Camera roll usage - too high

The camera roll, on my iPad2, is showing 3.8GB usage, even though it is empty!  I have followed all advice seen on forums and discussions, except a restore, as I don't want to loose children's in-app work.  Anyone have any ideas?

Did you reset your iPad? First thing to try is to reset your device. Press and hold the Home and Sleep buttons simultaneously ignoring the red slider should one appear until the Apple logo appears. Let go of the buttons and let the device restart. See if that fixes your problem.

  • Camera roll usage doesn't correspond with number of pictures in app

I am trying to make more space to install iOS 7 so have been sorting photos. In settings, my camera roll usage is showing as 4.6GB, but in the photos app I only have 26 photos on the camera roll. Why is this? I have recently synced the ipad with my computer but this didn't rectify the problem. Also, if I place a photo in an album, does this this mean that the photo will take up double the amount of space? Cheers

Are messages with all the pictures and videos sent between you and your friends listed somewhere below, or not?

  • In photo albums, photo roll icon too high, will not open?

In the photo album menu. Photo roll category is too high under album header, will not come down. Will not open, unable to touch it to open. Any suggestions?

Try resetting your iPhone - Press the Home and On/Off buttons at the same time and hold them until the Apple logo appears (about 10 seconds).

  • System CPU usage too high

Hi, i've been trying to troubleshoot this problem for some months.. everytime i try to use perfmon or another program to watch for network usage (download and upload) the System process spikes to 13%~ constantly until i close it.. I could "live"
without that but now everytime i'm using an application on my second monitor, the same thing happens... started happening just an hour ago, and it's really bothering me because i don't have a clue what driver could possibly cause this.
I've tried capturing xperf traces on another forum but they keep come as corrupted as the person whose trying to troubleshoot with me tells me, and i can't seem to get a grip of the xperf analyser myself to see what (driver?) is using the cpu so i can try
    to replace it...
Anyway, as i type this it jumped up to 20% and i don't know what to do.
I'll upload two xperf traces here, but at least one is "corrupted" as the other kind member on the other forums told me. (which is the first one below)
    https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/36066558/highCPUUsage.7z
    https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/36066558/highCPUUsage2.7z
And the one i just recorded, https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/36066558/highCPUUsage3.7z
Does someone have another way or can help me find what's causing it?
I used the command xperf -on latency -stackwalk profile -buffersize 1024 -MaxFile 512 -FileMode Circular && timeout -1 && xperf -d highCPUUsage.etl
I took a print of the System process Threads in Process Explorer http://i.imgur.com/vbW36rU.png
Before the today's change, the function shown there was mostly ntoskml.exe!KeGetCurrentProcessorNumberEx+0x34, i don't know if that means anything...
    Thanks.

First Xperf has been replaced by Windows performance recorder.  Second there was almost no data recorded in your trace.  Please run a windows performance trace as instructed in the wiki and upload it.  Make sure you run the trace when the
    problem is happening
In order to diagnose your problem we need to run Windows performance toolkit the instructions for which can be found in
    this wiki

  • Why is my iPhone Camera Roll using 10.0 GB but my Photo Library only using 6.3 GB?

When I look at usage in my iPhone, Camera Roll is using 10.0 GB, but Photo Library is only using 6.3 GB. I do not have Photo Stream enabled. Why the difference?

In my case, Camera Roll is just the pictures taken on my phone and the remainder of the photos on my phone were synced from my computer via iTunes and are under "Photo Library". If you go to Photos and then tap Albums at the bottom right, it will show which pictures are in the Camera Roll. My Camera Roll usage is much smaller than Photo Library as I only have 2 pictures there since I regularly import them to my computer where I have more control and extra backup capability. I then sync back some that I want to also have on the phone.

