Can 10.4 included with my new computer be installed on my old?
Hi, I just bought a new iMac 20" about a week ago. Along with that, I have my Powerbook 12" which I owned previous to this purchase. I have installation disks with my new iMac and want to know if I can install the OS on my Powerbook so they're both on the same OS.
I ask this b/c I think I remember there being something said about OS disks now being specific to the machine you bought (i.e. Macbook OS disks only work for Macbooks, etc), unless you buy a full retail version . Is this the case? My current disks don't say anything to that affect and I'm hoping that's not the case. It'd be a shame to buy a whole new computer and not be able to install the OS on my old one...and be forced to shell out another $129 just so they're running the same OS. Can anyone confirm if I can do this without any issues? Thanks.
Hi Cory Smith1;
Besides the fact that this would be illegal, it also will not work because the install media for the iMac is specific to it and will not work on the PowerBook. The iMac is probably Intel based and the PowerBook is PPC based so the code is totally incompatible.
My suggestion would be to wait until later this month and buy the family pack for Leopard. This will work on both systems and it will be legal. Then both system would be running the latest operating system from Apple.

Does anyone know how I can sync my iphone with a new computer?
I have a new computer (PC), itunes is downloaded. I have spent most of the day using both an external hard drive and my iphone to transfer the apps, music, videos etc onto my new computer, which worked without an issue.
I have deauthorised the old computer and authorised the new one with my apple ID.
However, when I try to sync my phone to the new computer it wont update anything on my iphone (i.e. photos that are on the computer wont transfer over etc, even though I have selected that file to sync). It is starting the sync but then comes up on the progress bar saying "cancelling sync".
Any ideas, I'm slowly going mad! This will define syncing http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1296. The advantage is it allows you to backup the phone, you can sync music onto the phone, as well as contacts and calendars.

Hi jim or viola,
If you are having issues tranfering your content from your old iPhone to your new iPhone, you may find the following article helpful:
Apple Support: Transfer content from an iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch to a new device

As for iTunes, you may need to download it manually to your new computer first. You can find the most recent version at the following page:

Someone please help!!
I had an old crap laptop that wasn't apple and I used that for the past 2 years to sync my iPod but I have got rid of that and now I have an iMac. I have forgotton the 4 number digit passcode to my ipod and I have tried about 25 different combinations and I still cant get it right, so I just came to the conclusion that I have to reset the whole thing. I couldn't do it on my old laptop because it would keep running out of memory and I cant get it to connect to my new pc.
Can someone please guide me through on how to connect it up to something to reset it. ThanksRead the article you linked

Re-establish synchronization with a new computer/i-tunes
How can I reestablish synchronization with a new computer and new i-tunes version after my old computer crashed? My new computer and i-tunes recognizes my i-touch but thinks it is synchronized with another i-tunes version. And it is technically correct but the other version is no longer accessible because that computer is dead and gone. It will allow me to resynchronize but only by wiping the content of the i-touch and replacing it with the "blank" i-tunes content on the new computer. I would rather not lose the contents of my i-touch.
If your iPod is set to sync automatically you need to take care connecting to an empty iTunes. You can use a keyboard command to prevent your iPod auto-syncing with iTunes. While connecting the iPod to the computer on Windows with iTunes installed hold down the Shift + Ctrl keys together. This will stop the iPod from auto-syncing with iTunes and the iPod will appear in the source list. Wait until you are sure the iPod has mounted, and that it will not auto sync and then you can let the keys go. This may take between 20 to 30 seconds depending on your computer: iTunes - Keyboard Shortcuts for Windows
Alternatively open iTunes first and go to Edit>Preferences>Devices and check the box "Disable automatic syncing for iPhones and iPods" and choose Ok. Then connect your iPod.
If at any point you get a message that your iPod is linked to another library and asking if you want to link to this one and replace all your songs etc, press "Cancel". Pressing "Erase and Sync" will irretrievably remove all the songs from your iPod.

For everything else (music from CDs, other downloads and including iTunes purchases) there are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve the music files and playlists from your iPod Touch or iPhone. You'll find that they have varying degrees of functionality and some will transfer data (such as playcounts and ratings), movies, videos, photos, podcasts and games as well.

