Can a G4 Desktop OS 8.6 be hooked up to cable modem high speed?

Can anyone help me set up my apple G4 desktop os 8.6 to work with a high speed cable modem to get internet access?

Hi Gepicou
In a word yes, your G4 will definitely support a high speed DSL connection - I'm writing to you on a 7300 powerPC mac I've just dusted off, sent to a repair shop where they set her up for my 512Ko line. I'm deep in the countryside so I don't get a powerful signal, but all is fine. The modem is a Thompson 510 (ethernet).
Normally I use my present Powerbook running on Panther, and since I'm going to England for work reasons, I'm leaving my partner with my old (and dear) Mac to use.
You could try the forum "Mac OS 10.3" > getting online - loads of folk there have used OS9 before, and have experience in newer connections that weren't really around when OS8 or 9 were still mainly in use.
Otherwise, if you get your running orders from that forum, take your G4 to a technician - mine configured the modem in 20 minutes, it cost me 20 euros...
Good luck!
Kathy

  • Can't connect iBook g3 300Mhz using os 8,6 to Cable modem

    I just bought an iBook 300Mhz clamshell running os 8.6. I haven't used anything under osx in a long time, but the interfaces look similar (modem, tcip/ip, that is). I need to know if the operating system is too old for advanced wireless router (netgear super g). I also have a 400Mhz G4 running osx 10.4 and it seems to run everything fine. Are there updates or patches that fix this problem or is there one tiny thing that I'm not doing? Your help would be greatly appriciated!

    Did you configure it as to be seen on this page

  • Airport Utility can't see all my devices after new cable modem

    Everything worked fine until I got a new cable modem from Comcast—it's a Cisco DPC3000. Now after firing that up, I can get to the web on my Mac Pro but my LAN seems to be missing. Airport Utility can see the AEBS (Base Station) that's connected to the cable modem but it can't see a second AEBS that's in my wife's office (wired to the Base Station in Bridge mode), or an Airport Express that's hooked up to my music system, or a second Airport Express that's used to extend the WIFI to a second bedroom. All these things worked fine previously—I could see them all in Airport Utility and I could access all those devices.
    Any ideas will be much appreciated—been dealing with this most of the day.
    Thanks
    Peter

    Well what do you know...after a week, it just magically decides to work, without even using Airport Utility.
    Boy are these Airports touchy....and unreliable.
    I still want to know: What makes these things drop in and out???

    Hi champrider,
    You can use an application such as Apple Remote Desktop to control your iMac remotely. See this article -

    Hello:
    Thank you for the update for remote access for desktops.
    Personally, I do not want to give remote access to anyone but myself as privacy is my friend.  Can this remote desktop software still be for me personally unless I allow access and for my MAC lap top only?  What if I do not update? I do use this lap top in other countries.  compatibility issues with what?

    Apple Remote Desktop is off be default. It has to be enabled for some one to be able to remotely connect to the computer. And then, you still have to have a user name and password on the computer to remotely connect with.
    If you want to see if remote access has is enabled for Apple Remote Desktop; you can find the setting in, Apple Menu, System Prefrences, Sharing. If it's enabled, Remote Management or Screen Sharing will be checked.
    Beucase Apple Remote Desktop Agent is part of the Mac Operating System; even if your not using it, Apple Software Updates will from time to time offer updates for ARD Agent. Software Updates can some times be stacked ontop of each other; so chosing not to install an update, can mean other updates you may want may not be offered. At least until you install the updates those updates require. Also software updates can improve the security of your computer.

    Have an IMac 7.1, desktop system 10.4.11, 2.8 GHz, 4MB, 4GB.  what can I upgrade to?  What do I need to buy and how high can I go?

