I agree with Klaus. What is your objection to tapes? They are small, easy to store and are a way to save your raw footage as well as your edited movies which you can export back to your camcorder (This is not possible with iMovie 08 however). Hard drive space on the camcorder will quickly fill up and then you have to start deleting your movies. Hard drives can fail, and you can lose your movies.
Right now, it is not possible to burn a DVD in HD, so your footage will only look as good as whatever device you are using to play it. That will certainly change in a couple of years, and with tapes, you will have an HD, edited movie ready to burn to HD-DVD.
Although you can get camcorder hard drive footage into iMovie 8, you cannot do it easily with iMovie 6, probably will lose some quality in the process. I would be skeptical of salespeople who give you incorrect information. Is this JVC the Everio? If so, you might want to take a look at these:

It looks as though the camorder works with iM08, but not so easily as you would expect.

  • IVI Sharded Components non compatible avec 64-BIT Windows XP?

    Bonjour,

  • How do i get video from my sony hx100 digital camera to my mac? after connecting the camera via the supplied usb cable, iMovie shows icons for 5 videos, but none will load.

i've connected the camera to the mac using the supplied usb cable. imovie shows 5 icons for videos but all of them have the red circle with slash through them and the box to import them is grayed out.

Get a nice Sony miniDV camcorder. It is not too expensive; it is small and easy to carry around to shoot your video. Most importantly, it will be instantly compatible with iMovie. You don't have to install any software, just connect it via FireWire (Sony calls this iLink) and you are good to go!
I have had several Sonys and love them. You don't need one with fancy editing capabilities because you will edit your movies in iMovie. Just be sure that it has AV In and Out so you can import and export back to the camcorder.
My current version is the small DCR HC-26. There are newer versions of that HC-30something and 40something. Look at the specs on Sony's website
Some of them require the use of a dock to import and export. I am not really fond of that feature. I like just connecting directly to the camera.

  • Does anyone know if the Sony hx50V camera is compatible with iMovie?

Since I've had my iMac it has been hard finding a digital camera that has what I want and is compatible with my iMac.  I take lots of pictures and videos, especially at concerts and I have been through quite a few cameras and have not been satisfied with the results.  I have bought Panasonic brands and Canon because they were compatible with iMovie, but the pics and videos have been very disappointing.  For me it seems Sony cameras are the best but from past experience, some don't work with iMovie.  There is a new one that I would love to purchase, the Cybershot HX-50V.  It has great reviews and everything I am looking for in a camera.  But it doesn't specify if it will open the videos in iMovie.  If anyone has this camera, please let me know what you think of it and if it is compatible.  Or maybe some other suggestions.  I'm looking for a camera that is small and compact that has high zoom and good in low light.  Thanks for your help, I really appreciate it!

The Cybershot HX50V uses SD or SDHC cards as well as Sony's proprietary cards, the MS duo. If using SD, you can remove the card from the camera and put it in the SD card slot in your iMac.
The card will appear as a drive on your desktop (assuming you have Finder preferences set to show external disks on desktop).  You should then be able to import the files directly into iMovie.
    Here is some further info:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ph2153
Before filming something important, experiment with file type settings to ensure your camera is recording in a format that iMovie will recognise.
A general point about filming concerts (aside from the obvious ones about getting permission and ensuring copyright is not breached) - getting decent images (still or video) is difficult even with a really good camera. Lighting tends to be low so you end up having to use slow shutter speeds which means camera shake is a big problem - a good tripod (and a solid place to stand it) is essential.  Getting close enough to film is also a problem.  I have used a Canon SLR with top quality lenses (L series) wide angle and telephoto and with apertures up to f2 and still struggled to get images I am happy with. My photos tend to be of Brass Bands and these are comparatively well lit (when compared with rock concerts and the like).

  • I just discovered my videos from my Canon digital camera are not compatible with imovie or idvd so I need new software. Any ideas?

Hi. I just discovered my videos from my Canon digital camera are not compatible with imovie or idvd (I'm very disappointed about that.) The photos are stored in my iphoto and I can burn a dvd using idvd but there is no audio So.... I need new software. I have a Mac OS X 10.5.8 and my digital still camera is the Canon Cybershot These are home movies of my kids and the viedeos are precious. Thanks in advance!

    Canon Cybershot
I can't trace a camera of that name. All that comes up is either the Sony Cybershot or the Canon Powershot!
Please confirm excactly what camera you have, and what version of iMovie.

