Here's something to consider. I see you have 1G RAM. That works well enough for Tiger 10.4. However, I think Leopard or Snow Leopard will be happier if you increase the RAM.
Your MBP can handle up to 2G of RAM. It has two RAM slots'In your case, there would be one 512MB module in each slot. You could replace one 512MB module with a 1G module and have a total over 1.5G. That would be a big help. Or replace both. If you are in the US, RAM is not expensive (see: 2.0GB Upgrade Kit (1.0GB Modules x 2 Matched) for US$33), and the RAM is easily installed even by the most novice user.

It seems to depend on which variant of the Core 2 Duo chip which you have and the model of MBP (see here http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1586222&tstart=0 ). I wouldn't necessarily believe the crucial site which could be based upon the published apple specs....... ?

It would help to know which one of the 9 different models of MacBook you have. To see which model you have go to the Apple in the upper left corner and select About This Mac, then click on More Info. When System Profiler comes up check the Model Identifier and post it back here.
If it's the Late 2007 model 3,1 then 10.7 is the most that it can run.

When I click on the Print menu item in Excel, there is a flash in the background like it is trying to open the print window, but nothing else. I am able to print from other programs like TextEdit, Mail or KakeidaGraph. As far as I know I have the latest Epson print driver.
Also, I am also unable to open an existing Excel or Word file from the open menu - both programs lock up and do not respond. I have to force quit. After I restart Excel or Word I can open an existing file by double clicking on the file, but if I again try to open another file from the open menu, Excel or Word lock up.
Any similar problems?

Apparently some are reporting that this causes the older PowerPC (PPC) applications that are supported in 10.6 via 'Rosetta' to crash upon attempting to open/save/print using any dialog box, or fail in other similar ways such as simply not printing or quitting, or freezing/hanging/crashing of the application.
I have read of some companies that have indeed submitted proper bug reports to Apple, but that is not a guarantee of a bug-fix being issued.

If you are unsure if you are still using PowerPC apps, if the application is currently running, look under the 'Activity Monitior' (in Applications -> Utilities), or alternatively you could check in the System Profiler, Applications. Check the column "Type".
Here is a fairly simple way you can restore you system and restore you applications functionality again, if you don't have a recent clone or good Time Machine backup that you can restore from. If you do, restore from your backup prior to having installed the Security Update 2012-001.

If you are restoring a backup made by a Mac to the same Mac
With your backup drive connected, start up your Mac from the Lion recovery partition (Command-R at startup) or Mac OS X v10.6 installation disc. Then use the "Restore From Time Machine Backup" utility. Select the backup prior to your issues, and it will be restored back to the state it was in at that time.
If you can't easily restore from a backup, you can instead do the following:
- You first start by reinstalling your OS X 10.6.x, this will preserve all your user data, your applications, no worries there.
- Then install the Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1 (links provided below)
- Make sure you're printers are showing up correctly in your system preferences, if not, re-add the printers
- Then finally, run the Apple Software Update (by pulling down the Apple Menu), and install any and all remaining updates, except do not then re-install the Security Update 2012-001. It is possible that you may have to reboot after installing some of the updates, and you may even need to run it a 2nd time to make sure that you've got all updates, except NOT the Security Update 2012-001.

10.7 Lion is still available from Apple. You will have to call Apple Customer Care 1-800-692-7753 or 1-800-676-2775. to purchase it. Then within 3 days you will get an email with a code which you can use to download Lion from the App Store. The price is $19.99.
You must have at least a Late 2006 model 2,1 MacBook.
The model 2,1 (Late 2006 & Mid 2007) can use 3gb of 200 pin 667mhz PC2-5300 RAM
The model 3,1 (Late 2007) can use 6gb of 200 pin 667mhz PC2-5300 RAM
Lion will require at least 2gb of RAM but really needs 4gb to run smoothly. You can put two 2gb RAM sticks in the model 2,1 but it can only use 3,3gb. This is a hardware limitation and cannot be changed.

Also Lion doesn't run any Power PC programs. To see if you have any Power PC programs go to the Apple in the upper left corner and select About This Mac, then click on More Info. When System Profiler comes up select Applications under Software. Then look under Kind to see if any of your applications are listed as Power PC. Universal and Intel will run under Lion.
Before Mac switched to Intel processors in 2006 they used Power PC processors from 1994 to 2005. Power PC 601 through 604, G3, G4 and G5. Applications written for the Power PC processors need the application called Rosetta to run on Intel processors. This was part of the Operating System in 10.4 and 10.5 but was an optional install in 10.6. With 10.7 Lion Apple dropped all support for Power PC applications.

As much as I love OS X, I miss the old classic environment and the style of the older OS versions, and I find myself feeling nostalgic (I also have a bunch of older software that I can't otherwise play, given that the Classic Environment is not supported on Intel Macs). If I were to purchase Mac OS version 9, is it possible to partition my hard drive and install Mac OS 9 on that partition? I would assume that this could be done, but can anyone tell me how to do it, or can anyone offer any links that provide good instructions on how this can be done? I've partitioned my hard drive with Boot Camp for installing Windows XP on my Mac, but I don't really have any experience other than that with partitioning hard drives or any idea how to do it, not to mention how to install an OS on it once it's partitioned. Any help in this direction will be greatly appreciated. Thanks a lot.

Yes, OS 9 is PPC architecture only. The only way I can think of that you could possibly run it would be to download PearPC (A PPC architecture emulator-http://pearpc.sourceforge.net/) off of Windows (which is officially unsupported on Apple machines to begin with), and then attempt to run OS 9 off of PearPC.
The program is rather slow, and as you can see, the process is really quite time consuming, illogical (three different systems, one running in emulation), and definitely not worth the end result.
