Can a Shape act as a selection tool?

Hello everyone                                                                                            Level: (Still a ...) Newbie  OS: Windows 7 64bit   Ps CS6
So, I am trying to make a fork (lemme tell ya, get;n those dang prongs are a B**** to get just right)
I want to use the Burn and Dodge tools to create Shading and Highlights
However, I need a Rounded shape selection for the ... uhhh "grooves" between the prongs in order to dodge and burn percisely
To my dismay the Marquee tools don't have a Rounded Rectangle nor could I find a way to set the corner radius of the Marquee Rectangle
The Lasso doesn't allow me to create what I need and even if I could use it to make it just right I couldn't make it exactly the same three different times.
Any suggestions/ideas are greatly appreciated.
Thank you

OMGoodness!!
Thank You so much Noel!
I would have never thought to have searched in the user manual for something like that
You've made my day!

  • Can't reshape rectangle with the "Selection Tool"

    Hi,
After updating Illustrator CC 2014 to the newest versions I can't reshape rectangles with the "Selection Tool".
Is this a new feature where you have to go to: "Shape > Expand rectangle" to be able to reshape it?

    ristogoertz,
I am afraid you have come across the Live Rectangle bug which is limited to the MAC versions starting with 10.7 and 10.8, but not 10.9 (Mavericks).
So a switch to Mavericks with a reinstallation might be the way to solve it here and now.
To get round it in each case, it is possible to Expand the Live Rectangles to get normal old fashioned rectangles, or to Pathfinder>Unite, or to use the Scale Tool.
A more permanent way round that is to create normal old fashioned rectangles, after running the free script created by Pawel, see this thread with download link:

  • I can't resize pictures with my selection tool anymore how can i reset it?

i can't resize pictures with the selection tool anymore, i can only move them please help.

Most likely, you inadvertently triggered Hide Bounding Box. To rectify, choose View > Show Bounding Box.
    (Cmd/Ctrl+Shift+B toggles this.)

  • Can no longer re-size with selection tool

For some reason, I can no longer resize objects with the selection tool.  When I click on an element, the handles appear, but remain solid.  When I select to scale the item, the whole item moves.  Any suggestions?

Cmd(Ctrl)-Shift-B which is the toggle for Show/Hide Bounding Box or maybe Cmd(Ctrl)-H the toggle for Show/Hide Edges.

  • Selection Tool suddenly acting like Direct Selection Tool during click-and-drag

    Hello!
This morning, my Selection Tool (the filled-in arrow) is acting like a Direct Selection Tool (the hollow arrow), but only when I click and drag on a group.  It ends up select the anchors within the group rather than the whole group itself.
I've checked my preferences, quit and relaunched Illustrator a few times, and nothing seems to fix it.  The problem briefly went away a few minutes ago, but came back when I quit and relaunched for good measure.
It's happening in Illustrator CS 5.1.  I have CS6, and that version works fine, but I'm waiting on some plugins to be updated for it, so I'd like to use CS 5.1.  I'm also running the latest Suitcase Fusion 4.
Any input on this would be appreciated.  Thanks!

Does the cursor appear correct, do you have any other keys depresessed?
The CMD key will make selection tool into direct slection. What OS are you running, update as there was a modifier key problem through 10.6.5 - 10.6.7

  • Where can I find the colour range selection tool in Photoshop Elements 11?

Note: It is not under the Selection tab in the menu. This tool is very useful and Adobe help is making it very hard to find.

The Select>Color Range is only in the full versions of photoshop such as photoshop cs6.
As far as i know that's never been available in photoshop elements (from the factory sorta speak) except in version 3 using an action created in photoshop.
There are many other ways to make selections in photoshop elements.
As a side note and not really pertaining to your version of elements, years ago back in the pre os x days, there was a plugin for photoshop/photoshop le/pse 1 on macs quite similar in function to select>color range.

  • Why can't I move artwork with the perspective selection tool?

I created a carpet and decorated it with symbols. When I tried to place it in the perspective grid with the perspective tool, it wouldn't move. I can move it fine with the selection tool and there's a bounding box but nothing happens when I use the perspective selection tool.
    Need help. Thanks.

You have to make sure that one of the grids (Left, Right, Horizontal) is active.
Just check the widget that appears when you select the Perspective Grid Tool. You can click on those sides of the cube with the Perspective Grid or the Perspective Selection Tool to make one of them active. You can also press the key 1, 2 or 3 to make either of those grids active.
If you click on the circular portion outside the cube, none of the grids is active. Then you can't move the artwork with the Perspective Selection Tool. You can press the key 4 to make none of the grids active which is especially useful when you don't want your artwork to distort in perspective while still working with the Perspective Grid showing on the artboard.

  • Is there a way to automatically resize the text box to fit the text inside, without using the selection tool to resize the corners in Illustrator and Photoshop?

I'm wondering if there is a way where I can quickly resize a text box to fit exactly around the text inside, so pretty much the smallest the text box can go without being too small to fit the text? I know you can do this manually with the selection tool, but is there a button/command that automatically does this in one go?
    Thanks

Try this script. Save the page as .jsx the the "Presets>Scripts" AI folder. When you restart AI it will appear in the "Scripts" menu. Select the text block and run the script.
Thanks to Nathaniel Vaughn KELSO for the script.

  • Perspective Selection Tool not working

I can't figure out why the selection tool won't work.  When active, I can't grab an object to move it and the icon next to the selection arrow is a line with an arrow pointing to the left, like this
    <–|
    Any suggestions?

