  • Can I boot up a Tiger Disk IMage HDD using my Macbook Pro (with Leopard)

Before my Ibook G4 crashed (tiger 10.4) I made a disk image using super duper. I purchased a Macbook Pro (leopard) and when I tried booting the disk Image I had made using superduper on a smart disk firewire drive, it would not recognize it.
I held the option key when booting but only the Mac drive on the Macbook pro showed up. Is that a bug/flaw with leopard that you can't even boot an external HD disk image made using Tiger?
I know the disk image is good because it boots on my G5 which has tiger installed.
    Thanks for a reply..

    Allan Eckert and BCC99,
Thanks for the responses. I REALLY appreciate it becuase I usually spend a lot of time spinning my wheels trying to make something work that doesn't.
The reason I wanted to boot it was that my old IBOOK crashed and I wanted to boot up the old "clone" (not disk image - my poor choice of words) so that I could view some of my older emails that contained information that I wanted to view. I know I could do it on my G5 but I wasn't home and wanted to try my new Macbook.....

  • No longer can make disk images

I have created a stack of DVDs at our school, transferred from VHS of our student productions through the years. I was using Disk Utility to make additional copies of each DVD after transferring from VHS.
After making about 30 copies, now I am unable to make a disk image. I have tried 5 different disks and after working on it for about 20 minutes, it says "cannot create disk image - input/output error."
Have I copied my limit of disks? I still have 42G remaining on this Mac.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

    Try moving:
    Home > Library > Preferences > com.apple.DiskUtility.plist
to the desktop and restart your computer. This file saves the settings for that service and may be come corrupt. Removing it from the Preferences folder will result in a new file being created with default settings. If this helps you can trash the file but you may need to reset other things covered by that preference. If it doesn't help you can replace the newly created file with the old one and restart to regain the old settings.
Is this an internal or external drive you are using? Will it work with a disc you have already successfully transferred? Do you have a drive cleaner just to make sure it isn't a dust bunny? Let the drive rest for a while just to make sure it isn't overheating and warping or something strange?

  • TM automatically ejects backup disk image when using Airport network disk?

I finally got TM functioning using an external HD connected to my AEBS network. It creates a sparsebundle on the external HD which turns into a disk image on the computer whenever it is backing up or I launch TM. On my wife's MacBook, the disk image automatically disappears after TM has backed up or I quit the application. On my MacBook (about a year older), the disk image stays there. When I try to eject it manually, sometimes it says it is still being used and takes a while before it disappears, but other times it goes away immediately. Why does this happen automatically on my wife's computer but not on mine. Same OS - 10.5.4. This is not a big issue, but it is a nagging one. Any insight would be appreciated.

I tried to start the backup again, after logging out and back in again (as I had done several times before), but this time the sparsebundle loaded ok and the backup started properly.
So there's no need for anyone to spend any time on me.

  • How can I use my Mac G3 (OS 9.2.2) to make Windows disk images and compress them into Windows stuffed archives?

I have a collection of old Windows diskettes, 800 K and 1.4 MB.  I want to make disk images (or whatever is the Windows equivalent) and compress them into Windows stuffed archives.  I want Windows users to be able to download them, expand the stuffed archives, extract the disk images, and use the softsare on old Windows computers.  I need to do the work on a Power Macintosh beige G3 Tower using OS 9.2.2.  What software can I get to do it?

    To Jan, Greetings
Thank you for your message and for your suggestions.
Is WinZip a Mac application that makes compressed files that can be opened on a Windows computer?  If so, then do you have any notion where I could find a version old enough to run on OS 9.2.2?
I noticed that DropStuff 6.0, which I use on my G3 Tower, has an option to make compressed files that are self-extracting on Windows.  Do you know if that works?  I suppose that I could make such a file and then find somebody with a Windows computer to test if for me.
Yes, I could (shudder) get an old Windows computer somewhere, learn to use it, and do the project that way.  Do you know if the old versions of Windows include disk image programs and file compression  programs?  Or, would I need to buy some old software?
Thank you for the information about the size of the diskettes.  As you've probably noticed, I don't know very much about Windows things.
    Sincerely,

