Can a Mid-2009 iMac (2.93 GHz Core i7) recognize a 3 TB HDD?
I have a mid-2009 iMac with an almost maxed-out 1TB drive. As it turns out, Apple is replacing these drives as part of a recall, but clearly I need a larger capacity drive anyway. I'm looking at 2TB/3TB Seagate Barracuda XT HDD from OtherWorldComputing. Will this iMac handle a 3TB drive, or is it a safer bet to go with the 2TB?
Yes, it will handle it, but the Thermal sensor is the issue...

Since the late 2009 iMacs came out, replacing the hard drive has caused the internal Hard Drive Fan to start running at around 6000RPM.
This is due to Apple replacing the external Hard Drive temperature sensor with a proprietary firmware and using the drives internal sensor.
Replacement drives do not contain the firmware to deliver temperature data on the temperature sensor cable.
When the iMac does not receive a good signal from the hard drive it puts the fan at full speed to protect the drive.
If you replace your drive, your iMac will initially seem fine, but soon the fan will begin to speed up to full speed. Resetting the SMC (System Management Controller) will have a temporary effect, but again the fan will speed up.
Fixes people have used in the past included:
Using smcFanControl and the terminal to set a MAX speed for the fan and writing scripts to start this after every sleep/restart.
Shorting the temperature sensor cable (Not a possibility on 2011 iMacs) this tricks the iMac into thinking the drives temperature is very low, hence slow fan speed.
Both these fixes are less then perfect and leave the drive in a dangerous situation with no protection from overheating.
Another option people try is other Fan Control software. These programs will not work for this particular issue as they often only control the base speed, and if they do control the fans actual speed they rely on the temperature reported by the sensor which is now incorrect.
HDD Fan Control
HDD Fan Control works to fix this issue by reading the drives internal temperature using the S.M.A.R.T protocol and set the fans actual speed to a value good to protect the drive.
It runs at startup and continually to always control the fan correctly, prevent the loud fan noise and protect the drive from overheating

Running a mid 2009 iMac on 10.7.5, 3 gb memory, 320 gb hd.
Suddenly the computer stoped reading DVDs and the only time I can read a CD is if I restart. Quite often when I insert a CD it gets stuck and I cannot get it out until I restart and it shows up on the desktop where I can then eject it.
I have checked and double checked the finder prefs and all looks normal showing a check mark on CDs,DVDs etc. (the ones I want to show up on the desktop)
I have reset the PEAM, repaired permissions with both the disk utility on the computer and the disk utility when I start up in the Recovery Disk. I did notice that sometimes the permission repeat the same correction several times before it moves on, and sometimes it doesn’t. I have Windows installed on a partition but I keep it unmounted until it is needed for my wife’s work. The dock seems to be just fine and all the apps seems to run just fine. When I insert a photo CD iPhoto does not open but when I insert a music CD iTunes does open.
Also, most every time I open iPhoto it takes a long time(sometimes as long as 2 minutes) for it to load.
Sometimes my Mail (Mail 5.3) does not post new mail but most of the time it does.
Once and a while it seems like the computer slows way down but then it seems ok ten minutes later.
All of these ‘things’ seemed to have happen suddenly and I have not downloaded anything from the internet in some time.
Of course the warranty and extended warranty are both no longer in effect having had this computer for more than three years.
I am running Java and Adobe Player because some of the sites I go to a lot require both.I believe that insufficient RAM may be the source of some of your problems. If you have a RAM of somewhere 4 to 8GB, you will experience smoother computing. 3GB doesn't seem right, so you might want to learn more by going to this site:
http://www.crucial.com/store/drammemory.aspx
I don't know what know what's happening with your optical drive, but it seems you use your drive quite a bit. In that case, look into a lens cleaner for your machine. It's inexpensive, works quite well.
I hope you'll post here with your results! -
I have a mid 2007 iMac. 2 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 4 GB 667MHz DDR2 SDRAM, OSX 10.9.5. I attempted to do the latest update and got the message: Start up disk is full. Delete files. How do I do that?
Freeing Up Space on The Hard Drive
1. See Lion/Mountain Lion/Mavericks' Storage Display.
2. You can remove data from your Home folder except for the /Home/Library/ folder.
3. Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQ on freeing up space on your hard drive.
4. Get an external hard drive on which to store some of your files after which you can
erase the data from your internal drive to free up space.
5. Also see Freeing space on your Mac OS X startup disk.
6. See Where did my Disk Space go?.
7. See The Storage Display.
You must Empty the Trash in order to recover the space they occupied on the hard drive.
You should consider replacing the drive with a larger one. Check out OWC for drives, tutorials, and toolkits.
Try using OmniDiskSweeper 1.8 or GrandPerspective to search your drive for large files and where they are located. -
How to install mavericks on mid 2009 iMac without internet access
I want to upgrade a mid 2009 iMac from Snow Leporard to Mavericks. The computer does not have internet access. How can I get an installation disk?

