Can 2 computers each have a separate ethernet cable to a router?

I have a desktop (an iMac G5) now connected via ethernet cable to a router. I also have an iBook which I want to connect to the router via another ethernet cable (to the 2nd LAN port). (I'll set up a wireless connection later; there's a slight complication w/ the router configuration). Is it possible to do this? The router itself is connected to a broadband cable modem.

Yes a router is designed to allow multiple Ethernet devices connect to one Ethernet source. Just plug them into separate LAN ports on the router.

  • Can the wifi port and the ethernet cable work simultaneously?

Sometimes when I am uploading a file i will plug in the ethernet cable with the assumption that it will help it upload faster if it has a "direct connection." Does it actually help?
For example: I am uploading to youtube at the moment and only 3% has been uploaded using wifi. The i decide it's going to slow and I plug in the ethernet cable from the router. Does this actually cause it to go faster?

ISP's limit your upload speed to a fraction of the download speed to prevent people from hosting their own content or servers etc.
If you have a stationary desktop machine, hooking up via Ethernet cable and setting that as the primary connection (turn off wifi) would certainly be faster.
If your wifi is slow, then you might be having a interferance or local neighbor hogging your bandwidth.

  • Can access internet when connected w/ethernet cables in router, but WRT54G says it can't connect

I have my router, modem, and computer all set up correctly. I can access the internet in this setup but with only the computer that is connected with the ethernet cord to the router. Yet, my WRT54G router can't connect to the internet in the Linksys easy setup nor through the http:192.168.1.1 method.
When I changed the internet connection type to PPPoE, my modem was unable to access the internet. I also changed the IP to 192.168.2.1 but that didn't help. I have performed several power cycles. I have upgraded the firmware.
I changed the internet connection type back to DHCP, so I am able to come on this website, but I can't set up the wireless since the router says it can't connect to the internet. Please help!

Start it from scratch...Reset your router and re-configure it...
Press and hold the reset button for 30 seconds...Release the reset button...Unplug the power cable from your router, wait for 30 seconds and re-connect the power cable...Now re-configure your router...
Also make sure that your computer is set to obtain IP automatically, disable any firewalls, security softwares on the computer before trying to access the setup page.

  • Can I run airtunes through an ethernet cable?

OK, so we discover that AirTunes is not very reliable, keeps cutting out, and is not really an appropriate part of a Hi-Fi system.
If I want to have the Mac a long way from my amp, an alternative is a long audio cable. Pricey, and prone to interference.
HOW ABOUT... connecting the Mac to an A/P Express via ethernet cable and then the A/P express to the amp via a short audio cable?
    Mac -ethernet-> A/P Express -audio cable-> amp
    Will this work?

  • Ethernet cable length from route

Love this forum: After a few years of use this is the first time I haven't found an answer by searching!
Everyone seems to say that the limit of ethernet cable is 100 meters but in two apartments with different routers I have not been able to get a connection between (two different) the router and my computer over about 25 feet. I'm using a (seemingly) top of the line d-link wireless router but maybe its too weak. Can anyone suggest a router or switch that will reach 50 feet or more?
    Thanks!
(P.S.) wireless is too slow to back up my iPhoto library, which I want to back up to a Linux Ubuntu PC home server.

    Thanks for responding!
The iPhoto library is about 25 gigs at the moment (iTunes is another 15gigs), and can grow pretty quickly. I do have 250gig firewire drive for back up next to the computer but I feel my life of photos in that library and want a second backup in another room of the apartment. I installed Ubuntu on a Windows PC so I could use NFS sharing with the Mac (works great except for speed).
The specifications all talk about maximum theoretical lengths and none of the manufacturers discuss actual cable lengths. Everyone seems to assume that any router will do the job.
I did find an interesting post at the bottom of this:
    http://discussions.hardwarecentral.com/showthread.php?t=172404
so I've order a couple of 50ft cat5e cables with factory attached jacks to see if it was my crimping color order that was at fault (which doesn't really make sense but it's the only thing I've found)
Should get them in a few days...

  • My daughter and I both have an iPod;can we each have our own music library

My daughter recently got a new iPod and I inherited her old nano. I'd like to clear her music files from the nano and place music files of my choosing on it with out effecting her itunes library. We have one desktop computer; Is there any way for each of us to have our own library to use with our own iPods?