  • Disk Utility Problems - Can't make image or restore

I am having difficulty in making disk images & restoring using disk utility.
Issue 1 - Making an image of a DVD for the purpose of burning a copy (non commercial)
In DU I select the DVD in the sidebar, click new image DVD/CD master & save to desktop. The progress indicator reached about halfway & I get the following message: Unable to create "image name.cdr" - input/output error.
The source DVD in in the internal optical drive.
What causes this problem & can it be fixed? Why is the image .cdr not .dmg?
Can an image be made directly from a DVD?
As a workaround I used DU's restore function to copy the entire DVD contents to a free (27GB) partition on an internal HDD (not system disk) in the hope that I could make an image fron there. As soon as I clicked on restore both the DVD & target drive unmounted. After the progress bar reached 100% I got the following error message: Restore Failure. An error (5) occurred while copying. Input/output error
However if mounted in DU the partition has been renamed to the DVD name & the contents seem to be the same as the DVD.
    What is error 5?
I then created an image from this partition using DVD/CD-R master format which worked OK but created a 27GB image - too large to burn!
How can I make the image small enough to fit on a DVD-R?
Can an image be made directly from a DVD?
    Is this normal DU behaviour??
Once I get this right I plan to used DU to backup to an external HDD (I'm in the process of recovering from a drive failure and although I have most of my data back through partial backups & recovery like many before me I'm going to have better backups from now on!!)
    Any help would be apprecialted.
    Thanks in advance.

It may be the the disc after all...
I'm still having the same problem, but I also discovered that I cannot get the install disc to get past the "spinning gear" stage when trying to start up with it, so yes, it's most definitely useless! My MacBook is still under warranty so I phoned Apple, and explained the problem and everything I did to ensure it wasn't hardware related. So they're sending me new install discs. I'm not 100% convinced yet that the problem is the install disc, but we'll see...my only doubt remains from the fact that I was able to make a disc image of it on my G4. That said...
I did a hardware test (long version, and everything is reportedly fine), played dvd movies, burned cd's, installed software from discs, etc, and it seems the drive is working fine, however, it could possibly be sensitive to even the slightest smudge or scratch (the install disc has a few very slight marks on it that shouldn't be a problem, and I cleaned it thoroughly). The only other time I had a problem was when I went to rip a song from a cd to iTunes where it hung and and then failed to complete the task. (The cd itself played without issue though.) I checked it for dirt/scratches: it had a couple of barely imperceptible smudges and one shallow scratch. I cleaned it, tried it again and iTunes was able to import from it after that. This remains the only time (so far) I've had a problem with a disc besides my install disc.
I want to be able to repair disk before I install 10.5.3, and back up everything, including the install discs. My Macbook came with 10.5.2 and except for this problem, everything's been working fine.
When I get my new install discs, I'll post how that went. They should arrive within a week or so.
DrHouseTF: I checked out your thread. I've never tried to make copies of game disks via DU, but maybe it's due to copy protection measures on the disc itself?

  • Multiplexer Error on a 8GB disk burn or Disk image, iDVD

    Burning 4.5GB DVDs burns fine.
While trying to burn a 8GB DVD or creating a disk image on iDVD I receive a "Multiplexer Error".
Another time, it burned and with about 3 minutes left the disk popped out of the computer although on the computer it appeared to still be burning.  When I put this disk in a DVD player the chapter titles are mixed up with the actual video that plays and the same video is played over various chapters.
I tried changing the burning speed to 2X and tried using an external DVD burner.
    Would appreciate any ideas!
    Thanks

Sorry that I can not make a shorter answer !
    Hi
Multiplexing error is a very complex problem due to many things (long long list following) - one common but not obvious reason is that material on the iDVD menu goes outside the TV-Safe area (or just touching it).
So first - turn on TV-Safe area and move any object well inside of this.
Wide screen stretched - usually (as I think) it is due to making a 4x3 movie in a 16x9 wide-screen project OR the other way around. This forces one to on flat-screen TV (or other) set the presenting view right - My has 4x3, wide-screen, zoom and auto-wide-screen and I have to switch this by my remote for some DVD I've made "wrong" way.
Now my long long list on Multiplex Error

Audio - .aiff (as on audio-CDs) (else converted to this .aiff 48KHz)

    Chapters !
    A.    Using strange letters in video project name e.g. +,/; etc. keep to a-z and 0-9 strange letters in project name e.g. +
as described by Donnyboy69.  Does the title of your project have any symbols or decimal points in it. If so, that is why you are getting the error. I had a project that had a + sign which caused the same problem. I renamed it without the symbol and low and behold, it worked.
    B.    Location of Chapters
Can’t be at start or end of movie (Skip first/start one - iDVD sets this by it self. At the End - no need)

