Can 2 users on one computer share 1 itunes music folder?

There must be a way to do this, I just can't seem to find the answer.
The reason I need to do this is my ancient PowerBook only recognizes my new iPhone on one userid, not the one where all my music is loaded.
Thanks in advance for any help you can provide.
Catherine

If you put the library on a shared folder it should work fine. However you will want to make it so only one user is accessing the library at a time to avoid corruption (two users trying to write to the same database files).
You can copy the entire iTunes folder to the shared directory, then use this method to open it from that location...

  • I would like to move the Tv show folder to an external HD. Can I do this without moving the entire iTunes music folder?

I would like to move the TV Shows folder from my iMac's HD to an external HD to free up some space. Can I do this without moving the entire iTunes Library folder? If so, can my other devices like iPads and Apple TV find the moved TV shows folder?

All kinds of things are possible with iTunes, but few of them are easy.  Yes, you can isolate TV shows on a different drive.  The degree of complexity depends upon how much work and learning you are interested in doing.  The easiest solution is to delete them all from iTunes but do not let iTunes delete the actual media files.  Then go to the folder where TV shows are located and copy that folder to a different drive.  Now hold down the option key and drag them back to iTunes so it adds them again.  Using the option key means the file doesn't get copied to iTunes' main media folder.  However, since these are being added as new files it means you risk losing some information entered about them such as personal ratings, date added, date last played, etc.  There are ways of retaining this data but that's where you really have to learn how to do workarounds with iTunes.
I have never seen an AppleTV, nor used an iPhone but my understanding is these devices do not directly use the files, they do so through iTunes.  As long as the entries can be found in iTunes then they should be accessible by other devices.

  • How to get several users on one computer their own iTunes account???

We have 3 of us on one computer. ipod, ipod nano, and a shuffle. I don't want my 8 year old to access my 16 year olds music files. How can we all have our own, I guess you call it, "account" or "library" so when my 8 year old plugs in her shuffle, it does NOT download my 16 year olds stuff? Make the answer simple and clear please Thanks.

Create a new user account for each person.
Go to System prefs -> Accounts.
Select the songs for the each user drag them to Users/username/drop box.
Log on using the user account, open iTunes then File - > *Add to library* and select the files in their drop box.
Then delete the files from the drop box.

  • How do I share my iTunes music folder between two macs?

I am running an iMac and a Mac mini on a home network. I want to have both macs use the same music folder, so that I can rip, burn, update, and synch from either computer. My music folder is located on my Mac mini in the usual location.
I went to preferences/advanced on my iMac and changed the location of the music folder to point it to the folder on the mac mini. It then said it was updating the library. I still can't see all of the music that is my folder on the mini, from the iMac.
    What am I doing wrong?

No, it's simpler, epecially if iTunes manages your music for you (default).

do not confuse moving your whole folder and library with moving just media files as in

Quick answer if you let iTunes manage your music:  Copy the whole iTunes folder and all its subfolders and files intact to the other drive.  Start iTunes with the option key held down and guide it to the new location of the library.

  • How can two users of one computer keep their bookmarks separate on Mozilla?

My computer has User A and User B. User A has dozens of bookmarks all neatly organized in categories. User B would like to have his bookmarks on this computer, too, but doesn't want them to get mixed up with User A's bookmarks. What can we do with User B's bookmarks to keep them separate from User A's?

  • HT1420 I downloaded my first video from iTunes store. when I went to play it, iTunes asked me to authorize the computer. It is already authorized! Now it shows 2 computers authorized when I am only using one computer for my iTunes music and videos. ???

I downloaded my first purchased movie from the iTunes store. When I tried to play it., I was asked to authorize the computer. I had already authorized the computer to play music, so I thought this was the only authorization I needed. i went ahead and authorized my computer, Now it shows that I have 2 authorized computers! I don't understand. Shouldn't one authorization be enough?

    Hmm,
This is not a big problem as you can have up to five authorised devices.
However, if this is a problem you can go to Store, View my Account,
    Deauthorize All
Then you will have to authorize your computer again.
Hopefully the number will stay as 1.

