Can a Mac book air connect to non wifi

Can a MacBook Air connect to the internet without a wireless modem/router? (With a cord)

Yes, it has its own Airport card, but you still need an Internet connection of some kind such as a Wi-Fi hotspot. However, in your own home you will need Internet service and a router. The service provider usually supplies the modem.

Normally, AirPort Utility is not used or needed to set up Time Machine backups......unless a default setting on the Time Capsule to Enable File Sharing has been changed.
On the other hand, if you open AirPort Utility, a picture of the Time Capsule should be displayed. Are you saying here that the Time Capsule does not appear when you open AirPort Utility?

  • Mac book air connection to tv problem

I am having an issue with connection my mac book air to my tv. I am using a thunderbolt / Mini Displayport to HDMI adapter to connect to an sony TV. The computer screen shows up on the tv but both the tv and computer screens keep on blinking and changing resolutions. Is there an easy fix to this? The mac book has  an operating system of OS X 10.9.3 and the sony tv is a Bravia.

If I were having this issue, I'd try all the resolutions, plus I'd disconnect the cable and/or restart after every one, but that's just me, I like to try anything that might work.

  • Mac book air connects to internet w/ lag and drops

my macbook air has been working for the past year, but recently my internet has been lagging and disconnecting by itself every 30 seconds. all my computers connect through a router and modem but only the mac air is having internet problems. it keeps saying "the page cannot be displayed" even though airport shows that it is connected to the internet. (note: the mac air works flawlessly when I connect to other wifi locations outside of home)
    router: netgear
    all the things I've tried.
    -editing keychain settings
-deleting my network and creating a new one
    -resetting modem and router
    -resetting airport
    -changing dns and ip settings
    -resetting the mac air
    -turning off bluetooth
    -changing browser settings
    -smashing the router around
    nothing has worked....
p.s. there was one day where I changed my router and it worked for one day, the next day it didn't work again.

What are your wireless encryption settings? WEP, WPA2? Have you tried it with no encryption? Was it faster? Sometimes if you have rearranged the room or moved the router, interference can start. I also would download istumbler and see if you have neighbors using the same or adjacent channels. It will also show you the noise on your Netgear. Maybe this will bring some ideas to you:

  • Mac book air inertnet not working wifi still connected

So my Macbook Air ISP keeps failing. I know how to temperarly fix by Network prefrences, assist me, select wifi connection continue and then its back and working only to find out about 1-10mins later same ****. Im not costantly doing this. So this problems seems to be bigger. Works at other wifi connections but my home router. Use to work just fine for a while but the past month. I am getting annoyed to the point where I'm about to say **** with all apples products. But I will give it one last shot at fixing this problem. Now I've looked up online people with the same problem but all I see is computer geek talk that I dont understand. I have no money to spend giving 20$ over the phone crap or mac store money hungery genius to fix this either. Hope I can get support and or help with a step by step walk through for this fix PLEASE HELP !!!! So frustrated cause my computer is my work and life right now.

I may be able to help you get the ball rolling on this but you are going to have to be patient.  I may not be able to solve your problem but I might be able to help clarify your problem to others.
What type/brand of wireless router do you have?
Do you know what type of encryption you are using?  IE none,WEP,WPA,WPA2
Are there other wireless devices on your wireless network?
...if yes, do they work ok?
Do you live in an apartment complex?
Some ISP's  (Internet service providers) give you a single unit device which is a wireless router and MoDem in one unit.  You may want to have your ISP come out and set up this device again.  If there is something you don't understand let us know.

  • Mac book air connected to a dell screen shows only the background

Why can I only see the background on my Dell monitor which is connected via the thunderbolt connection using a display cable please?

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
It's working correctly, but it's in extended mode. To put a window onto your monitor, drag a window to the right of your MacBook Air's screen. If you want to show the same in your Mac and external display, press Command and F1 keys. See > http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5019

  • Can a latest Mac Book Air get connected to a display screen?

Presentation at meetings require Mac Book Air get connected to a display screen.
A Mac Book Pro is possible to get connected to a display screen using a A1307 adopter.
Does any one know if the latest Mac Book Air connectable to a display screen using A1307 adopter or anyother means? I would be oblighed to know the possibility prior to buy one.
    Regards

The Thunderbolt port doubles as a Mini-DisplayPort. Thunderbolt is not the same as Firewire. However, Apple does sell a Thunderbolt to Firewire adaptor so you can connect Firewire devices to the computer. Thunderbolt devices may be daisy-chained, but a display monitor must be the last device on that chain.
According to what I found the A1307 adaptor is Mini-DisplayPort to VGA. It will not connect to a Firewire port.