That is normal and the correct icon, showing you are on the left plane. Is your item locked or on a locked layer, or in a mask? Watch the appearance paeltte to tell you what type of selection you have.
Try drawing a new rectangle as a test to see what is working and what is not.
With the Perspective Selection tool, the active planes in the perspective grid are indicated by the following pointers.
    Left Grid Plane
    Right Grid Plane
    Horizontal Grid Plane
The keyboard shortcuts 1, 2, 3 switch you between planes

The short answer is No. But I see that Ray has given you an option.

  • Multiple Track Select Tool - Deselect one clip

On a Mac, I am using the Track Select tool with the shift key held down to select multiple tracks at a certain point. It keeps selecting one clip more than I want. How can I deselect that one clip and retain the others?

    Peter J Kovacs wrote:
You can just switch back to the Selection Tool and then SHIFT click the tracks you want to deselect.
Alternatively you can just use the Selection Tool to drag a window across the multiple clips/tracks you want to select. However, you must start dragging the selection window in the empty space above all the the track otherwise you'll just end up just moving a clip.

I think you mean switch back to the selection tool and the shift click the clip you want to deselect, not the track.

  • Direct Selection Tool - Shape Layers in Photoshop CC Issue

I just upgraded to CC and the first major road block is the new way the direct selection tool works. In my CS6  work flow I would use the direct selection tool to jump between shape layers within the document layer. Then once the correct shape was selected I would click drag select the anchor points I want to adjust. This seems to be impossible now in CC. You can still jump between shape layers but you have to be in "All-Layers" which really hurts when I want to click drag to select specific anchor points because it selects all shapes below it. And with Active-layer selected you can't jump between shape layers with the tool but you can click drag select anchors with out selecting and shapes below the layer. The basically cut functionality right down the middle…
Below I made a very simple video showing the issue (CS6 = first PSD and CC = 2nd PSD)
    https://www.dropbox.com/s/pjlvwzmli9ihczd/CCProblemBroadband.m4v
As you can see in CS6 I could fly between layers and adjust everything with out ever changing to another tool or jumping to the layers window… I can no longer do that in CC with out having the dumb issue of also selecting the layers below it, which I don't find useful 99% of the time. Is there a setting to make this work like it did in CS4-CS6???? In my line of work, we work a lot with shape layers and this is causing more time to my work day.
    Thanks

1000x this. My designs are 100% vector shapes, so if Adobe have changed this core behavior intentionally, they’ve just made my life a lot more difficult.
We should be able to use the Direct Selection Tool to select a shape layer (similar to how the Move Tool has done) by clicking on any visible pixel. But then we should be able to freely drag-select points on that shape (starting from any neutral area) without selecting other shape layers. This is how it’s worked since before I can remember.
Here’s why the two new selection modes don’t work:
Active Layers - I can no longer freely select any visible shape. Instead I’m forced to make a time-consuming roundabout to the layer palette, where I have to squint to find my shape layer, and activate it manually before continuing. (Hitting “V” to select a layer, then “A” to get back to the D.S. Tool is nearly as cumbersome. Plus, I leave off the Move Tool's auto-select mode.)
All Layers - Treats all my shapes as if they’re on one layer. Overlapping shapes are therefore impossible to work with -- mainly drag-selecting and deselecting points -- in situ.
We either need a “legacy” setting, or some way to constrain selection on drag, via a key modifier or something. This “all or nothing" thing doesn’t work for me... and apparently for others. Why would they change such a thing?
Or maybe there’s something I’m missing. Please let that be the case!

  • Selection tool not transforming rectangles but works fine with other shapes

I can't transform rectangle shapes with the selection tool.  I've already tried showing the bounding box (command+shift+B), but it still doesn't work.  I have no transforming issues with any of the other shapes, just the rectangles.  Please help!

  • Direct Selection Tool don't works cause points dissapear in shapes

    Good evening,
I'm using Photoshop CC under a Macbook Pro Retina Display (15 inches), I've noticed that since lasts updates, when I use the direct selection tool for chaning a shape trace the points that should appear for selecting each anchor dissapears, and there's no way to get them back (sometimes by closing the program and restarting fixes this issue).
The tool is working because when I clic somewhere over a shape it gets highlighted on layers panel, but I can't see the points and so, can't modify the shape.
Does this belongs to any option? (I know in Illustrator there's an option to see or hide the points, but don't know if in Photoshop goes the same way or not) or it's a bug from the last updates? (I would say that it didn't happen at the beggining). But as I use a lot shorcuts, sometimes I can make a misstake and press cmd + wrong key, so I think it could be the reason for this... but I'm not quite sure.
    Thanks in advice!
    EDIT:
I've seen that if I hide the "extras" (cmd + H) it hides the guides but also the points from shapes (that shouldn't be this way, right?) and even I can see them when I turn them on, I can't pick just one as I did in CS6 by using direct selection tool and pressing on just one point (at the beggining all of them are highlighted cause you've got selected the whole shape layer, but when you press one, it should get this highlighted and turn off the rest of them), and the only way to get just one point is to pan with the cursor and make a selection, passing over the points you want to highlight, but this is annoying cause if you've got any other shape below, it will select it as well.

1000x this. My designs are 100% vector shapes, so if Adobe have changed this core behavior intentionally, they’ve just made my life a lot more difficult.

  • Direct Selection Tool. PS CC crashes every time a shape altered. Suggestions?

I am currently using the latest version of PS CC - updated to the latest "bug fixes" and all.
Each time I go to use the direct selection tool, i select points of a shape, PS locks up, and quits automatically without fail.
Are there any suggestions as to what I can do to alleviate this problem? Thank you for any help

This is the only time it locks up?  What are your system specs and operating system?
Have a look at your GPU settings in Preferences > Performance?  Try truning off 'Use GPU Acceleration?  Also look in Advanced settings, and try changing those.  If this helps, then look at updating your video card drive from the card maker's website.
