Can access internet when connected w/ethernet cables in router, but WRT54G says it can't connect

I have my router, modem, and computer all set up correctly. I can access the internet in this setup but with only the computer that is connected with the ethernet cord to the router. Yet, my WRT54G router can't connect to the internet in the Linksys easy setup nor through the http:192.168.1.1 method.
When I changed the internet connection type to PPPoE, my modem was unable to access the internet. I also changed the IP to 192.168.2.1 but that didn't help. I have performed several power cycles. I have upgraded the firmware.
I changed the internet connection type back to DHCP, so I am able to come on this website, but I can't set up the wireless since the router says it can't connect to the internet. Please help!

Start it from scratch...Reset your router and re-configure it...
Press and hold the reset button for 30 seconds...Release the reset button...Unplug the power cable from your router, wait for 30 seconds and re-connect the power cable...Now re-configure your router...
Also make sure that your computer is set to obtain IP automatically, disable any firewalls, security softwares on the computer before trying to access the setup page.

  • My macbook can't connect wirelessly but connects via ethernet cable

I've been going through the discussions in this forum and other info I could find online but I can't seem to fix it. I've only been using this old macbook provided by my employer for a couple of months and I've been having intermittent wireless connectivity issues.
    Things to consider:
My network settings show I'm connected to the web but when I load a webpage it says web page not available.
I can connect fine when I plug it to the router via an ethernet cable.
There are other laptops running Windows  which use the same connection and they have no problems connecting at all.
I've used diagnostics and restarted the router but  its says it can't fix the problem.
I tried one fix before which worked by performing these steps:went to Open network preferences->selected the network name and clicked advanced. I added the network's IP address under DNS.
    Details:
    Macbook 2,1 model
    Mac OS X version 10.6
    using Aztech DSL605EW router
I'm not that well versed with the techinical jargon that usually comes with discussions so please excuse me if I will sound like I don't know what I'm talking about. Please feel free to ask for more details which I may have missed.
Appreciate any help that comes my way.

It's important to remember that even for the same location, the settings for cable and airport are quite separate. This means that the settings that work for cable aren't automatically copied across to the airport settings.
Since it works for cable, I suggest you go to Network Settings, select the ethernet cable connection, then location then Advanced. Now note all the settings for all the tabs. Play particular attention to the Proxies.  Now come out of advanced, select the airport, go back into Advanced and copy all the settings across so they match up.
    Good luck

Try the following to rule out a software problem:
    - Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost
Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Power off and then back on your router
.- Reset network settings: Settings>General>Reset>Reset Network Settings

    - Wi-Fi: Unable to connect to an 802.11n Wi-Fi network
I suspect a problem with your router. Try changing the security. First use no security as a test.

    - Restore from backup. See:

If still problem and it does not connect to any networks make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store since it appears you have a hardware problem.

  • In my small office ethernet network all of a sudden one of my imacs cannot be connected to. It can connect to all other computers and can access internet, but as soon as someone tries to connect to that mac, it disconnects from the network. Any ideas

I have a network of 9 macs that connect via ethernet and a router. All of a sudden one of the macs cannot be connected to. It can connect to all others and the internet, but no one can connect to that one. I have appletalk active and file sharing on, but everytime someone tries to connect to it, it is not on the network. Additionally, the personal file sharing keeps turning off even though I have it locked. Any ideas?

    Hi orangekay
not sure where you got the idea that I have
bizarre encrypted filesystem plugins and scripts you have manipulating them all the time
because I do not have any such running, just normal Applescripts that do tasks that could be done by hand.

  • Can you connect an ethernet cable to an Airport Express Extension?

