Can a website steal your email address when surfing on a mac

Can a website steal your email address just by visiting it on a Mac using Safari? (and without specifically entering the address on any newsletter sign ups or anything)

Mulder - thanks, this is helpful & I hope you are right, I want to check that I'm not just giving my address away!
Thing is I tested connecting to an anonymous ftp site using safari after your post. Safari hands off the request to finder as suggested but I understand that anonymous ftp sites usually require your email instead of a password and that by default some browser's (or maybe in this case finder?) give your email address (or a dummy one) over automatically. As I didn't get prompted for an email address I'm assuming that my computer (safari, finder or some other program) is maybe giving something over behind the scenes and I don't know what.
I did a search on the internet about this and quite a few articles mention the following ways sites can get your email address for spam. This is why I wanted to check it out / whether it affects macs?
This is what I read:
"Some sites use various tricks to extract a surfer's email address from the web browser, sometimes without the surfer noticing it. Those techniques include:
1) Making the browser fetch one of the page's images through an anonymous FTP connection to the site. Some browsers would give the email address the user has configured into the browser as the password for the anonymous FTP account. A surfer not aware of this technique will not notice that the email address has leaked.
2) Using JavaScript to make the browser send an email to a chosen email address with the email address configured into the browser. Some browsers would allow email to be sent when the mouse passes over some part of a page. Unless the browser is properly configured, no warning will be issued
3) Via an Ident daemon. Many unix computers run a daemon (a program which runs in the background, initiated by the system administrator), intended to allow other computers to identify people who connect to them. When a person surfs from such a computer connects to a web site or news server, the site or server can connect the person's computer back and ask that daemon's for the person's email address
4) From finger daemons. Some finger daemons are set to be very friendly - a finger query asking for john@host will produce list info including login names for all people named John on that host. A query for @host will produce a list of all currently logged-on users. Spammers use this information to get extensive users list from hosts, and of active accounts - ones which are 'live' and will read their mail soon enough to be really attractive spam targets"
5) Using the HTTP_FROM header that browsers send to the server. Some browsers pass a header with your email address to every web server you visit.
I know that 5 definitely isn't happening but the other ones are difficult for me to check.
Thanks again

  • Keep your email address when moving house

We can help when you move house by switching your Telstra home phone, broadband and entertainment services to your new address.
Just make sure that we know that you want to keep the same email address.
    You can either:
start now by filling out our online form for moving home, or
call us on 1800 670 017 (particularly if you’re moving within the next 5 business days).

Re: Keep your email address when moving house
I was told I could keep my bigpond email account after I moved home to go to the UK. I just needed it whilst I receved bills / and other correspondence for a few weeks.
My BigPond account has been blocked already - and this is very inconvenient - particularly as I won't be able to receive my final Telstra bill.
Can you please unblock [email protected] -
If you need to call me I am currently in Switzerland and can be reached on +41219210812.
I understand I cannot send emails from this account but I was expecting to still be able to receive correspondence.
    Thank you

  • Can't copy or move email addresses when composing an email??!?!?!?!

If I am composing an email and the email address is already encased in the "blue bubble" is there any way to copy / cut / paste the text string of the email address contained within the blue bubble?
I can highlight the blue bubble email address by tapping it.... I can unhighlight it by tapping it again. Or I can backspace and delete the email address bubble. Aside from that I've tried everything and can't figure out how to copy that email address in the bubble.
    Why this would be useful:
I want to easily copy/paste/move particular email recipients from the "to:" field to the "CC:" field
Or, I want to copy the email address encased in that blue bubble, and paste into my Contacts, or into a SMS text message.
    Seems like a major oversight.
    Help Thanks

    help please

If the old ID ("email address") is your ID, and if your new ID was created by editing the details of this old ID (rather than being an entirely new ID), go to https://appleid.apple.com, click Manage my Apple ID and sign in with your current iCloud ID.  Click edit next to the primary email account, change it back to your old email address and save the change.  Then edit the name of the account to change it back to your old email address.  You can now use your current password to turn off Find My iDevice, even though it prompts you for the password for your old account ID. Then save any photo stream photos that you wish to keep to your camera roll.  When finished go to Settings>iCloud, tap Delete Account and choose Delete from My iDevice when prompted (your iCloud data will still be in iCloud).  Next, go back to https://appleid.apple.com and change your primary email address and iCloud ID name back to the way it was.  Now you can go to Settings>iCloud and sign in with your current iCloud ID and password.

