Camera setup for recording lectures

Sorry this is a bit OT... but I will be using iMovie and I figure there are plenty of folk here who know more about video than me! I'm fairly well up on SLRs and still cameras but not at all about video.
I work for a training company, running lecture-style day-long courses, usually with a single speaker and about 10-20 students. I'm looking to record the sessions - ultimately to possibly sell them but initially just to provide a sample on our site.
Can anyone offer any advice as to what I'd need to get set up? What features to look for in a camera and perhaps any specific recommendations? I probably don't need HD video final size but I guess if I record in HD it will enable me to crop/pan/zoom after the fact if I don't have anyone manning the camera all the time.
The camera will probably be about 5 metres or so from the speaker - assume I'll need an external microphone, are there decent wireless ones around?
My budget is whatever it needs to be, but I'd like to keep it tight at this stage as it's fairly exploratory at the moment. MTIA for any ideas!

my wife had a Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) and lost the use of her right side. She just got an iPad for Christmas and asked the same question so she could take pictures with her left hand. I scoured the internet and after coming up with nothing I found that if you go to: Settings-General choose the option 'use side switch' change it from mute to lock rotation. I don't know about you, but I never use the mute button, so it makes sense to leave it permanently selected. Then flip your iPad to take the picture. The only downside is the words by the button are upside down, but it works! The picture is stored as a normal image as well. I hope this helps you, I can't wait to go home today and show my wife. Good luck to you!

  • Best equipment for recording lectures to publish as podcasts for class?

I am in an Anatomy class this fall (pre-nursing) and several of the students have expressed the need to record the lectures for studying later. I'd like to record them in a way that will work with my Mac, as the cheapy recorders you can pick up at say, WalMart, don't seem to work well with Mac's. Ideally, they would be recorded in a fashion that they could easily be published as podcasts for the other students to download.
    So where should I start?
    Thanks!

Does your classroom have AV equipment already in place? You might be able to leverage that. I was teaching in a large lecture theatre last Fall and I had to wear a wireless FM lapel mic which was connected to the classroom console and the classroom speakers. The technicians that set-up the classroom had an audio cable with a mini-jack that I could plug into my MacBook and I used QuickTime to record the lectures. It worked very slick.
I presume you want to walk around the classroom and not be tethered to your computer as you teach. What I'm interested in is finding out if there is a way to wear a Bluetooth headset, have it communicate with my Macbook, and record everything using QuickTime -- the reason being that when I teach again in Winter, my classroom won't have the FM mic. I haven't been able to find a definitive answer on this and I'd like to before I plunk down $$ for a BlueTooth headset.

  • Airport Extreme - IP Camera Setup for Internet Viewing

I just purchased the Airport Extreme N router and I'm trying to configure it to view 2 IP Cameras I have over the Internet. The settings are a bit different from my old router (Dlink DIR-655) and I can't seem to find any instructions. I have succesully set up the 1st IP camera and can view it over the Internet, but I can't seem to get things set up for the 2nd camera - but since I can't find any instructions, I'm just shooing in the dark.
Here's what I have so far:
Camera 1 Settings: Port 80, Port 554 (for RTSP), Port Range 50000-54999(RTSP)
Camera 2 Settings: Port 82, Port 556 (for RTSP), Port Range 55000-60000(RTSP)
    Airport Setup:
Port Mapping: I selected "Quicktime Streaming Server" from the dropdown
    Public TCP Ports: 554, 7070
    Public UDP Ports: 80
Private IP Address: 10.0.1.3 (address of camera)
    Private TCP Ports: 554, 7070
    Private UDP Ports: 80
Using these settings, I can successfully access this camera from the Internet using my public IP address.
I've tried setting up "camera 2" using port 82 and port 556 to match the camera, but this must not be correct becuase I can't access the camera. I really don't understand what the "7070" is, but it won't let me keep that for camera 2 - so I changed it to 7072. I'm assuming this is my problem. I don't understand what this 7070 means and what this should be changed to for the 2nd camera.
Also, I'm not sure what to do with the port range that I entered on my old router. I'm not sure where to put that range in the Airport router.
Can someone please explain how this should be configured?
    Thanks!

Just to be sure... are you talking about the new square AirPort Extreme base station (AEBS)?
    or the older round AEBS?
Only the new square AEBS supports a hard drive connected to the USB port.