  • I can no longer get my MacBook to recognize the same camera (Sony DCR-SR68) I've been doing this with for the last year.  I just upgraded to OSX 10.8.1 - did I make a mistake to upgrade my software ????!!!!

I am trying not lose my mind - and I won't even go into the Paralells issues.
My Grandmother just had a stroke, and I just want to get the video from some of this summer's parties with her.
Same MacBook,  Same Sony DCR-SR68 Handycam,  Same IMovie
The only difference is the 'new'  'upgrade'd software.  The time I could be spending with my family, I am just drowning in all my computer issues
that I never had before this upgrade.
    Help !

After plugging in your camcorder, I would run Software update just one more time.
I would also try to see if the app "Image Capture" doesn't see your camcorder. This is found in your applications folder but you can get to it easily by hitting command and space bar to bring up spotlight and then typing "Image Capture".
the current version of iMovie is 9.0.7
you could try creating a new user and seeing if the camera doesn't connect from there.
if it doesn't then you might need to find a friend with a compatible OS until Sony decides to update it's support for OSX.
I looked on their site but it doesn't seem like they've ever supported it with your model.
you might also want to send feedback to apple as to your experience, although their support is limited to their own hardware, so calling Sony might be a better idea...

  • Why is a video clip from iphoto not compatible with imovie?

i have a video clip in iphoto and when i try to add it by dragging it into the videos in imovie, it says "the file will not be imported. it is not compatible with imovie". this video clip was taken with my friend's point and shoot type camera, then put on her computer, then put on a flash drive, then put on my computer. thank you so much for any help!

    Welcome to iMovie Discussions.
Some "..point and shoot.." cameras create movies in an iMovie-compatible ".mov" format, but others create .avi files, or they record in the MPEG-1 format which iMovie can't unscramble.
Not all point and shoot movies are compatible with iMovie, even if they play using Apple's QuickTime movie player which iPhoto relies on.
These non-compatible movies need to be converted to .mov format, or some other compatible format such as DV or AIC, before trying to import them into iMovie. If you have QuickTime Pro, you can just open the movie clips and then use 'Export' to save them in the .mov format.
..More details from me - or others - later; I'm dashing out right now for a bite to eat..

  • Panasonic HC V720 compatible with iMovie

Can someone let me know if the Panasonic HC V720 camcorder is compatible with the latest version of iMovie.

If you are using iMovie with the lates version '11, you can know the answer from the site "http://help.apple.com/imovie/cameras/en/index.html"
You will find Panasonic HC-V720 (Both PAL nad NTSC) is compatible with iMovie 11. But you should notice that iMovie does not support footage recorded in 1080-50p/60p from this Camcorder. You'd better avoid shooting videos in the formats.
If you have got some these videos and wanna editing them for sharing, you can use FCP X, Adobe, Sony Vegas, ect NLE's to work with1080-50p/60p recordings, or you can convert MTS to iMovie's native format (AIC) before importing to iMovie.

  • My iMac doesn't recognise my camera Sony DCR-PC330E

    Hello,
PC user for years, I decided 3 weeks ago to buy an Imac 27" on AppleStore (Mac OS X 10.6.7)
    I've got a camera Sony DCR-PC330E.
I've bought this cable in order to connect my cam on the FireWire port of the iMac.
When I connect the cam with it, nothing happens The presence of the cam is not detect, whereas ther is no problem on my PC.
Does my camera not compatible with Mac ?
    Should I installed a specific driver ?
Thanks by advance for the attention you accord to this post.
    CedriKo
PS: I sorry for my bad english.

Hi, I have been reading briefly the instruction manual for your camera online.
It would seem that for connection to an iMac you should use a USB cable and not Firewire.  The USB cable was supplied with the camera.
I also get the impression that you should have with the camera a CD which has software that you need to install on your iMac.
May I suggest that you get hold of your camera's instruction manual and read the instructions, I think that you should be able to solve this yourself then!
    Good luck

  • How to put on the files of the camera Sony Avchd hdr-td10 for Final Cut Pro 6.0.6?

Sorry for my English, I am French. I would like to know if the camera Sony Avchd hdr-td10 is compatible with Final Cut Pro 6.0.6 to List and Transferer and if it is necessary to install a particular codec? This camera makes of the 3D but I specify that my rushes are in 2D. Thank you in advance.

Read this. (Also available in French from the "Aide" menu bar item)
If the files are not recognized because Sony made some changes to the AVCHD format, MPEG Streamclip (free) might be able to help. Clipwrap ($50) will definitely work.

