Can a 5.1 PC speaker system be hooked up to a 2009 iMac computer?

Can an older 5.1 Suround sound speaker system from a Windows XP based computer be hooked up and operate through a 2009/2010 Intel based iMac computer?

Hello joebono,
I'm not sure which logitech system you have so I don't know what your setup is. I know on my computer my Logitech 5.1 sound system is USB.
With that being said there is not enough ports on the computer to connect all the cables to the computer to make a standard 5.1 surround system work. What you need is a speaker system where everything connects to the sub woofer and then you connect the woofer to the computer.
Alternatively like I mentioned on my own personal system is you have a speaker system powered through USB.

Can I upgrade to Mountain Lion from 10.6 on a 24" 2009 Imac? The instructions say my computer is capable. Do I have to go through Lion or Snow Leopard first?

nope you can go right from SL to ML.
Message was edited by: shldr2thewheel--oh wait, you can't go from 10.5.8 right to 10.8 since you need access to the app store.  I thought you already had 10.6 installed.

  • I just got a new iMac. And I wondered if I can. Use my yamaha speaker system with subwoofer?

I just got a new Iimac and I wondered if I can use my speaker system from my last pc, the speakers are yamahas with a powered subwoofer ?

If your presumably "amplified" Yamaha speakers have a USB connection, then it should work fine with your iMac by connecting the USB connection and THEN going into your Mac's Applications folder>System Preferences>Sound>select the "Output" tab and select the Yamaha speakers shown in the list below.  That should do it.
    Hope this helps

  • Can i change my 1TB HDD to a 2TB HDD?  Late 2009 iMac

My trusty late 2009 iMac 27 has only 55GB free.
    Can I trade/upgrade/remove and exchange the 1TB for a 2TB?

If you mean success at offloading, I'm afraid there is no "quick" way of deciding what to move unless you want to move everything. If you need to be more selective about what you move to the external drive, then I would suggest using Carbon Copy Cloner 3.5.4. You can dig down into each folder in your /Home/ folder and select all the files you want to transfer. This is the fast way of copying them. However, then you must come through the folders in the Finder so that you can delete the files you transferred. No matter how you do it, it can be pretty tedius.
Alternatively, you could copy your entire /Home/ folder to the external drive then erase the Home folder on the internal drive and set OS X to boot using the Home folder on the external drive. The downside of this is that the external drive must always be connected, turned on, and mounted. You do this using the Users & Groups preferences.
A third alternative is to copy only the folders from your Home folder that contain most of your files - Documents, Downloads, Movies, Music, and Pictures. Copy only these folders to the external drive. Then create aliases to the folders on the external drive. When you do this the aliases will be named as, "foldername alias." Foldername refers to the actual folder name. Copy these aliases to the Home folder on your internal drive. Now comes the slight of hand. OS X will not let you remove the original folders as long as you are booted from that drive. So, open Terminal in your Utilities folder. Use this command line to first remove the original folders then rename the alias files by removing "alias" from their filenames:
         cd ~/
sudo rm -Rf Documents ; mv Documents\ alias Documents
Press RETURN. You will be prompted to enter your admin password. What you type will not be echoed to the Terminal window. Press RETURN again. This will only occur this one time.
sudo rm -Rf Downloads ; mv Downloads\ alias Downloads
sudo rm -Rf Movies ; mv Movies\ alias Movies
sudo rm -Rf Music ; mv Music\ alias Music
sudo rm -Rf Pictures ; mv Pictures\ alias Pictures
This will cause OS X to look automatically for these folders and their contents on your external drive. The command line will first erase the original folder then rename the alias file to remove the word, "alias."

  • Can anyone recomend a good sound/speaker system for an iMac 24" computer.

Hello, Can anyone recomend a good sound/speaker system for an Imac 24"? And can an external speaker system be hooked up to this type of Imac? Thank you.

Unless it is for reasons of poor eyesight, it isn't necessary to write in all caps.
Depends how much you want to spend. This one is inexpensive and produces decent sound. But it won't necessarily be room filling (that is, depending on the size of your room.) You just hook it up to the headphone jack.

  • Hooking my speaker system to my imac27

Define "speaker system" for us. I have to believe you're aware of the speaker/headphone jack on the back of the iMac.

  • Is my speaker system compatible with MSI K8N SLI Diamond?

