Can 2nd Gen Express extend dual band or only a single?

Since the new express is simultaneous dual band capable, I assumed I could extend both the 2.4 & 5 GHz bands at the same time.  While setting it up I noticed it only allows one netrwork from the Extend drop down box.
Is the simultaneous dual band only for creating a new network and not an option for extending?

Since my Express (and Apple TV) are located a floor above my Extreme, I'm guessing that they'll automatically connect to the 2.4Ghz band since it'll be stronger/better quality signal...?
Yes, that would be a good assumption.
I'm looking to get the best performance to the ATV (hoping for 5GHz) and don't have the luxury of running CAT cable to bridge the 2 routers.
From personal exprience the ONLY way to get stable streaming performance, especially of HD content, is via a Gigabit Ethernet connection between routers. As you surmised, 5GHz wireless would (or should) perform better than 2.4 GHz. If you are "stuck" with the lower frequency band, be sure to eliminate as many other 2.4 GHz signal sources (portable phones, microwave ovens, baby monitors, etc.) as possible to achieve the best bandwidth for streaming.

  • Which airport is better, 2nd gen express or 2nd gen extreme

I use an older 2nd generation airport extreme on the 2nd floor of my house and needed another to cover another portion of the house and recently bought a 2nd gen airport express to extend it.
My question is, which is better(more powerful) to use as the main wifi hub: the 2nd generation extreme or the 2nd generation express?

The 2nd Gen AirPort Express is a simultaneous dual band product, which will produce both a 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz network. The 2nd Gen AirPort Extreme cannot do this. For what it is worth, the 2nd Gen Express is capable of higher wireless speeds than the 2nd Gen AirPort Extreme as well.
If you use the 2nd Gen Express as the "main" router, you will have the benefit of dual band performance for devices that connect to the AirPort Express in the main area.  If you have any 5 GHz capable devices, they will connect at higher speeds than other devices as well because of the dual band capability of the Express.
The 2nd Gen AirPort Extreme is not simultaneous dual band capable, so it will extend only one band from the AirPort Express, likely the 2.4 GHz band since it is the stronger signal.
It probably does not make much sense to use the 2nd Gen AirPort Extreme as the main router, since the Express will only be able to extend one band from the AirPort Extreme, since that is all that it can produce at one time.  On the other hand, if you are happy with the AirPort Extreme as the main router, and you are not looking for higher speed capability in the main area, you could continue to use the Extreme as your main router.  It does look more impressive.
As far as rated signal strength, you might be surprised to learn that Apple rates the smaller 2nd Gen Express as having just a bit higher signal output power than the 2nd Gen Extreme.
One question though....other than the modem, how many devices do you plan to connect using a wired Ethernet connection to your "main" router?

  • What frequency is AirPlay when a 2nd gen Express joins a 1st gen Extreme?

I'm guessing the 2nd gen Express drops down to 2.4Ghz instead of utilitizing the 5Ghz it is capable of.  Correct?  I've been noticing some long drop offs and only solution is to unplug the Express (not the Extreme) and then it works fine again.  I assume this is an interference issue that could likely be fixed if the Express was running at 5Ghz -- and requiring a more modern Extreme running 5Ghz.

    Thanks for the confirmation!

  • 2nd Gen Express keeps dropping the network

One of my 2nd Gen Airport Expresses keeos tripping off forcing me to restart it.  It then reconnects fully for a matter of minutes before the dreaded amber light returns and Airport Utility advises me it is no longer extending the network.

Try moving the AirPort Express closer to the main router and also do whatever you can to minimize obstructions in the signal path between the main router and AirPort Express.
Users often locate the AirPort Express much too far away from the main router. Example.....you have your main router downstairs over on one side of the house. You want better coverage upstairs in a bedroom on the other side of the house from the main router.
The correct location for the Express in this example would be a point that is about half way between the main router and the upstairs bedroom.

