Can a time machine usb drive backup the data from an external usb drive connected to and airport extreme*
can a time machine usb drive conected to my mac book backup the data from an external usb drive connected to and airport extreme ?
Hi Adam, if you think yoiur HD may be failing you could do a TM restore onto the new disk. I would rather see you do a clone either SuperDuper or CarbonCopy Cloner.Of your internal drive. That way you have a bootable backup in case it does fail.
btw - what are the symptoms of your failing drive?

If time machine puts all of my photos onto my external hard drive using time machine, can I then delete the photos from my computer but view them again from the external hard drive? Basically, can I free up space on my mac but not lose years of photos?
To add to Niel's comment bear in mind that if you have a backup copy on an external HD and later delete the orignals on your Mac HD you will then only have one copy - so no backup.
If the pictures are precious you should have at least two copies, and ideally another copy kept off site, -
I had to change my Hard Drive, now I want to work on files in iWeb, but can't access Time Machine before yesterday. The dates are there on the right hand side but are greyed out before yesterday when I changed my HD. How do I access anything from before?

I would like to restore files from a time machine back-up of my iMac to an EXTERNAL hard drive connected to MacBook Pro. When I tried using Migration Assistant it only gives me my internal hard drive as an option to restore to. The internal hard drive on my macbook isnt large enough to store the files.
Welcome to Apple Support Communities
OS X can only restore data to the drive where Time Machine backed up files from.
If you want to restore files from the Time Machine backup onto an external drive, your only option is to access to the Time Machine drive manually (open a Finder window and choose your Time Machine drive in the Finder sidebar), navigate through its folders and copy the files you want to the external drive -

can i backup the data from a broken iphone to my new iphone?
Just back the phone up to icloud and restore iPhone from backup on the new phone. When you are going through the set up process it ask you if you want to set the phone up as new or restore from a backup. You do not nee itunes at all or anything hooked up.

I used Migration Assistant to transfer my data from my external hard drive via Time Capsule to my restored Mac Book Pro. When I now go into Time Capsule I there are red minus signs in the corner of all the folders that are contained in my back up. How do I get rid of this and access my previous back-ups?
Select the drive and Finder > Get info and at the bottom "ignore permissions on this volume"
You can copy the files, but the ownership on the files still belongs to the other user account, once your done copying, then perform a #6 Reset Users Permissions and that will set all the ownership to that account.
..Step by Step to fix your Mac
Another method is to copy the entire folder, then change it's permissions. -
How do i recover data from an external hard drive that was accidentally deleted? After I verified the drive, a message appeared that said my drive needed to be repaired. When I tried to access the drive again, the 700 Gigs of music is gone!
Stop using the drive immediately, un plug it.
Buy a copy of ProSoft DataRescue 4 and use it to search for deleted files. -

Hello, Esmin77.
Thank you for visiting Apple Support Communities.
I see you want to restore your MacBook Pro from an external drive. Here is an article that may help you with this process if you used Time Machine to backup these files.
OS X Yosemite: Recover your entire system

How do i retrieve data from my external hard drive?
how do i retrieve data from my external hard drive?
If your hard drive can be detected and shows up as a drive letter in my computer but you can't access your files, then you can recover your data off it with data recovery software easily. This way is the easiest and the most inexpensive way to recover your data.If you bring it to a computer repair shop that is available for data recovery servise, they will cost you $500-1000 or more.Hmm, a lot of money.
I managed to recover data from crashed hard drive with Tenorshare Data Recovery. If needed, you can download it and scan your hard drive for free to preview whether your data can be recovered. It will show you thumbnails for recoverable pictures. -
i am doing one Labview project. so my project is about design a interface in labview which one collect the data from keithley 2400 via GPIB connection. any suggestion please
Your first task should be to just be able to send commands to the instrument. Do as Dennis suggested and download the drivers for the instrument and get familiar with them. Build up small VIs that do little tasks with those drivers so you can get used to them. Then worry about your main interface.

I moved some time machine backup files from an external USB hard drive to the trash. Tried secure empty trash. It counts 74,003 items, then just sits there. The external hard drive window shows it's empty, but the info pane says it only has 50G of memory left. I left the secure empty trash on over night. It did nothing. Ideas?
Thanks,
RonRelaunch the Finder, then from the Finder menu bar, select
Finder ▹ Preferences ▹ Advanced
and uncheck the box marked Empty Trash securely. Try again to empty the Trash. -
Time Machine does not backup the HD, but an old version on itself!
I had to find a file in a Time Machine backup of my Macbook Air running Lion, to transfer it to my desktop computer.
To my horror, the entire TM backup was NOT of my Air as it was when I did the backup yesterday, but of 5 months earlier! So I checked a whole string of TM backups over the last couple of months and they were all the same! Even though 100's of files have been added, deleted and edited since then. TM seems to be copying old backups from its own folder on the backup drive! I've had to manually copy my Air onto a new folder in the backup drive, to be safe.
I cannot find anything about this problem in the forums or on http://pondini.org/TM/Troubleshooting.html
Can anyone help please?Time Machine will only back up HFS+ (Mac OS Extended) formatted drives. Reformatting will erase the drive so make sure everything on it is safely copied elsewhere and verify a few test files before erasing the drive. Getting rid of the FAT32 formatting has been problematic for quite a few people. The directions in this article are for good for getting rid of the FAT32 formatting. They are for formatting a Time Machine disk but the directions will work just as well for your purposes.

How do I use time machine to make a back up of my external hard drive
I'd like to use my AirPort Time Machine to backup from an external hard drive. How do I do that?
1) When I connect my LaCie 500 GB EHD direct via USB I don't see where I can acces it to transfer the files
2) When I connect my LaCie 500 GB EHB to my new MacBook Pro, it cannot get it removed from the 'ignore' list in the Time Capsule
Looking forward to any suggestions and I researched other questions but unfortunately unsuccessful until now.
MichielThe drive needs to be formatted as Mac OS Extended (Journaled) and connected to the computer for Time Machine to be able to back it up.

Will my files i saved using time machine still exist if i delete from my computers hard drive?
I recently had a problem with my computer. I bought an external hard drive and used time machine to back up my 15in mac book pro before sending in for repair.
I have gotten my computer back and needed to delete files from the hard drive on the computer ( close to capacity). Was I safe to do so knowing that everything is saved on my external?
My concern is that if I plug in the external hard drive it will now see those files have been deleted from my computer and delete from the external as well.
-DavidJust wanted to add to this conversation - Time Machine will keep copies of your files for some time. It is a backup system, after all. Deleting the files from your main hard drive will not cause Time Machine to go and delete them from your backups.
However, eventually, Time Machine is likely to run out of space on your hard drive, and it then does some cleaning up so it can continue working. A file that is not on your hard drive will not exist on your Time Machine backup forever. Eventually it will be deleted to make room for more recent backups. I can't predict how long this will take, but if you have bought a 1TB or so drive for your Time Machine backups, I would suggest that you might be able to keep some months of backups online - after that, old files that you no longer have on your Macbook Pro will be cleaned away.
So Glenn is spot on - if you want an archive copy of those files, you should make a separate backup - Time Machine does not keep your files forever!
Hope that helps.

Booting the Mac from an external USB drive
I was under the impression that you could only boot a Mac from an external firewire drive. However, I have just successfully booted my new MacBook from an external SuperDuper backup connected via USB.
I was under the impression that you could only boot a Mac from an external firewire drive.
That basically only applies to Mac OS X on PowerPC Macs, not on an Intel Mac such as a MacBook.