  • Suggested Setup for Recording

    Hey -
I'm recording some conference calls with Skype. Up to now, they have been "listen only" conference calls.
Now, I'll actually be doing some inteviews, though. I've been recording via ProTools.
Currently, the audio output of my Mac goes directly into one of the inputs on my ProToosl recording interface. I monitor all "system soudns" and "audio output" of the Mac through my ProTools system that way.
I was about to purchase a good headset - but in doing so, I would either have to plug the mic into the input, and leave the headset jack unconnected (because I need the audio going into ProTools).
But if I do that - I'm sure while I'm monitoring via the speakers that I'd get feedback through the headset mic going into the computer.
I suppose I could get a little "splitter" to split the audio out ... like a "Y-cable" ... which I could send audio to the headset ... and also send audio out of the Mac into ProTools (and of course, have the monitoring volume turned OFF during the recording) ...
[EDIT] I just looked, and I already have a Y-cable back there - coming out of my Mac audio is a Y that splits into two female RCA, as I have Stereo monster cables (L&R) going to the "ALT SRC IN" RCA inputs on the back of ProTools hardware ... so, obviously, I could plug the headset mic cable into the back of the G4, and the headset's audio into the headphones out of the ProTools device ... but seeing how the ProToosl hardware is one the total other side of the recoring desk from the CPU, I doubt the headset cables would "split" that far.[EDIT ENDED]
but is there a "better way"? Am I missing something?
    Thanks
    FRED

    Fred,
I was doing the same thing you are trying and it was always a little bit kludgy.
By recording everything (host and guest) on the same computer, I always had to keep their level really low of risk sending their signal back to them resulting in an annoying echo for them.
What I do now is use CallRecorder from Ecamm
    http://www.ecamm.com/mac/callrecorder/
It records both you and your guest to seperate tracks in a QuickTime file. Works really well. I just use my condenser mic through my mixer into the computer and I get great sound for me (the host). Then, I get the best audio quality from the Skype call since I don't have to mess around with their level.
To monitor their audio without mixing it with mine, I just send the computer's output to my control room output and it just get's sent to my headphones. Easy. That way I can monitor myself and hear them at the same time.
After the call is recorded, I just open the file in QT, hit Command-J and pan me to the left and them to the right and export as an AIFF. IF you have more than one track, you can either mix them in QT or export several passes turning different channels on and off for each pass.
    Hope that helps.

  • Easy setup for capturing 12 bit Hi8 through a mini DV camera?

    Hi,
I have some old Hi8 tapes that are recorded in 12 bit audio. Unfortunately the easy setup for a converter doesn't seem to let you specify 12 bit audio, so I'm getting awful sync problems. I know I could record all the footage onto mini DV tapes, but is there an alternative? Is there any way of adding an easy setup that would do what I want?
    Mark
    Dual 2.5 GHz G5   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   FCE 3.5HD

If you just use the MiniDV camera in passthrough mode, it will work fine. The audio out of the Hi8 should be analog, which specifies no specific bit depth. So as long as you have your MiniDV set up to 16bit, that's what it will send to the computer.

  • How do I use optical input for recording in Garageband 9?

    Hi,
I'm trying to use the Optical Line Input on my G5 for recording in Garageband, using a MOTU 828. I have the 828 optical output connected to the optical audio input on the G5, and I have Digital In (Optical digital-in port) selected in system preferences/sound. But in Garageband preferences, optical or digital input is not among my choices. If I select system setting or built-in audio 2, I get no signal. If I select MOTU 828, it defaults to the analog master outputs on the 828.
I am a Logic 8 user, and I'm able to select the optical input in Logic with no problem. I have my MOTU audio setup set so that the optical output is the default output, but Garageband still seems to use the analog output. I can tell by the record level, which is considerably louder for analog than for optical.
    Any suggestions?

  • SSL Certificate setup for Web/Address Book/iCal in 10.7 Lion?

I know nothing about certificates. I plan to use my Mini server to help manage my family's computers which are pretty spread out across the U.S. My plan is to use profile manager for device management, host a couple websites (one secure for home security cams) and share address books and calendars. This is as much a geek gadget project as it is "useful" so I understand I may be creating some work for myself
Anyway, can someone walk me through the correct setup for certificates? My research is showing me a LOT of options/parameters. Due to the expense, i don't want to create one just to find it won't serve my purposes.
Also, I think i'm going with RapidSSL...$50 is the cheapest I've come across...hopefully the offer what I need?

