Can a MBPr drive external screen from integrated GPU?

Hi
I am looking to conserve battery life with my new MacBook Pro Retina and want to set it to integrated GPU only when on battery, however, I cannot seem to make it see an external display when on this setting.
Any ideas of a way to make this work or is it not possible at all?
Robin

Hi
I have no issue with it switching to discrete GPU when connected via Thuderbolt, as I will typically have my machine plugged in when I do this.
However I visit custoemrs and do presentations and I woudl have expected the integrated GPU to be easily able to output to an external monitor for this simple process but nope, nothing at all.
I am guessing, although I have not tried it, that I could make the external screen my only screen but this is not an ideal option either!!!!!

    Energy Saver, you can keep the computer awake while the screen saver shuts the monitor off but I'm not sure that would do it for you.

  • HT204291 Why can't I get full screen from my ipad to Apple TV

    Why can't I get full screen from my ipad to Apple TV?

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
    Mirroring won't fill the TV screen. The iPad has an aspect ratio of 4:3 and the iPhone 4S or prior an aspect ratio of 3:2, neither of these will fit exactly into a TV screen which as an aspect ratio of 16:9. The Apple TV will not zoom the mirrored image, because it may well cut off information which is situated at the top or bottom of the screen.

  • Can I disable the LCD screen from displaying the Network Name or Password of my device?

    Can I disable the LCD screen from displaying the Network Name or Password of my device?  I feel that having this information readily available to any who can turn on my device is a security flaw.
    I have change the network name and password and would like to secure that information .

    Worked with VZW tech support and finally found where you can disable or mask  the display of the network name and password on the Jetpack LCD screen.  You need to access the admin screen of your jetpack (http://my.jetpack/) .  From there, navigate to Jetpack Settings --> Click on Wifi tab -- Click on the Wi-Fi Options link halfway down the page and it will show the two settings that control the display of network name and password.
    As they say, a picture is worth a thousand words...here are screen shots showing how to get to these settings. ...
    The LCD display will show ********* for the network name and password if the two checkboxes above are unchecked. I really think these settings should be disabled to be begin with.
    Oh well...posting here to share with those interested...

  • How can i use an external screen on mountain lion when i'm running on battery power?

    Hey all:
    I just upgraded from snow leopard to Mountain Lion, and i use external screen, keyboard and mouse all the time....
    On Mountain Lion it's perfect when the power adaptor is connected as soon as you close the LID your external screen becomes the primary screeen and it's fully functional desktop (no mirroring or extension screen)
    But the problem is when i'm in battery power, in snow leopard i used to close my lid my mac goes to sleep then i wake it up using the mouse and immediately open the LID so it doesn't go to sleep again and now i'm running on battery power with a primary external screen.
    Any idea how to use an external screen on mountain lion while i'm on battery power? (i know i can use mirroring but i want just 1 primary screen and the laptop screen would be turned off )
    Thanks for the help.....

    You can't with the lid closed, that's one of the rules for clamshell mode.

  • Can't connect to external HD from sleep

    I have an external hd (250 gig Western Digital) attached to my Airport Extreme. After I close my macbook and open it (put it to sleep, basically) it says I connection failed, can no longer connect to server. It works again after I restart my Macbook, but I obviously don't want to do this every time. Does anyone have any solutions?

    Don't confuse the amount of memory in the computer RAM with memory on the hard drive, even through both are called memory and measured in bytes. You can check your amount of RAM by looking at About This Mac under the Apple menu. You can find the right type of RAM using the configuration tool on the Crucial website (they have an excellent warranty and reputation for supporting what they sell, so I'd suggest buying from them). You can install RAM yourself following the instructions at eMac - Do-It-Yourself. Installing RAM is a user-servicable item and does not affect your warranty.
    The amount of memory on the internal hard drive can be found in Disk Utility, or do Get-Info on the Macintosh HD icon on the Desktop. If your drive has less than 5 GB or so free space, you can easily add an external powered Firewire HD from a vendor such as Small Dog Electronics, and move user data over to the external drive:
    iTunes: Moving your iTunes Music folder
    iPhoto: How to move the iPhoto Library Folder
    You can use Disk Utility to partition an external HD into a partition that matches your internal HD size and one or more other partitions to hold user data, then use CarbonCopyCloner or SuperDuper! to make a bootable clone of the internal HD on the first partition of the external HD. You can also install DiskWarrior on the external HD. Then in an emergency you can boot from the external HD using Startup Manager and either run DW on the internal HD or use SuperDuper! to restore the internal HD from the external backup.