When the iPods belong to different people, there are basically two ways of using multiple iPods on a computer and these involve:
    a) Sharing a single iTunes library and or user account or
    b) Creating multiple user accounts.
Note: When you are sharing an iTunes library, you don't have to set each iPod to update in the same manner, you can mix and match from the options below as each iPod has it's own update settings
Sharing a Library and/or User Account
If you want to share the one library, you can set either or all of the iPods so that they only get updated with only certain playlists (you can update from more than one if you wish):
Loading songs onto iPod automatically - Windows
Choosing the update option "Sync Music - Selected playlists" allows you to create a playlist specifically for the iPod and drag the tracks you want into it. If you tire of the list and want to change it, you just add or remove the songs you don't want. The ones you take out out remain in the library to be used some other time if you choose. You can read more about playlists at these links:
iTunes: Creating playlists of your favorite songs
How to create a Smart Playlist with iTunes
Or you can choose to update any or all of the iPods manually and just drag whatever content you want to them: Managing content manually on iPod
It's also possible to have multiple libraries in a single account. To create or access a second (or more) library, hold down the Option key (or Shift key in Windows) when launching iTunes 7. In the resulting dialogue you will get the option to create a new library or navigate to the other Library.
Note: You can only have one Library open at a time and iTunes will default to the last library opened if you don't use the keyboard command to choose one. This can prove tricky when using multiple iPods, if you don't use the keyboard command you can risk syncing to the wrong library:
    Using multiple iTunes libraries -Windows
    Separate User Accounts
Another option is to create a separate User account for each person on your PC or Mac. Different accounts by definition would give you completely separate libraries. Each account has it's own iTunes folder, Library and iTunes Music folder and you load it with CDs etc just as you did with your original one. The iPod can be set to update however the owner chooses, sync all, manual or sync specific playlists
I don't use Windows so I can't give you a step by step on that one, however I can point you to another web page which should help you out. You can read about Windows user accounts here:

  • Can't Connect to Internet via Ethernet Cable.

    Hi
I've looked around but haven't found anyone with exactly this problem. I can't get my MacBook Pro to connect to the internet via ethernet at my dorm. I am on the same connection with the same cable on a different computer right now, so I know that is not the problem. When I plug the cable in to my MacBook Pro it tells me that the cable IS connected, but when I try to go on a site on either Safari or Firefox, it takes a couple minutes trying and then tells me that I don't have a connection. I guess the problem lies somewhere between the connection and the browser. I am using DHCP (I don't know what that means but that's the default and other posts have said to make sure that that's what one is using) and the "connect using PPPoE" box is not checked. My ip starts out 192 etc. so I assume it isn't self-assigned. I WOULD LOVE ANY HELP YOU CAN OFFER.
I just got back to school today and this is already making this semester pretty awful.

I am having the same issue. Everything was working hunky-dory but then just up and stopped. The Airport works ok, but considering I am leeching off someone else's across the hall, that is not the most reliable solution.
In my Network Diagnostics, the Ethernet connection is given a green light, but the it seems unable to find the internet at all.
I have reset the router several times, restarted my computer several times, and various combinations of the two, as well as changing ports and cables etc...
    any suggestions?

Are you sure the lan driver is the correct driver for your Lan port? And I think you referring to your ethernet port? We have lots of terminology miss-used here and confused as to what they do.

  • I have an itunes account with 3 ipods can we each have our own email address

can we have our own email address if we share the 1 itunes account???

There can be only one emailladdress accociate with an Apple/iTunes ID.  However, after you initiall set up the Messages and FaceTime apps with the Apple/iTunes ID you can add another email amessaging/calling addresses and delete the Apple/iTunes email address.

  • How do you have more than 1 ipod in your family and only 1 computer to be able to each have a separate account?

HOw do you have more than 1 ipod int he family and be able to have your own itunes on 1 computer?

Did you read the support document at the other end of the link? What additional information do you desire?
The Apple support document How to use multiple iPods with one computer (n.b. same link as above!) suggests a number of ways for managing the media content. I use method two (Sync with selected playlists) with a slight twist. Rather than regular playlists I set the grouping field to indicate which users should receive which tracks and create smart playlists based on the content of this field.
    e.g.
"Alice's Tracks" is "Grouping contains Alice" + "Kind contains audio"
"Bob's Videos" is "Grouping contains Bob" + "Kind does not contain audio"
Tracks that both Alice & Bob want on their iPods have the grouping set to "Alice/Bob"
    etc.
I currently manage our family's five iDevices using this system, each getting a different selection to suit their tastes and the capacity of their device. An advantage of using the grouping field is that it is stored in file tags (for non-wav audio files anyway) so that it is relatively easy to recreate the playlists should the iTunes library get trashed and need rebuilding. Also useful if you move files about manually as playlist membership is preserved when you delete & re-import the tracks.

