Can a pdf link to an external file

... so changing the original file changes the pdf?
I've got a dinner riding on this. My co-worker says don't change that Illustrator .eps file - all our pdfs are linked to it! You'll  mess them up!
I say - what? no way...  pdf's aren't linked to external .eps  files (that we imported into Quark and made pdf's) They are standalone docs. I did a test and can't replicate what he says. Using high-res print pdfs.
What you say?  Am I buying dinner?

Thanks for the input guys.
I've been making pdf's well over 10 years but use only a narrow set of pdf types. I know there is a range of options and things you can do with pdf's that I've never done. This co-worker is actually my boss and he's adamant this has happened to him, pissed that I'm doubting him and won't let me improve a workflow system because of it.
Maybe there is (or was in the past) some type of pdf that can link to an external file and can be changed by revising the external file?

  • Adding a link to an external file into SQL table

I would like to add a link to an external file (picture stored on my local hard drive) into SQL table. Then use C# to query data from SQL table and export to Excel.  I got everything working ok except the link to external file. I would like to export
this link to Excel and user can click on the link to open the file. How can I accomplish this? Thank you very much in advance for your help!

In that case the Filetable feature could be of interest to you. With this feature the file can be part of the database, and still be accessible from tools outside SQL Server.
I don't really have any good examples handy, but if anyone knows of a good blog post that could help Nhan, please feel free to add.

  • How can I place text from an external file as an updatable link?

Currently we create presentation documents InDesign. Each presentation page is a linked Illustrator file (the file contains drawings and description texts). We write the text in Illustrator instead of over it in InDesign because multiple designers/writers will work on each page. We have text that sometimes appear on multiple pages, this text has previously been copied and pasted into each Illustrator file that it needs to appear in, this is inefficient and prone to error.
Is there a way to link to a text file in Illustrator that remains updatable? I poked around here and found information relating to Variable Data – things similar to Data Merge in InDesign. This isn't the solution I'm looking for however. It seems like a plugin or script is the solution.
    much appreciated
    Ray

I have to imagine that you have good reasons for structuring the workflow as you describe. However, this:
We write the text in Illustrator instead of over it in InDesign because multiple designers/writers will work on each page.
doesn't make sense to me. Between the two, InDesign, (particularly CS6), is far more capable of efficiently supporting a linked-single-source-of-text workflow than Illustrator...without any additional plugins or scripts.

  • Is it possible to link and update external files in a Indesign document when sharing the Indesign file in Creative Cloud with multiple users?

I am new to Creative Cloud, but have been using Adobe software for many years.
Now we are considering sharing an Indesign file with my project group using CC.
The Indesign file contains links to external files (one Illustrator and multiple .txt files); and we export the approved version to an Hi-Res PDF.
These .txt files are currently hosted on our internal server but have not been linked directly: we first copy them over to local desktop and update the links in Indesign before creating a new PDF.
Since these file can be update by different people we would like to keep them outside the Indesign and Illustrator files.
Is it still possible with CC to link directly to the files on our server in Indesign and see if there have been updated?
Or can they also be stored in the CC cloud? Or is there another method?
Thanks in advance for any help or suggestions
    Ronald

This will work if you all use the file syncing of the Creative Cloud desktop application and then you use the Collaborate option for the folder containing all the files. Then it will work on each of your desktops.
Links to files will not work in the browser when viewing the InDesign document from https://creative.adobe.com/files.

  • When interactive pdf opens in browser window can the pdf links open in separate windows

Problem is the pdf works ok when it opens in the browser window, BUT the links in the pdf don't open in separate browser windows, as they do when the pdf is downloaded as a file.
If pdf links can only open in separate browser window when the pdf itself opens as a separate file, the how do I email a pdf download link on a website.

    Hello Yesh,
you can open PDFs as a guest user (without authentification):
    1. Allow Guest Access (Admin -> Security Configuration -> Check "Allow Guest Access" and select a folder name).
    2. Copy your Report into this guest folder
    3. You can open the Report as PDF with a link like this:
    http://(bip-server-name):9704/xmlpserver/(guest-folder-name)/(report-name)/(report-name).xdo?_xpt=0&_xf=pdf&_xmode=4(&report-parameters)
Just replace the strings in brackets. You find a great description of the URL parameters in Tim Dexters Blog
    http://blogs.oracle.com/xmlpublisher/2006/07/accessing_xmlp_enterprise_repo.html
I didn't find an option to set the height of the PDF-Output for the guest user in the BIP-UI. Maybe I missed something. But you can manually edit the configuration file. It is located on your BIP server direcory in the subdirectory xmlp/XMLP/Users. Select the guest users subdirectory and edit the configuration file "user~.profile".
In this XML config file there is an entry "viewerHeight". In the Value-Tag you can enter the PDF output windows height in pixel (but unfortunaly not in % - this was the question of my original posting).
    Hope that helps...

