Can a 2012 Mac Pro use a 2012 27in iMac as a primary display?

Greetings all,
I am trying to spec out a trade show configuration. It will have a Mac Pro, A couple iMacs, a few Macbook Pros
and a couple iPads. What I need to know is if one of the iMacs can serve as the display for the Mac pPro. The money
is not an issue, but the number of cases to be shipped might be problematic.
Once again, this is NEW hardware 2012 iMac and 2012 Mac pro.
Any advice sent my way would be useful.
Cheers,
Kev

Unfortunately currently no because the current Mac Pro's do not support Thunderbolt output which is the only method to use the current iMac's in Target Display Mode. However you can get external displays such as the Apple LED display that can be used as an external display for the Mac Pro and an iMac.
Here is an article that discusses Target Display Mode:

  • Why can't my Mac Pro use my hard drive(s)?

Ok, so I'm using a 2008 mac pro (some specifics are listed at the bottom) and I'm having trouble with my hard drive(s). The hard drive I've been using is full, and sometimes the System Information will show that is full of Audio, Movies, Photos, Apps, Backups or it's just chuck full of "Other."
But the problem is that my computer stopped using one of my hard drives a while back. It was called "Bay 5." I've opened up the computer to look at the hard drives and I actually have three. Ever since I lost Bay 5, I lost my Adobe Creative Suite and I've gotten a notification that says "The disk you inserted was not readable by this computer." But the drives are the same type as the Macintosh HD, only with 500 GB each. I've clicked "Initialize" on this notification (sorry, I tried to take screen shots but suddenly my computer says "You don't have permission to save files in the location where screen shots are stored") and it pulls up the disc utility and has a drive called "Media," (but only half the time). Bay 5 is not there and neither is the other drive that's there.
Wow, that screen shot thing is new. Maybe you guys could help me with that problem, too.
I'm lost. I've looked at 15 min. long youtube videos but none of them have helped. I just want to be able to use those hard drives. I've tried holding the D key at start-up so that the computer can do the Hardware check (or whatever it's called) but it just pulls up a flashing folder with a question mark.
    I'd really appreciate some help.
    Processor:  2 x 2.66 GHz Dual-Core Intel Xeon
    Memory:  4 GB 667 MHz DDR2 FB-DIMM
    Software: Mac OS X Lion 10.7.5 (11G63)

Buy Carbon Copy Cloner and some new drives. Make sure you have two backup sets and are using TimeMachine as well.
    Reset SMC
You have a 1,1 2006 model. It is low on memory, which is cheap at $25 2x2GB now on Amazon
Consider that drives fail and you may have some drives that are more than 4 years old.
If you want, and have the money, consider investing in Disk Warrior 4.4 or 5.0
Data Rescue 4 has a demo and would try to find files, would need a recovery drive volume of course also.
Invest in an SSD for system boot drive, $119 / 250GB, and use a WD Black 1-2TB for data $120, another for TimeMachine.
Adobe CS needs more memory that you have.
AHT is not going to help and is on the OEM DVD with 10.4.x that it came with but what you need is boot from another drive or recovery mode and use Disk Utility (and or Disk Warrior). Single User Mode and 'fsck" is also useful as would Safe Boot. But you need a working copy (clone)  backup too.
I like to have a nice small "Emergency" boot drive with just the minimum for system maintenance, 20GB is fine, some users create a USB flash drive but FireWire or USB2 work well. Or just designate and create a small 20GB volume on any of your other drives.

If money is no object, OWC will swap 2010 or 2012 Processor shelves for whatever you want as long as you have a working Mac Pro 5,1 shelf to swap and a ton of money.

The basic charge is US$949 starting from the 2.8 Quad.
    • to move up to the 3.33 hex add US$550 to the base price for a total of about US$1500.