  • I have a wireless modem just want time capsule to backup do I have to use Ethernet cable

I just bought time capsule to wirelessly backup since I never remembered to connect my old system that stopped working. If I just plug it in will my Mac see it or do I have to have the time capsule connected to the modem/wireless router in the house?

Our recommendation would be to follow the instructions in the Time Capsule Setup Guide to connect the Time Capsule to your modem/router using a wired Ethernet connection.
If you have plenty of time to experiment, and do not become frustrated easily, you might be able to configure the Time Capsule to connect using wireless only.  But, even if you succeed with the setup,  there are some serious downsides here:
    1) This type of configuration is not officially supported by Apple
    2) Backups will take twice as long as normal due to a "double hop" connection that must occur during backups.
"Hop one" would the wireless connection between the Mac and your modem/router. "Hop two" would be the signal traveling back again from the modem/router to the Time Capsule.
    3) In addition to taking twice as long as normal, the chances of an error occurring during a backup are doubled.
Since this type of backup is VERY SLOW, you would want to allow a full day or two for the first backup of your Mac to the Time Capsule.  The same backup using a wired Ethernet connection would probably take a 2-3 hours.
The bottom line here is that this is perfect example of a situation where the fact that you might be able to do something does not in any way imply that you should do it.
    But, it's your decision.

  • Given wireless range of Time Capsule is 150', will this work? Put DSL modem on phone line in garage, connect ethernet to small office bldg (125') and connect separate ethernet to main house (200'). Time capsule on each end (or Airport Express)? Thx

Given Time Capsule wireless range is 150', will this solution work? In detached garage, connect DSL modem to phone line, then connect ethernet cable to DSL modem and run 125' to small office bldg. Connect separate ethernet cable to DSL modem and run 200' to main house. Put time capsule or Airport Express in each bldg resulting in separate wireless networks in each? Thanks.

This will work very well. You can run a CAT5e (or CAT6) Ethernet cable up to 330 feet...or 100 meters...with virtually no signal loss.
CAT6 costs a bit more, but will handle next generation Ethernet speeds, so if you have a choice, suggest that you opt for CAT6 cabling.

  • How can I use my time capsule with Ethernet cable? How is it also possible to use time capsule as a normal external hard drive?

My problem is that I don't know how to use my Time Capsule with Ethernet Cable, as when I use wireless it is really slow.

Make sure that there is an Ethernet cable from one of the LAN <-> ports on your modem/wireless router to the WAN port on the Time Capsule
Click on the Wireless tab at the top of the page
Change the setting for Wireless Mode to Off (I assume that you do not want the Time Capsule to provide a wireless network since you already have a wireless network)
Next, click the Internet icon at the top of the screen, then click the Internet Connection tab
    Connect Using = Ethernet
Connection Sharing = Off (Bridge Mode)
Click the Update button at the bottom and wait 30 seconds for the Time Capsule to restart and display a green light
Then, you must power off your entire network...all devices....in any order that you want
    Wait a minute
Start your modem/router first and let it run a minute
Start the Time Capsule and let it run a minute
Keep starting devices one at a time until everything is powered up
If you are using Time Machine for backups, you will need to reset the connection because you have changed the way in which the Time Capsule connects to your network
Open System Preferences (gear icon) on the dock
    Open Time Machine
    Click Select Disk
Click the Time Capsule to highlight it
Click Use for Backup or, it might be Use Disk
Now you can connect your Mac using an Ethernet cable to one of the LAN <-> ports on the Time Capsule to back up using Ethernet. Be sure to turn off the wireless on your Mac before you start the backup.
If you want to backup using wireless, disconnect the Ethernet cable from the Mac to the Time Capsule and turn on the wireless and connect to your wireless network. Your computer will now backup using wireless.

  • I am trying to setup airport express. do i have to have it connected to an ethernet cable? i want to connect it wirelessly

i am trying to setup an airport express wirelessly. can this be done or do i have to have an ethernet cable pluged into it?

You can set up the Express using AirPort Utility and wireless only, but you must first log on to the default network that the Expess provides.....Apple Network xxxxxx....and then open AirPort Utility.
    No password is required.
For most users, the Ethernet cable method is simpler....if you have a spare Ethernet cable handy.
