Camera Roll Limit?

Is there a limit to the amount of photos you can keep on the iPhone?
My wife has a 32GB iPhone 4 with about 20GB free but experienced an issue today.
The iPhone had about 1,400 photos on it. When attempting to go into the camera roll it crashed back to the springboard. When plugging into a PC it no longer showed up under My Computer so we could not delete or access the photos from there as usual.
I had to restore from iCloud and delete most of the photos as iCloud restored them to resolve the issue.
I know my wife should copy the photos off the phone every now and then to keep the number down but would of thought the phone could handle it with so much storage free.
As we could not access the camera roll and the phone stopped showing up in My Computer there was no easy way to remove photos to resolve this issue. Surely if there is a limit it should stop saving photos and not cause this issue.

For the camera roll, not that I'm aware of...I've seen iPhones with thousands of photos in the camera roll. However, as you've seen, this "can" lead to problems. Fact is, the iPhone camera roll is designed for short-term storage only. To prevent problems, photos should be imported/deleted from the camera roll on a regular basis.

  • How do I transfer my whole iPhone 4 Camera Roll to Win7 run PC?

How do I transfer the whole (not just the new photos, but the whole) of my camera roll on my iPhone 4 (using the latest software) to my (Win7) PC? I've done this before by simply going Computer > Josh's iPhone > Internal Storage > DCIM. Then at will I'd select and distribute my photos. However within the DCIM folder there are nine folders all with names such as 823WGTMA, 842GGLUF and 965YOKDJ.
Initially I thought it'd be a bit of hasstle having to go into each individual folder, selecting the photos, then copying them; but still do-able! Unfortunately upon trying to copy all the photos in the nine different folders to one folder (named Full Camera Roll) an error message came up saying Two Files Have The Same Name, or something to that effect, with only two options, Copy and Replace, or Don't Copy at all. No sign of Copy and keep Both. Now if it were just a few photos I would normally just edit each name manually, but I'm talking about moving several thousand photos!
In short, is there any way of transferring the whole camera roll without renaming each individual photo, and without gong to several different folders to get at them? If you did take the time to read this, thank you, and thank you if you take the time to offer any help!

I think you have dup names because the OS has started recycling the names.  There is a limit to how far it can go before that happens.  Take a look at the first and last folders on your phone and see if the numbers begin again.  If that's the case, you can copy the contents of all the folders except one of the ones containing the dupes to a single folder on your PC, but then you will have to copy any files with dup names into a different folder and rename them there before copying into your new single folder.  Here are instructions for doing that on Win 7:

  • With icloud set up on my 4GS I deleted photos from camera roll. I run an older PPC G5 with Lion which wont run icloud. Can I transfer pics from i stream to camera roll to allow a non-icloud back up to my PPC? Precious photos are close to 30 day cut-off

With i cloud set up on my 4GS I deleted photos from Camera Roll to make space knowing I would have them backed up on icloud via Photo Stream. I now find that my older PPC G5 with Lion which wont run icloud. I have an ipad3 too, which of course does. I want to copy photos from Photo Stream back to Camera Roll on the phone so that I can back up "old school" to iphoto on my ancient mac. The controls seem to suggest that as an option but when I select multiple photos in Photo Stream and select "Save to Camera Roll" the photos do not appear on Camera Roll as expected. I am running close to the 30 day limit and do not want to lose hundreds of precious photos (or have to email them to myself individually). Can the ipad3 help at all? Any ideas good people? Dan

If only it were that easy Winston. I connect with a USB cable, iphoto opens and I can only see the photos in Camera Roll, not Photo Stream. There does not seem to be a way of aceessing other files in the phone from iphoto and, as in my initial message, I can not transfer the photos to Camera Roll on the phone. My iphone and ipad software is up to date, but my iphoto is '08 version 7.1.5 with my mac running 10.5.8 which is the best I can do on the PPC without messing everything up.  I dont have the dough for a new mac or I would have gone for that option...am I stuck?

  • Why is my iCloud camera roll backup much larger than my camera roll?

    Hi,
I recently reached my iCloud backup limit and was looking for things to get rid of to improve this, after deleting a load of photos I had a bit more space, but checking the backup of my camera roll compared to the actual camera roll size on my iPhone the two are massively different - on the phone it says 4.8GB, whereas on the backup it says 7.8GB! Is there a reason for this? I have backed up since deleting the photos by the way, so that's not the issue.
    Thanks in advance.

