Cameras and infrared

I had recently purchased a new fujifilm camera that says its capable of transfering pictures via infrared on all forms of infrared. question is does the imac have this capability? I know it has a reader in the computer and it says its good for the front row remote but can it be used for this application? any help would be appreciated. thanks

As far as I know, the infrared capability of the Intel-based iMac is only for the remote.

  • Ability of DSLR cameras to cut down UV and infrared light

Is it a fact that most digital cameras can cut down ultraviolet and infrared parts of the electromagnetic radiation on their own and therefore do not require separate filters for that purpose? If so, even an entry level DSLR, like my Canon EOS 1100D, is so capable?

Yes, this is true.  In fact... more than you might guess.
In the days of film (I speak as if it's ancient history but that's how many of us here grew up shooting) the sensitivity of the film to various parts of the spectrum dependended entirely on the film itself.  If you wanted to shoot infra-red, you loaded the camera with infra-red film.  Non infra-red film was not particularly sesntivie to infra-red light.
Many films were mildly sensitive to UV light and the real point of the UV filter (which I think might surprise most people) is that whenever you pass light through a "lens", the lens has a "dispersion" effect which bends different wavelengths of light by a different amount.  Compensating elements are used in the lens to attempt to correct for this and better lenses are judged substantially by how well they handle this.  But it turns out human eyes are not sensitive to either UV (nor IR).  Since UV is on the short end of the spectrum, it's light bends more than any other wavelength and would thus need the most correction.  If left uncorrected, this might cause an image to appear slightly "soft" because the UV wavelength does not want to focus at precisely the same focus distance.  Rather than "correct" the UV wavelength, it's much easier to just eliminate it entirely by using a filter -- problem solved.
Back to the era of digital...
Digital cameras are senstiive to both UV and IR and much moreso than film.  Effectively _every_ digital camera needs to filter these wavelengths out.  But more than this... human eyes are not actually 'equally" sensitive to all colors of light.  We are far more sensitive to the wavelengths in the middle of the visible spectrum and not nearly as sensitive to the wavelengths nearing the sides of the visible spectrum.  You are, in effect, VASTLY more sensitive to "greens" and much less sensitive to either red or blue.  So while you see the world with reds, greens, and blues... the real world has significantly more red and blue than you are able to see.  Cameras would see these more or less equally and this would result in images which appear to be saturated with red and blue.
To fix this, the camera does a few things...
First... the sensor is coated with "photosites" under a mask of red, green, and blue micro "filters".  The array is usually referred to as a "Bayer Mask" (there are other types but this is the most common.)  The mask has twice as many "green" sensitive sites as it does red or blue sites.
Second... the camera has both UV and IR filters inside and these are located immediately in front of the sensor (but behind the shutter).  If you remove the lens, open the shutter, and look in side, then what you actually are looking at is a couple of layers of filters (which appear mostly clear to you) and then the sensor itself is behind them all.
Third... the UV and IR filters have a gradual cut-off curve.  The IR wavelength begins at 700nm (and longer)  Anything "shorter" than 700 is considered 'visible' light.    The visible spectrum runs from roughly 400nm through 700nm.  But it's not as if the filter allows 0% of wavelengths shorter than 400nm to pass and 0% of the wavelengths longer than 700nm to pass and yet 100% of the stuff between 400 and 700nm through.  What it _really_ does is a gradual ramp.
The filter begins cutting IR light starting while it's still in the 500nm range -- it's already being filtered in the 600nm range.  By the time we get to the 656nm wavelength (which happens to be a fire-engine red color -- that's the "Hydrogen alpha emission line" the filter is already cutting nearly 75% of the "red" light (and this is still considered "visible" light spectrum territory).    By the time it gets to the 700nm wavelength it's cutting nearly all of it.
This may sound surprising or undesireable but actually... it more mirrors the sensitive amounts of your own eyes.  Your eyes are less sensitive to those wavelengths so the camera is deliberately de-tuned to be less sensitive to those areas as well and in doing this, you end up with a photograph which more closely approximatelys the color proportions that your eyes are used to seeing.
There are  people who modify their cameras so they can be used for IR photography and astrophotographers love to modify them for astrophotography purposes (the Canon 60Da is a special edition of the 60D which is pre-modified by Canon to be more sensitive to the wavelengths needed in astrophotography which benefits greatly if sensitive to the Ha (Hydrogen alpha) wavelength (656.28nm) is improved.)
Thats probably more than you wanted to know about the filters... but there you have it!
There is no "need" to use a UV (nor IR) filter on any of your lenses.  Some people use them as a form of "protection" (to avoid getting dirt directly on the front element of the lens).  There is a downside to useing them in that they often will create optical reflections in your image ... with "ghosting" or "flaring" that would not be visible had no filter been on the lens.

  • Is there a way to switch off by default the video on FaceTime? I only ever use this app for audio/calls and hate the video being on. I especially hate that if I leave the app open to receive calls it means the camera and green light are on.

My issue is that I can't find a way to have the camera switched off when the app is open and so this means if I want the app open all day to receive calls then the camera is going to be on the whole time. Even if it didn't potentially drain the battery, or add to the CPU usage or whatever else may cause any problems whatsoever (wheel of death!), I just don't want the camera on as I don't see myself ever wanting to use the video call feature but I would use the audio/call multiple times throughout the day to make and receive calls. The camera being on when the app is open is enough to prevent me from using the app. Also ever since seeing that episode of criminal minds where if you saw the green light on above the screen then it meant the killer was watching you!
Basically I just can't believe there isn't a way to disable the camera whilst having the app running. I know when initiating an audio call the camera goes away, but I would like the camera away the whole time. To me it just would make sense that if you click the video option then the camera is on, and if you click the audio option then the camera goes off. It just seems waaaaay to basic a thought for apple to have missed... Let's face it, we're not all as pretty as the people in the apple adverts and don't want to see our ugly mugs staring back as us when we work all day at our macs!