    Hi!
Can I use my old speaker system with MSI K8N SLI Diamond. My speaker system is Creative Inspire 5.1 5500D Digital with decoder. Now 5.1 sound doesn't work properly. When I try look movie with PowerDVD6, center speaker is dead and no speech on movie. On PowerDVD6, SPDIF output is selected and tried also 6.1 channel options but no, speech will not play at center speaker. Some games too 5.1 surround doesn't work. I have connected my speaker system on motherboard coaxial SPDIF to speaker systems Decoder coaxial SPDIF, and speakers on that decoder. Do I have to buy new analog speaker system to get 5.1 surround working? If I connect my speaker system directly on MB analog outputs, sound balance in very bad, rear and front speaker is good but center speaker crackling and speech at center speaker sound like volume level is much too high.

if you know that the speakers are working (tested on another pc) it is usually a software configuration error. if the decoder would mess up the sounds, it is unlikely that you would hear anything in the other speakers too.
My speakers systems works perfect my previous setup, when motherboard has nForce2 SoundStorm integrated chip.
Some other forums, peoples claims that this MSI k8n motherboard can't send multichannel 5.1 surround audio on SPDIF and I have to connect my speakers on motherboard analog sound outputs.

  • Can I copy my Lion operating system from one computer to another in the household

Can I copy my Lion operating system from my Mac Air to another household computer?

It should also be noted that you can upgrade all Apple computers in your home free IF you paid for one license.
It should also be noted that you are NOT supposed to sell a computer that contains an UPGRADED copy of Lion.

  • Can I use a  new ipod touch in an old dock/speaker system

I will be in the states soon and thinking of getting and I pod touch the 5th edition. However I have an older dock/speaker system and wonder will it work in it. I have heard that you have to buy an adaptor. Is this true and are they easy to get and how expensive are they. Also is there any issue with buying one in the states and using it in Europe

    http://store.apple.com/us/product/MD823ZM/A/lightning-to-30-pin-adapter?fnode=72
is the lightning to 30 pin adapter. There are some third party ones out there, but not a ton. If you go for a third party one go for a name brand not a no name generic.
If you want to buy one, look for a retailer with a good return policy so if it doesn't work you can take it back.
As to world wide use, shouldn't be a problem. The only thing you need to worry about is making sure you have a plug adapter if your charger is rated for world wide voltage, or making sure you have a charger that can handle the world wide variances in power. (Usually rated 100-240V in the specs)

  • Can I use my new iphone 5 with the old iHome iD9SVC Speaker System if I get an apadter? or should i just buy new speaker system made specifically for the iphone5

can I use my new iphone 5 with my old iHome iD9SVC speaker system if I get an adapter? or should i just buy a new speaker system made specifically for the iphone 5?

Look iTunes>Preferences>Devices...is a backup listed for your iPhone 5 dated BEFORE you restored your iPhone 4 backup to your iPhone 5? If not, your data is gone. If there is a backup, on your iPhone 5: Settings>General>Reset>Erase All Content & Settings. You should now be able to restore that backup, if it exists, to your iPhone 5.

    Hi there Graham!
I have a couple of articles that can help you troubleshoot this issue. First, if you are downloading HD content, you will need to know the system requirements for HD playback, which can be found here:
iTunes: Purchasing and viewing HD videos
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht3209
Next, you will want to check your video playback settings on your Windows machine. The steps for that can be found right here:
Troubleshooting iTunes for Windows Vista or Windows 7 video playback performance issues

Hope that helps. Thanks for using the Apple Support Communities!

  • How can I use a 5.1 speaker system? Logitech X-540 5.1

I am looking into buying this:
    http://www.amazon.co.uk/Logitech-X-540-Multimedia-Speaker-System/dp/B000LBHFMO
Although, I am aware there aren't enough ports in order for it to work on my laptop.
How do I go about getting these ports externally? I mean like, an external sound card? Does such a thing exist?
    Thank you

I imagine there is, but I can't recommend one. It will need an optical audio input through which to receive a 5.1 digital signal from the MBP's headphone port, and a digital-to-analog converter to provide the analog signal that the speakers evidently require.
I wasn't able to find specs for the speakers to see how many channels of input they expect.

  • Can a inspire p5800 be used without a computer, as a stand alone speaker system

Can an Inspire P5800 be used as a stand alone speaker system? Here is my story. I just got this speaker system from my girlfriend who did not know that it had to be hooked up to a computer/soundcard etc... She thought it would just hook up to my MP3 player and be used as a speaker system downstairs in my shop. It looks like the decoder DDTS-100 could be bought and used as a stand alone sound adapter? Or is there a cheaper way? The only other way I can see is a triple headphone adapter that has one 1/8 inch plug going to three 1/8 inch jacks that can be fitted with a 1/8 inch plug to plug cable in each jack, then those going into the back of the subwoofer/connector area. Would that be a mono source that way? Any help would be appriciated. marc

I have set this system up with a creative zen vision m without using a computer just stand alown, but i have only been able to get the subwoofer, front left and right speaker to work. I dont know if that helps.
