Can a bum FW port on the iMac fry the FW port on an external device

Hi i'm an editor and we work off aluminum iMacs (i know, i know, my boss is a cheap ***). Experiencing many of the FW issues others have with this model of iMac. But on e that is very strange is that it seems to be zapping and rendering useless the FW on external devices.
We had a functioning DV deck that can no longer connect by FW to ANY computer (not just aluminum iMacs), a brand new g-tech drive whose FW never worked (not 100% sure it's the drive, but things seem to be adding up), and now a brand new HV30 camcorder that was able to capture to one of the iMacs, but now cannot and can't connect to the iMac or a MBP (i know about canon cams and FW).
It seems as though the bad FW connection on the iMacs is frying the FW ports on the other deviecs.
Is this possible? has anyone heard of this happeneing?

"you mean i should always power down device AND computer before disconnecting devices?"
It is not necessary to power down the your computer before disconnecting a firewire device. What is necessary is to make sure that if it is mounted, to dismount the device before disconnecting it. Firewire is completely hot swappable which is one of the advantages of it over older technologies like SCSI.
by the way, what is the "normal firewire issue with iMacs" that you refer to. I have 5 iMac's of varying age. 2006,2007 and 2008 models, 20" and 24", all of them have multiple firewire devices connected to them and I have never had any problems with my firewire ports. Maybe I am just lucky!!

  • I have a mac os 10.5.8, i want to upgrade to mac os snow leopard, can i keep all my files (documents, music on itunes) without backing up all the files first on a external device prior to the upgrade?

    I have a mac os 10.5.8, i want to upgrade to mac os snow leopard, can i keep all my files (documents, music on itunes) without backing up all the files first on a external device prior to the upgrade?

    I strongly advise against upgrading the OS without first making a backup. Were something to go wrong you would lose all your files without the backup. See:
    How to Install OS X Updates Successfully
    A. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions:
    Boot from your current OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. Then select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer. Now restart normally.
    If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior (4.0 for Tiger) and/or TechTool Pro (4.5.2 for Tiger) to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
    B. Make a Bootable Backup Using Restore Option of Disk Utility:
    Open Disk Utility from the Utilities folder.
    Select the destination volume from the left side list.
    Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
    Check the box labeled Erase destination.
    Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag it to the Destination entry field.
    Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to the Source entry field.
    Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
    Destination means the external backup drive. Source means the internal startup drive.
    C. Important: Please read before installing:
    If you have a FireWire hard drive connected, disconnect it before installing the update unless you will boot from this drive and install the update on it. Reconnect it and turn it back on after installation is complete and you've restarted.
    You may experience unexpected results if you have installed third-party system software modifications, or if you have modified the operating system through other means. (This does not apply to normal application software installation.)
    The installation process should not be interrupted. If a power outage or other interruption occurs during installation, use the standalone installer (see below) from Apple Downloads to update.  While the installation is in progress do not use the computer.
    D. To upgrade:
    Purchase the Snow Leopard Retail DVD.
    Boot From The OS X Installer Disc:
    Insert OS X Installer Disc into the optical drive.
    Restart the computer.
    Immediately after the chime press and hold down the "C" key.
    Release the key when the spinning gear below the dark gray Apple logo appears.
    Wait for installer to finish loading.
    E. If updating:
    Download and install update(s)
    Use Software Update, or
    Download standalone updater(s).

  • HT5953 How can I move my books from the ibook store to my Android device? I bought the book, so I have every right to move it as I see fit!

    The new Ibooks on Mac computers is about the worst thing to happen to Apple in a long time. I bought a book from the Ibook store, and I want to move it to my adnroid device. The thing is refusing to let me move my purchase. I mean, I used my money to purchase a BOOK. How does it make sense that I am limited in the movement of my book, somethng I purchased with my money? Can someone PLEASE explain how that is possible?

    First of all, you posted in completely the wrong section.
    It says right on the purchase page that you need an iOS device.
    The publishers want restrictions on what devices can read the books to make sure everyone pays.
    In any case, if you ask google there are lots of converters such as Epubsoft Ebook Converter
    I have never used it myself though.

  • I can't receive iCloud mail on the web or any of my devices

    I have had an iCloud account since the early .mac days. Two days ago, all of the unread mail in my inbox disappeared from my iPhone 5S, iMac, MacBook Air, and even the iCloud website, and I have not received any mail on this account since.  None of the troubleshooting has worked. I do still have unread mail that I have placed in files other than my inbox, and can SEND from the account, but something is seriously wrong here. Where are my lost unread messages, and why am I not receiving mail? Any ideas?

    Hi ..
    Reset the device:
    Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button together for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    If that doesn't help, tap Settings > General > Reset > Reset All Settings
    If that doesn't help, tap Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings
    You may have to re enter your Wi-Fi password.
    If nothing above has helped, try here >  iOS: Troubleshooting Wi-Fi networks and connections
    No data is lost due to a reset.

  • Can I run Snow Leopard on my iMac + OS 10.4 as startup on external FW HD?

    My iMac is running Snow Leopard.
    I want to install OS 10.4 on an external FW HD and use that drive as startup to run older mac software (Canvas, etc.)
    Can I do this? How? Snow Leopard won't let me install an older version of OS.
    Thanks

    Can I do this?
    Only if your computer shipped with Mac OS X 10.4. Use the 10.4 package that shipped with it.
    How?
    Install it normally, considering the point above.
    Snow Leopard won't let me install an older version of OS.
    It's not Snow Leopard that won't let you. It's the computer itself.

  • We have an iphone and 2 ipods that all use the same icloud. How can I get it to where the messages and contacts from each device are not shared

    My husband is getting all of my childrens messages on his phone. How can I change that or does he need his own apple ID? If so do we need to rest his phone to register it under him?