I have an Airport Express that I am using as an extension to my current home wireless network.
That is successful and I have a green light. I am trying to plug in an ethernet cable to allow an older mac without an airport card to connect to that Airport Express Extension. When I turn off the airport and select Ethernet Cable, I am told that the cable is not connected to the internet. The wireless works fine and I can get full bars in the far part of my house - but I do not get internet when connecting an Ethernet cable.
    Help!
    Thanks in advance

  • HP LaserJet P1505n, connected by Ethernet cable, does not get IP address so I can't get to web admin

    Hello and thanks in advance,
I've read as many threads as possible and done everything I could to get my HP P1505n working again but can't and need some new advice.
I've had this printer for a couple of years and it worked well and always connected. I had it plugged into a router (at one point linksys, then a dlink) and had given it a static ip address that it always printed to.
Recently, I got a Cisco modem/router from my internet service provider, I plugged in the printer's ethernet cable to it, and suddenly I couldn't print to it anymore. I couldn't access it's webadmin console and couldn't change any settings. I went through various troubleshooting steps and ultimately did a hard reset.
I left it alone for a week (thankfully I have another printer) but am trying again to get it up and running. Right now it has switched to AutoIP but it doesn't get in IP address. It only shows 169.254.241.24. I even tried to connect directly to it via ethernet and change my computer's ip to 169.254.241.23 with the same subnet mask and it won't connect to it - I can't get to the webadmin to manually assign it an IP like 192.168.0.111
Right at this moment actually I cannot even get a configuration page to print and the amber light above the green ethernet light flashes on for a second or two and then off for a few seconds and that cycle continues.
What can I do to get this working again aside from plugging in a usb cable and forgetting about network printing (the reason I bought it in the first place)?
    Thanks in advance

    Hi gr---8 ,
Sorry to hear you are still having issues setting up the printer on the wired network.
We will need to find out if it is the Ethernet port on the printer, or the network causing this issue.
Do you have Mac filtering on the router?
Disconnect the Ethernet cable from the printer.
Restore the printer back to factory settings.
Print a hardware test page to test the printer's hardware. Make sure the SSID and IP address is cleared from your router's setttings. Printing a Configuration Page in Windows.
Connect the Ethernet cable directly to the computer.
Print the configuration page again to see if you get a IP address to test the Ethernet port on the printer.
    What is the IP address?
Run the add printer wizard to install the printer.
    Test the printer.
Were you able to see the printer, add the printer and print?

  • Internet not working - wifi connected but internet and server fail, ethernet cable doesn't work either

All of a sudden the internet on our Macbook Pro does not work.  We connect through an Airport Extreme and other mac works fine.  It shows that wifi is fully connected but when i go to diagnostics, i see the internet and server are failing.  I tried connecting an ethernet cable and it doesn't work that way either.  Have restarted and reset modem and router, nothing is working… help!

    Hi ehamzic1,
Welcome to the Apple Support Communities!
I understand how frustrating it can be when your computer cannot connect to the internet. In your situation, you will need to isolate to find what is causing the issues connecting. I would recommend reading over and working through the attached article. The article should help you troubleshoot and resolve this situation.

  • I am unable to set up my new Time Capsule with my BT Home Hub - every time i connect the ethernet cable from Wan port to Home Hub, the internet signal drops

    Hi there -
I've just purchased a new Time Capsule, and would like to set up a small home network with my Laptop, iMac and wireless printer. I'm following the first steps, but as soon as I connect an ethernet cable between the WAN port of the TC and the ethernet port of the HH, my BT internet connection drops out and I have to restart the HH. Upon which point it drops out again. The airport utility can see my TC, and gets as far as me typing in the new network name and setting up a password, but then it can't quite get through to the next stage. All the time it's just flashing amber.
    Please help!

Setup the TC in bridge mode before you cannot it to the HH.
Simply do the setup fully in isolation. And do it by ethernet.
Setup wireless to create a wireless network.
You can use either same SSID =Wireless name as the HH .. same security same password.
Or use a different name and setup.. totally up to you.
Update the TC and then plug it into the HH by ethernet.