  • How can I remove an external HDD from Time Machine

    I want to remove an external HDD from Time Machine but it is not shown in the list, how can I do this please?

    Open Time Machine preferences, click on the Options button. At the bottom of the exclusion list click on the Add [-] button, select the drive in the File dialog, click on the Exclude button. Understand that this configuration will only remain as long as the drive remains mounted.

  • How can I execute an external program from within a button's event handler?

    I am using Tomcat ApacheTomcat 6.0.16 with Netbeans 6.1 (with the latest JDK/J2EE)
    I need to execute external programs from an event handler for a button on a JSF page (the program is compiled, and extremely fast compared both to plain java and especially stored procedures written in SQL).
    I tried what I'd do in a standalone program (as shown in the appended code), but it didn't work. Instead I received text saying the program couldn't be found. This error message comes even if I try the Windows command "dir". I thought with 'dir' I'd at least get the contents of the current working directory. :-(
    I can probably get by with cgi on Apache's httpd server (or, I understand tomcat supports cgi, but I have yet to get that to work either), but whatever I do I need to be able to do it from within the button's event handler. And if I resort to cgi, I must be able to maintain session jumping from one server to the other and back.
    So, then, how can I do this?
    Thanks
    Ted
    NB: The programs that I need to run do NOT take input from the user. Rather, my code in the web application processes user selections from selection controls, and a couple field controls, sanitizes the inoputs and places clean, safe data in a MySQL database, and then the external program I need to run gets safe data from the database, does some heavy duty number crunching, and puts the output data into the database. They are well insulated from mischeif.
    NB: In the following array_function_test.pl was placed in the same folder as the web application's jsp pages, (and I'd tried WEB-INF - with the same result), and I DID see the file in the application's war file.
            try {
                java.lang.ProcessBuilder pn = new java.lang.ProcessBuilder("array_function_test.pl");
                //pn.directory(new java.io.File("K:\\work"));
                java.lang.Process pr = pn.start();
                java.io.BufferedInputStream bis = (java.io.BufferedInputStream)pr.getInputStream();
                String tmp = new String("");
                byte b[] = new byte[1000];
                int i = 0;
                while (i != -1) {
                    bis.read(b);
                    tmp += new String(b);
                getSelectionsDisplayTextArea().setText(getSelectionsDisplayTextArea().getText() + "\n\n" + tmp);
            } catch (java.io.IOException ex) {
                getSelectionsDisplayTextArea().setText(getSelectionsDisplayTextArea().getText() + "\n\n" + ex.getMessage());
            }

    Hi Fonsi!
    One way to execute an external program is to use the System Exec.vi. You find it in the functions pallet under Communication.

  • Is there an app for video playback on external screen from ipad mini which avoids mirroring?

    I want to play fullscreen video from ipad mini to external screens with a clean look and without without showing playback controls etc. I need to be able to play, pause, change the order of video tracks without affecting the external display as it's for playback of video backing tracks for a music show.
    Does anybody know of any apps which do this? I'm looking at Portfolio for iPad at the moment which looks promising.

    No.

  • How can we call a external webservice from sandboxed webpart?

    Hi,
    I need to call an external webservice from sandboxed visual webpart in 2013. And that webpart would be used in office-365 site. Please let me whether it is possible or not.
    Thanks,
    Arindam

    Sandboxed solution server code can't call an external web service.  There are ways to write a sandboxed solution that calls a web service using client side code.  Here's a sample of a silverlight application deployed via the sandbox that can call
    an external web service.

    Can anyone help please? My daughter dropped her ipon touch 4g into water which resulted in it being ruined. We bought her a new one three days ago and she has just dropped it and cracked the screen!!!
    Cany anybody tell me, are we able to use the perfect screen from the water damaged ipod to replace the broken one on the new ipod or, would the water damage have ruined the screen too?
    Thanks in advance

    Your very best option would be to take it to an apple store and exchange it for an alike model which can be a refurbished, or new unit. The repair/exchange price is about 99USD.  http://support.apple.com/kb/index?page=servicefaq&viewlocale=en_US&geo=United_St ates&product=ipod&select=REPAIR_PRICING
