Can 1st Gen MBP be upgraded to 3Gb?

Hi guys, Thanks if this has already been answered. I cannot find the answer. Can a 1st generation MBP (Core Duo) be upgraded to 3Gb? Sincerely, Rob

I originally thought it may be possible with a firmware upgrade, however I am fairly certain that the physical limitations of the processor do not allow for 3gb of ram. The other processor manages 3 gb because one stick is built into the motherboard. The 64 bit (esque) processor also helps.

I have a 1st gen iPad. Upgrade to IOS 6.1.1 appeared, but it quit shortly into the installing and has not come back up again. Both the iPad and when synced to the iMac, say i am fully up to date at 5.1.1! Has anyone had / got the same issue? How can I upgrade when it doesn't acknowledge there is no need?

  • 1st gen MBP won't connect to WiFi when WPA2-PSK [AES] security is enabled

    Hi all,
I've got a pretty vexing problem involving my old MacBook Pro and my WiFi, and I'm hoping to find an explanation or solution to it. Recently, my husband purchased a brand-spanking new (PC) laptop with n wireless capabilities, and I've been trying to reconfigure my home network so that the router is broadcasting in 2.4 gHz  b/g/n mode. When I set the router (a Netgear N600 dual band) to broadcast in "up to 300Mbps" mode, it tells me  that "WPA-PSK [TKIP] may only operate at "Up to 54Mbps" (legacy G) rate, not N rate. NETGEAR recommends that you use WPA2-PSK [AES] to get full N rate support."
So, naturally I go and set the security to WPA2, and my 1st gen MacBook Pro (it only has a CoreDuo, and hence, a b/g card) promptly proceeds to spazz out. Sometimes it sees the network, sometimes it doesn't. When it does see the network, the connection times out, and I can never successfully establish a connection. Right now, I've got the Wifi broadcasting up to 300Mbps, but the security is set to mixed WPA-PSK [TKIP] + WPA2-PSK [AES], so I'm not even sure if my husband is getting Wireless-N functionality on his end of things.
Has anyone else had a problem like this, and is there any solution for it? Should I upgrade my wireless card (Can I even upgrade my wireless card???), is it a software  issue, etc. I'm aware that there have been a number of issues with wireless connectivity in Mac laptops over the past few years, and I really hope this isn't one of them.
Thanks in advance for your help!

I believe the issue is the fact that the Netgear router supports wide-channel operation in the 2.4 GHz band. This is how they are able to advertize that you can get up to 300 Mbps. Apple computers/routers only support narrow-channels on this band.
What I would suggest is that if the Netgear has an option to both use narrow-channels and WPA2/AES security, to use this combination. Your Mac should be able to connect and his PC should get at least 120-130 Mbps. Note: Although not broadcasting at 300 Mbps, the Netgear will still be operating in the 802.11n radio mode.

  • HT5457 New app upgrades put 1st gen Ipad users out in the cold - Recently DirecTV and The Blaze both upgraded their ipad apps so that only ios 6 and above were compatible - anyone who has a 1st gen ipad cannot upgrade to ios 6  - what is up with this Appl

So 1st gen ipad users are basiclly left out in the cold unless they go out an buy a new IPad - of course DTV and The Blaze are blaming Apple and Apple is blaming them - what is the deal Apple -  I pay for my subscription to The Blaze in order to have it on my IPad and now I can't even use it - same with DTV - so is Apple now forcing people to buy upgraded devices thru their apps that will no longer support the older generations - what a joke this is and bad business.

Unfortunately software always moves faster than hardware.
Apple's not going to change things. You can try talking to those two app developers and have them make their older versions available.
Beyond that, if you wish to express yourself directly to Apple, http://www.apple.com/feedback/
This is just a user to user forum, so there's nothing anyone here can do for you I'm afraid.

  • Can't install iWork on 1st Gen MBP running 10.6.8

I have a 1st generation MacBook Pro running OS 10.6.8. I tried downloading iWork from the App Store and I'm given this message: Keynote can't be installed on New HD because Mac OS X version 10.7.4 or later is required. This seems odd given I had a previous version of iWork installed before having to completely reinstall the OS. Now that I have a newer OS and I wish to upgrade (and pay for) the newer version of iWork I can't. Any thoughts?

If you had a version of iWorks installed then YOU HAD a DVD of iWorks. So find that DVD and reinstall from that. Then you may be able to update it to the newest versions that will run on Snow Leopard from Software Update.

  • Need advice - 1st Gen MBP or 2nd Gen MB?

I have been considering crossing over from a PC to an Apple for a long time and have finally made the decision to go for it this year. I do not know a lot about Apple computers so I am hoping to find some solid advice here. I was at CompUSA today and they have a MacBook Pro (MA600LL - 1st generation) on sale for $1299. From what I have researched online this evening it looks like it has the following: 15 inch display, 2.0 GHz CoreDuo processor, 512 MB Ram, 80 GB hard drive, a 4X Superdrive (no DL write capability), and ATI XL1600 w/ 128 MB RAM for video.
The MacBook (MA700LL/A - 2nd generation) that I was looking at is also $1299 and has the following: 13.3 inch display, 2.0 Ghz Core2Duo processor, 1 GB Ram, 80 GB hard drive, a 6X Superdrive (with DL write capability), and 64MB shared video RAM.
I do plan on installing XP on it to play a few of the games that I would like to carry over, but I don't plan on playing a lot of new/intense 3D games on it. I do plan on working with music (writing and recording) and video editing - both in a limited fashion at this time, but possibly more often if I like the software as much as I have been told that I will like it. I will use it for web editing, web browsing, online chatting, photos, e-mail, word processing, and other general things like that on a regular basis.
Could someone please give me some advice as to which model would be a better long term purchase? As I mentioned before I am not very familiar with Apple computers or the OS, however I am very familiar with PC's. Thanks in advance!

