Can a time switch damage time capsule

Hi,
during the night I don't use my time capsule and want to switch it off completely (safety and energy saving reasons).
Does the sudden power loss of a time switch once a day pose a threat to time capsule?
What's the worse that can happen?
Has anyone tried this yet?
Thanks in advance for any advice!
Martin

Should be fine.. although the power saving is not huge.. they do not draw that much current when the disk is not working and spun down... I put the energy meter on it.. and forget the value now.. maybe 10-12W.

Power loss is no biggie.. in and of itself.
Power loss during the middle of a backup.. really bad. Let me pose the issue that happens every now and then.. you are in the middle of a big work/study assignment.. burning the midnight oil.. and 3am oil.. !!
You forget to turn off the time switch, and promptly at midnight.. the TC shuts off,, but it was just when the Mac was doing TM backup. End result could be minor corruption.. or could be major corruption.. If you want to do this my advise is to use a power board that will detect shut down of the control device and shut down other devices.. these are cheap and work reasonably well. So the shut down of the Mac will cause the TC to turn off. It would have to be a desktop Mac to work.
The worst.. this is a debate that will never end.. is shutting down electronics to save power going to make a device last longer.. we don't know.. sometimes yes. sometimes no.. the constant heating and cooling of the board causes components to expand and contract.. and modern lead free solder is nasty stuff.
You may introduce faults .. cracks in solder in particular.
There is no added safety in shutting it off.. they do not cause fires.. or damage.. the worst that will happen is the internal fuse will blow. The power you save is not huge.. but yes, it adds up.
What is the right or wrong practice... ?? No suitable tests exist.. but I personally would never shut it off unless my power costs triple.. even then I would be pretty slack about it.
Any other opinion is equally valid.

Yes, on XP, Vista and 7. Have not tried 8.
If so what software do I need to buy?
Genie Timeline Pro does a very nice job...and it is similar to Apple's Time Machine.  It's not cheap though.  Check with the Genie folks for more info and compatibility with Windows 8.

You can backup different Macs with it. Just set up the two computers to backup in it

  • Can my time capsule 802.11n (4th gen) affect performance?

for several months i have been having trouble with what i think is excessive read/writing and a slowdown creating the dreaded beachballs.  i especially have trouble when safari is open.
can my time capsule cause these symptoms?  about a week ago i got a message that i was not connected to the internet even though i had just been using it.  i called my isp (wow) thinking they were down.  the rep said that they weren't having trouble, but he was getting a week signal from my router (time capsule).
in the last few days i have been experiencing beachball delays on my laptop, which uses my home wifi.  i have not had trouble with my laptop before, only my intel imac.
when i run the airport utility, it tells me that my time capsule is ok.
is it possible that a failing time capsule is causing my problems?  i bought the time capsule in early 2012.
here is my etrecheck report, if this helps.

    thank you for your help.

i'm writing to report.  i downloaded the java update that a brody suggested.  i ran fix disk permissions and then tried the internet.  i started out using firefox and then chrome.  they were nimble and responsive (sounds like a car review).  then i tried safari.  it was slowwwwwwwwwwww.  no beachballs, now gray revolving circles.  safari  is /was so slow it often takes a while for a character i have typed to show up on the screen.
i have rerun etrecheck and the outdated javaapplet plugin message is still there as though i have not updated my imac.
i am going to remove some of the 3rd party software, but i'd like to be sure that i have accomplished what i needed to do re java.
does anyone have any other ideas about safari besides using another browser?
    thank you.

  • Can the time capsule be used as both a time machine backup and NAS storage

Can the time capsule be used as both a time machine backup and NAS storage?   I want to use the drive as external, wireless storage for all of my files so all my PCs, MACs and iOS devices can access the files.  Plus, I want to use the drive for backing up my iMac via time machine.  Can the time capsule device be used for both these purposes simultaneously?  If not, are the other suggestions on how I can do this?

Can the time capsule device be used for both these purposes simultaneously?
It can, but is really not recommended. Sooner or later there will be a fight for space on the drive between Time Machine and the other files.
If you have plenty of free space on the drive, you can do this......but.....have you thought about how you will back up the "other" files that are stored on the Time Capsule?

  • Can the Time Capsule be used just to back up on an existing wi-fi network?

Can the Time Capsule be used just to back up on an existing wi-fi network?    We just set-up a new Xfinity wireless modem which is supposed to be very fast, but Time Capsule set-up instructions indicate we need to use the Time capsule as the primary internet connection.   True?