  • My time capsule seemed to have given up so I have just got a net gear router, I have no problem connecting  wirelessly but when I connect an Ethernet cable it says it's connected but pages will not load

My time capsule seemed to have given up so I have just got a net gear router, I have no problem connecting  wirelessly but when I connect an Ethernet cable it says it's connected but pages will not load

Do a factory reset .. nothing will be deleted from your backups and you will be able to get access to them again.
    The Factory Reset Gen1-4.
Unplug your TC. Hold in reset. and power the TC back on.. without releasing reset for about 10sec. When the status light flashes rapidly; release it.
Be Gentle! Feel the switch click on. It has a positive feel..  add no more pressure after that.
TC will reboot after a couple of minutes with default factory settings and will wipe out previous configurations.
No files are deleted on the hard disk.. No reset of the TC deletes files.. to do that you use erase from the airport utility.

  • TS1550 What about when using the "Time Capsule" HD as the external disk, especially when it is connected by ethernet cable? I'm having trouble getting it to work at all. Don't need it to work as anything else, other than a ethernet connected Time Machine

What about when using the "Time Capsule" HD as the external disk, especially when it is connected by ethernet cable? I'm having trouble getting it to work at all. Don't need it to work as anything else, other than a ethernet connected Time Machine backup. Already have a wireless network that works fine so no need to mess with it. We get the internet via cable company and their modem is upstairs and the Time Capsule is downstairs in the basement. The latest error message was about it could not backup as it was already in use (should have written it down before clicking OK and moving on.

    See if this helps...

  • Why does my airport utility always ask me to connect an ethernet cable when I would like to use the extended network option?

Why does my airport utility always ask me to connect an ethernet cable when I would like to use the extended network option?

Please locate the model number on the side of the AirPort Express. Hard to see.....gray lettering on a white background....so you may likely need a magnifying glass and good lighting to see it.
The model number starts with a "A" followed by four numbers. If you see A1084 or A1088, unfortunately AirPort Utility 6.x in Mavericks OS X (10.9.4) does not support these older models. However, you can still administer these models if you have a Mac.....or can borrow one for a few minutes....using Leopard (10.5.x) or Snow Leopard (10.6.x), or a PC with AirPort Utility installed on the device.

I cannot access my Apple TV in WiFi mode. I have used it previously, but it keeps saying it is not connected to the network. My broadband is running. I was able to access Apple TV using an Ethernet cable. I have entered the wireless password as confirmed by my ISP without any success.

    Hi,
Thanks for trying to solve my problem. It appears that the password I was inserting was incorrect. I now have access.
    Thanks again.

  • Can Time Capsule connect without Ethernet Cable?

I currently have RoadRunner service to get Internet with my Mac, connecting my Ethernet cable to my Time Capsule. I want to replace RR with a Clear Network mobile hotspot. Is it possible? Both it and the TC are WiFi devices.

  • Why won't my old iMac G4 recognize my Airport Express when connected with ethernet cable?

After I installed an Airport Extreme as a base station for my network, the G4 couldn't recognize either the Airport Express or the Airport Extreme unless it was connected by ethernet cable to the Airport Extreme - then both devices show up in the G4 utility. I have reset the Airport Express to factory settings many times and the Utility in my iMac 3.2 Ghz Intel Core 13 indicates that the Airport Express is working. Any ideas?

I suspect its to do with the WPA setup support changes.  My very old G3 seemed to have the same issue of not able to connect to Extreme or Express.  Used to connect before years back to Apple routers but refused to in recent time for reasons not explainable so I just connect it now via cable.

  • How to connect 2 ethernet cables to 1 port? Help me please.

My computer has one ethernet port, but I need to be able to connect two ethernet cables to it.
I am about to get satellite internet which requires an ethernet port and also about to sign up to a VoIP (Voice over IP) service which also requires an ethernet port.
Is there something I can buy or do to overcome this problem?
Sorry if this question seems obvious, but I really don't have a clue and would be very thankful for some good advice.
    Cheers,
    Crystal Venus.

    Crystal,
You need an Ethernet Hub, or Router. This will allow you to "Split" the connection from your satellite internet to the VOIP phone box, and to your computer. These are readily available at any computer store, like Best Buy, CompUSA etc.
Your internet provider might even have some info for you on this front.
