Can a metadata preset append instead of overwrite?

I Googled and then searched this forum with no luck. Thought this would be answered already:
Is it possible for a metadata preset to only overwrite a field if it is empty? I'd like to apply a preset to many files at a once but have it preserve data if it already exists.
I'm sure I can do this with external tools like ExifTool but would prefer an all-LR solution if possible.

Yes.
It'd be an easy plugin. Are you sure you don't want to use it as an excuse to get your feet wet with the new PluginGenerator/Framework?
Go ahead and slap me if I start pushin' too hard... ;-}

  • Data load into Essbase (append instead of overwrite)

    Hello,
We are loading data from oracle table to target Essbase cube. How do we handle ODI data load to append instead of overwrite last value?
Ex: We have data source with M:1 mapping, so we incoporated case statement [Case when Group A, B, C then D] is there a setting in ODI that allows data to append (add) instead of overwriting?
Currently, the data value in C is loaded into D instead of A+B+C into D.
    Thanks.

You can put the CASE WHEN in the target mapping and still use a load rule, a load rule does not have anything to do with what you do in the target mappings.
    Cheers

  • File is appending instead of overwrite.

    Hi
We have a file interface with overwrite settings. When tested from ECC the file is being overwritten as per the settings. When retested the same, the file is being appending data. The same is also tested from another Quality system and there also it is working fine.
Would like to know any specific reason for this behaviour and any solution for the same??

  • Is-it possible to delete metadata presets ?

    Hello,
In the Library module, I can create metadata presets with the IPTC fields.
But, is it possible to delete the presets ?
    Thanks for any advice.
    Gilles.

Look at the FAQ entitled "Where do I find the Lightroom "Preferences" and "Database/Catalog" files?"
It will tell you where the presets files are stored on your system.
    Then:
    Close Lightroom.
Use your OS software to go to the location of the presets and delete the one(s) you want to get rid of.
When you re-start LR the presets will be gone.

  • Metadata presets dysfunctional

When I click on Metadata Presets, I no longer get the "Default" and "Edit Presets". Instead, they have been replaced by Adobe's long list of preset templates starting with "Black and White Presets". I have uninstalled and reinstalled the program to no avail. I have deleted the Library and unintalled and reinstalled to no avail. I have tried items on the Metadata listed on the tool bar to no avail. What can I do to get back the capability of editing and saving a custom preset?

Thank you, this has restored the presets but I now have to re-write the presets to all the photos in my catalog! I had to restore the program after restoring an image of my c drive [installed LR4 after the image was created] and I did not re-check my preferences.
Moral of the story: not only back up data regularly also back up system images regularly!

  • What are the different metadata fields for in the Metadata presets?

The metadata preset box has a comprehensive array of metadata sections and fields. I just don't know what a lot of them should be used for. Some of them appear to duplicate headings in other fields, albeit with different names.
Can someone tell me what kind of information the following fields are meant for?
    Basic Info
Label - I've seen this used for the authors credit. The "Creator" and "Copyright" fields seem to take care of this though. Should it be used for something  else?
    Copy Name - ?
    IPTC Content
Headline - I've read that this is for describing the content. Isn't the "Caption" field in Basic Info for this?
    IPTC Subject Code - ?
Description Writer - The author/creator? If not, who?
    IPTC Image
Intellectual Genre - Same as "Category"?
    ISO Country Code - ?
    IPTC Status
Title - This may seem obvious, but the title often appears in the caption.
Job Identifier - I'm assuming this is for applying information pertinent to the author's filing system. If I'm wrong, what is it for?
    Instructions - as above?
    Provider - Author again?
    Source - Author yet again?
I'm sure there will be those who will argue that some or even most fields can be used for whatever information we wish to put in. My point is that they must be there for specific reasons.
Oh yes, before someone points me in the direction of the IPTC website, I've been there already and it was full of gobbledygook!
    Thanks in advance.

