can a time capsule be used as an external wireless hard drive?

You can do this, but file transfers / copies will be very slow over wireless.

  • Can time capsule be use simultaneously as a wireless hard drive and time machine backup?

Hello, I currently have a macbook pro retina and have about 600 gig of content. I am tired of hauling around an external hard drive with him to hold it all. I was thinking of getting a Time Capsule but wanted to know if it can serve as both an external hard drive for my content as well as the destination disk for a time machine back up. If not, can I attach an external hard drive to the time machine to use as the backup drive. Oh one more thing, will I only be able to see the content if I connect to the same home internet network or will I be able to access it with any internet connection regardless of where I am??

Who is him?? The MBPr.. interesting choice of pronoun if it is.
Do you really need 600GB of content.. ??
You can buy a 1TB 2.5" drive in a tiny holder now. In terms of the amount of lugging.. I doubt you will feel that much extra.

We do not recommend the TC as an external hard disk to store your files. It has no.. repeat NO ability to back itself up.. it is a sealed unit without spare parts available.. If it dies.. apple will replace not recover. Say goodbye to all your files.. and frankly that are not that reliable.
TM cannot backup a network drive.. and you cannot backup without using a 3rd party software and another USB disk or NAS.. so.. to cut the long story short.. buy the right box.. a NAS.. QNAP and Synology make real NAS, with fully integrated backup that can do TM backups.
If you do decide on the TC for your files.. you can access it locally no problems.
From WAN over the net using BTMM and iCloud.. remember every file movement is restricted to the slowest speed in the network.. usually your upload speed at each end.. try doing anything at 800kbps which is all most people get. If you have high speed fibre then great.
A real NAS will be accessed by SFTP directly using dynamic dns or static public IP .. even better.. but the same limitation applies.. speed of the convoy is the speed of the slowest ship.
A dropbox in the cloud is often a better way although accessing 600GB is still not easy.. and getting it up there.. harder still. But download speed is a lot better than upload.

Can the time capsule be used as an external hard drive

If you mean by usb to a computer no.. it is a network device only and has to be used via ethernet or wireless.
It can be used standalone,, ie not plugged into an existing network.. but there are some steps required to make it work if you want internet connection at the same time. It is generally much easier to have the TC bridged into the network.

  • Is it possible to use time capsule or airport extreme as a wireless hard drive for iphone?

Is it possible to use time capsule or airport extreme as a wireless hard drive for iphone.
I would like to strem movies from the hard drive to iphone.
I have already seen the Goflex Stellite, which works this way.
Is there any other device that could do this?

I did a typo. My current computer is a 2010 1/2 iMac.  The stand alone monitors are still out of my price range so I'm looking for other options. By buying an external hard drive and a broken iMac, I'm still ahead. Still, if I understand you right, the 27" 2010 and earlier iMacs  would be possiblities.
Are there adapters that would allow me to run a 2011 and newer iMac as an external monitor from my 2010 1/2. There are so many adapters out there these days.

  • Time Capsule for use as Backup? As hard drive? As paperweight?

    Hi all,
after the third failure of the TC, this time with an internal disk error, I decided to ask in this forum whether someone knew of a proper solution to the problem. Not finding one, I just had to erase my TC disk, and start everything from scratch. Now, I want to post this here so people know of the opinion of a -well, just another- very disappointed user of the TC.
If the TC is not reliable for backups (as shown by the three times in four months or so that I had to trash everything and start from scratch), what do I want it for?
Maybe to use it as a hard disk? To store your iPhoto library for instance (so different users can share the same iPhoto, as recommended by Apple themselves in view of the tough restrictions on permissions in Leopard)? Hah!! And then, what happens when the TC fails due to the backup and you can not see it as a normal disk at all? You lose ALL your pics that you had copied there, plus backed-up because a) your image disk with the copy can not be mounted and b) the TC backup failed and can not be restored?
So, if it is not useful for backup, nor as an external hard drive, what is it useful for? To use it as a paperweight, as someone was writing in his signature footing somewhere?
I am still an Apple believer. Hope I continue for long, but the ridiculously limited service they seem to be providing when users are having problem is making me start to have serious doubts.... despite the many discussions I have had with my brother in law (a hectic PC supporter)
    Cheers, (with loads of disappointment)
    P.

    TC use;
    I don't do TMachine.
I use the hard disk with the GO function of the Finder.
I don't use TC as a main backup drive.
I use it for file sharing between my network and outside of my network when I need files. Example, I live in Michigan but was visiting in Pennsylvania when I needed a .mv4 file(golf instruction I made two years ago). I used the afp function and connected to my TC and downloaded that file.
I have not used my flash drives for months because I use TC to transfer files between the Macs on my network.
I also use TC to point movies to my ATV and any other Mac on my network to stream those TC movies.
So there are many wonderful functions that TC can do for a person. Just pick the appropriate ones.

  • Can the Time Capsule be used just to back up on an existing wi-fi network?

Can the Time Capsule be used just to back up on an existing wi-fi network?    We just set-up a new Xfinity wireless modem which is supposed to be very fast, but Time Capsule set-up instructions indicate we need to use the Time capsule as the primary internet connection.   True?

My mistake. Meant to reply to snorris3. Text is repeated below:
Can I still use it as a back up device?   My new modem is also the router.
    Yes you can.
The best way (and really the only way) to set up the Time Capsule would be to connect an Ethernet cable from your modem/router to the Time Capsule.
The Time Capsule will produce a wireless network by default, but if you don't want to use that network, it is a simple matter to turn off the wireless on the Time Capsule and use it only as a  hard drive for backups.
I would be very surprised if the Xfinity modem/router would even come close to the wireless performance of the Time Capsule, but that may be another discussion.
If you elect not to use the wireless on the Time Capsule, then you will be backing up over the existing wireless network that you already have.
That would be a shame, since a third to half of the total cost of the Time Capsule is tied up in the wireless router portion of the Time Capsule. If you want to use the existing Xfinity wireless network, you could save yourself quite a bit of money by simply connecting a USB or Firewire hard drive to your Mac for backups. But, it's your call.