Never mind, I found another discussion with the answer, I just turned camera roll off in my backup and then backed up before turning it back on and backing up again - it seems the backup was keeping the old photos for some reason.

  • Running out of internal storage space! Want to make room by deleting photos WITHOUT LOSING MY PHOTOS! Can I delete the Camera Roll yet still keep my photos in Photo Stream?? Will doing this free up ios storage? Does Photo Stream auto delete ever?

Hello, I am out of internal storage on my Iphone 4 ALREADY (Just purchased 3 months ago!). I need to clear up some space so I can do updates and take new photos. I was thinking about backing up my Photo Stream to the icloud and then deleting my Camera Roll.
1.) Is this a terrible idea??? I do NOT want to lose those photos! But I NEED more space on my phone!
2.) Will deleting Camera Roll free up space (a sufficient amount? My Camera Roll is at 4.5 GB)?
3.) Will deleting Camera Roll delete my photos from Photo Stream also? It doesn't seem to.
4.)  Does Photo Stream ever automatically delete photos???
5.)  Is there anyway I can save the pictures from my phone to my computer??? I can see the photos on my computer when viewing them through Photo Stream, but those are not permanent, correct?
This is one of the most ridiculous, confusing and unnessacary things I've ever known! Why oh why can't we just have a good ol' SD Card??? (My Droid never ever ran out of storage and I had it for 2 years...)
I tried backing up my photos in Itunes, but I don't have a new enough version. I tried downloading a new itunes and it still tells me I don't have the new version.
I have been working on this for 4 hours, its 2:30 am and I am going to bed. I am sorry I had to ask, but I've been searching and searching and just cannot find the answers. Thank you so much for your help!
6.) Also, I haven't been able to find the videos using the Icloud or the Photo Stream either...
7.) Do you have to have your device (pc) synced with icloud to access the info you backed up from iphone?? Like can I show my cousin my photos at her house using her computer by just loggin on??? Or can I only view my contacts, calender, mail, notifications, and such?
8.) Where on the icloud would one find text messages or other saved info??
Thank you so very much for helping me!!!

What I would say is best is to import the videos and photos to your computer so that you can delete camera roll photos with a copy of them in your possession:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht4083
In regards to backing up Photo Stream
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4486:
Does Photo Stream use my iCloud storage?
"No. Photos uploaded to My Photo Stream or Shared Photo Streams do not count against your iCloud storage."
However, you can do the tedious task of moving your camera roll pictures to photo stream by ensuring photo stream is turned on for your device and take a screen shot of each picture in your camera roll to move it over.
To take a screen shot, just press the "Home Button" and the "Sleep/Wake Button" at the same time while viewing the image.
1.)  It's not a terrible idea, it can be tedious though.
2.)  Deleting a bunch of photos/videos from a camera roll 4.5GB in size can definitely free up space
3.)  Photo Stream photos, as you said, appear to stay upon deleting the photos.  (Tested it personally)
4.)  Photo Stream has a limit according to:  (http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4858)
Essentially, it won't erase your photos until you tell it to.
    5.)  http://support.apple.com/kb/ht4083  (As shown above)
6.)  To update iTunes, you must download and then "Run" the download you get off the website.  Otherwise you will just have an installer program sitting there not updating iTunes.
7.)  You can bring up your Photo Stream pictures anywhere you have Photo Stream capabilities.  For a computer at someone else's house, they would have to have the iCloud control panel (http://support.apple.com/kb/dl1455) on their computer and be signed into their Photo Stream and viewing your profile's pictures (http://support.apple.com/kb/ts4379)
8.)  On iCloud, you can backup your text messages, but you cannot view them independently on www.icloud.com.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht4859
"You get 5 GB of free iCloud storage for:
Photos and videos in the Camera Roll
Device settings (for example: Phone Favorites, Wallpaper, and Mail, Contacts, Calendar accounts)
    App data
    Home screen and app organization
    Messages (iMessage, SMS, and MMS)
    Ringtones
    Visual Voicemails"
Hope some of this information helps!