I have exactly the same concern. It seems it would be a simple fix for Apple to allow users to turn off the camera (and even the mic) while keeping FaceTime open -- especially now that it turns out FaceTime must remain open in order to send and receive iPhone calls on a Mac.
I like to think this new functionality of FaceTime will be baked into a future release of Yosemite, as the current setup has that not-quite-finished feel of a work in progress. In the meantime, there's nothing like a little piece of Post-It stuck over the camera to keep the NSA from watching your face as you type a post to the Apple Support Communities.

    Hi there bananas321,
You may want to try force closing all open apps and resetting the device as an initial troubleshooting step. Take a look at the articles below for more information.

  • Can't access photos in camera roll - camera and  photo app crashes

Have iphone 4 with iOS 5.0. Took pictures but now I can't access any photo in the Camera Roll. When I now try to take a picture, Camera app crashes. If I try to access the Camera Roll via Photo App, it too crashes. Can't see the photos from iTunes either. Shows it as unknown data. Is there anyway to rebuild the photo library or remove a corrupted photo since I think that is the problem. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks to Steve Kehlet who posted the solution that helped me and saved my day, https://discussions.apple.com/message/16405821#16405821

  • Camera and ipod shuffle do not show up on desk top when connected

Kodak camera and ipod shuffle do not show up on desk top when connected.  Trying to download pictures and adding my music to ipod shuffle, Anyone have any suggestions.

Have you plugged in another USB device to ensure that the USB ports are working?
Suggest you buy (about $10 - $20) a USB memory card reader. Just plug your camera's memory card into it & copy the pic files to your Mac. Quicker & easier than interfacing the camera for pic transfer.

Lightroom doesn't use the Camera Raw plug-in. All of the Camera Raw technology is part of the Lightroom program. You will either have to upgrade to Lightroom 5 or use the DNG converter to create digital negative copies that can be used with Lightroom 4.

I have no idea what you did or what happened - but I can assure you that loading from a different camera does not create a new library
So you need to supply information and someone here will assist you in sorting this out and figuring out what you really did
What version of iPhoto do you have? What version of the OS? Why do you think that a second library has been created? What do you see when you launch iPhoto with the optipon kep depressed and use the select library option? Where is your iPhoto library normally?

  • Problem with Photos and Camera and Sizing Set

I have a 3gs and upgraded to 4.0. Things seemed fine but yesterday when I opened up the Camera Roll in Photos there was 1 picture showing and a large black rectangular box. No other photos were showing. I tapped on the black box and it showed all the photos using the slider to go from 1 to the next. I couldn't figure out how to get rid of the black box so that all the photos showed up normally, so I deleted each of the photos. The size of the box shrank as each photo was deleted. Then when I went into Photos, it opened with an empty screen and immediately closed. I then tried to use the Camera and it started up and immediately closed. So I sent myself an email with a photo and saved it to Photos. Its there and so is the black box! Now the camera will work! To further complicate, I decided I'd use the photo for wallpaper. Problem is I can't size it!! I can move it and size it with my fingers, but then when I release, it immediately pops back to full size and I can't "Set" the image size. Does anyone have any idea what's going on!!

Well I solved it. I uploaded my photos to My Gallery. Then I took a photo with the camera and saved it. I then deleted all the other photos except the one I just took. Then I exited Photos and then came back in and it was working fine, so I then downloaded the photos that I had just uploaded to My Gallery. Still have a problem though with sizing the photos for the Lock and Home screens. I can't get the Set button to hold a size. Any ideas on that?

  • Camera and led light not working after IOS 7 update on iphone 5 help please!!

After I installed the update my led light won't work for the flashlight and my camera doesn't work either. Only the front facing camera works. Any suggestions?

thanks for the suggestions, i tried the ideas you suggested but i dont even get a camera showing for the rear camera, i also noticed the torchlight no longer works.  i did all the steps but no luck.
So I took my camera to the genius bar this weekend as well as walking through various steps with the apple guys in ohio support over the net.
With the guys at the genius bar, after i insisted that it must be software as the rear camera stopped working only after the softwre update, they continued to assure me it was hardware and talked me into letting them replace the camera,  they then took it to the back and tried fixing a camera and 30 minutes later came out and said the rear camera is no longer being detected and wanted me to replace the motherboard for yet more money.  im glad they didnt charge me for the new camera though as it still didnt work.
anyway the motherboard idea i rejected as it was just 2 months out of warranty and had only stopped working the day after the release of 7.0.2, so im going to wait until the next few releases to see what happens, as i dont believe for a second its hardware.  i expected a stock answer from apple and its exactly what i got even after my explanation of how it was working the day before the release.  not overly impressed with the whole process.
i wanted to back down to 7.0.1 to confirm the camera still works but they said no chance so i cant even see if it still works ouside 7.0.2.  anyway will update if i get any further progress.

  • Using a devices camera and adding the image to the display list

    Hi,
My students and I have not been able to make an AIR app that can take a picture using the devices camera and then add the image to the display list. We are able to open the devices camera and of course take a picture, but that's it.

    Hi,
Do I have to add the picture to the cameraroll in order to add it to the AIR apps display list?
Both examples from Adobe claim that their examples work. Do they not?
In the example, the event handler asyncImageLoaded is never called. The output text field shows -   result_txt.text = "Asynchronous media promise."; So the Event.COMPLETE is being added. But I don't think it's being dispatched.
    Any ideas?