    Chuck, Chicago 2/7/2009.
Back again. Here is what I have found to work. I also have and use a LaCie DVD-R/RW DL external drive and a LaCie external hard drive as well. Since yesterday I have tried a few ways to burn a themed iDVD project having four 56 minute movies on it, amounting to 226 minutes onto a DVD DL disc, capacity 240 minutes. Apple tech support really didn't know what to do but gave me a very good tip. I had two options left. Apple tech support's tip was to try disc image. One of the replies on a thread with this subject said not to, but my experience today is good. Put your project onto "Burn to disc image," under "iDVD, file." Yesterday encoding took me 23 1/2 hours. Overnight for iDVD disc image, encoding took 21 1/2 hours (again) while I slept. This morning I tried to copy/burn disc image to a DVD with Roxio Toast 7, and it stopped near the end of the burn with some kind of "error" message. So then I tried Utilities> Disc Utility> Burn icon, and followed it through. Be sure to click the DVD DL drive in the window "Burn disc in.". I had one other problem though. At the end of a 46 minute copy, it started to verify, and at the end of verify it rejected the burn. So I tried again, and when "verify" appeared, I clicked on "Skip." The disc finished burning and is doing fine and well. A long and tortuous process, but at last something works. I made several additional copies using Disc Utility. Best wishes. Chuck, Chicago.
    2. Disconnect any other external devices not absolutely needed.

FROM Bev. (Not a 'guy' but I will answer!)
First, I do not think that mixing wide-screen and standard makes a difference in iDVD.
Second, you should use a better brand of DVD disk. Also, many of us have experienced fewer problems on playback with DVD-R disks. Recommended brands here are Verbatim, Maxell and Taiyo Yuden. Memorex and TDK are not consistent and may not give you a correct burn. They apparently have fewer layers in the composition of the disk. I have always used Verbatim DVD-R disks and have not had any burn problems.
Also, choose a slower burn speed, 4x or less.
Third, to determine if the iDVD project will burn properly, create a disk image file (from within iDVD, go File->Save as Disk Image) and test it. Mount the disk image and then open DVD Player (in Applications) and view your project. If it plays correctly, you can then burn the actual DVD disk from the disk image file using Disk Utility.

I did everything I've seen suggested, but a friend (who used to be an Apple Genius) suggested that I do a safe reboot (by holding down the shift key until you see the spinning gear on gray background, then release, then restart when your start-up screen appears).
It worked, and I got a clean burn from iDVD.
Hopefully this can help other people.

Well, I finally got it, and it was odd enough to post here incase anyone looks this topic up again. Many things were tried, including burning the unedited film, the edited film without titles and chapter markers, abbreviating the chapter markers in case length was the issue (remember the old iMovie used to truncate them when moving to iDVD?). In the process, I noticed that one, and only one, chapter marker was on the same line as the title marker. All the others were on the line above. The only way I seemed able to change that was to clip a few seconds of film. After that last clip, the offending marker took a place on the line above, as were all the others. That run published, compiled completely and burned. That's one for the books.
    One user more writes
To add my experience with Multiplex Errors using iDVD (7.0.4), I recently created two iDVD projects
Video from both passed from FCE 4.01 with chapters
One project worked fine in creating disk image file
    The other gave Multiplex Errors
I tried suggestions to remove special characters and no chapter marks at beginning, but nothing worked
Note that I've used iDVD for dozens of projects and this is first time I've run into Multiplex Errors
Anyway, for problem project, I tried an experiment where I removed all chapters in FCE and passed to new iDVD project
    This time multiplex errors gone
So had something to do with chapters
So now I tried numerous experiments to remove individual chapters and try again creating disk image with new iDVD project
After numerous tries, I was able to narrow problem down to 1 "Bad" chapter mark
That is, when I left the "bad" chapter in my FCE project and passed to iDVD, iDVD gave multiplex error
When I removed "bad" chapter mark (and others in), no multiplex error
As a final experiment, I moved "bad" chapter mark about 5-10 sec's beyond original point and passed to iDVD, the multiplex errors now magically went away and I was able to finally create my disk image.
I have no idea why this worked, but thought I'd mention here in case someone else runs into similar problem.