    Yes he would need his own apple id for imessage/facetime and icloud.
    In the meantime on his device go to settings - message - send&receive - remove the shared apple id.

  • Can I edit FCE projects when the files are on a External HD?

    Hello,
    I've recently reinstalled Snow Leopard. Since I have a clean start, I'm thinking about new ways to manage my video files for FCE editing.
    Video projects take up most of the space on my HD, so I'd like to keep them on an external drive this time.
    Is working on FCE projects while all the video files are saved on an external drive a bad idea? Or will this work out just fine? This way I don't have to first save them to my internal HD, finish the project, move video files to the external HD, and point FCE to where they're saved again. There just on the external HD from the start and while I'm editing the video! I can get a HD with firewire too.
    Thanks.

    Not at all. This is the correct way to work with a laptop.

  • When setting the midi port for an external device, how do I stop this altering the port setting for a separate external device?

    I am using Logic Pro 9.1.7.
    I have an EMU sampler set to port D.
    And a Roland JV 2080 set to port B.
    The ports refer to an external M-Audio Midisport midi interface.
    When creating a new track (brand new, not as a duplicate of another) for sounds from the Roland and setting port B in the Inspector, I find this affects certain existing tracks set to port D that are using sounds from the EMU.  The latter tracks are converted to port B.  I note that only some, not all, tracks are affected.
    If I try to change the EMU tracks back to port D, then the Roland track also switches to port D!  And so on...
    Each device has a 16-channel "instrument" in the Environment (but no virtual wiring anywhere).
    Usually, setting channels, banks and programs in the Event List for each track has been able to make things work reasonably well.
    Any suggestions that I could explore would be welcome.  Thanks.

    I haven't checked this with instrument tracks, could it possibly be you have somehow de-selected Universal Track Mode in Preferences/Audio?  It should be enabled.

  • HT5364 How to optimize the dictation feature using an external device. For example using the audio from iPod to dictate into word.

    iPad runs an entirely different opreating system.    How it handles dictation doesn't affect how your MacBook Pro handles it.   To solve at least the iPad, post here:

    Is your dictation problem with Mac OS X 10.9.2 on your MacBook Pro as well?  If it is, I'll request this thread be moved to the 10.9 forum where more people have experience with 10.9.

  • Satellite P100: USB/Fire-Wire ports not charging external device

    When I plug my ipod into either my 4 pin fire-wire port or a USB port on my laptop (satellite P100) it fails to charge, even when plugged in to the mains/ A/C power. I think I have found where I need to go in 'control panel' but need help on how to allow my fire-wire and USB ports to give out power and charge my ipod when its connected.
    Any help on this matter will be greatly appreciated.
    Cheers

    Hi
    The USB ports provide automatically the power. Usually every USB port provides about 500mA.
    But please note; the notebook must run and the external USB device (iPod) must be recognized by Windows OS!
    I dont know if the iPod was recognized by WinOS but I have read the many users have problems with the iPod installation on Windows OS. As far as I know the iTunes must be installed if you want to use the iPod.
    Greetings

  • How to detect if my external device is connected to the Serial port

    Hi,
    If I remove the cable from the serial port in my pc or either remove the serial cable from my external device, then when I send a request to open the serial port from my program, it basically does nothing, it just sits there.
    I want to be able to show some sort of message or any other way of indicating to the user that they should check the cable.
    below is the bit of code to open and set serial port params:
         public void openPort() {
              // Initialise the drivers
              System.setSecurityManager(null);
              String driverName = "com.sun.comm.Win32Driver";

              } catch (Exception e2) {
                   e2.printStackTrace();
              // port will be set in Store Operations.
              String wantedPortName = Configuration
                        .getParameter(ConfigSetting.EFT_COM_PORT);
              //System.out.println("wantedPortname : " + wantedPortName);
              Enumeration portIdentifiers = CommPortIdentifier.getPortIdentifiers();
              CommPortIdentifier portId = null; // will be set if port found
              while (portIdentifiers.hasMoreElements()) {
                   System.out.println("counter");
                   CommPortIdentifier pid = (CommPortIdentifier) portIdentifiers
                             .nextElement();
                   System.out.println(pid.getName());
                   if (pid.getPortType() == CommPortIdentifier.PORT_SERIAL
                             && pid.getName().equals(wantedPortName)) {
                        portId = pid;
                        System.out.println("found a macth");

    I just purchased iPhoto 11 for my MacBook running Lion OS. I can't seem to sync all the Photo Streams from my iOS6 devices to my MacBook. I need more than 30 days.

    You need to open iMovie and it will have a event library called iPhoto Videos, click on that and the videos will load in the window next to it, then you make a new project in iMovie.  Then open iDVD and make a new project then import the movies to the program then burn to a DVD..

  • Is the recovery from external device possible?

    Hi @all,
    I have a Satellite M30x-134. My DVD drive damaged an now my question:
    How can I recover my system (Windows xp) with a damaged internal drive?
    Is it possible from an external dvd drive via USB or from an USB stick?
    Can you tell me the settings for this procedure?
    Many, many thanks and greetings,
    Egge

    Theoretically it is possible but not so easy to do. USB option will not work. What you can try is to use external CD/DVD drive but it will not work so easy. The reason is that this external device will not be recognized automatically.
    I didnt try it but I am pretty sure you must start your notebook with start disc in DOS mode, load DOS driver for this external device to have access to it and as last step start recovery installation.
    It is pretty complicated.
    Better solution for you is to check eBay, buy new optical disc drive and be happy with well working notebook.