My mistake. Meant to reply to snorris3. Text is repeated below:
Can I still use it as a back up device?   My new modem is also the router.
    Yes you can.
The best way (and really the only way) to set up the Time Capsule would be to connect an Ethernet cable from your modem/router to the Time Capsule.
The Time Capsule will produce a wireless network by default, but if you don't want to use that network, it is a simple matter to turn off the wireless on the Time Capsule and use it only as a  hard drive for backups.
I would be very surprised if the Xfinity modem/router would even come close to the wireless performance of the Time Capsule, but that may be another discussion.
If you elect not to use the wireless on the Time Capsule, then you will be backing up over the existing wireless network that you already have.
That would be a shame, since a third to half of the total cost of the Time Capsule is tied up in the wireless router portion of the Time Capsule. If you want to use the existing Xfinity wireless network, you could save yourself quite a bit of money by simply connecting a USB or Firewire hard drive to your Mac for backups. But, it's your call.

  • Can the time capsule be used as an external hard drive

Can the time capsule be used as an external hard drive

If you mean by usb to a computer no.. it is a network device only and has to be used via ethernet or wireless.
It can be used standalone,, ie not plugged into an existing network.. but there are some steps required to make it work if you want internet connection at the same time. It is generally much easier to have the TC bridged into the network.

You can do this, but file transfers / copies will be very slow over wireless.

  • Can the time capsule 2TB be used as more memory

Can the time capsule 2TB be used as more memory or is it just for backing suff up?
Can you wirelss transfer video and music to your iPhone or iPad without using the computer?

You can use Time Capsule as a 'simple' external harddisk, but keep in mind that the fastest connection with the TC is Ethernet which is slower than FireWire800 for example.
Currently iTunes and a USB-connection is needed for syncing an iPad or iPhone.
With the "PC Free" feature of the yet to be released iOS 5 (this fall...) this might not be needed anymore.

  • Can a time capsule store a movie from an external hard drive then allow that movie to be played on an iPad on the network?

Can a time capsule store a movie from an external hard drive then allow that movie to be played on an iPad on the network?

I don't use ipad for this so i am just googling.
    https://itunes.apple.com/au/app/media-player-playerxtreme/id456584471?mt=8
    https://itunes.apple.com/au/app/oplayerhd-lite-best-free-video/id385896088?mt=8

Anything that will play from Samba network file store..
You will probably also need filebrowser loaded on the ipad to find the files.
Is the ipad necessary btw.. ?? If you only want to play the file to your TV you can buy a WD Live TV.. unlike the Apple TV it is a media player.. and can play files of almost any format direct from the TC.

  • Can two Times Capsules work as Raid1?

Can two Time Capsules work as Raid 1 (copy the same content to each Time Capsule) so that if one TC fails the other works.

    Bob,
Thank you very much for the information.
My plan is to buy two TCs and install iTunes on them to save space on my laptop's SSD.
As I read Isaw that putting photos on TC is not reccomended due to the possibility of the failure of the HD.
I think two TCs will help on that.
I hope Apple will make a more secure TC (with two HDs in raid 1 mode).

  • I was just wondering if I can use time capsule with my iphone for both back up and to access the hard drive on the capsule?

I was just wondering if I can use time capsule with my iphone for both back up and to access the hard drive on the capsule?

I don't think backup is supported but you may be able to access the TC's internal drive, from the iPhone, with an application like: NetPortal
Note: I haven't actually tried this app, so if someone else has and was successful in accessing the TC's drive they can certainly chime in.
Follow-up. Just downloaded and installed this app ... and I can now verify that it, indeed, can access both my TC's internal and externally attached USB HDD.

  • Can a Time capsule run a VPN service??

Can a Time capsule run a VPN service??

There is no inbuilt vpn in the TC, but it should support vpn passthrough from a router or client computer running vpn software. It is important that the TC should have the public IP address on its wan or be used in bridge to another router, otherwise you will find with double NAT it almost impossible to get vpn working.

  • Can a time capsule work wireless

Can a time capsule work wireless

iOS devices like the iPad and iPhone back up to iTunes on your computer.....or.....to iCloud.
They do not and cannot back up directly to the Time Capsule.
If you then back up your computer to the Time Capsule, all the backups in iTunes are backed up on the Time Capsule....in case your computer hard drive fails, is stolen, etc.
Your computer can back up to the Time Capsule using wireless or via an Ethernet connection.
See this Apple support document for all the information on how iOS devices back up.

  • Can the time capsule work as a extra drive

Can the time capsule work as a extra drive

It is an extra drive that is being used for backup. That's what it's intended for. It's not really intended to be used as a storage drive, but you can use it in that fashion. However, backup and storage should be kept separate. If you need extra storage then buy another external drive but one the connects directly to your computer. Use the Time Capsule with Time Machine as your backup solution.