In addition to Bengt's fine advice, burning errors can occur if you have located any of your menu buttons wholly or partly outside of the safe TV viewing area. Go to your main project menu, then click on View/Show TV Safe Area, to check. Drag into the safe viewing area any buttons that are outside the safe viewing area.
    Russ One - suggest this
Multiplex Error-There was an error during muxing preparation
One thing that worked for me was to export the video w/o chapter markers as a self contained movie (thereby not loosing the edits & etc). Then make a new FCE project and import that movie into a new sequence and add the chapter markers. I've used "-", "&" and "," with no problem in the chapter names. Removing the markers or exporting without them did solve the problem but renaming them with just numbers 1,2,3....5, did not solve the problem and since this problem seems to happen with with iMovie as well, it would suggest the problem is in the video or audio and in combination with the chapter markers iDVD just can't handle it. The only other possibility is that both iMovie and FCE share the same or similar chapter marker code that some how is corrupting the markers.
    Summary - What to try
    1. Chapters
Only A to Z and 0 to 9 in chapter title
No Chapter mark at very beginning of movie
No Chapter mark in or within 2 seconds from any transition in movie
    2. TV-safe area for buttons (no one outside this)
    3. Safe re-boot
    4. No other external devices connected - that are not needed
    SDMacuser adds to this
On #4 ... No ext. devices. Some think this applies mainly to ext. FW. Not the case. Also applies to ext. USB2 as well (not to mention flash drives too).
Do not leave 3rd party devices / camera / camcorder plugged in unless it is being used with iDvd's One Step process. Certain web cams can trigger this also (especially ones with added features like LED light/s that draw additional power from the FW or USB bus).
    5. Minimum of 25Gb free space on Start-up hard disk
    6. Make a DiskImage first - reduces where problem originates
    7. Trash iDVD pref. file
    8. Make a new iDVD project
    9. Movies in project with same aspect ratio e.g. 4x3 or 16x9
    10. No other programs/applications running during iDVD process. e.g. Internet, screen & energy savers

I've made literally hundreds of DVD's using iDVD and I occasionally get the dreaded "Multiplex Error". In the past changing the position of chapter markers has worked, but sometimes the only way I can get the DVD to burn is to remove all the chapter markers (not a great solution).
Recently, I've discovered a bug in iDVD that creates the "Muliplex Error" message and it may be the cause of some of my previous problems. Sometimes when you export a movie to iDVD with chapters, it will create chapter menus with incredibly long playing times. My most recent "Multiplex Error" project had two chapter menus. I have a 38 second audio clip that I use for my DVD menus and the first menu showed the correct time of 38 seconds (select View>Show Inspector). The second menu with the same audio clip showed 13 minutes and 42 seconds! When I went to the Project Info window (select Project>Project Info) it now showed the total size of my DVD as 4.8 GB, too big for iDVD to encode. So, I manually adjusted the time of the second menu to 38 seconds. This time without changing anything else, iDVD  burned the disk perfectly.
The interesting thing is that when I began the burn, the project info showed under 4GB for my disk. So, from now on I'll check the playing times of each menu before I burn.

  • Encrypted, sparse disk image stored on WebDAV server: problems mounting

My goal is to have secure, encrypted storage to back up my computer to a remote site. The remote site is an internet hosting provider who provides a lot of disk space and bandwidth, and also serves up WebDAV, for a very small price.
I have created a 100GB sparse disk image, with encryption, and stored it on the remote server. I then mount the directory containing the sparseimage (which is itself password protected using .htaccess) using WebDAV. My plan is now to mount the disk image, and use rsync to copy changes on my computer to the disk image.
This worked perfectly when I tested with a small sparseimage. It was interesting how the OS seems to buffer the changes in chunks: rsync appears to be copying a lot of files super fast, then it stalls as network bandwith suddenly throttles up for a while, and they take turns this way.
Unfortunately, after copying a few hundred MBs into the image, I am now having trouble.
First, when I try to mount the disk image, I see an enormous amount of data start transferring over the network. It literally saturates my broadband connection for at least an hour (I haven't been able to go longer yet). It seems to first download at top speed for a while, then switches to uploading at top speed for awhile. During this time, I notice that a mount_webdav process is consuming large perentages of CPU. However I can't see anything else going on at this point -- the disk image isn't mounted yet, all this thrashing seems to be from the process of the image trying to mount.
So first question: is this normal? Does anyonw know what actually happens when you issue "hdiutil attach" on encrypted sparse images? Does it have to touch and read through everything in the image once or twice? Maybe this is just a Bad Idea™
Second: the webdav server always ends up getting disconnected during this process before the image actually gets mounted. Do you think I'm trying to do something that tests, and exceeds, the limits of WebDAV?
Thanks a million for any help!