  • WiFi Explorer Vr 1.7.2(6) lost sensitivity on my 2012 Mac Pro

When running WiFi Explorer on my 2012 Mac Pro, I can see my 4 networks and occasionally one or two in my nieghborhood
But if I run the same App on my 27 inch iMac sitting nest to the Pro, I can "see" 12 or more networks.
Am wondering if I may have a weak wireless board in the Pro?
Or, could it be the metal cabinet that is hindering wireless signal.
The Pro works just fine on my own network..
Is there a test method I can use to check the internal wireless card on the Pro?

The metal chassis of the Mac Pro does attenuate the signal somewhat. Its reception will typically be adequate, but perhaps not quite as good as another model Mac that is intended to be used mostly wireless, such as a MacBook Pro. At 42 lbs, the Mac Pro is far from portable, and has been optimized for use with Gigabit Ethernet.
One possible problem that is occasionally encountered on any Mac is a disconnected antenna wire. In this case, the performance typically drops so low that the machine is unusable. [Conversely, if your is usable, it is unlikely to have this problem.]
There is a Wireless Diagnostic available in 10.7 and later. Hold down the Option key while you click on the Wi-Fi icon in the menuBar, and a display like this one will appear. Note the last few items in the menu item include invoking the diagnostic.

  • 4K Graphics Card @60Hz for Mid-2012 Mac Pro

Does anyone know which aftermarket graphics card supports 4K at 60Hz on the Mid-2012 Mac Pro? I can't seem to find one that does in any current forums.

Sapphire Radeon HD 7950 Mac Edition and Geforce GTX680 Mac Edition should work in your MacPro, and is able to do 3840x2160 or 4K under Mac OSX 10.9 Mavericks.
    even newer cards though.

  • Erratic wakeup from sleep after 10.9.2 - 2012 Mac Pro

I completed the most recent OS X upgrade yesterday on my 2012 Mac Pro and now "wake from sleep" seems to work erratically (much more often not waking up and requiring a reboot). Occasionally a quick push of the front panel power button will produce results. Nothing else has been changed on the computer so I can only believe that this upgrade has been the cause.
Anyone else having this problem? Suggestions or things to reset/check?

  • 2012 Mac Pro - balancing cores

    Hi,
I've been reading up on balancing the core usage in Logic 9 (I have X but won't switch until it's a little more glitch-free) but am running into problems where plugins on busses (or Auxes) drive one core into the red rather than spreading across all 12/24 cores.
After reading what Apple stated on their page about balancing multi-threaded cores, I still don't seem to have solved the problem! I've done as they've advised (moving 6-8 plugins from 1 Bus or Aux across 2 or 3 daisy chaining them together) but it still just assigns one core to those buses/auxes.
Am I missing something really obvious here? It's gotten to the stage now where just two UAD plugins are bringing a 2012 Mac Pro (Dual 2.6Ghz 6-core, 24GB RAM, 512GB Mac SSD, 3TB Audio) to it's knees, either on 1 aux, or as shown, across two. There's one other channel (a parallel drum bus) which has around 5 Native plugins on which are being loaded onto the 3rd core (with the 4th core blowing over those two UAD plugins)
How are people generally sharing the plugin load across cores, as it's getting to the point now of me wondering whether a new 2013 Mac Pro is going to solve the issue, which I'd be gutted about as this Mac is normally such a work horse!
    Ben

Hi Eriksimon, thanks for your reply!
I have my Threads set to Automatic, however I had it set to 16 and it made no difference. Sadly LPX is way too buggy and glitch-tastic for me to move over (one example of the repeat regions feature which has *always* worked since version 5 now slowly copies regions out of time... ) even though it's inviting to think that it'll use all the power I have!
I wasn't aware of the refresh thing upon reopening sessions, but I was working on something today I'd DC'd three weeks ago and again, it fell over, each time at the same place. It's so frustrating!
Buffer size is 1024 samples, PBR is set to Large
    Thanks again!

  • Replacing a Mac Pro with a 2012 Mac mini?

