Can a T60 take advantage of 3GB/s SATA drive speed?

I want to put a larger SATA drive in my T60 and am wondering if the T60
can take advantage of the 3GB/s data transfer speeds of some of the newer drives.
Does anyone here know for sure?
Thanks.

only the new SSD can reach that speed, no platter based hdd in laptop can saturate the older SATA 1.5 bandwidth.

  • Can Logic 8 take advantage of the Xenon 8-core processors?

I'm considering refreshing my entire studio now that Logic 8 is out (hardware and all). Does anyone know if the program can take advatange of the new Xenon 8-core processors? I have heard that the difference between 8-core and 4-core is not noticable unless the software can take advantage of all 8 of the processors. It's a big price difference between the two and I don't want to spend the extra money unless there is clearly a performance advantage to the 8-core.

I can attest that I'm seeing excellent performance with Logic 8 on the current generation of 8 core. I'm not sure if anyone has proposed a 'standard' reverb count test ala the Pro Tools D-Verb test but just to give you an idea:
My previous computer was a G4 single 733 with an upgrade card that made it dual 1.8 GHz G4. 1.25 gig of ram. On that system I could run 1 realtime Space Designer in Logic 7 as along with quite a few other plug-ins, but definitely only 1 Space Designer.
On my current 8 core setup, at 44.1KHz, 64 samples buffer size I ran 60 stereo Space Designers (4 inserts apiece across 15 tracks) and each core was running about 66% (2/3). I got tired of inserting reverbs at that point but I think it's a good indication of the efficiency and processing headroom available with this setup. All graphics are fairly snappy as well.
I took the plunge into 8-core land early because there were a couple of projects that I just had to take and my poor G4 absolutely couldn't handle it anymore. While the next gen of processors may well give you even more punch, I feel this level of processing ability will certainly be enough to handle the current demands of my music projects for at least a couple of years:)

  • MSI PRO-E takes forever to autodiscover the SATA drives in RAID mode

If I change the bios from IDE to RAID, it takes at least a minute to find each SATA drive during the post.   Any ideas?  The bios is at 8.2 so I'm wondering if a flash to 8.5 would help.
    Thanks,
    lavesa

I flashed the bios to 8.5 and I still have the same problem.  These are older SATA drives so I wonder if it's a compatability issue.  Maxtor 6Y120MO drives.  They were fine on my old Gigabyte MB with SATA Raid.  They are at least 6 years old though.
If I leave the RAID type to IDE, the bios picks up one of the drives quickly.  These drives actually have the normal IDE power connectors on the drives.
    Any help is appreciated!

  • I can't install Win XP in a Seagate SATA drive

Hello, first i tell you that i am from Portugal so the english is not my first language
I have a MB MSI865PE LS and i recently buy a seagate 160 Gb SATA the drive is recognized in the BIOS and in the Win XP but when i try to make the SATA as a Win XP Bootable disk the computer do not boot from the disk, it make the first part of the Win setup allright and the SATA (The only HD Drive conected) is recognized in the setup and formated, but when the setup rebbot the computer to make the first boot in Win XP it goes every time to the CD ROM i try various BIOS setups and various Boot Sequence Setups and the F11 BOOT MENU and even when i disconect the CD ROM and the only drive is the SATA after the BIOS posts (The is always recognized in BIOS) the screen stays blank with the bliking cursor.
I read some posts and try some diferente solutions but i cant make the Win XP boot from the SEAGATE SATA :(((

  • Can PP CC take advantage of BOTH a discrete GPU and Haswell based iGPU?