  • I need help with information on Mac Book Air

I'm planning to buy the mac book air. I just have a few question i was wondering if people could help me out. Right now i have a sony vaio laptop i hate it to death, but thats beside the point. My question is can the mac book air use a window's mobile cellphone as a air card, because with the sony all i had to do is dl some special files and i could use the cellphone as a air card. I was wondering if this laptop can do the exact same thing???

You will need to provide information on your cell phone and service provider, but the best source would be your service provider since it would depend on what was required to access their service using a cell phone as a modem. Without more information I would guess you can because if you could on your Sony you should be able to use it on any computer provided you had the appropriate cable (usually a USB cable that connects to the phone.)

    Hi CJR
I'm not sure how Time Capsule can be replicated onto your external drive but there is a USB port on the back of TC that can be hooked up to any recent external drive.
Another thing to think about , besides a Time Capsule failure, is the theft of your Time Capsule, so it might be a good idea to consider separating any redundant back-up from your Time Capsule or both my be stolen.
TC will back up until full and then begin deleting the oldest back-ups.  Mine is a 2TB Time capsule.
My back-up plan is as follows:
    1.  Macbook Air back-up on Time Capsule though Time Machine backs up everything - I think it's about every 30 min or so.
    2.  Contacts, reminders, appointments, notes, email are backed up through iCloud.
    3.  iTunes and non-itunes purchased music is on iMatch (and no need to back-up) and any non-iTunes music is backed up on an HP external drive (in case Time Capsule dies)
    4.  Photos are on my MacBook Air and are backed up on my HP external drive.
    5.  Office documents (Excel, Powerpoint, Access etc) are stored in a Skydrive app (like iCloud) and Skydrive syncs these docuemnts with the MS  cloud and my old PC and does not alter their native format like storing in iCloud would do.
    Cheers

  • I recently purchased a time capsule and thought I would put my itunes on it as an external drive as my mac book air only has 120gb. However I can not be connected to the internet and the TC at the same time in order to download the files to the TC. Help?

I recently purchased a Time Capsule and put my iTunes library on there so that I wasn't using up my hard drive space. Only 120gb on my mac book air. However when I download songs from iTunes I can not be connected wirelessly to the internet at the same time. Can I hard wire my TC in to my mac so that I can treat the TC as just an external hard drive? Thanks

Initially, you asked if you can hardwire your MBA to the TC. The answer is yes, by using the optional USB Ethernet adapter that Apple provides. However, in order for your MBA to access the TC's internal or USB-attached HDD, it would need to establish a network connection to it. This would be true of any NAS device on an Ethernet network. Therein, lies the problem. Your MBA cannot connect to two networks simultaneously.
One option then, would be to have two separate iTunes Media folders; one on the MBA & the other on the TC. This way, you can download the music to your MBA when connected to the Internet at the AirPort lounge, and then use iTunes Consolidate Library feature to transfer the audio files to the TC's iTunes Media Folder location. A great program to help maintain multiple iTunes Librarys and/or Media Folders, that you may want to consider, is PowerTunes.

You can, but how are you going to back up those other files?  When (not if) your Time Capsule fails, you risk losing them.  See #Q3 in Using Time Machine with a Time Capsule for details.
Then can i access these files only on the time capsule without connecting it?
Not sure what you mean.  You have to connect a computer, either via Ethernet cable or wirelessly, to read or write to the disk.

Power off the router. Wait a while.
Connect the router back to to the wall.
Power the router back on. Wait  until all lights are lit properly. It will take a while.
    Restart the computer.
    Start up in Safe Mode.

Of course. As both have Thunderbolt, it's as simple as buying a Thunderbolt cable, connect them and press Command and F2 keys on the iMac, so the iMac will be used as an external display for the MacBook Air. If you want more information, see > http://support.apple.com/kb/PH11302

  • HT3382 What if I want to connect the minidisplay port of a mac book air with the minidisplay port of a monitor? Can I use a the thunderbolt cable to do this connections?

Using mac book air (late 2010) minidisplay port and minidisplay port of monitor Monitor Dell UltraSharp de 23.8" Widescreen U2414H.
Can I connect them using a thunderbolt cable or is there a specific cable I can use to stablish this connection?
    Thanks

A Thunderbolt cable won't work.  Use a Mini DisplayPort to Mini DisplayPort, or Mini DisplayPort to DisplayPort, cable.

(If you use DisplayPort, make sure you use the Input, not Output, port on the display.)