Dec 14, 2014, 07:21:27 PM Self test - passedPlease describe the problem in as much relevant detail as possible. The "etrecheck" fad hasn't made that step any less necessary. The usual results of posting etrecheck output on this site without a full description of the problem are very poor.
The many "failed" warnings that etrecheck sometimes spews mean nothing. Those warnings are not a reason to reinstall the OS, or to do anything else at all. They should be ignored.
The better your description of the problem, the better the chance of a solution.
For example, if the computer is slow, which specific actions are slow? Is it slow all the time, or only sometimes? What changes did you make, if any, just before it became slow? Have you seen any alerts or error messages? Have you done anything to try to fix it? Most importantly, do you have a current backup of all data? If the answer to the last question is "no," back up now. Ask if you need guidance. Do nothing else until you have a backup. -

Is it possible to create a system software disc on a USB flash drive to start Apple Hardware Test on mid 2009 iMac running OS X 10.9?
Hopefully, those dvd's are the correct ones. If not, it's possible to download the AHT for many models from Apple, & either make a bootable drive, or replace the files in the hidden /System/Library/CoreServices/.diagnostics folder.
see Download and run Apple Hardware Test (AHT) from a USB drive.
There are additional download details in the comments for some later models. -
I want to transfer my entire iTunes "folder" from a newer iMac 3.06 GHz Core 2 machine running iTunes 10.7 to an older iMac running OSx 10.5.8. How best to do this and keep all my data, tags and covers in tact?
Firstly, time to get rid of the 2 x 512MB FBDIMMs in there, they add more heat and use more watts then they add to the system. If you need more, and 4 or 8 DIMMs is ideal, Amazon has 2x2GB sets $22 - about 1/50th what I paid for 1GB new.
Buy a 250GB Samsung EVO SSD $129
Pick up Carbon Copy Cloner http://www.bombich.com to clone the system to the SSD
A sled adapter for the SSD from Icy Dock $14 Amazon.com
7-8 years overdue for new system drive! amazed it lasted this long. An SSD plus some WD Black 2TB drives or larger should do the trick.
you can also put the SSD in the lower optical drive bay and use one of the two ODD "spare" SATA ports for the SSD - an SSD is the best way to improve the performance of our old Mac Pro 2006-7 models.
When you downloaded the Lion installer that was when to create a flash type installer with Lion DiskMaker.
If you have put in a new-ish graphic card then OS X 10.6.0 may not support it. -
My Mac experience so far...17" iMac 1.83 GHz Core Duo
I bought this iMac the first of December as CompUSA was closing out the last of their older iMacs. It was a great deal at $900 with Apple Care included for 3 years. I upgraded the RAM and am running a second monitor. I also added a 250 GB Iomega USB drive.
All in all its been great so far with a few exceptions.
1. My mouse gets stuck in right click mode. I have to unplug it and then its back to normal again.
2. The keyboard space bar sticks about 1 out of every 10 strokes. This is annoying especially with a brand new keyboard.
3. My CD's and DVD's won't eject. The drive tried to kick them out but due to some sort of resistance it never kicks the disk out. If I press the two layers of the display together...front and back it takes the pressure off and the disks pop out just fine. This seems more like a case that isn't sealed up tight.
4. I have or had a dead pixel. It was green but when I rebooted it seems gone. Fingers crossed on this one.
I've been holding off on taking it in for repair. I hate the idea that I have to loose it for a week when its mstly brand new.
If anyone has any similar problems or can suggest any fixes for any of the above I'd appreciate it.
17" iMac 1.83 GHz Core Duo Mac OS X (10.4.8) see aboveBrett - A sticky mouse and keyboard as well as an optical drive that doesn't eject all adds up to more than an open box unit to me. I strongly suspect that you got a demo unit. Doesn't really matter, you did get a pretty good price, especially with a 3 year warranty.
You need to take the computer to a service center or call AppleCare. The keyboard and mouse can be handled via mail easily but I'd strongly suggest taking the computer itself to a service center to be looked at. -
(using latest AE CC2014)
I have a MacBook Pro Retina Mid 2012 with 2.7 Ghz Core i7 processor 16GB memory Nvidia GeForce GT 650M 1024MB processor, doing some heavy AE renderings and just realized that this machine says it has 8 Cores? I'm had not yet turned on Multprocessing in Preferences Should I be?
Should I leave 1 or 2 cores for other applications?
RAM allocation per background CPU is defaulted set to 3GB
Also for Adobe Media Encoder: in preferences under Video Rendering /Rendere it is set at Mercury Playback Engine GPU Acceleration (OpenCL) is that the best config for this computer? How much ram?
The best settings depend on what you are working on. Here are mine for a nearly identical system:
It's usually best to keep memory blocks in 4GB blocks. If my workflow is more in other apps I'll switch out other apps to 8 gb if things start to slow down. Because of my usual project settings I keep MP turned off on this machine, but for some projects I'll turn it on. If you decide to experiment to MP then keep an eye on the Actual CPU's that will be used and make sure the numbers add up. Other applications and Actual Cores should add up the the total in your system. -
Can an early 2009 iMac be used as an external display?
Can an early 2009 (I think the one released in March) iMac be used as an external display? I think the late 2009 one does but not too sure about mine.

What OS can I upgrade my iMac 2.66ghz Intel Core 2 Duo to?
I currently use my old iMac as a netflix, web tv set . . . I am having issues with browsers etc., an am wondering what the latest OS I would be able to use on this machine? It is currently running 10.5.8 (iMac 2.66GHz Intel Core 2 Duo) Thanks!!
First you need to research all the problems people are having with the higher OSX versions, & make sure you have a bootable clone of what you have just in case.
then you must get 10.6 if they still have it, install it & update to 10.6.8 so you have the App Store to buy & download the huge 10.10 Installer.(10.10/Yosemite is the only download avalable now without specially calling Apple).
Snow Leopard/10.6.x Requirements...
General requirements
* Mac computer with an Intel processor
* 1GB of memory (I say 4GB at least, more if you can afford it)
* 5GB of available disk space (I say 30GB at least)
* DVD drive for installation
* Some features require a compatible Internet service provider; fees may apply.
* Some features require Apple’s MobileMe service; fees and terms apply.

Any suggestions are most definitely welcome! Do you think it would be worth it or would I be better off going with an external? Thanks!
If your optical drive doesn't work, take your computer to an Apple Store and they'll change it for another optical drive. That's the safest way because you can't modify the iMac (except the keyboard, mouse and RAM)
