Can A DVD Burner Connected By USB 2.0 Install Leopard/SL ?

I am contemplating getting an external DVD drive to relieve the workload on my internal one.
I would also like it to be capable of working with an installation DVD in the event of my computer's DVD burner failing when I wanted to upgrade the OS in the future.
I know that a FireWire connected burner can do this, but can a USB 2.0 also do it?

yes. a USB external DVD drive will work with any intel mac and let you boot from the SL install disk.

There are a number of posts related to copying issues between Windows Vista / 7 and AirPort Disks. Two potential solutions being forwarded are: 1) Changing the LAN Manager authentication level, and/or 2) Disabling the Windows Search feature.
To change the LAN Manager authentication level:
From the Windows Vista / 7 desktop, click Start
    Search for: security
    Click 'Local Security Policy'
Goto Local Policies > Security Options
Under Policy, double-click 'Network security: LAN Manager authentication level'
Change level to: Send LM & NTLM responses
Under Policy, double-click 'Network security: Minimum session security for NTLM SSP based (including RPC) clients'
    De-select 'Require 128-bit encryption'
    Click OK
     To disable Windows Search:
Start > Control Panel > Programs > Programs & Features
On the right-hand side, click "Turn Windows features on/off"
Scroll down, and de-select "Windows Search".
Press OK, close all windows and restart.
A third "solution," that has worked for me, is verify that both the AirPort base station and the Win7 PC are using the exact same Workgroup Name. In my case, I use "WORKGROUP" (without the quote marks) for this name. From the AirPort Utility, you would enter this value on the Disks > File Sharing tab. On Win7, Start > Control Panel > System and Security > System > Change Settings > Change > Workgroup

  • USB DVD Burner connected to Portege 3500 is not recognized properly

I am trying to connect an HP DVDv 940e DVD Burner to my Portege 3500.When I connect the device it is not recognized and the device manager list it as an unknown mass storage device without driver. Where can I get this driver?

the solution to the question is: find a computer which will accept the external burner, look what the driver for the mass storage device is called. in my case usbstor. search your computer for "usbstor". there should be at leat 3 different files (.sys .inf and another one),copy these onto your computer, and when you try to install the mass storage device in the device manager, direct the hardware assistant to these files. it should accept the driver it did with me. If there are more problems after that use the same method, find the working drivers on the other computer and copy all files of that name to your computer, showing the hardware assistant where to look.

  • Dm4-3050us - can the DVD burn DL discs?

I can't seem to verify if the DVD drive will burn DL discs, as there's no logo on the drive housing.  Can anyone verify this?
Or is "SuperMulti DVD burner" spec'd out somewhere?
    Thanks!

Hm, still not sure - the service manual from the dm4-3050us "manuals" webpage refers to a slot-load optical drive (PDF page 10/120).  This is clearly wrong as this laptop has the tray-eject-style drive.
    http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/manualCategory?product=5218478&cc=us&dlc=en&lc=en&jumpid=reg_r100...
So now I guess I'll just grab a DL disc and try to burn 5+GB of data onto it...

  • DVD tray opens on start up after installing Leopard

I installed Leopard on my Dual 800 G4 tower a few weeks ago. I used Leopard assist and everything went fine.
However, ever since the installation, the DVD tray opens every time I boot up.
It makes no difference whether the tray has anything in it or not, and the tray stays open until I push it shut. Moreover, the problem is not confined to Leopard. I have three hard drives running on a SATA PCI card. Two of these drives still run Tiger (10.4.11) and they have developed the same weird behaviour with the tray opening on start-up and staying open until I close it. If I leave the tray open and reboot, it will close momentarily but then re-open as it reboots.
Apart from being annoying, it also creates difficulties in booting from a DVD. Has anyone any ideas about how this happened and what can be done about it?

Tom, you are nothing short of a genius!
It was the mouse. The mouse is fine on my G5 tower and on my wife's emac, but, for some reason that is certainly not known to me, it did not agree with my G4.
Now, before I mark the question as "answered", do you have any idea at all as to why the mouse would make such a difference? (It is an aftermarket mouse from China that blends with my white keyboard, but I had no hassles with the microsoft mouse from the G5, so it can't just be that it is not an apple mouse.)
    Cheers
    Rob

  • Can't See Camera Connected via USB in CS2 Bridge

I've connected a Canon PowerShot (as previously) via a USB port. When I open "My PC' in WinXP, I see the Canon along with my other drives and can view the jpeg image files. When I navigate to "My PC" in CS2 Bridge, I can see all drives except the Canon. No idea why this should be so. Help!

    Hi again, John.
I'm feeling particularly dumb these days around PS. Hope you don't mind answering these Help Center questions (or directing me to a good resource).
OK, so I clicked on PS Help. This resulted in an Adobe Help tab appearing in the bottom bar next to the Adobe PS tab. The screen launched by the Help tab looks exactly like the standard PS screen except all options at the top are greyed out. If I click on Flie/Edit?etc, I'm returned to the standard screen (non-greyed out).
According to the official PS manual, I should see a Help Center window. I don't.
I'm stumped. I've used PCs for years and never had a problem with Help features. PS is the first.

  • T40/iPhone Syncing: "Device can run faster if connected to USB 2.0 port."

Each time I sync my iPhone 3G with the T40 (2373-73U), a baloon message appears saying the device will run faster if connected to a USB 2.0 port. I thought it was so connected. I've reviewed the ThinkPad article entitled "Troubleshooting USB Devices" as well as the Microsoft article kb/310575, "Advanced Troubleshooting Tips for General USB Problems in Windows XP." I use Windows XP Professional with SP3.  I confirm that BIOS is enabled for USB 2.0.  I saw something that said IRQ 11 is being used for the USB ports. Pursuing the baloon message, I'm told to unplug the device from the current port and plug it into one connected to the enabled USB 2.0 hub, showing six such ports. But my T40 has only two places in which to plug the iPhone USB cable, and neither will eliminate the message that things will work faster if I use another port. Can any one offer a suggestion?

  • External DVD/CD connection by USB

I don't have an iPad, but in considering a purchase, I am still mostly Windows based and just starting to shift into Mac, and iPod's along with opening an iTunes account.
-So most of my movies are still on actual hard disc...I have an external CD/DVD hard drive, would I be able to connect that to an iPad?
    -any other solutions...?

    Hi and welcome iguy909..
No USB support for the iPad, tech specs availble here.
    http://www.apple.com/ipad/specs/
The movies need to be in your iTunes library in order to "sync" to your iPad from your computer.
You may want to check out iPad Support here.

  • USB ports could not recognize DVD Burner and WD Portable disk

    Hello all,
This is my first question to ask here about X1 Carbon. I hope you could help. I was trying to install a software using the Lenovo slim dvd burner, but the usb ports of the laptop didn't recognize it. Also, I tired to install the software using my portable HDD (Western Digital A08 Elements), but the usb ports of the laptop didn't recognize it as well. I plugged a usb thumb driver into the usb ports; it did recognize it!!! But I really need my dvd burner to be detected. I will appreciate if you could suggest an appropriate solution to my problem.
    Thank you

  • How can I work around a DVD burning problem

Steve Grisetti: How can I work around a DVD burning problem?
Question: Does PSE and PE -7 solve this problem or make any difference at all?
    Joanna

This article, from the FAQ list at the top of this forum, is valid for all versions, since it may be a problem for any.
    http://www.adobeforums.com/webx/.59b5f52c
The problem is not so much with Premiere Elements as it is with challenges faces in the operating system registry. Basically, DVD burner programs, like Nero, which are installed on your computer at the factory, refuse to share access to the DVD burner with other programs.