A follow up to my MS word document. I found that I created the file in MS word 2000, and I used the Apple File Security for OS 9 to encrypt it. I can't remember the password, and I do not find anything in the key chain listing.
I have Pages 08, but I don't think I can use it if I can't remember the password to unlock this old document. Is there a program to decrypt this without a password?

  • How do I create a start-up disk image without restarting from the Install DVD?

(I know this is not MacBook Pro question per se, but I can't find a software discussion this applies to.)
    Situation:
My MBP is running, but it's acting up and Onyx tells me that the start-up volume needs repair and directs me to use Disk Utility.
But to repair a volume using Disk Utility, you must restart from the original Install DVD (or some other start-up volume).
But although the MBP will read my old Leopard Install DVD and the Install DVD that came with my MBP, it refuses to restart from either of them. (Trying to do so gets as far as the Apple logo on a gray screen and then hangs there; all disk activity ceases.)
    Question:
How can I (is it even possible to) create a start-up volume on my external FW drive without starting my MBP from a DVD?
In other words, is there a way to either:
    a) create a disk image from the Install DVD on my external FW drive and then designate that disk image as my start-up drive?
    OR
    b) create a disk image on my MBP's internal drive that I can then use to run a System Install on my external drive?
(BTW, I know I can create disk images using Disk Utility, but it offers many options for type, compression, etc., that are beyond me. )
Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

OS X Lion includes a new feature called Lion Recovery that includes all of the tools you need to reinstall Lion, repair your disk, and even restore from a Time Machine backup without the need for optical discs.
Restart your Mac holding down the Command-R to enter the Recovery HD.
From there you can use Disk Utilty.

  • Windows 8.1 Disk Image

I am trying to use one of my Server drives to store Disk Images from Windows 8.1 computers. When I try to add another disk image from another computer to the same location a prompt warns that only one disk image can be saved to this location. My question
is can I copy more than one Image to the WindowsImageBackup folder since Windows creates a separate folder for each PC's image inside the WindowsImageBackup folder?
    Tech Addiction

Multiple images are accommodated by renaming the next node (\computername\) to append the date and time pulled from the \Backup folder in the next node after that node.
    see :
    http://www.sevenforums.com/backup-restore/202848-system-image-bat-script-allow-multiple-images-windowsimagebackup.html
Hence, the original Windows 8.1 folder naming convention such as: drive:\WindowsImageBackup\test_computer\Backup2013-10-15...
would become (propogating the date/time part to the prior directory node name): drive:\WindowsImageBackup\test_computer_2013-10-15_12\Backup2013-10-15...

  • Hard Drive and Disk Image not mounting

    Hey everyone,
I'm running a G5 Dual 2Ghz. with OSX 10.5.8 I'm having problems with a back up hard drive. It is an external Western Digital My Book 1.5TB SATA drive. After using it for a few months, it suddenly did not mount anymore.
*1) It also would not appear in Disk Utility.*
    a) Disk Warrior couldn't find the drive (I think because it's formatted with FAT32)
*2) I then took the drive out of the enclosure and put it in the spare bay in the G5.*
    a) It didn't mount
    b) It did show up in Disk Utility
    c) In Disk Utility it wouldn't give me the option to Repair Disk Permissions or Repair Disk
    d) In Disk Utility is says under Partition Scheme: Unformatted
    e) In Disk Utility I don't have the option to mount/eject only gives me the "info" option
    f) Tech Tool did find the drive and it passed all tests
    g) Disk Warrior still did not find the drive
    h) TestDisk finds the drive, but does not find any partitions
*3) I then created a disk image of the drive in Disk Utility onto an external hard drive. The image comes back at 320GB, which seems to be about right I think.*
    a) The disk image would not mount with Disk Image Mounter. It would say there is an Unrecognized File System
    b) In Disk Utility - I don't have the option to Repair Disk Permissions
    c) In Disk Utility - When trying to Repair Disk - I get the error: Repairing Disk failed with error Unrecognized FileSystem

I'm running very low on ideas. I know I could just erase the drive and reformat it, but the files on it are very important and must be recovered.
Any help or suggestions would be very helpful. I will not have time until after the weekend to try more things. Thanks in advance if you do not hear back from me until after this weekend.

