Can a Power Mac G5 2.7 dual processor be run as a single processor?

This is in relation to my last question that I may have mis-worded,
Can I run a dual core, dual processor, as a dual core, single processor, and if so, how do I do this?
This is the info on;
About this Mac:
Power Mac           G5
Machine Model     7,3
CPU type             Power Mac G5 - 3.1
Number of CPU's  2
CPU Speed          2.7
Any Help,
Thank you.

Yes. (but yours is a dual processor, single core each processor)
It may be run as a single processor by disabling one processor.
While booted normally, in Utilities, open Terminal and enter the following:
$ sudo nvram boot-args="cpus=1"
To re-enable the 2nd cpu
$ sudo nvram boot-args=""

  • How do I get OS X 10.6 pon my OS X 10.5.8 Power Mac with only a dual processor

how do I get OS X 10.6 on my OS X 10.5.8 Power Mac G5 with only a dual 2 GHz PowerPc G5 processor. I do not see how or where to buy 10.6. Am wondering if it won't download to a powerpc 10.5.8...any ideas how I can do it?

Hi, we're out of luck, it cannot run on G5s.
10.5.8 is as high as any G4/G5 can go.
    10.6.x/Snow Leopard General requirements...
       * Mac computer with an Intel processor
        * 1GB of memory (I say 2GB at least)
        * 5GB of available disk space (I say 30GB at least)
        * DVD drive for installation
        * Some features require a compatible Internet service provider; fees may apply.
        * Some features require Apple’s MobileMe service; fees and terms apply.
    If it's a core Duo & not a Core2Duo, then it'll only run in 32 bit mode.
    Lion/101.7 System requirements
        •    x86-64 processor (Macs with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Intel Core i3, Intel Core i5, Intel Core i7, or Xeon processor.)
        •    At least 2GB of memory, I say 6 GB
        •    Latest version of Mac OS X Snow Leopard (10.6.8), with the Mac App Store installed
        •    At least 4GB of disk space for downloading, I say 50 GB.
Like Snow Leopard, Lion does not support PowerPC-based Macs (e.g., Power Macs, PowerBooks, iBooks, iMacs (G3-G5), eMacs).
Lion also does not support 32-bit Intel Core Duo or Core Solo based Macs. Rosetta is no longer available in Lion, which means Lion no longer supports PowerPC applications.

  • What kind of wireless card I need for my Power Mac G5 (late 2005) Dual 2 GH

    hi there,
I have for sometime now a "Power Mac G5 (late 2005) Dual 2 GHz PowerPC G5", and recently I have been thinking to get an Airport extreme wireless card with a bluetooth on it, which could work on my machine.
I have already try to deal with apple representatives and Apple sales people to give me a hand on the matter and so far is been a nightmare to approach this guys, tired of wasting time and effort, so that is way I am posting a topic on this section to see if you guys could give a hand on the matter.
All what I would like to know is what kind of wireless card I need for my Power Mac G5 (late 2005) Dual 2 GHz PowerPC G5 (version 10.4.11) and where I could buy one on line to install myself.
This is the mac unit I have.
    Dual 2 GHz PowerPC G5.
    Hardware Overview:
    Machine Name: Power Mac G5
    Machine Model: PowerMac11,2
    CPU Type: PowerPC G5 (1.1)
    Number Of CPUs: 2
    CPU Speed: 2 GHz
L2 Cache (per CPU): 1 MB
    Memory: 4.5 GB
    Bus Speed: 1 GHz
    Boot ROM Version: 5.2.7f1
    Thanks for you time.
    regards

You're welcome. Funny how Apple works isn't it? If it's any consolation, that Airport/Bluetooth card doesn't show up on the Apple U.S. store either. I don't think they ever intended it to be a user installable part, so perhaps that's why they don't offer it for sale. Do you have any Apple Authorized Service providers in your area? I'd think they'd be able to order the card as a replacement part.
Can you give a little more detail or a link to the gadget you're referring to? It sounds like a USB dongle to enable Wi-Fi, but that must be a third party solution, since I don't believe Apple ever offered something like that.

  • Can a power mac G5 ver.10.4.11 upgrade to Leopard 10.5

can a power mac G5 ver.10.4.11 upgrade to Leopard 10.5

Yes, but you will have to find an installation disk some place like Amazon or eBay, Apple no longer stocks it.
Be sure to buy a retail version, black face with large silver X, and not the machine-specific grey face disk.

  • Can a power mac g5 run on the same ram as a mac pro?

I have a Power Mac G5 and want to buy some new rame and i was wondering if it ran off the same ram from a Mac Pro, Specifically 1 RX8-PC3-8500E-7-10-DO ram type.

OWC is a great source for Mac RAM:

  • Power Mac G4 MDD MOBO and Processor Compatibility

I have two G4 MDD Motherboards. One MOBO is a 820-1474A (FW800) and the other is a 820-1476A (with just 2 FW 400 ports). I was told the 1476A is a 167Mhz buss and the 1474A is a 133Mhz buss board. I've tried installing a Dual Processor module PN 820-1472A onto the 1476A board but it doesn't work. It powers on, all the fans turn on, the processor gets warm and I see a RED light come on near the RAM slots but I don't hear that normal Apple 'GONG' sound during turn on. I know Apple built numerous CPU's (single and dual)for the MDD and some of these CPU's are not cross compatible. I'm really confused now with all these PN's and what CPU's can work on what MOBO. Where can I go to find out what PN's are compatible?? I tried two other single processor CPU's 1.25Mhz with the 1474A MOBO and I get the same results as I do with the 1474A MOBO. So now I have all these parts and no confidence on what is good and what is bad??
More Background -- I've got 2 brand new 512MB PC 2700 chips purchased from '4 All Memory' specifically for a G4 MDD, an Radeon ATI video card that works fine in one of my other G4's and my boot drive is an IDE 320G with OS 10.4.11 installed and the power supply is a API1PC36 (360W).