  • Extending dual band issues

Received a call. New client, "Wants to extend his Apple network"
So I swing by and pick up an Airport Express. Arrive at the clients to discover that he has a dual band Extreme Router.
He has set up a Shared Network, which he wants extended so others throughout the abode can get internet and print. He also has a Private Network which he does not want the others to have access to. I learn you cannot extend the Shared network. Then I thought just flip them, have him use the Shared network with a private password, and make the normal Private network the one for which everyone has the password. In the same room, works fine. Create the extended network using the utility on the express. less than 25 feet from the express base station, the network is not being seen by an iPad. Windows machines see it, sometimes can join with a "low signal" message. Then the windows machine drops the signal and rejoins saying it is unsecured and it doesn't have internet.
I'm thinking of pulling an ethernet cable and just setting up a wired connection to the express and making a separate network with the express.
Anyone seen this type of problem with the dual bands and extending the networks? Or have suggestions which may help

+He has set up a Shared Network, which he wants extended so others throughout the abode can get internet and print.+
It sounds like what your client calls the Shared Network is actually the Guest network. +Computers on the guest network have access to the internet, but they cannot "see" any other devices on the main or Private network. So, users on this network will not be able to print or share files with any devices on the Private network.+ And, as you have already discovered, the Guest, or Shared, network cannot be extended...either by wireless or ethernet.
You can extend the main, or Private, network but you have to setup both the AirPort Extreme and the AirPort Express for this. If you only configured the Express, the extend setup won't work. Unfortunately, the client really wants the Guest network extended. Even if you could do this, which you can't, printers would not be available on this network.
+I'm thinking of pulling an ethernet cable and just setting up a wired connection to the express and making a separate network with the express.+
That would also work for the Private network, but not the Guest or Shared network. You could setup a separate network, or you could assign the same name to the network that the main or Private network is using, and "extend" in that manner.

  • Extending dual band Extreme

When I extend the Airport Extreme network, using the Express, it asks me for the name of the network.
On the Extreme I have devided the network in 2.4ghz and 5ghz (with different name for the 5Ghz).
I can only choose one of them to extend.. is this 'normal' or can I extend both? (the 2.4ghz and the 5ghz).
    Thanks!

The AirPort Express is a single band device. I can work with either a 2.4 GHz network or a 5 GHz network, but not both at the same time. So, you will have to choose which band you want to extend.
If you need to extend both the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands of the AirPort Extreme, you will need to use 2 AirPort Express devices, or another simultaneous dual band AirPort Extreme.

  • Airport Express supports dual-band. Airport Extreme supports simultaneous dual-band. What's the difference?

What is the difference between the two. And which one would be better for extending my wifi signal for my ipod touch
    http://www.apple.com/wifi/

    Hi Joel,
Simultaneous dual band = can process signals on both bands concurrently.
dual band = can process a signal on one band at a given time,  either or.

  • Can 2nd Gen iPod run on newest iOS?

Was given a used 2nd Gen iPod Touch, can't download any apps because it says I don't have iOS 3.2....how do I update my iPod to get the newest apps?? And if I can't do that....how do I know what apps I can download???

I have the most updated iTunes I believe (10 dot something I think---not on the same computer right now).
My computer has Windows Vista on it.
I looked at updating a 1 G ipod, but the ipod I was given already has those updates...meaning either A) it is a 1G and was updated or is a 2G. It has the all silver back if that means anything.
Well, to solve all my problems I just asked for the most updated ipod touch for Christmas. Until then...all I can do I guess is download my cd's to this ipod.
    Thanks though!!

  • Which Mac's have airport that can work on the new dual band Airport?

I have a MB470 Macbook Pro (Late 2008) and want to know if it can transmit on the 5GHz band if I were to buy the new AirPort Extreme Base Station dual band?
I checked the manual and spec but no mention.
Also from reading on this subject I have seen most articles saying only the original 802.11a band wifi products used 5GHZ bands and b/g/n use 2.4GHZ so what has happened there? Have manufacturers started using the 5GHZ again only recently and can products have their firmware upgraded to make them work on 5GHZ?

The 802.11a standard works on the 5 GHz radio band; for 802.11b/g, it's the 2.4 GHz band, but for 802.11n it can be both bands.
Have manufacturers started using the 5GHZ again only recently and can products have their firmware upgraded to make them work on 5GHZ?
Use of the 5 GHz band for Wi-Fi is restricted in some countries due to conflicts with either military or governmental regulations. Manufacturers typically comply with these regulations in order to sell their products in such countries "legally."
Firmware alone, in most cases, will not solve the problem. The device would have to have the proper antennae & transceiver to meet the appropriate standard in order to provide the wireless network.

  • Extending dual-band wifi?