  • No Photos are saving in the camera roll anymore (original iphone)

This is a new problem, but the first one Ive ever had with this phone. Yesterday, whenever I would take a picture, it showed that it was taken in the Photo Albums section. But when I went into the Camera Roll's folder, there were no pictures.
I synced the phone today (updating to the newest software that was recently released), and I'm still having the same problem. I've taken 4 pictures since the update, but the camera roll shows "No Photos".
(For additional information, I do have 50% memory or more free... so I know it's not a memory issue. I have also restarted my phone)
    Any suggestions? or similar issues?

    This should be helpful:

I think I may have found what “triggers” this. I noticed that my last successfully saved image on my iPhone was IMG_0999.JPG.
I’m guessing that the bug in the iPhone is that the photo counter doesn’t handle image numbers greater than 999.
After the restore procedure described here, I’m guessing the image number goes back to 0001, but that the problem will reappear 998 images from now.

Re: Photo taken do not appear in Photos on iPhone anymore !
Well appears it had nothing to do with iTunes indeed.
Read quite a few threads of disappearing photos issues and was really not thrilled at the prospect of restoring and going through the process of reinstalling apps, settings etc... Cannot stand going through command lines either!
Instead I tried the http://www.ecamm.com/mac/phoneview/ application and deleted as instructed the .MISC folder inside the /DISC/DCIM folder.
    Worked!!!
Interesting thing: right after that my pictures counter started at IMG_00001 etc... which could suggest indeed a 'bug' with the photo counter that reaches a limit and must be manually reset to 00000

  • Syncing photo's from iphoto adds another 'photo library' without deleting 'camera roll' photo

    Hi there,
I found that I can add photo's (without deleting my existing camera roll) to my Iphone 4 from my girlfriends mac to my iphone by syncing from iphoto and selecting the photo events or folder I want. Then pressing 'apply' adds a new photo library to my phone with these selected pics in them. In this cercumstance I can only delete these photos using the same process by de-selecting them in 'sync from iphoto' and again pressing 'apply' There is no function / icon in my actual iphone to delete this library or even individual photo.
However when I try this exact same process on my girlfriends Iphone 4 (same model) the 'apply' function threatens to delete all photos from her phone, leaving her with ONLY the ones selected / checked.
Just in case it is part of explaining this I have tried this logged in on my account and hers but both have the same results in every combination. There appear to be two different set of rules going on here within I-tunes I would prefer to be able to add photo's without deleting existing ones but I would also like to be able to selectively delete these photo's once on my phone without going back to connect to tha mac.
Can anyone explain if this is possible or am I asking for 'my cake AND eat it' ?
Why are ther differences in our phones governing rules in Itunes?

Thanks Winston, you are correct "sync". In fact I found the answer in a slightly different way. There is a check-box in the photo's tab that provides for syncing photo's before any media. Therefore this will in fact create the necessary space on the ATV for the photo's by moving other media content from syncing to streaming.
Of course the alternative, as you point out is to limit what actually gets synced in custom sync.
Thanks for taking the time to respond.

  • HT201401 When I click on an image to save it and go to look at it in my camera roll, it isn't there but an old pic I deleted is. What's happening?

Sometimes I see photos I like and save them to use as reference for various projects. Lately when I save the image and go to my camera roll for a better look, the image I saved is not there but an old photo I deleted is in it's place. The old photo shows up in the thumbnails but if I click on it to view it, it's a black square. What is happening?

  • Merging large camera rolls in photo stream for iCloud merge/backup/share

I've got some pretty large camera rolls on my iPhone, never having realized I wasn't "synching" them to my iPad. Well, I looked at them and saw some large ones, as well as 1.000 photos in my iPhone my photo stream.  I'd like iCloud to keep them sync he'd between the two, but can I do that? If I can, how do I take all the camera rolls and all those photos and get them into the my photo stream? There didn't seem to be a way to copy them, that I could see on my iPhone.
is it because the my photo stream size limit is 1,000?
and if not! how do I mass copy all those pics into the my photo stream?
and once I synch those, had do I synch them with the same iCloud account on my MacBook? That also seems like a problem, although Id ultimately like them there, because the faces, events, etc stuff in iPhoto seems really well done, plus, I've got the largest disk by far in my MacBook compared to the RAM in my iPhone & iPad.
any help would be really appreciated!
    Thanks!