  • Nokia N70 connected in non compatible mode

First here are some facts: Im Using Pc Suite v6.83 on Windows XPsp2. Im using USB cable to connect to my N70.
Now here's the problem: The first time I used PC Suite after Installation, it worked fine. When I used it again the second time, it acted strangely. It didn't detect my phone correctly. It detected the N70 alright, but a baloon popped up from the PC suite Icon on the system tray saying "nokia n70 connected in non compatible mode". Then when I went to the Get Connected wizard, a warning popped up which says "Your phone is in file transfer mode and connot be used with PC suite. quit file transfer mode from the phone if you want to use PC suite". I wonder how could this be since I know that the N70 has no file transfer mode.
Then after finally having my phone detected correctly after diconnecting then connecting the USb cable, my system detected the phone as a digital camera imaging device and as a mass storage device, showing up in windows explorer aside from showing up in the Nokia Phone browser. I Don't think this is a normal bahaviour.
Then the third time I tried to use PC suite, it detected the phone as bing in in non compatible mode again. Yhis time disconnecting and reconnecting the USb cable didn't help.
I found some strange things in the windows device manager too. I found out that under portable device, the N70 was there but disabled and labled as not properly working.
Have you guys encounterd this prblem before? If you did maybe you can help me resolve it. Thanks in advance!

  • 6110navigator PCSuite "non-compatible mode"

    Nokia 6110 Navigator
    Microsoft Windows XP
    Build 2600
    Service Pack 2
    Nokia PC Suite 6.84.10.3
    Connectivity Cable Drivers 6.84.4.0
    PC Connectivity Solution 7.22.7.1
    Microsoft Bluetooth-stack 5.1.2600 Build 2180
Trying to update Route 66 with the DVD that came in the package; didn't work.
I got this far with this problem:
When i connect the phone to the PC (USB DKE2) after setting the USB-mode to datatransfer (menu / settings / connectivity / usb) the PS Suite icon in the systemtray reports "non-compatible mode" or something like that. Leaving the phone physically connected and switching USBmode to PCSuite, then PCSuite works OK. But I can't get connected in data transfer mode.
    Anyone?

check the pc suite version you have. The latest is 7.1 and new phones wouldnt be supported by older versions of pc suite like 6.84.If you're using older version it will give such message.

  • Nokia 6230 non-compatible mode?

Please help! when i connect my phone to pc it says 'connected in non-compatible mode' change to 'phone UI' What does that mean????

I have had Nokia phones for a while now, but transferring data between a Nokia phone via a computer and another Nokia phone is one of the most frustrating things there is in life!!
I only wanted to transfer my contacts from a N95 phone on O2 to a 6700 classic on T-mobile, should not be that difficult right?!
    WRONG!!!
I take the sim card out of my old phone (N95) and put into my new one (6700) and it asks for a Restriction code, which I don't have and neither does T-mobile or Nokia!
I try connecting the N95 to my pc via usb on pc suite and data transfer and the computer recognises it but the Nokia pc suite does not, saying phone not connected and that it is in the incompatible mode ui!
I even downloaded the latest updated software for the N95 which took a while, and still no joy!
This is about the third time in 3 years this has happened that I can't transfer my contacts, but by using the windows software to open devices I did manage to transfer my contacts to the pc, but you can only then re-transfer them to the memory card where you can't then transfer them to the contacts file or sim card memory!
And even then in the memory card you can't open the individual contacts because the file format is not supported, vcf!!!
And yet amazing I managed to transfer my photos to the pc via lifeblog as easy as that!!!
It is incredible in this day and age that it is so difficult to transfer data from 1 phone to another which are the same make and using the correct Nokia software, and yes the Nokia website does have cheesey photos with really useless step by steps, that only state the obvious and do not really tell you anything that you don't know already!!!
And while I am here I must say that the N95 is a poor phone, very slow to start up, very slow to use, battery only lasts about 8 hours, terrible camera which struggles to focus on 2 different objects less that about a foot apart, i.e. it cannot differentiate and would only focus on the front object (and I am a serious photographer). The back cover is to weak and broke very easily and has had to be held on with tape! The signal has been terrible up and down like a yo yo, and it was not all O2's fault I have to hold the phone in a certain way for a while to try and gain a signal which makes me look like some kind weirdo!!
I'm going to get T-mobile to transfer the contacts for me on their non pc bit of kit now, otherwise I will be sitting there all day entering in each contact individually!!
Come on Nokia you really need to sort this very simple and yet very important issue out, please.......!!
Right i've had my last rant for the year, have a happy new year everyone, and good luck.