I have just spent 30 minutes on the phone to a pleseant chap in Athens, and now have a solution.
We tried several options and the final one worked - so simple.
Click on the apple symbol > system preferences > iCloud > disable contact sync > keep contacts
Check search, in my case it worked for the first time in several weeks :-)
then re-enable contact sync as follows:
Click on the apple symbol > system preferences > iCloud > re-tick contacts > merge contacts
    Search still works
    Hallelujah!

  • Why opening from java the rpt search for a JNDI when it's setup for a DNS ?

I downloaded CR for eclipse 2.
All is 'quite' working froma a java app.
i've only a problem with an 'jndi name search error'. I'll try to explain.
In the RPT i use a DSN connection to a sql server into a differente machine. When I open directly the rpt, all is working.
From java code, i'll open the report, but when i try to export  to pdf iit tell me about an error 'jndi name search error', with the name of the DSN connection i setup.
Why? Why opening rpt all is working, but opening from code NOT is working ?
What's the difference from two opening methods? Why an .rpt opened from java cannot just open the connection like when opened from cristal report !?
*My question is: why opening from java the rpt search for a JNDI when it's setup for a DNS connection ?! *

The .rpt has been originally created from an ancient version of Cristal report. probably the '8'.
In an italian software called 'Business', the .rpt is populated for printing of invoices and similar docs.
My society is trying to 'integrate' our software with the .rpt used from our customer.
So we want simply open .rpt, add a new logo, set the selection for record and save as pdf.
We so bought Cristal report 2008 (v.12 ), opened the .rpt, saved (so it 's now in a supported version).
The sql server is located at 10.1.2.40, and is a Microsoft Sql Server.
In my development pc I've installed Cr 12. I added a User DSN to point to Sql server at 10.1.2.40, at right DB with username and password. Opening from my development machine the .rpt and 'running' it, it display the data. Ok !
    I downloaded CR4 Eclipse 2.
I open report using the unmanaged sdk. (to access it through file system, not via RAS), Ok.
    I set selection record. Ok.
I execute .export with 'PDF' for format option and here I get an exception: the JNDI name 'CPR'  is not found. Where CPR is the DSN name setup into .rpt from Cristal Report 2008.
So, no, i'm not trying to using the designer from Eclipse, but from the full application. But I must use the rpt at runtime to export some rendered records.
What must I do to do this?
CR4E only supports java based connections, so it is looking for the JDBC/JNDI name and won't look at the DSN's.
How Can i setup at runtime a JDBC / JNDI connection ?
I already have a 'connection' from my code to the sql server, using sqlserver jdbc driver v. 4 from microsoft. And executing query I see the results. So i have right driver, ip, db name, user name and password
But is there a way to simply tell at runtime to my .rpt to use THIS connection? Or a similar connection...
Thanks in advance for help provided to us. (we bought a CR license only for this work...)

I have a JVC video camera and it records the video to a .mod format (which Apple devices don't support). I figured out how to get them to iPhoto using iMovie but I want to be able to get the videos on my iPad 2 but it won't let it sync. Any help?

Thanks for that. Much more constructive than the last comment. It's only the restriction code I can't recall, not the access passcode. So I can currently access the device, just not age restricted content. Does that's make a difference? I also wondered if anyone knew how many attempts you get to try to get it right. Now tried 21 times and so far nothing bad has happened but I am concerned I'll eventually be completely locked out of the device. That doesn't seem in the spirit of things though. Surely it's foreseeable that a child could repeatedly try to guess the code so I can't see that it would be right to lock the device down completely in that circumstance, particularly if the access code is being typed in correctly every time.
    Thanks