    Hi Mike,
Something else you may want to set up. If you have the same iCloud account set up on the Mac and you have Photo Stream turned on in iCloud, then in iPhoto, under Preferences>Photo Stream, you can turn on the option to automatically import your Photo Stream into iPhoto. That way, you have a backup of your Photo Stream that is saved in iPhoto Events every Month:
I have mine set up to do this, and I find it to be a great backup to my regular imports. I leave my Photo Stream imports out there as they are generated in Events (June 2013 Photo Stream, July 2013 Photo Stream, etc.). I also then import my Camera Roll every month or so, and import it into an Album that I label as desired. Photo Stream, of course, only has photos, no videos, so importing your Camera Roll is critical if you take videos.
Post back after you have set things up if you have any questions!
    Cheers,

  • IPhone Camera Roll over 3200 pics, SLOW, has duplicate pics in My Computer

My iPhone has over 3200 pics I've taken on it, I like these pics on the Camera Roll because it allows me to view life events in order since the day I got the iPhone. Two problems here:
    1) When plugged into my PC if I open the camera directly in My Computer it shows a lot of photos with the same photo ID name two or three times, and when select all, copy, then paste somewhere it does not get all the photos. If I open the files with the same names before copying they all open the same picture, so they really are referencing the same pic. Do you think this is too many files for Windows to handle?
    2) The camera takes FOREVER to open and take/save a picture. I don't see how opening the camera app has anything to do with how many photos I have on my phone yet they are directly related somehow. I have a lot of extra room on the phone, it is not full.
    3) With this many photos its great for viewing in order, but to get to the middle of the album is frustrating. You can't see what DATE the pics were taken on the phone. The contact list search system would work well here with a "scroll bar" on the right that you can slide and instantly jump in your album to a specific place, perhaps listing dates or months/years on the right.
I hope all these issues are fixed via software soon, and if not, then hopefully the 3G S fixes them since a 3MP cam will be even larger amounts of data to load up on the phone while the camera lens is opening.

This is just my 2 cents...I am by no means an expert on this.
What it sounds like could be happening is that in Windows it may be initially seeing a thumbnail or an associated file with the photo. (probably due to the amount of photos). As for the app itself I believe that even though you have plenty of room on the phone itself, with that many photos it could be maxing out the RAM inside the phone for that particular app. (unfortunately the only way arround this would be to limit the amount of photos).
As for the software, I would agree that there should be some kind of "album" or sorting feature w/in the app, without having to go through the computer to create such a thing. (the best approach to this is to offer a suggestion through official channels to get a change) Link below.

iCloud only give so much space for free storage, then if you exceed the limit of 5gb you have to pay for additional storage.

Photo Stream is not a backup.
Photo Stream has a limit so is temporary.
iTunes does not handle the import of photos/videos from any digital camera including from the iPhone's Camera Roll.
Photos/videos in the Camera Roll can be imported by your computer as with any other digital camera.

  • Could someone explain photostream, camera roll and photo albums?

I have a new iPHONE 5C, but am very confused in what are, and differences between, the iPHONE's camera roll, photo stream, and photo albums.
If someone could explain what these are, what they do, I'd appreciate it.
RIght off the bat, I understand photos and videos I take with my 5C first get stored in the unit's camera roll. Is that right?
OK, then I get confused as to / how to add (separate) my photos/videos into photo albums.
Also, I get confused as to IF I'd want to delete photos from photo albums, does that mean they ALSO get deleted from my 5C's camera roll (or internal memory somewhere?)
I just took 20 precious videos that I cannot afford to lose... should I backup these 20 videos first to my HP laptop PC (I have Windows 7 OS) before I try to copy to a photo album I'd want to create just for these 20 videos??
My icloud (don't even understand what icloud is or how it works! ) is full - so I'd like to delete photos I don't really care for from my 5C - will that give me more space in the iCLOUD for backups?
I'm very confused... any tips/pointers here would be appreciated. Thank you!

