JPEG preview in a PSD file at all, save for maybe a thumbnail).
Can you clarify that?  Is this JPEG preview you speak of the flattened composite, or are we talking about yet a different preview?
And do we lose more than just layers, but also color depth when we re-open a PSD through Camera Raw?

  • Different versions of Camera Raw launch from Bridge

I'm running Mac OS X 10.6.8, Bridge CS 4 (3.0.0.464), Camera Raw 5.0, PSE8, and using a Nikon D5000. I have .jpg files and .nef files. From Bridge I double click on a .nef file and Camera Raw launches - but with limited options (only three tabs for editing - Basic, Detail and Camera Calibration). If I click on a .jpg and choose Open in Camera Raw I get an instance of CR with many more options (Basic, Tone Curve, Detail, HSL / Grayscale, Split Toning, Lens Corrections, Camera Calibration, and Presets).
Wondering how to get the full set of options when editing a .nef file.
(I've tried updating the version of Bridge, resetting preferences and clearing the cache already).

    Actually, on looking closer:
When I open the .nef files (double click from Bridge), CR 5.5 launches.
When I open .jpg files (CR icon on toolbar or "Open in Camera Raw" menu option, also from Bridge), CR 5 launches.
How / why would I have two versions - and with different menu options?

  • Adobe Camera Raw: changing mode default from 8bit to 16bit

I'm using ACR 5.7 with Ps CS4 Mac. When I call up a DNG image, ACR always comes up in 8bit mode, and I have to manually change it to 16bit before converting. I used to have CS2 and ACR 3.x. It always came up in 16-bit. Whay can't ACR 5.7?

Not for nothing, but normally, the Camera Raw Worlflow Options should be sticky...meaning, whatever option you set should be picked up the next time you launch ACR. If this doesn't happen, it would be useful to know what OS you are working with (just Mac doesnt tell us much).

When I would open workflow preferences in the size block...I would have sever options...generally from 1.8mb size up to 21mb. Now I just have one choice...the default. How do I change that back to multiple choices??? many thanks... Greg

Is it possible you're looking in the wrong place?  You can now choose any size you want for a Camera Raw conversion.  It's very flexible.

  • Color managed workflow for web and camera raw

I recently calibrated my monitor and was wondering what is the preferred workflow for the web? I shoot with my camera in sRGB and my working space in Photoshop is sRGB aswell. The problem that has arised now is that the color managed colors in Photoshop are way different than the non-color managed in my web browser. Is this normal? And what I don't quite get is how a photo that has an embed sRGB profile looks the same in Firefox (that understand embed profiles) and Photoshop, but in Google Chrome (that does not recognize embed color profiles) shows the colors very differently, although the browser should understand the photo is in sRGB by default and show the same colors that are in Photoshop, right? So what happens here, because the colors are not the same? What information does Photoshop assign to the embed color profile that makes the colors so different?
Anyway, I assume the problem here seems to be my newly calibrated monitor profile. The only way I can get the same colors to my photo in Photoshop and to a photo in web is to use soft proofing set to my Monitor RGB AND save without a color profile. Is this the way to go? But here comes another problem. I shoot in RAW and use camera raw to edit my photos. Camera Raw doesn't allow soft proofing, so I'm stuck with these color managed colors that are so different from non-color managed colors I get in my browser that any color correction in Camera Raw is simply useless. Unless everyone was using color managed browsers and I could start to use fully color managed workflow, but that's not the case I suppose. So, what's the solution here?

First off, you need to be working in sRGB, or converting to sRGB when you save out files that are destined for the web. You can change the color space that Camera Raw (ACR) send your raw files to by clicking the blue text in the bottom center of the ACR window. This is probably that safest workflow for you until you get a handle on color management. If the color of your images is very important, you might consider embedding a color profile in them, which will help color managed browsers render your color properly.
If your display's color gamut is different than sRGB (many are), you'll find matching colors for non-color-managed browsers to be impossible. But consider the average display and take heart. The best you can do is correct to a standard and hope for the best.
Both the convert to sRGB and embed color profile options are in the save for web dialogue box.