  • How can i re-link .mpkg and .pkg files to hidden Installer?

I am near the end of the process of setting up my new Mac Pro (early 2009) eight core. Quite the wonderful difference from my "Mirror Drive Door" dual 1.25 GHz machine!
The Mac Pro came with Mac OS X 10.6.2 installed. I updated this to 10.6.6 via Software Update along with a slew of other updates presented there. I downloaded and installed a bunch of software. Finally, I was ready to install iLife 11 from the "CPU Drop-in" DVD that was on top of the box when the computer was originally unpacked.
Unfortunately, it wouldn't even begin the install. The "iLife.mpkg" file, when double-clicked, returned the error message "no application associated with this document". Hours of investigation reveals that NO .mpkg or .pkg file will open; doing a "get info" on the files reveals that those files have lost their link to the Installer app.
AND since the only installer I can find is hidden in /usr/sbin, there is no way I can re-link .mpkg and .pkg files to it via "get info".
I downloaded Pacifist and used it to open the "Mac OS X 10.6.6 Combo" package and re-installed the Combo updater. Much to my surprise, that didn't fix the linking issue.
I've logged in as root, but still can't re-link the package files to the Installer as /usr/ is still hidden. Is there a way I can temporarily "un-hide" the /usr directory so that "get info; open with" can see it?
I've started from the Mac OS X installer DVD and repaired permissions on the hard disk and "repaired" the hard disk. No luck there either.
I did a clean install of Mac OS X 10.6.2 to a different hard drive and applied the combo updater and the packages worked as expected there. So some software I installed or by running a slew of updaters via Software Update broke the link between packages and the Installer.
I'm sure that re-linking to packages to the hidden installer app can be done via Terminal and possible other ways, but I don't know how to do it.
Short of doing a complete Mac OS X 10.6 re-installation and update and having to re-do several days of other software installations and data transfers, I'm hoping someone will offer some solutions or tips on how to solve my problem.
How do I re-link .mpkg and .pkg files to the Installer?

Thanks for the reply. I know I had previously checked for the missing installer in /System/Library/CoreServices/ and I rechecked and it's still not there. But your tip spurred me to check the test 10.6.6 installation on the other hard disk and yes! It's there!
A quick copy from the second hard disk to my current hard disk and doing the "get info" trick and everything now works wonderfully. Only one day lost to trying to figure this out. Now that the problem is fixed, quite the relief.

  • Can a PDF link to a database (Excel) for information to display? (or similar?)

I have a template form I created and converted to PDF. It is for houses and each house has different specs that need to be listed. I want them to be able to easily update all the specs from outside of the PDF, like with an Excel file. Is there any way this is possible? If not, is there anything similar that can be done? He is really wanting a way to do this and I cant find a way of this even being possible with a PDF.
I realize the best way is to do this is within InDesign while in creation of the template with a data connection but the person Im doing this for only has Acrobat Pro and not InDesign.

Sorry, I was thinking of a pdf page with just a photo on it. There may be a simpler and more reliable way of doing this than the one I am suggesting, but I don't know it -- copying and pasting is possible, but it's not a very reliable way to work in Acrobat and sometimes cause more problems than it solves. But if you're adventurous, first you'll need to pdf the second photo and make sure it is the same size as the one that's being replaced. Then delete the photo from the original pdf file using the touchup object tool (you have to be careful to select the whole photo because it may be there in several pieces). Copy the new photo and paste it into the original. It won't paste exactly in the same place but will need to be positioned manually. Let me know if you ever find another way.

I have a PDF that has a photo that will need to change often. Normally I select to edit the graphic in photoshop and swap things out in there but the person Im doing this for doesnt have photoshop and isnt very computer savy. Is there a way to make that graphic link to one on their computer instead so there really isnt any editing involved?