    Hi TurquoiseBlue
    Welcome to Apple Support Communities!
I will be happy to help you today.
So what I will do is explain the difference and if you have any other issue I will respond to them ASAP.
Camera Roll: This is every photo that has been take on this device and once it is deleted I will be deleted from all folders on that Phone however it will be backed up to iCloud Photos if it is enabled on your device.
My Photo Stream: This is a place where every photo you have taken in the last 30 days (with I think a limit of 10,000) are stored. The images here are all images taken on any device that used the same iCloud/Apple iD as the phone. So this means that if you took a picture on your iPod 15 days and it uses the same account as your iPhone the image taken will be on your iPhone and any other iOS and Mac OS X device that have the same account under Photo Stream. My Photo Stream is basically the Cloud storage of images.
Photo Albums: Consist of all images from the Camera role that have also been placed into an album. So if you want to sort some images from the camera role and have them in folders such as wedding, birthdays e.c.t these images will be there AND in the Camera role. If you delete the images from an album other than Camera role the images will go from that folder but will remain in the Camera role. If you delete an image from the Camera Role it will be removed from Camera Role and any other folder that is created.
Basically photos work like a flow chart.
    Image Taken ⇒ Camera Role.
If there is iCloud Photos on: image ⇒ Photo Stream and therefore accessible on another iOS/Mac OS X device using same iCloud/Apple iD.
Just to repeat as I know this is crucial and important information.
If an image is deleted from Camera Role that image is wiped from the device. However there is still a copy of that photo in iCloud Photos but remember those images are only there for 30 days so don't rely on it to keep that image.
Delete an image from photo stream it is wiped from the iCloud sync of that image to all iOS/Mac OS X device using iCloud Photos using same iCloud/Apple iD. YOU WILL STILL HAVE THAT IMAGE IN CAMERA ROLE HOWEVER.
Photo Albums. Delete an image there and it will be removed JUST from the folder. Delete and image from Camera Role that is also in a folder and it will be wiped from the Camera role and Photo Album. However there is still a copy of that photo in iCloud Photos but remember those images are only there for 30 days so don't rely on it to keep that image.
Just quickly iCloud Photos is a way of keeping a cloud copy of those photos on all your iOS/Mac OS X device using the same iCloud/Apple iD as I am sure you have worked out already.
With iCloud Photos you can also share images using a shared photo stream where people can add, comment and like images there.
In short don't rely on iCloud Photos to keep an image if you want to delete an image from the photo stream because most likely when you will want the image, it will be gone.
Of course Apple might explain it better than me and so this link should verify what I said and reinforce what iCloud Photos does: http://www.apple.com/icloud/icloud-photo-sharing.html
Many Thanks and I look forward to hearing from you soon!

  • My camera roll is barely empty but says capacity almost full due to old phone picures from old that I can't view. HELP!!

My phone only has 200 pictures but capacity says I have almost reached my limit with over 1,000 pictures I cant view. I synced somehow my old pictures from my old phone. How do I clear my space? Help!!

That's normal.  You can't see photo stream photos on icloud.com.  You can only see them on an iOS device or computer that is signed into your account with photo stream enabled.
Also, photo stream photos are not backed up, only camera roll photos are.  Photo stream photos will stay in iCloud for 30 days so connecting to your photo stream will enable you to access photo stream photos from the last 30 days.

  • Photo App Displays Unorganized Pictures (Camera Roll starts over at 1,000)

I finally bought an iPhone 4.
    =)
BUT, i backed up my 3GS and restored from back up to my iPhone 4.
When i first opened my pics app it said rebuilding so i let it rebuild.
Now my Camera Roll starts over at 1,000.
SO now every pic i had past 1,000 from my 3gs is displayed at the top instead in the order they were taken.

Just so you know, the camera roll is a temp place for photos. While yes part of a backup, they are not put in a place for you to really access or store them.
You really should be taking pictures off the camera roll often and keeping it as clear as possible. It is a separate partition in a way from the rest of the OS and shows up as a digital camera to your computer and why you can access them directly outside of iTunes.
Photos should be taken off by you then if you want them on the phone you can sync them back to their own albums. One, this ensures you have real copies on your computer (that you have your own backup and storage practice) as well as makes it so it doesn't have to waste time trying to back them up each time since you have them on your computer.
There is also a limit to how much the Camera Roll can hold as I mentioned it is a separate partition sort of and not meant for long term storage.
