Can a song crash iTunes?

I have a song I've been working on in GarageBand. When I play back the mixed-down track in iTunes, iTunes crashes. Not every time, and not in the same place in the song, but frequently. It's almost impossible to get through one listen.
It doesn't matter if I listen to the uncompressed AIFF or an MP3 (converted in iTunes). And it's not just one corrupted file. I've mixed the song down several times as I've been working on it, and the crashing persists even across these different versions.
This is the only song that crashes iTunes. I have been listening to plenty of other music by other artists, as well as my own music, also recorded in GarageBand and handled in the same way, and iTunes never crashes on any song but this one.
I am wondering if there's something peculiar about this particular song, such as frequencies or amplitudes of the sound waves, that iTunes can't properly handle. That sounds ridiculous to me, but the whole scenario — that one particular song, even different versions of it, can cause iTunes to crash — is pretty ridiculous.
I am using an 11-inch MacBook Air running the latest versions of Mac OS X (10.7.1) and GarageBand (6.0.4).

This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of this exercise is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login. Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode* and log in to the account with the problem. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
Be sure your Mac is shut down.
Press the power button.
Immediately after you hear the startup tone, hold the Shift key. The Shift key should be held as soon as possible after the startup tone, but not before the tone.
Release the Shift key when you see the gray Apple icon and the progress indicator (looks like a spinning gear).
*Note: If FileVault is enabled under Mac OS X 10.7 or later, you can’t boot in safe mode.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem(s)?
After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

I have the same problem described by vickgeo1981.  Just downloaded itunes 11.3.1.2 on new PC with windows 7.  Accounts are now set up ok and itunes let me download my music and new podcasts to this pc.  itunes told me I had to upgrade ipod nano software so I did that to 1.0.3 PC.  itunes shows the ipod when connected.  settings are to sync all Music and all podcasts.  sync appears to work and itunes shows the ipad contains the songs, podcasts, and playlists.  After disconnecting ipod from pc it shows no music and no podcasts.  I have tried more than 1 usb port on my pc.  I have restarted my ipod.  I have restarted my pc.  I have again reloaded my ipod software.  No change in the result.  sync appears to work.  itunes shows the content on its window of the ipod but no content on the ipod itself.

  • I can't copy purchased songs from iTunes onto my iPod on my new computer.

I have an HP Pavilion zd7000 notebook computer. It's used. It was given to me by a family member. I put my iPod software onto it. I can purchase songs from iTunes, and I can connect my iPod and play the music. However, when I tried to put a purchased song from iTunes onto my iPod, I was told that I wasn't allowed. Is there some sort of security thing I don't know about?

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
Are you sure your computer is authorized for this? This is probably your issue.
If you go to the "Advanced" tab on the top in iTunes, is there a "Deauthorize computer..." button or an "Authorize computer..." button? If there's an "authorize computer" link, then that is your issue. Authorize your computer, and you should be able to transfer iTMS purchased songs from iTunes to iPod.
For details, see this Apple article:
    About iTMS authorization and deauthorization

  • Not Possible to Purchase Songs without iTunes Application, right?

    Hi, Everyone,
I was just wondering if it were at all possible to purchase songs via an Internet browser, and then download them at a later time using the iTunes application.
I currently do not have my own Internet connection as I am out of town for a couple weeks, but would like to get new music. The only places I can find in this town that has Internet connection are some small cafes with free wireless Internet. However, the connections are problematic; in this case, it takes a long time (between 15 and 20 minutes) to search for one song, add it to the Shopping Cart, then buy it successfully. However, I can download songs very quickly. I am currently on a wired connection (not my laptop), and this connection is fine, so I was hoping I could purchase songs and then just download them using my laptop on a wireless connection.
    Thank you,
    Victor Ly

why would you want to risk your account info on a connection at a cafe somewhere on the street? and why would you wanna buy the songs now and download them later? ....... the songs are always there, they are not going anywhere. you can still buy and download them when you think the conenction is safe and fast.... also, you can not buy songs from IE and download them from itunes, you have to buy them from itunes in order to download them in itunes ............ you can still buy songs many places on the internet from IE, but you can not download them in itunes .... they are seperate.
you can import songs into itunes tho ... if you already have them on your computer, yes you can use the add files to library in itunes.

It has always been very basic to always maintain a backup copy of your computer for just such an occasion.  Use your backup copy to put everything back.
If you have failed to bakup, then you can transfer itunes purchases from an ipod: File>Transfer Purchases

  • Can you save your itunes and songs onto an external hard drive so that incase your computer crashes you will still have all your music?

Can you save your itunes and songs onto an external hard drive so that incase your computer crashes you will still have all your music?

The procedures below are for "moving" your library but as long as you don't delete it from your internal drive you are basically backing up.
iTunes: How to move your music to a new computer [or another drive] - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4527
Simple answer:  Copy your whole iTunes folder to the external drive.  For subsequent backups you might want to learn about cloning and using a tool that only does incremental backups of recently changed items rather than copying all your files each time.

  • My iPod wont display songs even though it syncs them and sometimes it crashes iTunes. How can i Fix This???