  • Camera roll storage seems too high

my camera roll says it has taken up 22gb of storage but I only have approx 650 photo and 2hours worth of videoing on there, does this seem right, I do not have sharing or streaming on
    Thanks for any advice

  • Camera roll is empty, but usage claims space is being used

Hi all. I hope someone can help me with this.
My camera roll contains no items. I upload all new pictures and videos to OneDrive and then delete them from the camera roll to save the hassle of connecting my iPhone 5s to my Mac to copy them.
I've never lost items using this technique; that's not the issue here. The issue is when I go to Settings>General>Usage>Photos & Camera the camera roll is apparently using 63.4MB of storage space on my device.
This also happened after I migrated from my 4s to my 5s. My camera roll was empty but was allegedly using over 700MB of storage. I attempted to resolve this by using an iCloud backup and omitting the camera roll, which resolved the issue but caused more serious problems, one of which was preventing me from syncing music to my device.
I have a 64GB device so I'm not very short on storage, but I don't like the idea of something taking space on my device for no good reason (that's why I don't use Photo Stream anymore, by the way). Besides, 700MB was far too much to lose for something that was, for all intents and purposes, empty.
I eventually decided to reset my 5s entirely and set it up as a new device. This thankfully reset the camera roll back to zero bytes, but it's once again started culminating seemingly redundant storage usage. Thanks to iCloud most of my apps have retained their data, so I'm not too bothered about having to do this, but I'd rather not have to make it a habit every time my empty camera roll takes up close to a gigabyte of storage.
Has anyone else come across this issue? Can anything be done about it?

    I tried to do this:
Settings > General > Usage > Photos & Camera > swipe on Camera Roll and tap Delete.
But it does not give me an option to delete - no Edit button, no swiping Delete button. Is that a glitch or am I missing something?
Also, I read about iExplorer and tried a demo - there were quite a few files under a folder labeled DMIV or something...tried to delete but they wanted me to buy the software before I could. Don't know if this is a scam or if there are hidden photo files which is what it seems like.

  • Iphone 4s, camera roll photos disappeared but still seem to be there is a usage

hello my photos in the camera roll have disappeared and i cant find them aywhere, but when i look at my usage on photos and videos in settings it has a high usage like all my photos and videos are there,my background on the homepage still has my photo and my contact photos are still there but they just seem not to be in camera roll where they use to be, it was the old ios 5 when i noticed, i have just updated to 6 today and it is still the same can anybody help me with this please? very furstrating
    thank you

If a restore does not bring them back, then they are gone.
You should never rely on the iphone backup for your camera roll.
Camera roll is temporary storage.  You should import these pics to your computer regularly as you would with any digital camera.  Once on your computer, you can include them in your regular backup of your computer.

I don't know about your camera roll, but for photostream just do this:
Go into Settings > iCloud > Delete Account and then sign back in using your Apple ID information.
Make sure to do the same thing with your iTunes and App Store options.
Settings > iTunes and App Store > Click Email and sign out, then sign back in.

  • HT204022 When a photo that is included in photo stream is deleted from cameraroll it should ask whether we want to delete it from photostream too, shouldn't it? How do I delete a bad photo from camera roll and photo stream? I have to delete it twice???

80% percent of photos we take are bad photos, we delete them later when reviewing them. Now the photos are in both camerroll and photostrean. When we delete them from the camera roll they do not get deleted from photo stream, when I delete them from photo stream they do not get deleted from camera roll.
I want to keep good photos only in both photo stream and camera roll. How do I do it? Delete them twice?? What a waste of time.
When a photo is deleted from camera roll it should ask whether we want to delete it from photo stream too. Otherwise photo stream is useless.I remove bad photos from camera roll but they all stay in the photo stream ...

    Hi JM,
Even 20 days later, the answer is the same.....you have to delete photos from them individually - they are kept in separate places, so you have to delete them from both if you don't want them. However, photostream will, eventually, "delete" the bad photos, since it only keeps up to 1000, and then starts overlaying the oldest ones....
    Sorry....