  • Issue with PDF links and opened Adobe files

I have tested and IE 8 opens correct links inside PDF's.
When I open link in Mozilla or Chrome it will not work.
Is this related to Adobe Plugin which is installed inside Add-ons?
Strange is that link inside PDF shows the following link:resource://pdf.js/web/
After checking support issues there was quoted in the past:
The current Firefox 27 beta release still doesn't show the links properly using version 0.8.641, but the current Aurora 28.0a2 build does show the links to the Appendices properly using version 0.8.759.
So that would mean that when Firefox 28 gets released in March it will work for users with this Firefox version.

This is likely a problem with the way those links are coded in the PDF file, so the file may have to be saved again using different settings to make it work with PDF Viewers other than the Adobe Reader.

  • Linking Tables With External Files

    Hi,
is there any chance to link the cells of a table in Keynote with external text files like *.txt or *.xml?
    Thanks
    Michael

If the databases aren't changing (aren't updated regularly), you could dump the data from the table that has mixed 5 and 9 digit zips into either excel or access, Do your LEFT function in Excel/Access, and then join to this spreadsheet/table.
However, if these tables are constantly changing/updating it wouldn't be a preferred method, I know.
Sorry, i didn't mean to post this multiple times.

  • I can't automatically link my .avi proxy files to my .mov footage.

i try to use proxy media in adobe premiere cc but it is not WORKING! i have 400 gb .mov video data in a specific file structure (DSLR footage). now i made nice small proxy .avi files in an extra folder but with the same structure. that's just 25 gb and i want to use them in my RAM-Disk to get optimum speed... but i can't link the media to the proxy folder automatically. the only solution is to link every 800 single video files by hand!!! and i checked the box "relink others automatically". and i unchecked the box "file extention" i tried everything...  is this a known issue or maybe my fault?
    thanks in advance.

  • Need help linking to an external PDF file

How can I create a link inside my robohelp project that links to a PDF file that has NOT been copied into the project. I am looking for a link with a relative path in the event the files may someday need to be moved.
    Thanks

    Hi,
Microsoft's HTML Help documentation includes a script with which you can link to an external file. See:
    http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms644690(vs.85).aspx
This opens the external file in the topic pane of the Help viewer. If you'd rather open the file in its native application (Acrobat or Adobe Reader, in your case), you'd need to use a script like this one:

  • Dynamic link to external files

Is there a way to dynamically link to an external file?
Currently, when you link to a file, RH puts a copy of it in its
working directory and lists it as a Baggage File. Once that's done,
that file's dead; if the original file gets updated, I have to
manually re-link to that file so that it can update its Baggage
File version of the file. If the original file gets updated 30
times per week, that's 30 manual udpates I would have to do. (Or
once at compile time, but even that's a stretch to have to
    remember!)
Is there a way to link to that always-evolving file and so
that it only grabs a copy of it at compile time?

I don't think this is built in to RoboHelp - I don't have the
latest version, though. I take it this file is not HTML. What type
of file might make a difference in how any workaround is
    implemeted.
My first thought would be to make it always external but then
it has to be shipped with the CHM file. To link to an external
file, Micosoft has a javascript function called parser which will
find the correct path if it is installed in the same directory as
the .chm. This is explained in HelpWorkshop's help file. I could
send you the code if you'd like.
In using this, I have found that every file type responds
differently - some open directly in help viewer, some open their
own application, and some throw up a dialog that it might be
    unsafe.
Another option would be to have it edited while in your
RoboHelp project directory. i.e. consider that file the "original."
Unfortunately, I think you'd have to share the entire project to
allow someone to do this and that might open another can of worms.
    Good luck,
    John

  • Dynamic linking of external file

I try to link to an external file, and display it as the text file from oracle report. The path is determined at runtime. I searched on the Oracle Report's Help and found a hint on SRW.SET_HYPERLINK(...), but I couldn't get it work. Please help.
Thanks, in advance, for your help.
    Regards,
    TD

To link to a file dynamically, you need to use the "read from file" property against a column in the data-model.
If the filenames are stored in the database, you can use a simple query to create the column to return the filenames. Otherwise, you can use a PL/SQL formula column of type "char" to return the names.
Once you've created the column, set the "read from file" property to "yes" and set the format to "text". You can then create a field in the layout based on this column value.
The above, is the typical way of handling this. You can also use srw.set_field() to change the value of a field in a format trigger. This is less efficient but useful for some cases of dynamic values.