I have 160 GB iPod classic it worked fine for the first few months i had it now it wont sync, if it does sync it doent display the music, videoes, podcasts, etc.or it crashes iTunes, if on the off chance it doesn't do either of those things then it takes forever to sync, and it skips certain songs that worked a minute before on it and it rarely ever plays video. i tried restoring it, formatting it, troubleshooting it.so can anybody help???

If your iPod harddisk hasn't gone  kaput yet, then try my suggestion below or else send it to Apple, if it is still under warranty.
Antivirus has a tendency to freeze Itunes sync Operation with Ipod Classic, causing a timeout, which corrupt your Ipod filesystem, so all the freezing symptoms point to this problem.
    My suggestion.
Connect your Ipod to the PC and run chkdsk, to fix any iPod diskerror, then disconnect it, after checkdisk complete.
Disconnect your PC from Internet. (just to make sure no nasties creep into your system while you syncing.
    Stop the Antivirus program
Connect your Ipod to the PC
When Itunes Open up, Restore your iPod please, this is for iTunes to map correctly, to fix the corrupted filesystem.
When Restore complete, eject the iPod and reconnect again.
Sync your ipod, preferably manually Manage in small batches and disconnect after every batch, to check that all is well, since you got such a huge library.
When all sync is complete, and iPod disconnected start back your Antivirus and connect back the Internet.
    Good Luck!

  • Hard Drive Crashed: Can I re-download my paid for songs from iTunes?

Recently my hard drive crashed and took my library with it. Can I re-download my paid songs from iTunes?

Be easiest to restore from your back up.
You do make regular back ups of your important files, correct?
iTunes Store Terms of Service allows for only one download.
You could send an email to -> iTunes Store - Customer Service and grovel at their feet and beg for a redownload.
However, if granted (or not), I would highly recommend you immediately learn how & start to back up your computer.

  • Ipod classic latest version not recognized in itunes also downloaded 400 plus songs, can play them in itunes but can not download on to ipod any idears /

latest 6th gen 160 gb ipod not recognized in itunes, have done all the checks, has been confirmed in itunes sync, Also down loaded 470 new songs into itunes,Can play them, but can not down load back into my ipod, any thoughts? Question,

See my answer under "iPod 160GB not recognized". The steps I took to fix this problem include completely uninstalling and then re-installing iTunes 9.0.2, restoring my iPod to factory settings while in disk mode, following the Apple instructions of repairing the permissions (outlined in my other post), and even after all that my iPod "crashes" after syncing more than 300 or so songs. I hope that Apple will come out with a real fix for this problem soon. Best of luck.

  • Can't add songs to iTunes 10.4.1

Previously, I was able to add songs to iTunes by directly dragging files from any location to any iTunes playlist or the general Music section and this would automatically add the new songs to my library.
After the 10.4.1 update, I can no longer drag songs into iTunes to add to the library.
Attempting to drag and drop crashes iTunes (beach ball appears and I have to force quit).
The only way to add songs is to use the "automatically add to..." folder nested in the iTunes Media folder.
This makes adding songs a much longer process because I have to copy the files into the designated folder and wait for iTunes to automatically add them to the library.
Previously, when I was able to drag new files into a playlist and the files would be copied to the library's main directory, it made it easier to see—right away—the new files added to the library via the playlist, instead of having to deal with smart playlists.
    Does anyone have this problem?
Does anyone know how to fix this?
I have tried reinstalling iTunes already.

My problem originated from the fact that I have upgraded to LION.
My old Itunes library was still saved in a folder called previous systemd. (wel done software devellopers).
I have dived up my iTunes books and refreshed my knowledge and now in advanced settings of itunes specified the path to the library in this folder and have my whole 63 gig library back.
I have also a new program called PowerTunes and with this program I can make iTunes finding every music file or folder on my computer. So instead of me adding things in Itunes which for some reason is difficult now I let my new program find every piece of music ever installed on any dik connected to my computer.

  • My mac hard drive crashed. Can I restore my iTunes library from my iPod to my new hard drive?

My mac hard drive crashed, and had to be replaced. Can I restore my iTunes library from my iPod to my new hard drive? About 2500 songs, some from iTunes store, most from other online sources or my own CDs.

To restore non-purchased music on the iTunes Store to iTunes from the iPod, you need a third-party application as Senuti > http://www.fadingred.com/senuti/ You can use others, but this has worked perfectly for me

  • Can I download my iTunes library (from iCloud) in it's entirety if I have a hard drive crash?

Can I download my iTunes library (from iCloud) in it's entirety if I have a hard drive crash?

You can download the music from iCloud using the download arrows besides the songs - see the iTunes help:
Play or download songs from iCloud
You can play songs directly from iCloud, or you can download songs so you can play them when you’re not connected to the Internet.
If a song is available in iCloud, it has a Download button next to it.
To play the song, double-click it.
To download the song, click the Download button.
After you download a song to a computer, it remains in the computer’s iTunes library, even if you turn off iTunes Match.
To only display downloaded songs in your iTunes library, choose View > Hide Music in the Cloud. This also hides anyprevious iTunes Store purchases you haven’t downloaded.
