Can a built-in Service be modified?

One of the "built-in" Services available is "New TextEdit Window Containing Selection". For more flexibility in formatting the result, I would like to open the selection in Bean rather than TextEdit. If this built-in Service can be opened in Automator or AppleScript Editor, it might be possible to modify it to use Bean. I haven't been able to find where such built-in Services are located in Snow Leopard. Any suggestions will be appreciated.

I don't think Bean is scriptable, but the list of built-in Text services on my Mac Pro (accessed in the Keyboard System Preference) now includes "Paste Selection into Current Bean Document", and "New Document Containing Selection" which opens a Bean document. These do just what I wanted. I'm not sure if I just overlooked these built-in services before. If I did something to add them to the list, I'm not sure what.

My service depends on an application that is not on the default path fro SMF. Can I add a new directory to this path when I'm doing a package add of my service? I have a workaround, but it would be nice to do it automatically when the service is installed.

Your service needs that path or your method does?
Is there any reason you can't just expand the PATH at the top of your start method script?
I assume there's a way to modify the PATH within the service as well with svccfg, but I've never looked into that.

It must have found the old backup corrupt.. so you will more than likely have little choice. You can archive off the old backup if it is still useful.

How can i built a java application using java debug class on Log4J

As java API support the MethodEntryEvent, using which I can get the automatic logging statements when the method is entered or exited as HelloExample.main(with argument type).
Where HelloExample is the class name.
Main is the method entered with its argument types.
In some cases I have the o/p as

By using Log4J is there any possibility of getting these sort of o/p along with the loggers supported by Log4J. i mean to say can i built an java application which supports the MethodEntryEvent and MethodExitEvent from java API and also uses the Log4J debugging. I took an e.g. trace example, which (in J2SE 1.4.x or 5.x) will be found in $JAVA_HOME/demo/jpda/examples.jar and unpacking it by
jar -xvf $JAVA_HOME/demo/jpda/examples.jar i found the com/sun/tools/example/trace/Trace.java and passed the class constructed with logger taken from Log4J. In this case the logging message is displayed on the console. As per the requirement i need to transfer the whole o/p to an output file along with Log4J logger statements. in this case i should not give any command in the cosule except compiling and executing the programme. the programm also should able to run without the main() as i need to integrate Log4J with an application and the code must me application server independent. i need the output as i got using MethodEnteryEvent (shown as above) in case of java application built using Log4J.
Can any one help me in this regard. can any one give me some suggestion or any programme of this sort. All suggestions are welcomed.

I need a data transfer from intact hard drive of older macbook that won't boot. Can Apple provide this service even though my one to one membership has expired?

I need a data transfer from a 2005 Macbook to my new one (2010). I damaged the old laptop and although it wouldn't turn on, when I brought it to the Apple Store they ascertained that the hard drive was still intact. They said I needed to purchase a one to one membership to get a data transfer, which I did, but somehow forgot about it and now it's expired. Is there any way I can still get the data from the old hard drive transferred to my new macbook? Can Apple provide this service even though my one to one membership has expired?

Go to OWC where you can purchase a suitable enclosure for the drive. You will need an enclosure for a SATA notebook drive. This is assuming the old computer is a MacBook and not an iBook. I make this observation because the first MacBook was released in 2006, not in 2005. If yours is a 2005 model then it's an iBook and uses an ATA interface.
Install the old drive in the enclosure, connect to your new computer. You can then transfer your data.

Somewhere away back when I heard that by knowing the serial number the details of the service record on the given mac could be found. However in those days I only bought new. These days with mac's inability to run applications that require the for real OS 9 ( not classic ) I have to scour the used market. I have some high end audio midi programmes ( for example emagic, cubase VST score ) that do the job and sometimes better then then the OS X versions.

the user management tab opens in Read Only mode - thats why the button is coming as disabled. There is a button for switching into Edit mode - it looks like a pen / pencil on the top bar. Click on that - your "Create User" button would be enabled.

items are manage by serial numbers., but we dont sell it, we purchase the item for internal use only. this are the ff. information that i want to track.
1.     track the history of the item everytime it has undergone for repair
a.     some cases the repair takes place within the company, meaning employees within the company take care on the labor but only parts will be purchase
b.     some cases the repair takes place in business partner, (PO Service in this case)
2.     track the parts that was replace

Hi Fidel,
You would need the following is you wanted to use the Service Module to track internal serialized inventory/hardware:
1. Set up a customer record that would represent the internal use/company/department
2. Manually create the Customer Equipment Card (when receiving the equipment on GRPO or AP invoice, you would want to use a warehouse that represents internally-used equipment/assets)
Repairs: you could update the status of the CEC record when it's being repaired (or have a repair WH for when it's sent off-site).
Expenses: related expenses could be done by creating a Service Call linked to the CEC with details/purpose, etc. which would be tracked on the Expenses tab but the transactions don't include AP (PO's), the assumption being that any expenses would be charged back to the customer, which in this case would be internal.
If you want the expenses linked to the item/CEC then you could use Activities from Service Call and you can link the PO/AP invoice thru the Activity. You could have one S/C record that would be for tracking equipment repairs and leave it open for as long as you have the item - that would be the link between the Activities and the CEC/equipment record. Whenever repairs are to be record, you would only need to pull up the CEC record and drill-down to the S/C to create a new Activity record. This will also enable you to see how many repairs are being down - you could even breakdown the Activity on internal vs external (have it as a Type, on which you can then report on overall as well as by item).
It will depend on what info you want to capture and if you need anything for reporting that would be that detailed (i.e. down to a serialized item) as to what process & setup you want to use. Try out the above and hopefully something will work out.
