Yes, Windows and Mac computers can share the same Wi-Fi network.
Are you setting up a new network or are you adding devices to an existing network?

Mac can read NFTS drives, but cannot write to them.  An alternative to reformatting Windows HDDs is third party software such as Paragon:

  • HT1218 i have a windows 8 computer that is not connecting with my time capsule wifi. my other macs and windows 7 systems do connect. is this a firmware update glitch? any suggestions?

I have a windows 8 computer that is connecting poorly via wifi and my Apple time capsule to the internet. My IMac an another windows 7 based computer are connecting fine. This started 6 days ago. And, the windows 8 machine connects well via a hard Cat-5 connection to the time capsule (I'm using that now) and worked well on a wireless netgrear system over the weekend.
I'm thinking an automatic firmware update may have caused this or perhaps i need the time capsule to use something other than a default address. Those are just guesses, but I could sure use some help. Thank you.

It is hard to figure where the issue is..
Certainly if windows updated the wireless driver that can mess things up no end..
    What update happened 6days ago?
What TC do you have.. ?? If it is flat one and you updated to 7.6.4 do a factory reset and reconfigure.
If that doesn't work roll the firmware back to 7.6.1 or even 7.5.2 as these are generally superior to windows.
There is no update for TC gen5 yet.

  • Share files between Mac and Windows in same iMac with boot camp

    Hello,
I am new in using Mac and recently I buy a IMac 24" model.
I used to use PC a long time with a lot of old document.
I want to install Windows XP with boot camp.
But I also want to share my documents, music, video files between Mac and Windows in same iMac.
    How can I do this?
    Thanks in advance,
    Eric

Hi Eric and welcome to Discussions and the Apple world.
Mac OSX can read and write from Windows partitions (like the BootCamp Windows partition you are about to create) when using FAT32 as file system for Windows.
However with FAT32 you are limited to a partition size of 32GB.
Mac OSX can also read from Windows partitions that uses the NTFS file system, but it can not write to them unless you use a third-party helper like either Paragons NTFS for Mac http://www.paragon-software.com/home/ntfs-mac/ or NTFS-3G http://www.ntfs-3g.org/
Windows can not even see or use a Mac OSX partition without additional help by MacDrive http://www.mediafour.com/products/macdrive/

  • Screen Share Mac and Windows

    Hi,
Sometimes I'm asked to help friends and family with stuff on their computers. It would be handy if I could help them remotely but I've yet to find a way to screen share between a mac and windows machine over the internet.
    Is it possible?

    HI,
A Leopard 10.5 tutorial here might help...

Sharing your screen with other computer users
You can set up your computer to allow others to view your screen and control your computer. While your screen is shared with another computer, a user of the other computer sees what’s on your screen and can open, move, and close files and windows, open applications, and even restart the computer.
    To set up screen sharing:
Choose Apple menu > System Preferences and click Sharing.
    Select the Screen Sharing checkbox.
To specify who can share your screen, select one of the following:
All users: Select this if you want to allow any user with a user account on your computer to share your screen.
Only these users: Select this if you want to restrict screen sharing to specific users.
Click Add + at the bottom of the Users list and select a user from Users & Groups (accounts you have set up in Accounts preferences), Network Users (users on your network), or your Address Book. Or click New Person and enter a name and password to create a sharing account. Then select that user from the list and click Select.
Click Computer Settings and set the following options:
Anyone may request permission to control screen: Select this to allow anyone on your network to request to share your screen.
VNC viewers may control screen with password: Select this and enter a password that VNC viewer applications can enter in order to control your screen.
It’s recommended that you not set a password if you only share this computer’s screen using the built-in screen sharing viewer in Mac OS X.
For more information go to your Finder and click Help from the Menu Bar. Type in Screen Sharing in the search field.
I use the same instructions for screen sharing betweeen a Mac running 10.6 to a Mac running 10.5 and a Mac running 10.4, so hopefully the above instructions and links will help.

  • How can I make an icon that links to a webpage that works with Mac and Windows??

    Hi!
I burn CDs with my photos and send them to clients.   Besides the photos folder, I would like to include a file (similar to the .webloc files on the Mac Desktop) that can be clicked and it will be linked to my website - it will open up a browser window and go to my website .      Is it posssible to make one of these icons that works with both Macs and Windows machines?  Thanks!

    Now it works!  Thanks, Denico!
The reason I saved to text:   The first time I followed your instructions, it did not work.   I tried to figure out what I did wrong and saw that you wrote to "save as plain text."   I did not know what this means and there was no option available to save a plain text.  So I looked around and saw "save as stationery" and I guessed that maybe that was what you meant.   And after that, it worked!  But the next thing you know, the icons started duplicating themselves.
I guess I had made a different mistake in the beginning and I fixed it without knowing what it is.
    Thanks for clearing that up.
But just one question.  WHY does saving as "stationery" make an icon duplicate itself?