  • Multiple users on home LAN sharing both the Music folder and library

    Hi there,
I've been hunting around the web and not found anything that helps me with this specific situation though various articles come close but I've not actually succeeded yet, I was wondering if anyone can help.
I have a Windows XP home PC, 2 user login profiles, both share the same music folder but have different librarys.Using Itunes 10.
I've recently purchased a NAS, I have successfully moved the music folder to the NAS and now also have a netbook (windows 7) seeing the same music folder.
What I want is to have any users/PCs to have the same music folder and the same library on Itunes.
Where I come unstuck is the library as I want the library from the primary user on the PC to be the master, I want this located on the NAS and I want any machine/user to share this same library. I know it's the Itunes folder in My Music, I can easily move that but most forums suggest starting Itunes holding down shift andselecting a new library but I do not get this option.
Instead, I go into the library options but the library command to compile (can't remember exactly that command) seems to retain the local library store.
Is there a way I can just add my NAS located music folder and point Itunes to a different itunes folder for the library?
Separately, I'd like to know if there is an option to keep a local copy of the music and photos folders, I'd like the netbook to be able to this as a backup of the NAS.
Really appreciate any help on this.
    Thanks.

It is not really practical for multiple users on different PCs to use the same library database. This is because the iTunes database is not multiuser, the can however share the same content files.
So each PC will need it's own library database (iTunes Library.itl) which in this case is best located on the users own PC.
Utilities such as Tune ranger can keep libraries in sync:

For backup, some people find synctoy a free utility from Microsoft works for them.

  • HT202213 I have 3 users on one computer with 3 unique user accounts.  Each have unique ITunes accounts.  How do we share our music libraries using home sharing?

I have 3 users on one computer with 3 unique user accounts.  Each of us have separate and unique ITunes accounts.  How do we share our music libraries using Home Sharing?  Everything that I can find talks about sharing between networked computers, but this is all on the same computer.  I just want to share between ITunes accounts.  Thanks!

Hi b noir, I also have two users on one pc with two different iTunes libraries.  But I also want to put them onto an external hard drive so that I can free up some memory on the pc.  So I figure I need to consolidate the two users iTunes libraries first before moving to hard drive?  But not quite sure how to do that on the iTunes 11?  Thanking you in advance!!

  • Can more than one user on the same computer access an itunes music library

I want to be able to access the same itunes music library from to different user on the same computer so either one of us when we log on the computer can open up Itunes and access the same songs. Is it possible?

Yes this is possiable using the "Share" feature in iTunes. You just have to consolidate your library and then move the "iTUnes Music" folder to your share folder. A step by step detailed instructions on how to set this up can be found here. http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93195

  • I tried to set up two users on one computer, now I can't make iTunes match work for either.

Lots of people seem to be having multiples user problems on iTunes, but I can't find a solution to mine so please help.
I got a new iMac.  Switched it on.  Connected to iTunes Match - all fine and dandy.
After a couple of weeks I decided I should follow Apple's advice and set up a separate user account on the imac for my wife.  I connected to iTunes match using her user name and down loaded a bunch of her favourite music.
Naive fool that I was, I didn't realise I had fallen into Apple's moronic multi-user trap. Only one user on one computer can use it????  Why???
I thought that it was me being stupid so I switched everything off - including iTunes Match.  Now nothing works.
If I log on with my iTunes ID and try to switch on iTunes Match it asks me if I want to add this computer, and then gives me the "This computer is already associated with an Apple ID - you can't use it for 90 days" message.
If I use my wife's iTunes ID, it asks her if she would like to subscribe for £21.99 a year.
The exact same thing happens whether I sign into the computer itself with my account or hers.
This is awe inspringly annoying.  Please tell me how to fix this.
    thanks.

At this time there is no "solution." You'll simply have to wait the 90 days to re-enable iTunes Match.
For now here is my suggestion. In your User Account, in OS X, sign out of whatever iTunes Store account you are signed in with. Then sign in with your store account and leave it at that. Now sign out of your OS X User Account, sign into your wife's OS X User Account and sign into the iTunes Store with her Apple ID (if necessary sign out of the account first).
Now, you can go back to your OS X User Account and attempt to enable iTunes Match. You will probably get the "wait 90 days" message. If so leave it, mark your calendar, and wait for the 90 days to expire. You can try contacting iTunes Store support at <https://expresslane.apple.com> if you wish, but I really do not know how useful that will be.
Incidentally, you get the message to pay for the service when trying to enable it on your wife's Apple ID because the service has not been purchased using that Apple ID. iTunes Match is designed to be a single-user service that is never signed out of and is associated with one, and only one, Apple ID and a regional store.