You need to answer a few questions:
    1. Why a laptop? For the same $ you can get an iMac with better specs
    2. Will you be doing anything video intensive? If so, then you won't do well with MB shared video RAM.
    3. You will need to boost your RAM on MBP--how much will that add? The 1 GB on the MB should be adequate.
    4. What outputs are available and how will you use them?
Personally, I opted for the MBP because I need the bigger screen to work and I wanted the Expresscard/34 slot. If you can live with the smaller screen, don't need a video card and don't need an expresscard/34 slot, then the MB may offer more for the future as it will work better with Leopard when it is released (for $129).
In either case, get Applecare--Don't get any support from the store. In my experience it is much less efficient than applecare.

  • Does the mba 1st gen able to upgrade to 64 bit snow leopard or soon to realease Lion

Hey i have an original Mba and would like to know if i should or even can upgrade to 64bit Snow leopard or Lion.

    For Snow Leopard,
Mac computer with an Intel processor
    1GB of memory
    5GB of available disk space
    DVD drive for installation
Some features require a compatible Internet service provider; fees may apply.
Some features require Apple’s MobileMeservice; fees and terms apply.
For Lion, all I can find is it should work with a "x86-64 processor (Macs with an Intel Core 2 Duo or later CPU"), which i think includes the description for the original Air.
Time will tell to wait and see.

  • Macpro 1st Gen Graphics Card Upgrade

After reading through several pages of post's on here I am still at a stand still on upgrading my original macpro 2.66ghz quad core. The reason I am upgrading the stock card is I cant handle the grainy look on my photos after using my same moniter with my new macbook pro. Also I am going to be using my bootcamp vista side to play bluray and hd dvds. I recently purchased the new buffalo dual external drive but the images are blury and after a hd video test my graphics card failed misserably. Can someone point me in the right direction. I want to spend around 275-300 shipped. My lcd display supports hdmi and all recent standards.

Start by posting in the appropriate forum. This is the MaBook Pro forum, not the Mac Pro forum.
There is a limited number of video cards you can use, and all but one is sold through Apple only. Go to the Apple Store Online to find an appropriate card. Note that some models will not work in your computer. The only card not sold by Apple is the ATI HD 3870.
You can find various benchmarks by doing some searching at Google, Feedback, Storage Review.

  • 1st Gen MBP battery replacement

    Hi there,
I need to buy a replacement battery for my 1st generation MacBook Pro and I'm wondering where to get it. On the Apple Store they are £100 but on eBay they are all around £20. So eBay's looking like the better option but maybe they are rubbish Chinese knock offs?
Also is there any particular model to be looking for or will all of them fit a 15 inch MBP?
    Thanks,

The old saying 'you get what you pay for' applies here.  The prices you quote from eBay are too good to be true.  If you want to waste your money, buy the £20 battery.  Look on the Internet for trusted third party vendors or buy from Apple.  If you look at some of the prior posts, you will see many tales of woe.
    Ciao.

  • Can 1st gen AppleTV be used as a music source without a computer or intenet

I'd like to be able to use my apple tv as a music source at work and I originally thought I could use my iPhone to control it. I now realize it needs to be hooked into a wifi network. Can one connect the Apple TV to a router and set up a "hot spot" without being on the net and without a computer?

Yes you can. I'm using my first gen Apple TV as a music source in my home. You do need a wifi network to control it with your iPhone or iPad Remote app. It's better than the new Apple TV in that regard because you can play your music without having your computer up and running iTunes.

  • I recently upgrade to an iPAD Air. I gave my old iPAD (1st gen) to my wife.  I restored it to original factory conditions.  Now we cannot install iBook on it since it requires iOS 7.  What can we do with older iPADS that are still 100% functional.

Look at this similar problem in getting Netflix on an iPad 1. Same technique should work for you.

  • I have a 1st gen mac pro dual xeon nvidia geforce 7300, can i upgrade it?, I have a 1st gen mac pro dual xeon nvidia geforce 7300, can i upgrade it?

I have a Mac Pro 1st gen dual xeon 2Ghz with a Nvidia GE Force 7300 graphics card that i would like ti update to something newer and more performant. Can it be done?

mke52, is your MP an Intel machine? If so, you need to upgrade to Snow Leopard.
If not, 10.5.8 is the best you can do.
If you have Mactracker, it will give you all the upgrade combos for your model as sell as info on all Macs.
    Its pretty interesting (and free)

I am from Germany. I have a Question to the iPod nano 1st gen replacement program: Can I upgrade to Ipod touch 8GB? The new Ipod nano Generation is too smal for my hands

Hello! Not a problem, because you will get a Ipod Nano 1st generation as a replacement, not a new / latest generation.

  • 3gb ram on 1st gen 17" mbpro

So it seems that the new speed bump has introduced memory support > 2gb, which is about time.
Does anyone know if this is a firmware upgrade or can the 1st gen 17" mbpro handle it as well?
17" mac book pro   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

MBP on Core Duo can support up to 4gb (limited by 32bit CPU, however other components on logic board are ready for 64bit operations). That's theoretically. Physically supported amount of RAM might be (and it is) limited by BIOS (logic board firmware). Core 2 Duo MBP theoretically can support 1.099 terabytes of RAM (if it'd be a real 64bit, not 40bit as it is now it would support 18.5 million terabytes of RAM :)))). Physically it's again limited by firmware.
The only question that bothers me now is why 3GB??? Why not 4? Is it because one memory slot now soldered on the board with 1GB and you can chose 1 or 2GB on the other one?
The thing is, if you chose 3GB configuration, it won't be dual band memory because memory sticks have to be same size...as far as I know. Any ideas?