    Try trash the following file
    com.apple.ImageCaptureNotifications.DeviceDiscoveryDatabase.501 from

At 1.3GB available, your storage space is getting very thin no matter what you do further.  As long as you have the photo's in the camera roll saved on your computer you can delete them.  Just make sure first that they are in your photo software.  If updating in iTunes, just backup/sync first, then update, and that will save the camera roll in the backup as well.
At only 1.3GB you eventually are going to find yourself unable to install or update some app, or unable to take any new pictures, or some other limitation that will force you to free up space anyway.  So now, before updating, sounds like a good time to make sure everything is backed up or stored somewhere else, and clean house a bit, then update.

  • Why are some photos on camera roll but not in photo stream. Unable to backup as camera roll size is too big for free 5gb.

Why are some photos on camera roll but not in photo stream. Unable to backup as camera roll size is too big for free 5gb.

I assume you have Photostream on, correct?
In order for the photos to be moved into Photostream, you must exit the camera app, and be on a wifi connection.  Both of these criteria must be met before the sync occurs.

  • Do you miss camera rolls, too?

Understandably events took the place of camera rolls and perhaps how you view them boils down to a matter of semantics, but I really, really, really miss camera rolls in iPhoto. At the very least ...
Why am I unable to delete an event in iPhoto? Unless I am wrong—is there a way to delete an event without deleting the photos from the library that make up the said event?
The fact of the matter is that the one random photo that I took of a shoe with my iPhone yesterday hardly constitutes an event. I take a lot of random pictures with my iPhone. Some of which come out beautiful and I wish to preserve for future reference. Of course one could make an album, but that still does not dismiss the fact that events go awry.
The simple solution would be for Apple to grant users the ability to fully manage what constitutes an event. Personally, I would rather put in the work to hand-select the photos that make up the "birthday parties", "holiday", "apple store openings", but why make that selection for me? The automation was supposed to help with organization, not makes for more of an organizational nightmare.
Additionally, I understand I could ignore Events in my sidebar altogether, but again, that still does not dismiss the fact that it will never be organized—in turn, if I want true events, I will have to manually make albums.
Anyone else feel the same way, or am I just OCD?

Roll back in the forum to - oh, three years ago - for a fuller discussion on this. Camera Rolls last appeared in iPhoto 6. At the time there were those who complained about the functionality and those who complained about the word.
Events and Rolls are functionally the same apart from one difference:
A Roll was an arbitrary grouping of photos based on when they were imported.
An Event is an arbitrary grouping of photos based on when they were shot.
Why am I unable to delete an event in iPhoto? Unless I am wrong—is there a way to delete an event without deleting the photos from the library that make up the said event?
Just like Rolls. You couldn't delete Rolls without deleting their content either. Rolls and Events are a view of the Library. Just like Rolls, every photo is in an Event. If you want to delete an Event either a: Delete the pics within or b: move the pics within to another Event. Just like Rolls.
The fact of the matter is that the one random photo that I took of a shoe with my iPhone yesterday hardly constitutes an event.
Don't get hung up on a Word. It's only 5 letters of marketing to describe a group of photos taken at the same time. An Event is a folder with some pics. That's all. With a bit of practise, you can train yourself to think "bucket" or "folder" or "shoebox" instead of Event.
Folks used complain that pics they took in January were in the same Roll as pics they took in September, just because they hadn't imported in between.
The simple solution would be for Apple to grant users the ability to fully manage what constitutes an event.
But they do. You can move photos to other Events. Merge them. Create new ones. All the things you could do with... Rolls. In other words, all you have to do is merge any new Events created when you import to have... a Roll with a fancy icon.
Like Rolls, they're quite limited too. A photo can be in only one Event without duplicating the file and so on.
Events are for people who can't be bothered organising. It's simple, date-based and requires no thought. So, for such folks, Events are helpful.
For other folks there are all the other tools: Albums, Keywords, Smart Albums etc etc etc.
I use Events simply as big buckets of Photos: Spring 08, July - Nov 06 are typical Events in my Library. For organising: I use keywords and Smart Albums extensively.
    Regards
    TD