Has anyone replaced their Mac Pro with a 2012 Mac mini? If so, are you happy with your decision?

I had the mini fitted with a SSD by Apple. Apple use the Samsung 830 and that is very capable and the price difference was not worth the effort of installing the SSD. Where installing memory is as easy as it could ever be replacing the hard disk is mind bendingly frustrating. You might think from videos such as this
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=13wcKCYo_Xw
that it is a simple procedure. What they dont tell you is that this man has freakishly tiny hands. In the real world the job reminds me of disassembling mechanical wrist watches. You need a variety of specialized tools or its just not happening. And there is no soothing music.
Also the video above misses a critical step. The antenna grate will not fit back into position unless a hook like tool is used to go through a specific hole in the grate and pull up from under whilst applying a pressure in the necessary horizontal direction.
So my advice is not to install your own HDD/SSD. The memory I used was from Crucial because Crucial is the retail side of Micron who provides Apple their memory for the mac minis.
    http://www.crucial.com/upgrade/Apple-memory/Mac+mini/Mac+mini+%28Late+2012%29-up grades.html
Having heard of memory failures in AHD from different manufacturers and read about the need for 3.35v DDR3L I ran what I got from Crucial through 6 cycles of the advanced AHD, taking about 10 hours. No failures.
I am running Parallels and under various virtual machines running simultaneously I have intensive CADs, IDEs, and all the latest games on steam maxed out on a 30 inch display, without lag or any noticeable loading time at all. It is by far the fastest machine I have used. Very impressed.

  • Can you boot a Mac Pro using a USB Pen Drive?

    Hello.
Can you boot a Mac Pro using a USB Pen Drive? OS=Windows or Linux or BSD or MacOS... I know it is bios specific on a PC if the option is available. If this is possible, does anyone have a link to instructions?
    Thanks,
    Scott

Not to get in to an argument over semantics here, but by saying "Windows should boot if you have installed the requisite Boot Camp drivers," you are implying "that the Boot Camp drivers [are] needed for Windows to boot." I was just clarifying your post so people didn't get confused.
As for booting a Mac Pro off a USB flash drive, if you have been successful in doing so, can you share with me your method? I've tried booting of an OCZ Rally2 4GB flash drive and it's never worked on my Mac Pro. It doesn't show up when I hold option down and if I try to boot through rEFIt, I get an error about my Mac's firmware not supporting USB booting (I have the latest firmware installed, too). I've tried GPT and MBR partitions, both to no avail. Booting off USB hard disk drives is no problem though. And I can boot off this flash drive on a Core Duo iMac.
    Any ideas?

  • Does new 2012 mac pro ssd need trim enabler

does new 2012 mac pro ssd need trim enabler

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities
If they need TRIM (I think that the flash storage included with the MacBook Pro does not need TRIM), Apple turns it on by default with the MacBook.
However, there are some people that doesn't recommend TRIM because it may hurt (rather than improve) performance > http://blog.macsales.com/11051-to-trim-or-not-to-trim-owc-has-the-answer

  • Can dual socket Mac Pro 3,1 (2008) use two X5470?

    1. Can dual socket Mac Pro 3,1 (2008) use two X5470?
    2. And can dual socket Mac Pro 4,1 (2009) use two X5675?

All I can tell you is that the 2009 Nehalem might be somewhat upgradeable, but the Mac Pro 3,1 I believe, has an X53XX socket. The 2009 might have used either Westmere, Harpertown or Cloverdale/gainestown(???)  processors. See this URL for more info.

    also, see this
    http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/turnkey/MacPro/2010_Xeon_Processor.
Please note that this applies only to the 4,1 (2009) Mac Pro, not the 2008 one.  My advice to you, sir, is to find an independent mac Tech who would better be able to tell you if that's possible. If I were a betting man, I'd say "no" to question 1, and "probably not, but I might be wrong" to question 2