  • I have partitioned my time capsule, but I can't get it to work as a Time Machine back up and permanent media server for both mac and PC. What format do I need to partition the drive to so that it works for both mac and windows and so that it will be visab

I have partitioned my time capsule, as I want part of it to act as a media server for both mac and windows. However I don't know what format that I need to partition it to. I also can't make it a permanently accesible drive. I want to restore the drive to the original format (which I don't know) and start again and re-partition the drive in a format that can be used for media by both mac and PC and for time machine back-ups and make the media part of it permanetly accesible so I can add and acccess my files.
    Thanks

You are mixing up a couple of things here.
The TC drive cannot be partitioned without removing it.. did you do that?
If you partition it you must use a Mac disk utility and use the HFS+ ie standard Mac format. And GUID partition table not windows type.
You can select erase disk in the airport utility.. that will take the disk back to original format. No partitions. TC is deliberately not partitioned as it is not a media server.. it is a backup device for TM. Over time .. the disk will be filled with TM backups so you have a long history of file changes to your computer.
There is no media server in the TC.. it is merely disk storage.. you can serve files from it to a media device.. but the TC itself is dumb as dumb.
Now the actual format of the drive is irrelevant to the PC.. The TC offers SMB file services to the network. You can copy files to and from the TC as if it was a local disk without caring one iota about the format. The TC handles that .. it is not a local disk .. it is a network drive.
Although you cannot partition the TC. you can still copy files to it.. this does have implications for TM.. but as long as there is plenty of free space should not be a major issue.
You can create a disk image via the disk utility in a Mac.. and as stated you can create partitions if you do it on a Mac with the disk directly connected which means breaking warranty if any exists on the TC.

  • HT1452 I want to reset the permissions on a western digital external hard drive to work between mac and windows... How can I do this easily?

I have a MacBook Pro and have recently bought a Western Digital external hard drive.  I used it on my windows laptop first and unfortunately now on the Mac it is read only.  How can I set it so that I can use it successfully between the both the Mac and windows laptop?
    Thanks

You will need to pull all the information off first. The formatting will erase it all.
Use Disk Utility (in Applications >> Utilities or use Spotlight to find it). On the left select your WD drive and then select the Erase tab. Where it says Format, select exFat in the drop-down menu. Next, click Erase and done. It will take approx. 5-15mins to re-format.
Cons: You will be unable to store files 4GB or larger in this format (usually only dmg/iso files or large Outlook files). Also, you will be unable to use Time Machine or other auto-backup programs.
That is not entirely correct, there is no 4G limit using exFat, FAT32 is the one with the limit.

Hey guys, how can i password protect my files in external hard drive? I want to access those files both from mac and windows PC!

If you want a cross-platform solution that doesn't require the use of third-party software, use an external drive with hardware encryption. The device will have either a physical key or a numeric keypad. I don't have a specific recommendation.

  • Can I mount my external hard drive which will be compatible with both Mac and Windows?

    Hello,
Can I mount my external hard drive which will be compatible with both Mac and Windows? If yes, then please let me know, because I intend to use my hard drive for both Windows and Mac, without losing any file.

Yes. By default, Mac OS X and Windows can read and write drives which are formatted as FAT32 or exFAT; NTFS drives aren't writable from Mac OS X without additional software.

  • IPod with both Mac and Windows?

I have a Mac at work and a PC at home. I have my iPod nano set-up with my work computer but I would also like to use it on my home computer. I downloaded the Windows iPod updater, however, it won't let me update....only restore. If I restore, and it loses all my data, can I then hook it back up to my Mac to gain my data back from iTunes. Can I have both Mac and Windows software on my nano at the same time? Or do I have to stick with one system?

Chris, maybe you can help with my situation. It's the opposite from Jilly's. My wife uses her Nano with a PC; I'd like to share some of the stuff on my Mac with her. Can I Restore without losing what she's got already? (And then use the Nano with both computers thereafter...)
    TIA,
    Jeff

  • How to prevent iTunes for Windows from "Updating iTunes Library"? (Library is on a NAS and managed by iTunes for Mac. Now getting update wars between Mac and Windows versions of the player.

How to prevent iTunes for Windows from "Updating iTunes Library"?
My library is on a NAS and managed by iTunes on a Mac. I can connect from wife's Windows laptop using iTunes for Windows but every time I do, it Updates iTunes Library. Next time I log in from my Mac it Updates iTunes Library in return. It appears I'm experiencing "Update Wars" between the Mac and Windows versions of iTunes. I would like to allow my wife to stream iTunes songs to her new laptop but I don't want any updates from this source... prefer to manage the library from my Mac and not allow Windows to do any thing other than listen to existing playlists.
    Thanks for any help/suggestions.

Connect the PC to the library on the NAS. Wait while "updated".
Under Edit > Preferences > Advanced make sure the media folder is correctly pointed at the media folder on the NAS. If not correct, close iTunes, wait a few moments, then open iTunes again.
Close iTunes on the PC. Do not open iTunes on the Mac.
Copy the library files, iTunes Library.itl, iTunes Library Extras.itdb, iTunes Library Genius.itdb, sentinel and the folder Album Artwork into an empty iTunes folder on the PC, for example C:\iTunes.
Click the icon to start iTunes and immediately press and hold down SHIFT. Keep holding until prompted to choose or create a library. Click choose and browse to the copied .itl file, e.g. C:\iTunes\iTunes Library.itl
The library should now work properly on the PC, however check the setting for the media folder. If needs be correct, close iTunes and reopen.
Open iTunes on the Mac. It will update again, but that should be last time.
