Can a MacBook Pro battery spontaneously slow the system down?

I sent my 2010 MacBook Pro to a non-Apple technician to replace the screen. He wrote me back stating that it was done but had a problem with the battery. He said that the computer takes 10 minutes to boot up and is slow afterwards. He said when he unplugs the battery it speeds up to normal. Before I sent it to him it had no such problems. Can a perfectly-working battery spontaneously go bad like this?

Apple has financing arrangements you can use provided you have an adequate credit rating. You can apply when you make your purchasing arrangements online at the Apple Store. Or you can seek your own loan from a bank or charge the purchase on a credit card.
Also, see Apple Credit Page.

Depends on your particular model of MBP. It depends on the context, too. Do you mean hours of usage or do you mean life of the battery?

  • MacBook Pro Battery - what is the best way?

I have tried researching this before i ask, but i am not fully sure, so i am here asking
I recently bought a MacBook Pro. I use it as my desktop (plugged to external monitor), so it is the computer i use all day long.  Since I was a PC user before, i am used to disconnecting the power when the battery is full. Now i am not sure this is the best way for the MAC.
Since I cannot take the battery out in this laptop, is it okay to plug it on and off as the battery is either charged or needs charging?  I read in a few a places that you can keep it plugged most of the time and that means that the computer will be using the power and not the battery power, is this okay to do, and is it accurate?
    Any advice would be appreciated

Modern batteries do not have to be removed nor does the charger need to be disconnected once the battery is fully charged. It's perfectly fine to use the computer with the AC adaptor whenever you are able to operate near an AC outlet. Then operate on battery power when AC power is not available.

  • Macbook Pro wakes up with the lid down

A very annoying thing has started happening. I close my Macbook Pro 17" lid and initially it goes into sleep mode (logo light goes off as well) and then after a few seconds the logo lights up again and I can see that the screen has come back on through the gap.
I have tried resetting the PRAM and SMC to no avail.
Maybe it's a process that is doing it because when I reboot holding down 'alt' and then booy into 10.8 Recovery the issue goes away.
Any suggestions would be very gratefully received.
    Cheers

If you have any peripherals connected to your computer, disconnect them. If your issue disappears, one of the peripherals is the culprit.

  • Can a Macbook Pro 5.5 with operating system MAC OS 10.5.8 be updated?

Can a Mac book Pro 5.5 with operating system MAC OS 10.5.8 be updated?  I tried to back up an Iphone 5s and was informed that it needed a newer ITUNES software but then tried to update I TUNES software and could not because it is not compatible with MAC OS 10.5.8

A 13" 2009 machine? Sure, you can even run Mavericks (and install up to 8GB of RAM), but you'll have to upgrade to Snow Leopard (latest release was 10.6.8 - you can purchase the disc from the Apple online store -> http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC573Z/A/mac-os-x-106-snow-leopard - $20 and FREE SHIPPING!!!).
After updating to Snow Leopard, then you can upgrade to Mavericks free. I don't know how much RAM you presently have, but your machine will accept up to 8GB of 204-pin PC3-8500 (1066 MHz) DDR3 SO-DIMMs RAM. I would recommend upgrading your RAM, if you haven't already, before installing Mavericks, though.
    Good luck,

  • Teatimer periodically starts paging like crazy(1500+pfs). It slows the system down very noticiably. How do i stop if?

It occurs several times a day and eventually stops. It often runs several minutes. I use the system task monitor to watch it. cpu usage is very small, in 3-5% range. I think the paging activity is overloading the paging subsytem for the rest of my tasks. If I stop teatimer, paging activity falls off markedly and everything else returns to normal response.

I have the same problem and I cannot find any way to turn off the internal bluetooth without killing all bluetooth including the dongle. If someone has a way to turn off the internal bluetooth I want to see it.
    Thanks

  • DVDRW is Mega-Slow and slows the system down

    Hi,
    I have:
4 x SATA2 disks on the ICH7 (three in RAID 0, one as single disk)
1 x IDE DVDRW on the Secondary IDE port, set as slave
When I burned a DVD yesterday the sound started to slow, I thought it was the application. But when I try to install a game DVD, the same thing happens .. the sound becomes 'jittery' and most noticeably the DVD takes AGES (FOREVER) to read.
I checked the BIOS, JMicron is set to IDE. the rest is set to defaults.
I checked Device Manager, the only active channel (Secondary IDE) which was set to 'PIO ONLY'. I changed this to 'DMA if available' but it's still in PIO mode. I beleive it should be in DMA??
Should I be using a different cable? I'm using the MSI supplied cable at present.
Any assistance would be much appreciated!
     - FrobinRobin

You already have the latest stable release from MSI, but unfortunately lots of MSI customers have a problem with this BIOS version. There is a Beta release (1.6a) that BOSSKILLER posted earlier
    http://www.ukshazam.com/download/bosskiller/7235v16A.rar
and it’s upgrading the Jmicron BIOS version too. You can choose between DOS or Windows flashing procedure. If you decide in Windows mode, download the latest BIOS version from MSI Live Update (Application that came with your Installation CD for keeping your MB up to date) and the file from the link above. After everything downloaded, go to Program files-Setup files replace only the bios file (extension .150) with the one from the link above(extension .16A), and run the MSIsetup file. Make sure that the Clear CMOS option is selected. For safety reason, make a recovery floppy and check for some setting in BIOS before flashing, so that you can configure the new version of the BIOS properly.
About the Widows drivers, Go to Control Panel – System- Hardware - Device Manager- “SCSI and RAID controllers” – right click on Jmicron- Uninstall.
Then:  Control Panel- Add or Remove Programs – JRAID-uninstall.
Restart your computer, and when you’ll be prompt that “Found New Hardware”, click cancel on the “Found New Hardware wizard” and install the drivers that I’ve posted earlier (double click on the setup file).
Try with the drivers first, and if the installation is successful under DVD/CD Rom Devices you will notice that the drive is recognized as SCSI cD/Rom Device.
    Good Luck