Also on the IPTC photo metadata site is a more approach able guide to using the fields:
    http://www.iptc.org/std/Iptc4xmpCore/1.0/documentation/Iptc4xmpCore_1.0-doc-CpanelsUserGui de_13.pdf
This guide was written for the original 1.0 IPTC Core specification, but I think it covers most of the terms you want to understand better. Specifically, it talks about the different roles the Headline, Title and Description (aka Caption) play as well as the Creator, Source and Provider.
    Examples:
    Headline:
A headline is a brief publishable synopsis/summary of the contents of the photograph. The Headline term should not be confused with the Title term.
    Description:
The Description field, often referred to as a “caption” is used to describe the who, what and why of what is happening in the photograph. If there is a person or people in the image, this caption might include their names, and/or their role in the action that is taking place. If the image is of a location, then it should give information regarding the location....
Here are three other places you might want to look for or ask about how other photographers are using the metadata:
    The PhotoMetadata.org web site
    http://www.photometadata.org/
    David Rieck's ControlledVocabulary.com
    http://www.controlledvocabulary.com/
-See Resources > CV Forum to find the Yahoo! groups forum for the site.
Peter Krogh's, the DAM Book site and forum:
    http://www.thedambook.com/
    http://thedambook.com/smf/index.php
The "Label" field is used to control the colored label that's displayed for the file in Lightroom, Bridge and (when opening multiple files) in the Camera Raw plugin. Both Lightroom and Bridge ship with default values mapped to the six-standard label colors. In Lightroom choose the Metadata > Color Label Set > Edit... to change them. In Bridge, use the Label panel in the Bridge preferences dialog.
You can really use this for whatever you need, but unlike the other terms defined by the IPTC, you should not necessarily expect others to use them for the same thing. Putting the photographer's name there probably doesn't make much sense. I know one Photographer who's assigned the name of a stock agency to each of the label colors so he can track what file was sent to what agency.

  • Is it possible to edit an import metadata preset?

I am using the windows version of LR and have made a metadata preset which I use when importing photos. I would like to change this preset but cannot figure out how to do it. Is this possible or do I need to make a totally new preset?

I vaguely recall that the next release of Lr will allow better template editing.
In the meantime edit the template in a text editor. You can find the location by consulting
    this TechNote.
You can also use the Metatdata panel in the Library module to edit the metatdata of a "junk" photo. Then click the Preset drop-down icon and choose "Save as New Preset...".

  • Is it possible to create a Metadata Preset from Mac to use on PC?

I'd like to sent some metadata presets to a friend using a pc. Can she simply add the presets or are they incompatible between mac and pc? If it's possible, I'd like to tell her the location where she has to place them, but I don't have a pc. could someone tell me the path on the pc side?

    Yes, they are compatible.

That depends on the O/S she uses, file locations for different O/S's are shown here. Best is to go to Preferences and click "Show Lightroom Presets Folder". Within the folder shown, there is a a folder called "Metadata Presets", which is where they have to be copied to. On Win7/Vista, this is "C:\Users\[user]\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\Lightroom\Metadata Presets\".

  • Metadata Presets in Import  Photos dialog

Can anyone tell me how to remove unwanted metadata presets from the drop-down list that appears in the "Information to Apply" section? I forgot to name one and it appears irritatingly as "Untitled Preset", apparently for ever more.

    Go to <br /><br />Mac<br />~/Library/Application Support/Adobe/Lightroom/Metadata Presets/<br />Where "~" is your user directory.<br /><br />Windows XP<br />C:\Documents and Settings\<your_username>\Application Data\Adobe\Lightroom\Metadata Presets<br /><br />And you should find it there. Rename the file then open it in a Text Editor and Rename the Name inside it. It should now appear correctly in the menu<br /><br />Richard Earney<br /><br />--<br />http://inside-lightroom.com

  • Assigning "hierarchical" keywords using Batch Change or Metadata Preset

Part of my keywording structure looks like this:
    Men
         Basketball
         Golf
         etc.
    Women
         Basketball
         Golf
         etc.
I know that true hierarchical keywords don't exist in Aperture. But when I assign keywords using the Keyword Controls or dragging from the HUD, the parent (men or women) is "attached" so you can search for the one you want.
I want to be able to assign the proper keywords using Batch Change or in a metadata preset during import. But I have yet to find a way to do this. Is there some hidden syntax for this? Or is it one of those impossible things in Aperture's current (and rather limited) keyword handling?