I have an ipod touch which I have USB synced in the past on my Windows Vista laptop.
Now I want to stop USB Syncing with the laptop and USB start syncing instead with my Windows 7 Desktop machine instead.
Both PCs have the latest version of itunes running and I have transferred all purchases from the ipod to the Windows 7 desktop machine.
Home sharing is turned on on both PCs, so now their libraries appear identical.
The ipod has the latest IOS installed, and I have set up automatic icloud back ups for the ipod.
If i USB sync the ipod with the windows 7 desktop PC it warns me that all data will be erased, and replaced with data from that computer. I know that this will mean that all game progress is lost since it is not included in a USB sync backup and virgin copies of all the apps will be loaded onto the ipod.
My Question is this;
What is the best way to keep the app data intact on the ipod?
Do I simply carry out a USB sync with the Windows 7 desktop PC, let it wipe all the game save info away, and then resore an icloud backup onto the ipod?
Will this result in me being able to sync with the Windows 7 desktop PC and keep my game save data intact?
ThanksTwo ways.
- You can sync with the new computer by following these instructions
Sync Your iOS Device with a New Computer Without Losing Data - How-To Geek
All the apps have to be in the iTunes library so the app data will have a place to go.
- Or just restore from iCloud backup. That will also pull down the apps from iCloud. Your apps data will also be restored. -
Can't get my Music off of my iPhone 4...
My computer died & had to get a new one, so now I cannot sync my iPhone 4 with the new computer, without losing all of my Music, because the only Music I have is on the iPhone 4 only, not on the computer. No Backup anywhere : (
If I choose to sync it tells me all of the Content that does not match the iTunes library on the computer will be erased, do you want to proceed & I have to say no.
How do I replace the music library on my Computer with the Music on the iPhone?
I got my pictures off because you can access them when you connect the iPhone using Windows 7 but you cannot see any of the music so you cannot access it when using windows so don't know what to do...
Help...The music sync is one way - computer to iphone. The only exception is itunes purchases. File>Transfer Purchases
It has always been very basic to always maintain a backup copy of your computer for just such an occasion. Use your backup copy to move everything to your new computer. -
How do I get the sync of my 3GS on my computer to transfer everything (files, apps, etc.) to my new iphone4? And then how do I move the sync to a newer computer so I can sync the new phone with the new computer?
My 3GS is dying and it's synced to an older computer. I have tons of datafiles as well as apps, music, text messages, etc. that I need to get moved to the new iphone4 I'm getting. Then I need to move the sync to a newer computer so that I can sync the new phone and new computer.
I understand how to get my apps to transfer to a new pc. That's not the issue. It's getting ALL the data from the 3GS to the 4 and then to a new computer.
Thanks. Thanks much, that's very helpful for step one (getting old phone onto new phone). Very clear.
However, I still have the problem of moving to the new computer. How do I move the sync to the new computer after the new phone is set up? -
I have forgotten my appleID password and the email it is linked to is deactivated, security questions aren't working. This is on my iPhone and iTunes acs so I can't sync with my new computer. How do I merge AppleID accounts and shut down the old one (when I have no password and the security questions aren't working?)
You cannot merge Apple ID accounts, that has never been supported.
You can contact the Apple ID Security folks per the listing in http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5699 and they can help reset security questions and get the account working. -

I no longer have access to the computer to which my iPod touch is synced. Can I de-sync it without accessing said computer and set up a sync with my new computer without losing all my purchases?
You can transfer Itunes purchases by:

You can transfer other stuff with the info provided in this previous discussion:
Best iPod to PC
You can also redownload apps at no additional cost:

Once you get the stuff in the iTunes library of you new computer let iTunes erase your iPod and replace its contents with what is now in your iTunes library. -
Our Windows PC crashed with all our music on it. There are copies of both purchased (thru iTunes store) and from our own CDs on an external HD in a backup file. They are not linked to a Media file. Is there any way I can put this music on my new computer?

As for you own music, you may have to use a third party software. A good Free one is called Sharepod which you can download from Download.com here:

Using Time Machine, or any other such program, to transfer Adobe software from one machine to another works probably less than five percent of the time. Uninstall from your new machine. Run the cleaner tool (do a search for Cleaner Tool on this site if you don't know what it is). Then reinstall properly from original media or downloads.