Hi, I have a bit of a newbie question:
I have a system with an i7-4770K and a GTX 670, but I typically keep the iGPU turned off via the BIOS since I am only outputting video via the discrete card.
I was wondering if anyone knows if I turn the iGPU on (Intel HD 4000) if PP CC can utilize that in addition to the GTX 670 for processing power?
I realize that the GTX 670 is much more of a power house for calculations, but those have to come in and out via the PCI-E connection. Theoretically, there may be some advantage to using the on-board GPU for calculations as well.
    Does anyone know?
I would be willing to benchmark both conditions myself if no one knows. Can I use PPBM5 with PP CC?
    Thanks for your help,
    Ken

    Ken,
PPBM6 is a significantly better test for CC, particularly if you are wanting to see how your GPU can flex its muscles. Find it at ppbm7.com (no, it is not a typo, PPBM6 is at ppbm7.com ).
Last I heard, Bill was going to help put some instructions together (or a new script?) for running PPBM6 with CC, but I'm not sure if he got around to it yet. I had to do something special to get it working, but its been a couple of months and I do not remember what I had to do.

  • WHY DO APPLE APPS NOT TAKE ADVANTAGE OF AN 8-CORE'S SPEED?

I bought a new 8-core, 3Ghz Mac with 16GB of RAM because I always by the "best" when upgrading, so what I buy lasts as long as possible.
The unfortunate thing I discovered, is the FCP and Motion neither take full advantage of the processor speed.
Apple tells me there is a limit to the processor speed they will function - as well as the amount of memory.
This seems strange since Apple makes the "box".
I'd be content with all program dynamically sharing the "real estate" but right now the only advantage it being able to work in two apps at the same time. Since that doesn't happen that often, I'd trade that advantage for faster processing per app.
If anyone knows how to remove the “speed-limiter” for apps on a multi-proc Mac, please let me know.
    Dan

I appreciate the desire to purchase something that will last and has quality. Still, "best" is a very slippery concept and is often confused with "more stuff" and/or "more expensive stuff".
I'm reminded of the potential folly of the "I always get the best" attitude when I go out to dinner and the person deciding on the wine simply picks the most expensive thing they can find on the wine list. They did not consider the nature of the food (spicy or subtle, acidic or basic, etc) and how the wine will react. They just equated cost with quality. And while the most expensive bottle on the list may well be an extraordinary vintage, it also may be equally lost on the palates of the diners if it does not suit the food that evening.
Since "best" is term of relativity, that is, it references a comparison between things, the real question might be "best for what"? Best compared to what other things under what circumstances?
Did you define the tasks you wanted this machine to accomplish and investigate other options to accomplish these tasks? If not, how can you have decided this is the 'best' machine?
In the for what it's worth category, FCP has been and will likely remain for the near future a 32bit program. It is in the nature of 32bit computing to be limited to 4GB of addressable RAM. Apple does not decide this. This is just the way it is.
Eight processor machines used to be the realm of supercomputers. The OSs of those rarified beasts spent enormous time and computing resources simply keeping track of what its processors were doing - keeping them fed and cleaning up the messes when things get out of sequence. Oh, and the programs were written and compiled for that particular machine as well. OSX is not such an OS and FCP is not such a program. They are designed to run on a range of machines, from single processor PPC G4 Powerbooks all the way up to your mighty intel octobeast. Eventually we'll have 64bit OSs and applications - but backward compatibility and consumer based (aka cheap and as broad a market share as possible) economics limit this movement.
Enjoy your machine, it is very capable. You need to understand how those capabilities can be made manifest. Get an ATI X1900 card and learn how to use as many programs at the same time as possible. If you use Compressor, learn how to set up virtual clusters. You are correct, it is a machine that you should be able to use for a long (in "computer years') time.
    Good luck.

  • Can G4 PowerMac MDD take advantage of SATA II hard drive speed?

A PowerMac G4 MDD has 33Mhz PCI slots and a 167Mhz bus -- correct? Can this architecture take full advantage of a PCI SATA II controller card (if it exists for a Mac) and a connected SATA II hard drive w. 16mb cache operating at 3Gb/s? Or even a 1.5Gb/s SATA I drive? Thanks.