I'm keen to replace my Airport Extreme to the new model so that I can use 5GHz for my MacBook Pro and 2.4GHz for my iPhone. However, if I want to extend the network, does anyone have any idea of how this could be done? Could I use an Airport Express to extend the 2.4GHz part of the network? I've heard that extending wifi networks slows them down - but would the 5GHz part be 'immune' from this slowdown?

I have a similar question, but slightly different angle on the problem. In my network I have an older APBS (snow, I think? b/g only) that is connected to the cable modem. Currently I'm using WDS, with this SnowBS as main, to extend to an AEBS (gigabit, not-dual antenna) in my office. This is connected to printers, NAS, etc.
I have both G and N clients to serve, but would like to the N clients to be faster. Currently everything is limited by the WDS limitation.
If I got the new dual AEBS, could that be a remote WDS on 2.4 ghz and server N-only at 5ghz? Or does WDS screw up the dual antenna somehow? Is there a better way to architect my network to get N speeds?
    TIA, tf

  • IPod Shuffle 2nd Gen, blinks 3 times and stops (Only connected to power outlet))

Its a iPod Shuffle 2nd generation of 1GB. When I connect it to a power outlet via Apple's USB Adapter, it blinks 3 times and then it stops until I reconnect it again (reconnecting leads to the same thing). When I turn it on, it functions normally. I haven't used it in a long time ago, but I connected it a long time to iTunes to pass songs and when I turn it on it'
When I connect it to iTunes, it's the same, but iTunes recognizes it as a non-problem iPod. It even charges connected to iTunes (but it only blinks 3 times after connecting it and it's over, but keeps connected)
I think it even charges with iTunes, i can copy songs and everything. But I don't want to be stuck at a computer every time i need to charge

  • E3200 Dual Band router only guest access works

Hello, I am looking for some support on my router.  Today my main band stopped working and I am unable to connect.  I tried changing the password and still am unable to connect and can't even get an option to key the new password in from other devices, although the signal is recognized.  My guest access is working fine.  Can anybody help?
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

It sounds like you don't have things configured properly.
You may need to uninstall cisco connect from your computer, and the reset the E3200 to factory defaults by pressing and holding the recessed reset button on the back of the router for 10 seconds.......then reconfigure it.
You can then download the lastest version of Cisco connect here:
    http://homesupport.cisco.com/en-us/support/routers/E3200
And then download a tool to help you find the best wireless channel here:

  • Ipod mini 2nd gen: clicking noise when plugged in only

My mini just makes clicking noises when I plug it into the usb port. I thought it was the hard drive after reading tons of posts about the clicking noise, and got a compact flash replacement but it is still clicking. I dont think it is the battery. If it was, it should hold some sort of charge shouldnt it?
    What could be causing it?
Is my mini out of whack? I did drop it before it died 2 years ago, but it worked for quite a few months after dropping it though. I just got around to working on it now cuz I miss it.

thanks for the reply. well changing the hard drive was easy. it might be the battery. it did give me some errors before it crapped out. i just dont remember what those were. i think it was an apple with a lightning over it, which would indicate a bad battery i suppose. i will try to change the battery and see how that goes. i just cant troubleshoot since nothing comes on, except for a faint clicking noise when it's hooked up to the usb.

  • 2nd Gen Extreme vs Newest Airport Extreme

I have been using a 2nd gen AirPort Extreme for 6 years now, and up until recently it worked fine. Recently, though, it seems like its range has shortened, speeds have dropped, and have to reset it often. Last night I was watching a movie on Netflix on my Apple TV (right next to the airport), and I lost the connection 6 times. I have called Comcast, and they say everything is fine on their end.
My question is this: will the newest AirPort Extreme provide me with more range and speed? I have no ac compatible devices, and but will I see a huge difference with this newer model? Should I just get another brand (not apple) wireless-n router instead? I am normally quite competent with computers, but wifi issues always stump me. The 2nd gen extreme is dual band, but both can't be used at the same time. With a newer router that allows for both bands, which devices should I put on which band? I've got two apple TVs, three MacBooks (1 Blackbook, 1Late 2011 Pro, 1 2007 MacBook) two iPhones, an ipad, a galaxy S3, and a PS3 to deal with. Also, and the answer may be obvious but humor me, I have comcast's performance internet (20Mbps/5Mbps). Is this not enough for what I'm working with?
    Any advice would be appreciated!

Don't do that. Decide which one of your AirPort Base Stations is to serve as your router. Connect that one, and no others, to the modem. Connect all the others to it, and configure them as bridges.