    You can replace one of the 2 GB RAM sticks with a 4 GB stick for a total max. RAM of 6 GBs.
    Here are the specs.
    Maximum Memory
    6.0 GB (Actual) 4.0 GB (Apple)
    Memory Slots
    2 - 200-pin PC2-5300 (667MHz) DDR2 SO-DIMM
    Purchase reliable Mac RAM from online vendors Crucial or OWC (Other World Computing).
    The highest OS X version you can go is OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion.
    First, though, you need to purchase a retail disc version of OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard in order to download upgrade to OS X 10.8.
    Purchase OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard here.
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC573/mac-os-x-106-snow-leopard
    Use Software update, in OS X Preferences Pane to update to the latest version of OS X 10,6 Snow Leopard before upgrading OS to 10.8 Mountain Lion.
    OS X 10,6.8 will install the Mac App Store icon in OS X's Application Dock.
    From there, you can launch the Mac App Store and download and install OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion.
    Use Sofware Update again to update to the latest version of Mountain Lion.
    Be advised, you may want to play around in OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard before updating to OS X 10.8 Mt. Lion.
    Some users aren't happy with the Hybrid OS X/iOS functionality of OS X 10.8 Mounatin Lion.
    If you upgrade to OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion and aren't happy with it, the only way to return to OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard is wipe the internal drive, reformat it, then reinstall OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard.
    You might want to consider purchasing an external FireWire hard drive, format it so you can install OS X 10,6 Snow Leopard and all of its updates onto the internal drive, use a copying/cloning app like Carbon Copy Cloner or Super Duper to make a duplicate of your internal drive to the external FireWire drive as a backup that you can reinstall onto your internal drive just in case you find you are not happy with the look and functionality of OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion.
    Good Luck!

  • [Solved] wy i can place xfce4 desktop icons in a "grid" only?

    hello archers!
    im in love with xfce4 DE, but the annoying thing is that i can place the desktop icons only in a invisible "grid" of tiles.
    i changed the display manager to gdm, but it didn't help. i tryed changing the WM, but didn't not find out how to do that.
    Yes, i dont understand how DE's working internal, cause there are so many parts, as DM, WM, session-manager, and so on, which confuses me.
    So how i can place my icons individually on the desktop?
    Thanks in advance!!

    Another way to adjust the desktop grid size settings and more.

    If you're using the icon view, and would like to change how the text looks,
    you have three things you can change: the opacity (transparency) of the
    rounded text background, the color of the rounded text background, and the
    color of the text itself.
    You'd want to add something like this to your ~/.gtkrc-2.0 file:
    style "xfdesktop-icon-view" {
    XfdesktopIconView::label-alpha = 75
    XfdesktopIconView::selected-label-alpha = 100
    XfdesktopIconVIew::ellipsize-icon-labels = 1
    XfdesktopIconView::shadow-x-offset = 1
    XfdesktopIconView::shadow-y-offset = 1
    XfdesktopIconView::shadow-color = "#ff0000"
    XfdesktopIconView::selected-shadow-x-offset = 2
    XfdesktopIconView::selected-shadow-y-offset = 2
    XfdesktopIconView::selected-shadow-color = "#00ff00"
    XfdesktopIconVIew::cell-spacing = 6
    XfdesktopIconView::cell-padding = 6
    XfdesktopIconView::cell-text-width-proportion = 2.5
    base[NORMAL] = "#00ff00"
    base[SELECTED] = "#5050ff"
    base[ACTIVE] = "#0000ff"
    fg[NORMAL] = "#ff0000"
    fg[SELECTED] = "#ff0000"
    fg[ACTIVE] = "#ff0000"
    widget_class "*XfdesktopIconView*" style "xfdesktop-icon-view"
    The first three entries set the opacity of the rounded text background
    (allowed values are from 0 (totally transparent) to 255 (totally opaque),
    and whether or not unselected icons get their labels ellipsized
    (truncated) to fit on one line. (The 'selected-' version controls the
    opacity of icons that have been selected with the mouse.)
    The second six entries can be used to enable a text shadow to be painted
    with the icon labels. The offsets are in pixels. Setting them to 0 (the
    defaults) will disable the shadows entirely. Again, the 'selected-'
    versions apply to icons that have been selected with the mouse.
    The third four entries set spacing and sizing for individual icons on
    the grid. The 'cell-spacing' property specifies the spacing between each
    'cell' in the grid of icons. The 'cell-padding' property sets extra
    padding placed around each icon+text. The units for these two are in
    pixels. The 'cell-text-width-proportion' property specifies the maximum
    width of the text label underneat the icon, as a multiplier of the icon
    width (so for 30px icons, '2.5' would leave a 75px wide area underneath
    for the text).
    The fourth three entries set the color of the rounded text background.
    * NORMAL sets the color for the regular, unselected state.
    * SELECTED sets the color for when the icon is selected, and the desktop has
    keyboard/mouse focus.
    * ACTIVE sets the color for when the icon is selected, but the desktop does
    not have keyboard/mouse focus.
    The final three entries set the color of the label text. See above for the
    differences between NORMAL, SELECTED, and ACTIVE.