    You're welcome.
A second copy of the iPhoto library on a second drive is always good. I once lost my backup drive and the system drive at the same time, because a lightning caused a power surge that killed both my macs system drive and the connected backup drive. I was lucky to have a bootable clone of the system drive as a second backup.
I like this version of the quote you cited:

  • Metadata Preset Edit - changing or removing keywords does not work

I can't find this documented so I sure hope this is not a duplicate. Sorry if it is.....
Existing metadata preset contains various fields populated and checked including keywords both populated and checked. When I edit the preset by either a)removing and unchecking the keywords or b)changing the keywords and leaving it checked followed by Done followed by Save to "Save changes to the preset Preset Name? ..... the changes or removal actions are ignored such that if I immediately Edit the preset, the keywords are back the way they originally were.
Changes to any other fields in the preset are reflected properly upon subsequent edit. Only keywords seem to be "not changeable or not removable".

  • How to edit/ delete metadata presets

How do I edit a current metadata preset? it look like I only can save the changed setup under a new name, but then how do I then delete the first preset?
    LR Windows
    br,
    Bo

This is a long standing request as other such places have this in LR. it is a catch-up item, I am sure.
On a Mac the presets are in: user/library/application support/adobe/lightroom/metadata presets from there you can delete them, or edit in any simple text editor (no rich text).

  • Metadata presets, deleting erroneous names

Metadata Preset list contains five metadata file-names I created... three of those are in error. How does one delete these list-names? I've right-clicked, left-clicked, file-searched, etc... and continue to draw a blank.
    Thank you

    Bogdan, I appreciate your input.
Here's what I continue to find with Windows' Vista Ultimate:
under (username)-Pictures-Lightroom exists two folders plus one I've found before named "Lightroom Database" (about 43KB). It is not a "Folder," but carries the "LR" designation. Clicking on the file simply opens Lightroom where I was last working. But there is no way to get into that Lightroom Database file, nor any listing of previously created metafile listed names.
While Lightroom Database is highlighted, under "Properties" the Attributes "Read only" and "Hidden" are unmarked.
I remain totally baffled. While in Lightroom and working with an image I can create a NEW "Save as New Preset" Metadata profile/name... but I can't delete any of the five I previously created.

  • Metadata presets

I have multiple metadata presets. In library view, I select one of the custom presets, and apply it to a photo or selected photos. This works fine; however, when I move to another image the preset reverts to 'None'. Is there any way to prevent this from happening.
I have checked this forum about setting a preference for medadata presets, but it does not seem to exist. Am I doing something wrong?
    Thanks for your help!
    Bill

No, you can do one, select all the others as appopriate and hit 'Sync Metadata' button. bottom right!
    No need to copy/paste.

  • Metadata Presets... Erratic behavior and how to?

I often struggle with the Import presets. Seemingly only during Import one can make a new preset, and I do have cases of more than one identical named preset, because LR does not ignore trailing blanks in preset names (Ouuuu! Woof Woof!)
But, how can edit exiting preset of Metadata?
When I have images without any EXIF in them, because come from celluloid old good film, how can declare a camera and lens? I tried to crack this, but neither experiments nor the manual were of help.
    Thomas

"When I have images without any EXIF in them, because come from celluloid old good film, how can declare a camera and lens? I tried to crack this, but neither experiments nor the manual were of help."
Metadata can contain many sections, where EXIF section is just one of them. Another one (you may be interested of) is Makernote section -here's where lens data is written.
Now, you cannot just enter some lens data -Makernote section must be there (in image file) first. Bad news: Makernote is normally written into image file by camera only. Good news: it is possible to "copy" Makernote from one file to another. Once you have Makernote in your image file, you can edit lens data at will. I've tried that and it works.
About camera description in metadata... just write/create "Model" tag in XMP section, where you describe your camera. If using ExifTool (which I highly recommend), you write:
    exiftool -xmp:model="My SLR Camera" MyScan.tif
    -simple as that.