  • Multiple Users, one computer, share music?

Hello! We have several users on one computer, and 1 external hard drive connected. The internal drive isn't very big, the computer is pretty old. There are a lot of audio files on the external that all the users would like to have in their respective iTunes library (and on their iPods). Can this be done? and how? Is this even a Home Sharing problem? If not, I'm sorry.
    Thank you!
    Joanna

On a Mac, you should be able to stream music from one user account to another via Home Sharing. (That way, you can just maintain one set of content files in one user account on the Mac.)
Try Chris's instructions from the following post:
iTunes Home Sharing now works between users on same computer

  • How do I have mutliple users on one computer?

I have an I-tune account on my computer and want to have multiple users to download their own music, whether off a CD or purchasing from I-tunes, for thier own I-Pods. How do I do this?

When the iPods belong to different people, there are basically three ways of using multiple iPods on a computer and these involve:
    a) Sharing a single iTunes library
    b) Creating Multiple Libraries in a single user account
    c) Creating multiple user accounts.
Note: When you are sharing an iTunes library, you don't have to set each iPod to update in the same manner, you can mix and match from the options below as each iPod has it's own update settings
Sharing a Library and/or User Account
If you want to share the one library, you can set either or all of the iPods so that they only get updated with only certain playlists (you can update from more than one if you wish): Loading songs onto iPod automatically - Windows
Choosing the update option "Sync Music - Selected playlists" allows you to create a playlist specifically for the iPod and drag the tracks you want into it. If you tire of the list and want to change it, you just add or remove the songs you don't want. The ones you take out out remain in the library to be used some other time if you choose. You can read more about playlists at these links:
iTunes: Creating playlists of your favorite songs
How to create a Smart Playlist with iTunes
Or you can choose to update any or all of the iPods manually and just drag whatever content you want to them: Managing content manually on iPod
Loading the iPod shuffle differs slightly but it can still be used with the others, for details have a look at this page: Loading songs onto iPod shuffle - Windows
    Multiple Libraries
It's also possible to have multiple libraries in a single account. To create or access a second (or more) library, hold down the Shift key in Windows when launching iTunes 7. In the resulting dialogue you will get the option to create a new library or navigate to the other Library.
Note: You can only have one Library open at a time and iTunes will default to the last library opened if you don't use the keyboard command to choose one. This can prove tricky when using multiple iPods, if you don't use the keyboard command you can risk syncing to the wrong library: Using multiple iTunes libraries -Windows
    Separate User Accounts
Another option is to create a separate User account for each person on your PC or Mac. Different accounts by definition would give you completely separate libraries. Each account has it's own iTunes folder, Library and iTunes Music folder and you load it with CDs etc just as you did with your original one. The iPod can be set to update however the owner chooses, sync all, manual or sync specific playlists
I don't use Windows so I can't give you a step by step on that one, however I can point you to another web page which should help you out. You can read about Windows user accounts here: Using Windows XP User Accounts

  • ITunes Shared library with all users on one computer

I am trying to share my iTunes (version 8.2) library with all the users on my computer. So far, this is what I have done:
    1) I have moved the music folder into the shared folder.
    2) I have selected "Add to Library" in all three accounts.
    3) I have tried checking and unchecking the "Copy files to iTunes Music folder when adding to library."
Since then, I have added some CDs that had some songs that I already had. When I loaded these CDs, I deleted the duplicates that had the worse sound. Since then, everything is unwinding. The additions on one user account are not being added to the others. When I delete a track, iTunes (obviously) says that it can't find the song anymore. What's odd is that I then delete the one that is missing, and both are missing now: the one that I deleted on the original account and the one that I did not delete on the original account.
I am starting to think that I need to start from scratch. So, to make a long story short (too late), how can I share my iTunes library with all users on one computer, where I can make a change in one account that will update automatically on the other accounts. If it can't be updated automatically, how can I add/delete files without causing the headaches I am currently having?
    Brian

I actually followed this, but I still had problems that I listed above. Is there any way that when you make changes to one account (even if there is only one main account where changes are made), the changes are automatically (or at least easily) applied to the other user accounts?