    Hi-
Or am I trying to cram a V8 Hemi engine into my Mini Cooper, but just hooking it up to my 4-spark plug ignition system to run it on four cylinders?
Aw, you outa get at least 6 cylinders worth out of it...and it will be one mean Mini C!
The SATA won't run at it's potential, there is no doubt. But, you will see performance increases over the ATA drives, this is for sure..
In my Sawtooth, after I installed the SATA drives, the speed increase was palpable. The SATA drives have better performance characteristics than ATA, and even without full data transfer rates, the increase in bandwidth, the speed of the drives, and the increase in cache definitely help performance.
As for the question of SATA vs. SATA II, SATA II drives are all backward compatible to earlier SATA standard, so there is no reason to "limit" yourself to early SATA. Most all controllers are SATA II standard, and the SATA II drives are the latest in technology, and give the greatest benefit.
I would recommend the Firmtek Seritek line of controllers. Bootable, and reliable.

  • How can I take advantage of the SPDIF out..?

Hi all, as my subject says, can anyone recommend the best setup where i can take advantage of the spdif output in my imac?  I am setting up pro tools and/or logic 8 and want high fidelity sound i can with this great machine .
Links with info would be great, I basically want to send the digital signal into to Yamaha self powered studio speakers.
Is there a cable I can purchase by itself?
Thanks for any help in advance.

The cables can be found most anywhere.  For cables and adapters I always recommend searching www.monoprice.com first.  They have high quality cables for very good prices.  As an example search for TOSLINK at their site to find optical cables and related components.  It's where I got mine.

  • Can PS CS 6 take advantage of a high RAM system

Hi. I am thinking of investing in a workstation desktop built from oem components (since the components are quite cheap now). I have confgured a system on paper that has:
    Core i7.
    Dual NVIDIA video cards
    32 GB of DDR3
    Win 7 64 bit
There is a lot of discussion on some computer building forums as to whether programs like CS 6 can take advantage of such large amounts of RAM. I myself have 8 GB of RAM on a Mac and notice that the kinds of images that I open cause CS6 to max out on whatever RAM it can take up (causing it to use swap space), causing operations like nudge and healing to take some time. Can CS6 take advantage of such vast amounts of memory and also the dual NVIDIA cards with Open CL?

    >> and also the dual NVIDIA cards with Open CL?
2 cards, no, due to driver issues.
SLI/multicard connections - no, those are intended for gaming acceleration only.
A single card with multiple GPUs, yes.

  • TS4006 Can I take advantage of this feature if I ALREADY lost my Mac? I did not activate the setting ahead of time.... because I hadn't planned on losing it yet.

I recently lost my MacBookPro along with the rest of the contents of my backpack. Left it in the back of a taxi..... Thing is, I wasn't planning on doing that and so I hadn't activated the necessary setting on my computer to utilize FindMyMac.
Is there any way I can still take advantage of this feature and find it?!?! Please help.
    Thanks

You don't mention which feature.  I presume "Find My Mac".  No, those have to be set up before losing the hardware.  Contact the taxi company and the police.

  • How many cores can FCP take advantage of?

I'm currently on a Core 2 Duo processor and FCP seems to range in about the 150-170% (according to my activity monitor) when timeline rendering. Can it do more/go faster with a processor with more cores? Or, is there a limit to how many cores the software can actually use?
Same question for Compressor... which, I believe I've read somewhere, can take advantage of at least 8 cores.

Thanks, Red... I really appreciate your response.
yeah, I think I'm clear on core vs. processor (I have one processor with two cores). I'm using a cluster to rope both of my cores into maxing out for Compressor.
Both of my cores appear to be working during a FCP timeline render (going to about 150-175% combined). I guess my original question was, is that about as good as FCP gets, regardless of the amount of cores and/or processors? The thought that prompted me to ask this question is, if FCP is capable of utilizing more cores, why isn't it currently pegging at closer to 190%, like my 2-core cluster does when I'm using Compressor?
Since I'm hearing that FCP isn't mult-processor capable, if I had a quad core, single processor would my timeline renders be going faster? Or, again, is FCP maxing out its capabilities with just my two cores?
    Thanks all.