  • Power Mac G4 (1.25 Dual)

After installing my fourth hard drive, a 500G Seagate PATA/100, things were fine...I am running Tiger 10.4.9 on,my startup HD, a WD 250G ATA/100...other drives are SATA 320 and a 500 via OWC SATA card...I then cloned the startup to the 500G Seagate with carbon copy...but after a relatively short time of OK performance my startup drive started to act really sluggish...with 180 or so G still available I looked at the activities monitor...nothing unusual...ran my usual Mac Janitor...and shutdown...upon startup...nothing but a gray screen with apple logo...starting up with the CD and going into disk utility none of the HD's were available...totally grayed out...before I go any further...any suggestions?

In the meantime...I've installed a new battery...still upon startup w/cd my OS HD is not recognized...so I formatted the SATA 320 HD (zero) and installed a new tiger system...selected that as the startup disk...upon startup the mac cannot find the files...(blinking file icon and question mark)...because of this I cannot reset PRAM...so this is where its at now...new battery...a clean install of 10.4 on one of the SATA drives (PCI Card)...the busses in the box (ATA 100 = ATA 66) do not seem to come up on the profiler and hence the connected drives do not show up...like I've said earlier this used to work fine until lately the system got really slow and sluggish and finally kaput...thanx for your efforts...very much appreciate someone to share my problem with...

  • I can't install mac os 9 on my ibook g4 running 10.4.2

    Can anyone help?
    ibook g4   Mac OS X (10.4.2)

    Hi, jagehalperin -
    Welcome to Apple's Discussions.
No iBook G4 can boot to OS 9, however OS 9 can be used as Classic under OSX. Since that model can not boot to OS 9, no stand-alone OS 9 Install CD is usable (the installers on those will run only when the machine is booted to OS 9).
The solution is to install Classic from the original set of disks that came with the machine. One or more of these Apple KBase articles may help in doing that, depending which model iBook G4 you have and what version of OSX originally came with it -
Article #106294 - Mac OS X: How to reinstall Mac OS 9
Article #107383 - Mac OS X 10.2, 10.3: How to perform Mac OS 9 clean installation with Restore CDs

  • Power Mac G5 apple logo stuck and fans running full speed

    HI everybody,
I have been looking around in many forums and i noticed that a lot of people encountered a similar problem. Unfortunately untill now, nobody could give a real suggestion on how solve this issue.
In few words, my G5 (late 2005) 2gh 5gb ram 10.5.8 get stuck to the apple logo (grey initial screen) without going trough the start up. After a while the fans start to run full speed.
I have tried several solutions....but nothing so for.
I have reset the SMU button.
I removed all the ram slot and changed position.
The HD is ok and empty.
I even tried to warm the logic board with an hair drier as i read in a discussion...and i don't know why, the G5 could go trough the start up. Since it was active, i run the apple test. Result: All Ok
After rebooting successfully for 4/5 times, i switched it off. The morning after the G5 was dead again.
    I am kind of lost.
    Any suggestion?
    Tnx

  • Power Mac G5 2.5GHz PCI-X - No Video

Hey guys, I got a Power Mac G5 2.5Ghz Dual Processors with PCI-X.
I had couple of problems, but I isolated some of them.
So for one, I have 1GB sticks (all matching) PC-3200 DDR1 400MHz ECC-Registered RAM, none of them work... So I'm using non-registered RAM for the moment (1GB x 2)
The ECC RAM won't even start the mac, the apple chime doesn't play, and the LED flashes. Non-ECC RAM though the chime turns on. Which leads to the next problme.
There is no video output after the chime.
I have resetted the SMU with the little switch on the logic board. And yes, I have taken all of the cables out in the back then pressed it, and I also tried it leaving only the power cord in.
    I also tried Command + option + P + R. and Command + Option + O + F. Still nothing.
I changed graphics cards. Nvidia 6800 Ultra to a flashed Nvidia 7800 GS. Still nothing. Changed around the DVI Ports nothing, used VGA, nothing.
I also put in a Leopard DVD and held C on the keyboard.. nothing.
So the computer turns on and chimes, but htere is no video output...
There is only one thing I didn't try is replacing the lithium battery. I removed it turned it on, sitll nothing. I put it back on, there is still no video.
Only thing I think I have left is to replace the battery..
    can aynone please help me?

Hi there, the PRAM Battery can do strange things.
Can we assume you know the Monitor works?
    I also tried Command + option + P + R. and Command + Option + O + F. Still nothing.
    Might try this blind...

  • OS 9 disks for 2002 dual 1 Ghz MDD Power Mac

    Hello.
I own a 2002 MDD Power Mac - the 1 Ghz dual version -, but I don't have the original OS 9 disks. I'm from Romania, so it's quite hard to get hold of them. Is there a way that someone could help me? I'd really like to run OS 9 on the Power Mac, as my 333 Mhz iMac proves to be to slow.
    Thank you.

You can call Apple Customer Support 1-800-767-2775, provide the Serial Number and specifications of the Mac, and for a fee, a replacement set of system discs (if available), can be ordered.
However, the discs will be for the original version of OS, that was pre-installed, when the Mac was manufactured. In this case, it should include the OS 9.
Do you want to be able to boot into OS 9.x, or run OS 9.x in classic mode while booted into OS X. If you want to boot, you'll need the CD. However, if you just want to operate in classic (no OS 9.x boot) copy the complete System Folder containing OS 9.2.1 or 9.2.2 from another Mac. Then copy the folder to your Mac. You should now be able to run in classic mode.
     Cheers, Tom