Yes, on XP, Vista and 7. Have not tried 8.
If so what software do I need to buy?
Genie Timeline Pro does a very nice job...and it is similar to Apple's Time Machine.  It's not cheap though.  Check with the Genie folks for more info and compatibility with Windows 8.

  • Can the time capsule be used as both a time machine backup and NAS storage

Can the time capsule be used as both a time machine backup and NAS storage?   I want to use the drive as external, wireless storage for all of my files so all my PCs, MACs and iOS devices can access the files.  Plus, I want to use the drive for backing up my iMac via time machine.  Can the time capsule device be used for both these purposes simultaneously?  If not, are the other suggestions on how I can do this?

Can the time capsule device be used for both these purposes simultaneously?
It can, but is really not recommended. Sooner or later there will be a fight for space on the drive between Time Machine and the other files.
If you have plenty of free space on the drive, you can do this......but.....have you thought about how you will back up the "other" files that are stored on the Time Capsule?

Can I use a non apple wireless hard drive with time Machine?

Some NAS (network storage) systems do claim to support Time Machine, with varying levels of success. For example, the Synology units have this feature. They're not officially supported by Apple, though.

new help with my mac air and airport extreme time capsule dont know how to save to time capsule and use as a external hd would like 2 store my home videos and pictures on the time machine (ONLY) as the MAC AIR has storage space limited space please help. THANK YOU.

See the info here about sharing or using the TC for data.
    Q3 http://pondini.org/TM/Time_Capsule.html
It is extremely important you realise.. the Time Capsule was never designed for this.
It is a backup target for Time Machine.. that is the software on the computer that does backups.. it has no direct connection to the Time Capsule.
It has no ability to back itself up.. unlike all other NAS in the market. It is therefore likely one day you will lose all your files unless you seriously work out how to backup.
The TC is slow to spin up the hard disk and fast to spin down. iTunes and iPhoto will continually lose connection to their respective libraries.
iPhoto in particular is easy to corrupt when you move photos over wireless into the library.. once corrupted all is corrupt. A single photo will ruin it all.. so backup is utterly essential.
Time Machine cannot do backups of network drives. ie the TC. You will need a different backup software like CCC. You will then need another target to backup to..

  • Use Time Capsule as a external wireless hard drive

i want to use TC as external hard drive but wireless and without extra router or internet i mean just plug it to the power and setup it on ios 5 wifi and thenuse it just like hot spot, i connect to the TC and use it as a external wireless hard drive, is it possible ?
    1. i dont have router
    2. i dont have internet
    3. i dont want to have router and internet

I too purchased TC today and it came out to be very easy to setup.
I am using windows pc so just downloaded Airport utility from following link:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1391
Once the installation is complete, it automatically detects TC and ask for password. That's it.
    Good luck!!

  • I HAD AN EXTERNAL WIRELESS HARD DRIVE, I NO LONGER USE IT, BUT MY IMAC AT START UP CONTINUES TO LOOK FOR IT. IS THERE ANY WAY TO DELETE IT ?

I HAD AN EXTERNAL WIRELESS HARD DRIVE, THAT I DO NOT USE ANY MORE, BUT MY IMAC KEEPS LOOKING FOR THE HARD DRIVE AT STARTUP. IS THEIR ANY WAY TO DELETE IT, SO IT WONT KEEP LOOKING FOR IT ?

    Boot in safe mode.
Log in and see whether you still have the problem. If you don't, it's caused by one of your login items or a system modification that loads at startup or login.
If the problem isn't resolved that way, other possible causes are references in the iPhoto, iTunes, or iMovie library pointing to the server, and bookmarks in the Preview application

  • Can I mount external hard drive to Time Capsule and use it as external storage?

I have a 500GB external hard drive that I'd like to use on the Time Capsule as a hard drive to store mp3 and mp4 files.  Can I attach it to the Time Capsule and use it like this?  Or does it just give an additional 500GB worth of back ups from my iMac?

Can I attach it to the Time Capsule and use it like this?
Yes, if the drive has been formatted in Mac OS Extended (Journaled)...preferable....or FAT32. Access to the files will somewhat slower than if you had the drive attached directly to your computer.
Have you given some thought as to how you will keep this drive backed up?
Time Machine will not be able to back up the drive that is attached to the Time Capsule's USB port.
But, it would be able to back up the drive if you connected it directly to your Mac and the drive was formatted in Mac OS Extended (Journaled).

  • Can Time Capsule be used as an external drive but not a router

Greetings,  I have a spare 1TB older Time Capsule that I would like to give to a friend who would like to use it as an external hard drive w/time machine.  They currently have a current iMac with Comcast internet and router which they would prefer to continue using for internet access.  My question is: can a time capsule be set up to be used as an external backup drive without using the router capability. Thanks for any advise.

My question is: can a time capsule be set up to be used as an external backup drive without using the router capability
    Yes
Connect the Time Capsule to the Comcast router using a wired Ethernet connection from a LAN port on the Comcast router to the WAN port on the Time Capsule and set it up to create a network.
Then, go back in using AirPort Utility and turn off the wireless function on the Time Capsule. The Time Capsule will operate as  "bridge" in this type of setup, so it will not perform as a router.