    Hi,
    In general, event ID 1530 means there are some data in the user profile are still be accessed when the user log
    off from the Terminal Server. Please check if any of the data is still remained in the user profile supposed to be deleted. You can use Process Monitor or Process Explorer in order to find the software which is using the data and find the solution. If there
    is no such data remained, the Windows have possibly stopped the process and deleted the data when log off. In such a case, you can ignore the Event 1530.
    In addition, I recommend running SFC /Scannow from an elevated command prompt and check a dump file for Windows
    Explorer under C:\Localdumps.
    Besides, you can also download
    Autoruns to troubleshooting Explorer issues. Please run Autoruns as Administrator, go to Options menu, Filter, select Hide Microsoft Entries and Ok. After that, open the Explorer tab,
    and you will see all DLL that are running inside File Explorer, so start disabling and testing if Explorer crashed.

  • Where can I change desktop for anonymous user ?

    Hello.
    Where can I change desktop for anonymous user ? I'd like to change it in the same manner as sampleportal desktop (with amconsole) , but I did not found it in the amconsole.
    If you know, please, tell.

    The user "authlessanonymous" holds the information that people see if they are not signed on. It can be changed like any other user. It may have to be enabled under the Service Configuration tab -> portal desktop.

    Hi,
    Thank you for posting in Windows Server Forum.
    Firstly please update the driver and in addition you can try below registry workaround.
    To do this, change the value of the following registry subkeys to 3 (Manual) or 4 (Disabled):
    •HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\cdrom
    Name: Start
    Type : REG_DWORD
    Data: 3 or 4
    •HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\parport
    Name: Start
    Type : REG_DWORD
    Data: 3 or 4
    Note: If the above registry is changed to 4 (Disabled), the related device is not usable because a driver used in the device is not loaded. Therefore, if the device will be used in the future, the above registry should be set as 3 (Manual).
    More information.

    Hope it helps!

  • HomeHub can't see desktop

    We've just got a new HomeHub with the new connection to BT Broadband. My laptop connects wirelessly without problem, picking up the first available DHCP address. I cannot now get the desktop to connect. It has a Linksys adaptor which worked perfectly with the Thomson router we've just replaced.
    My problem is that the desktop sees the HomeHub, the HomeHub cannot see the desktop and will not assign it a DHCP address. I've tried to give it a fixed address manually, but this doesn't work either. The desktop thinks its connected but it isn't.
    Any ideas as to what I can do next? Desktop owner is tearing hair out....
    Kate

    Can you ping the homehub from the desktop? I think the address of the HH should be 192.168.0.254. I'm puzzled as to how you know that the HH can 'see' your desktop. However, I don't use the BT supplied HH so it might have some facility for doing that.
    It might be useful if you posted details of which operating system you are using on your desktop and laptop.
    Another thought - can you see the shares of your desktop on the laptop and vice versa?
    I'm no expert on these things - they are just things that I would check. Others on this forum are much better qualified tha I on sorting out network problems.

    It may be that a "metadata attribute" called the "bundle bit" has somehow been set on the Desktop folder, such that the system treats it as a "package" rather than as a folder.
    To check for this, click on the Desktop, type command-I (Get Info), and look in the General section of the Info window under "Kind". It should say "Kind: Folder" - if it instead says "Kind:package," then I would proceed as follows:
    Download and run the utility File Matey. From its "Choose an Object" window, navigate to the Desktop folder and click Choose. In the next window, see if the box for "Has Bundle bit" is checked:
    If so, then uncheck it, and click Apply, then Save.