  • Best setup for iMac with SSD & HDD? Best location of scratch & home folders

Best setup for iMac with SSD and HDD? Best location of scratch & home folders?
    Computer:
iMac 2.93 GHz Quad core i7, 8GB RAM, 1 TB HDD + 256 GB SSD
There is not much info from Apple about the best way to set up an iMac with a Hard Drive and Solid state drive. I’ve looked at a few of the forum posts across the web and came up with a plan and lots of questions. (I do use photoshop frequently, but not on a professional level):
    1. I will keep OS and Applications on SSD
    2. About moving the home folder: I saw some posts about moving the whole home folder, but it makes more sense to me to only move selected fodlers withing the home folder tomake the best use of the SSD. So will keep the home folder on SSD, but move certain folders (document /music/iphoto/download) to 1 TB HDD via instructions I found on the macintoshperformanceguide website:
    cd
    sudo cp -r Documents /Volumes/Master
    sudo rm -rf Documents
    sudo ln -s /Volumes/Master/Documents Documents
    3. I would like to get 8 more RAM when I can afford it
    4. I will attach an external hard drive for most of my documents and backup storage
    5. Now here is where I’m not sure what’s best:
    a. Should I partition my internal 1 TB hard drive and use the first partition as a scratch disc for photoshop and other applications? How much should I partition? Is there any benefit to this if the rive is partitioned?
    b. Should I use an external drive as a scratch disc?
    c. Any advice on a good 1-2 TB external drive?
    d. Should I just leave things in factory settings?
Don't assume I know the basics - I got all the above just by searching around. Any advice and commentary is appreciatedThanks.

Thanks for the advice and the links. yes, I would like to speed up ps as much as possible.
I wonder if putting the scratch disc on the same drive as the OS would cause them to interfere with each other? Even if they are on different partitions, they would not be able to be accessed at the same time, or could they? That's why I was wondering if I should place scratch disc on the internal HDD -- but then I don't know how much to partition for it (or to partition at all?)
ALso, I read on a few places that too much read/write on the SSD wears it down over time? Is this more of a theoretical concerns - it does not make sense to me since it has no moving parts!
thanks again for the advice ... I'm gonna go digest those links

  • Work flow? How to link multi-cam sequences for DVD output?

    Pr cs4 (very new)
Still taking baby steps each day... please take my hand and help me!
Final output will be 2 DVD's (each DL) each about 2 hrs. Content are chamber music student groups in two recitals.
I have assets from two camera angles. I have successfully practiced on one of the groups performance (10 min.) following the steps illustrated in a multi-cam tutorial.  http://www.adobe.com/designcenter/video_workshop/?id=vid0234
This leaves me with a great multi-cam sequence for that group located in the Project Panel, exactly what I want.
Now, I want to know what is the best method (workflow?) to ultimately produce a DVD containing about 10 of these type performances (one after the other) with chapter markings for each group, titles etc.?
I have yet to use Encore and I'm guessing that is where I'll send the finished edit for DVD production, though I don't know at what step I jump there?
Do I try to create one very long multi cam sequence of all the content, then send to Encore? Or can I create seperate multi-cam sequences (each performance) then link them together, adding transitions and make the DVD? This would be my preference to keep things more manageable, especially with audio synching.
With my practice multi-cam sequence on the timeline, I tried to drag the same sequence from the Project Panel to the end of the timeline to simulate how this would work, but it does not add to the timeline as a clip would.
This is probably childs play for you pro's, but we were all baby's at one time...I just happen to still be one!
Thanks for your patience and advice,
    Kenny

Yes I did...now toss me a cookie please.
I am trying to quickly get up to speed in Pr CS4 to get this project completed. In the process, I'm trying to learn and understand the interface and correct terminology so as to make my questions intelligible to a community that posses vastly greater understanding than myself.
Is there anyone who can help with my main question at hand? Namely, how to go about creating a full length sequence (in the timeline) made via the nesting of synchronized multi-camera clips within a new "multi-cam sequence"?
As I said, I have completed a small test sequence in this fashion, nesting clips in a new sequence then using multi-cam monitor to record cuts. Now I need to add about 10 more of these together in a completed sequence to then send to DVD production.
    Is this intelligible?
    Thanks, Kenny

Hi, I am running statistical setup for 2LIS_11_VAITM. It ran for 10 hours and failed with an ABAP run time error. The error is "no storage space available for extending an internal table". For 11 application, the selection options is sales org, company code and sales document. We have tried twice, and already drilled down to the level of sales org and company code, but still with error.
The only option is sales documents.
The volume of the data is 16 million records around in VBAP table which needs to be in the setup table.
What is the criteria to categorize the sales document.
Can we use order types? We have 200 values in the order types. And I am not sure the document ranges in each order type is clearly defined and not overlapping each other, so that we could load those in the setup table.
Please advise!! Or if you have other suggestions!

It could be because of main memory problem... so Restrict your selections and do the statistical setup