  • Can You set a Default Email Address when sending Emails

I have multiple email accounts set up. When I compose a new message, it always uses the send address of the message that is selected in the open window. Is there anyway to set a particular address as default or better yet don't pick an address and force me to select one from the pull down list?
    Doug Eaton

    Hello Doug.
Copied from Setting the account your email is sent from.
If you have set up multiple accounts in Mail, when you create a new message, the account the message is sent from is the one associated with the currently selected mailbox. If the current mailbox is listed in the On My Mac section of the mailbox list and is not associated with any particular account, then your message is sent from the first account listed in the Accounts pane of Mail Preferences.
You can select a different account to use to send the mail.
To send a message from a different account, choose the account from the Account pop-up menu when you're composing the message.
To change the order in which accounts are listed in the mailbox list, drag the account names into the order you want. You can also rearrange the account order in the Accounts pane of Mail Preferences.
Tiger Mail includes a default email account selection when selecting New to compose a new message regardless which mailbox is currently selected.

I have 2 accounts in my Mail Preferences, hotmail and gmail.  I have tried to set it so when I send a message to a new recipient  it is my gmail one that is used as default.  However,  it is thehotmail account that is always ticked first.
I would like to set my mail preferences so the gmail is my default first choice in sending new messages and is ticked as my default email address.

  • Why can't I cut and paste email addresses when sending documents?

Why can't I cut and paste email addresses when sending files? I have to type them in each time...And it doesn't remember them for the future, as SendNow did.
Also, it seems that the message I type in is not kept, as it was with SendNow?
    Thanks!

    Hi drlaura,
You're correct on both counts--these features work differently Adobe Send than they do in Adobe SendNow.
If you're sending files from Adobe Reader, you can access your local Address Book, which should make entering email addresses easier. Please see: I’m trying to send a file from Adobe Reader, but I can’t access my computer’s address book to find my contacts. Why not?
Please let us know how it goes.
    Best,
    Sara

  • Why does my phone come up with my old email address when I am trying to update my apps. I can log into my itunes with my new email

My phone shows my old email address when i am trying to update my apps how do i get it to use my new one. I can log in to my apple account and itunes ect with new one

All iPhone apps are digitally signed using the Apple ID they were purchased with.  You CANNOT change this.  You either enter the password for the original Apple ID, or you delete the App and download a new copy using the new Apple ID.  Free apps that do not have lots of in-app content (like your Solitare High Score) are not a problem.  Paid apps and free apps with lots of built-up/earned content can be very annoying as you have to re-pay for the app and/or build-up/earn that content again.

    Hello.
Do you have any important/needed bookmarks, passwords, or history that you would like to keep? If not, then the easiest way would be to go to android's settings--apps-- and then tap on firefox--and then press "clear data". WARNING: This will reset Firefox to it's default settings, like when it was just installed. This should clear up everything and you should start over from scratch.
If you need to keep your Firefox profile (a.k.a. bookmarks, history, passwords, etc.) Then please let us know.

You can have a different receiving email in the Messages app on each device : Settings > Messages > Receive At . I'm not sure that there is a different way to have the message only go to one device.

  • Error when starting Firefox 3.6. "Javascript Application error. Invalid username/password combination. If you continue to get this error, try entering your email address as your username." Any suggestions on what to look for to resolve this?

When starting Mozilla Firefox 3.6, I get an error window which opens up additionally overtop my browser windows stating:
    "Javascript Application"
    followed with :
"Invalid username/password combination. If you continue to get this error, try entering your email address as your username."
Obviously it is happening with one of my email addresses/usernames & password combinations of which I know the username for (which I choose not to post here) and I'm not sure where to begin looking for a resolution to this problem.

I was able to resolve this by disabling (under Tools - Add-ons) Yahoo! Mail Notifier
Hope this helps some of you also!

Also doesn't help because my phone and laptop are set up on the old one. Thanks for the help.