Yes, it will. But if DU says the disk is unformatted then it is also not accessible. If you have files you don't wish to lose then you will need to try recovery software:
    Basics of File Recovery
    General File Recovery
If you stop using the drive it's possible to recover deleted files that have not been overwritten by using recovery software such as Data Rescue II, File Salvage or TechTool Pro. Each of the preceding come on bootable CDs to enable usage without risk of writing more data to the hard drive.
The longer the hard drive remains in use and data are written to it, the greater the risk your deleted files will be overwritten.

  • Disk Utility Error 61 when attempting to create disk image on external driv

I would like to make occasional archive backups of my three macintosh computers. I bought a new Western Digital 2TB drive for this purpose, and formatted it as Mac OS Extended. Trying to do a disk image backup using Disk Utility, I follow the directions:
    - Startup from an install DVD.
    - Start Disk Utilities and select "Restore"
    - Drag "Macintosh HD" into the Source box
    - Click on "New Image" and select compressed and 128-bit AES encryption
This leads to the error message: Unable to create "....." (error -61)
I have enocountered this problem both with my iMac G5 and a MacBook, both running Leopard.
Does anyone know what this error means, what I am doing wrong, and/or if there is another way to create disk image backups? Help!

    1. For reasons I don't know disc images seem to become more fragile the larger they get. They also can be subject to file corruption that affects the entire disc image, whereas file corruption on a clone would only affect certain files.
    2. You cannot put multiple clones on the same volume. Each clone must be on a separate volume, but you can have multiple volumes on a single drive simply by partitioning the drive accordingly. Of course you need a drive large enough to accommodate each clone. Each clone should be to a space equal to the capacity of the cloned drive.
    3. I'm not a big fan of TM, although I must confess it has become more reliable since it's release, especially with Snow Leopard. However, there are many backup utilities that can create clones, perform incremental updates, and archive changed files. See the following:

  • Best Settings for making a Secure, Reliable Disk Image?

    Hi guys!
Can anybody direct me to the best settings that can be used to make a secure Disk image using the MacOS X disc utility?
I wish to make my computer family friendly, yet keep my proffessional and private files secure/private and innaccesible to children and unautorized individuals. I have heard that files saved inside encrypted images (password protected) are also not indexed in the finder wich is perfect for the privacy I seek (this is true right?).
I know how to access the tools, but the right settings for making a trustworthy image remain elusive. Already tried with some of the formats and information placed inside...started becoming glitchy and unreliable, even after removing the files and making them unencrypted again.I'm abaout to try with the HFS+ format.
I cannot lose the files I wish to protect. But I need to secure them and if anything, be capable of backing up the image by copying it into a HFS+ formated external hard drive every once in a while. Can this be done?
Is there a risk of data loss in the encryption process? One of my external drives (FAT 32) even started to make unrelated neighboring folders "disappear" after making an image inside ( I though I could make an image anywhere and save stuff securely at that point...but nearly losing the entire cashe of info made me backtrack and simply avoid the process until i'm sure of what I'm setting up---so many compatibility problems!)
    • Don't know what settings to use.
    • Some say there is a small chance of a disk image being damaged or corrupted (for no reason whatsoever)...but having trouble right off the bat, with a brand new image worries me. WHAT ARE THE RISKS? Is the system unrefined and unrealiable?
I plan to make the Image a sparse file, using the HMS+ format, 400GB....regular encryption. I plan to copy all my sensitive stuff inside and delete unprotected copies. Risky? Are images unreliable in general? or where my glitches abnormalities?---Can the images hold collections of files or do they become more unrealiable the bigger they get (what I fear). I don't wan't to have to make dozens of images to protect my files.
Can a external drive be formated to HMS+ and accept  a drag and dropped copy of a 400GB image? FAT32 will just not accept it. Would there be risk of the image being damaged in the transfer? NOTE that copying the data into an external drive would be to have a secure backup of the data. If I can't trust the backup to be carbon copy intact...it isn't a backup.
Securing files is really proving to be bothersome, despite having "refined" tools at my disposal.
    Thanks for your help!

Do you place your backups on external disks? Are your external disks formatted HFS+?
Can HFS+ Disk image be Drag dropped into a HFS+ formatted external disk in order to copy them? or is the process blocked like what happens to large Disk images in FAT 32?
I'm trying to lock on to the right format to apply to everything. My steps will be:
Make the image: So far a sparse image in HFS+ format, 400 GB, No partition map.
Drag sensitive work to Disk image. Once transfer in complete delete originals.
Format an external disk into the journaled HFS+ format. Drag drop Secure disk image to back it up.
Do you see any problems with this process? Anything i'm missing?