  • Can I solve a 2011, 13', macbook pro battery problem

After a local area power cut, my 2011 13' Macbook Pro battery symbol in the menu bar instantly showed that there was a problem with the battery, which had previously shown a 98% charged (full), but now advised me, via a help document that appeared when I clicked on the symbol, that I would need to get my battery serviced as it is not running/charging properly. Perhaps I was remis in not dealing with the problem sooner, but this morning, some 8 months later, the normal battery symbol simply has an X on it. The battery has completely died now and my otherwise incredible Mac will only work when conected to a power source. Is there anything I can do to 'reboot' or reconfigure the battery without paying for a new battery? Many thanks in advance for any help on this.

    Try an SMC reset.

  • MacBook and MacBook Pro Battery Update

    http://www.apple.com/support/macbook_macbookpro/batteryupdate/
Apple has recently discovered that some batteries used in its MacBook and MacBook Pro notebooks may have battery performance issues. Apple is offering a software update that is designed to improve battery performance.
The battery update is available immediately via Software Update or downloadable here.
Note: The factors causing the performance issues do not present a safety risk. You may continue to use your current battery.
This battery update should be run on all MacBook and MacBook Pro computers and extra batteries that were purchased between February 2006 and April 2007.
If, after you have installed the battery update, your battery has any of the symptoms listed below, please make a reservation to bring your computer with its battery to your local Apple Retail Store, or contact an Apple Authorized Service Provider (AASP), or call your local Apple Support Contact Center. If Apple or an AASP determines that your battery is eligible for replacement, you will receive a new battery, free of charge, even if your MacBook or MacBook Pro is out of warranty.
For MacBook and MacBook Pro systems with Intel Core Duo processors, this program extends repair coverage on the battery for up to two years from the date of purchase of the computer.
    Identifying an affected battery
Affected batteries will have one or more of the following symptoms:
Battery is not recognized causing an “X” to appear in the battery icon in the Finder menu bar.
Battery will not charge when computer is plugged into AC power.
Battery exhibits low charge capacity/runtime when using a fully charged battery with a battery cycle count (as shown in System Profiler) of less than 300.
    Battery pack is visibly deformed.
Note: If your MacBook or MacBook Pro battery does not have any of the symptoms noted above, your battery does not need to be replaced.
    Next Steps
To participate in this worldwide program, your MacBook or MacBook Pro battery must show the symptoms noted above. If it does, please make a reservation to bring your computer and battery to your local Apple Retail Store, or contact an Apple Authorized Service Provider (AASP), or call your local Apple Support Contact Center. The U.S. support number is 1-800-275-2273. If you are located outside the U.S., please see Apple's international contact list for your local Apple Technical Support phone number. An Apple technical support representative or an Apple Authorized Service Provider (AASP) will determine if the battery is eligible for replacement, free of charge. Customers are responsible for transportation costs to eligible AASPs and retail stores.
If a replacement battery is sent to you via airmail, it is important that you return the older battery to Apple so that it can be properly recycled.
This program extends repair coverage on the battery for up to two years from the date of purchase of the computer for Intel Core Duo-based MacBook and MacBook Pro computers. Apple will continue to evaluate the battery update program and will provide further extensions as needed. Apple also reserves the right to modify the program if other solutions that address the battery performance issues become available.

For MacBook and MacBook Pro systems with Intel Core Duo processors, this program extends repair coverage on the battery for up to two years from the date of purchase of the computer.
Pretty nice change for those C2D's

  • After a year of no use and a fully discharged battery, my MacBook Pro refuses to accept the administrator name and the password. How can I reset these?

After a year of no use and a resulting fully discharged battery, the MacBook Pro refuses to recognize the administrator name and password (both). It has system OS X 10.6 which can not be upgraded without the information. How can I reset or reistall the administrator name and password?

Thanks to all who responded. You are all absolutely correct. However, this Ipad was a gift to my wife who was dying of cancer in the hospital and wanted some entertainment. So I started it out with her Apple ID. After she passed away I moved from Sacramento to Austin and eventually proceeded to get the Apple ID changed from my wife's to mine. Meanwhile when she was in the hospital I opened an Itunes account in my name to buy movies for her. That was the first mistake.
Then during the move to Austin I lost track of the IPAD and later found it and tried to use support but could not remember the proper ID. Later the folks at the Apple store helped me create a new and novel Apple ID that was unfortunately unlike any other.
The botom line is that I am stuck with three Apple IDs and three passwords. I am told by Apple there is nothing they can do about this as IDs cannot be changed or destroyed. I can quit using them or start a new account but when I try to do that the system keeps remembering too many things from the past and resists.
Even if I sold this Ipad and bought a new one, the system memory is still there.
I think the real problem is that destop and laptop computers are totally owned by an individual and that individual can control logins and passwords to his liking. IPADs and similar Apple products are different in that the corporation has built in their own intrusion detection schemes because of the relation to Itunes.
One thing I thought about is to open a new Itunes account pretendding to be a new customer with my regular Apple ID. Perhaps I could do the same with Apple Support.
    Thanks for your comments.
