Can After Effects read Opentype fonts?

I was given a PSD file that uses a font called Soho Gothic Pro. In Photoshop, the designer toggled on Stylistic Alternatives under the Opentype menu option under Fonts (see picture).
However, I can't seem to find this same option in After Effects. So in AE it appears that the font the designer used isn't available, but in Photoshop it is. Is After Effects unable to read Opentype fonts?
Thanks for your time.

It's very much as Dave said - AE does not support any of the rule-based glyph substitution, the sad excuse behind it being that someone thought we don't need ligatures, table numbers and so on because they "break" with text animator (when half the time people don't even use this, but only basic transforms or effects). *crikey* Well, one can always hope for CS6....

  • CS4 After Effects / Illustrator Scaling Fonts Problem

I created an Adobe Illlustrator file consisting of three layers of text at three font sizes, 1296, 72, and 6 points on a WIndows Vista machine with CS4 (all updates) using the Impact font with no mods.  Then I used it in After Effects to create an 1280/720 pixel annimation that scales in from the largest font to the smallest.  I have Antialiasing set to More Accurate in Interpret Footage and PAR is not set in the Timeline.  As you can see from the example, it renders well to a point, then it begins to pixelate. I have reproduced the problem in several other scenarios.
However, when I create the same annimation in After Effects, using the same Impact font, I get smooth fonts from small to large, see below.  Obviously, I am doing something wrong, wither when I import the ai file into AE (I have tried importing it as Footage and as Vector Art), or I am creating the .ai incorrectly (just using defaults).
    I apprecriate your help!

Yes, thank you, Mylenium!  The results are seen in this clip.

  • Can After Effects CC handle this many Illustrator layers?

I designed a world map in Adobe Illustrator with many layers for a documentary about interwar Europe (1919-1939). The Illustrator map actually has 80 layers. Would this be a map with too many layers to animate in After Effects?
In AE I plan to add a camera to zoom in on parts of the map like Europe and the Middle East. But I'll also need to animate the opacity of individual layers to show territorial changes and invasions in Europe before and after 1919 Versailles Treaty and the 1938 Munich Agreement. The reason I have so many layers is that I thought I could use this one map in multiple different map animations for my film.
Can AE handle this many layers? Or is it wiser to keep the layers to a minimum number?
Also, is there no way in After Effects to group the layers other than pre-comping them? It would be great to be able to have sub-layers in AE like you can in Illustrator. I could then reduce the number of layers in my map from 80 to less than 20, by grouping all European states as sub-layers into a Europe layer, as so on for Africa, Asia, etc.
Unless I'm mistaken, Illustrator sub-layers are not visible in After Effects, are they?

    Rick and Mylenium,
Thank you both for your feedback. Much appreciated. Mylenium, I'm sure you're right. I probably was trying to do too much in one map. I'll follow your suggestion and use the minimum number of layers for each scenario. I'm spending too much time as it is looking for particular layers among the 80.
I do wish it were possible in AE to simply group layers without pre-comping them though. Or that Illustrator sub-layers could be visible. It would really help to streamline the workflow. I suppose I could precomp all layers and then simply add a camera to the pre-comp.
Rick I'll try the expression controls and parenting, but can you elaborate a little further regarding your suggestion of pre-planning in Illustrator?
Thank you both again for your helpful suggestions.

  • Can After Effects help out Premiere

    Dear,
I'm using Premiere CS3. I'm editing on AspectHD, and I'd like to have my co-editor working on his machine with DV version of the footage.
To have him have exactly what I've got so far, I went this way:
    - saved a copy of my project file
    - offlined all video clips it copy and kept audio files online (to avoid
having to reconnect them, by having my co-editor have them in the same
drive path and directory as I do so they reconnect automatically)
    - I imported CFHD project in a brand new DV project (so that my co-editor
can work in it and have proper specs)
So now I have an offline DV version of my project file with audio online, but when I try to reconnect medias with the DV clips, I need to reconnect them one by one; even more, I need to select them 2 times each before Premiere recognizes and accepts them as the proper media. (that is normal software workflow according to ADOBE support "except for the double selection I have to make")
When I just Make Offline and Reconnect Medias in my project file and keep the HD media, I just need to select and tie one file in each folder that hold clips and Premiere does the rest, but now it won't do it for this particular project.
I talked with ADOBE tech support and the guy told me it was how Premiere works, but couldn't help me out as to if AE could help me help PREMIERE reconnect all my file in batch instead of spending 1-2 days doing so.
Anyone knows if by importing my project file in AE I could batch reconnect medias ?
    Thank you.

Thank you Howard, didn't know about this.
But, still my co-editor doesn't have the Hard Drive space to have the files copied (1.4GB) and I don't have the money to buy it for him.
So I'd rather find a way to reconnect DV media to replace CFHD ones.
I posted on After Effects forum and it seems the program will respond as Premiere does. What about BRIDGE, is is there a way to reconnect media via it ?
This is like the basis of offline/online editing I can't believe that ADOBE technician haven't included something in the Creative Suite to do this !!?

  • Can logic pro read sound fonts?

I am currently trying to use Garageband and have reached a couple of cripling limitations.
    1) the orchestra instruments I need are not supported (oboe d'amore and baritone oboe)
    2) there are free sound fonts available which contain good samples of these instruments but Garageband can only read the FIRST instrument from a sound font?  Which basically (in my opinion) means it cannot read a sound font.
Can Logic Pro read soundfonts correctly?  Can I use all the instruments from a sound font using Logic Pro?

    jimka_2001 wrote:
When you say "can convert sound fonts"  do you mean just the first instrument in the sound font, or all of the instruments in a single sound font?
All of the instruments get converted into single patches located inside a folder. Only one set of samples from the soundfont exist, but each patch from the soundfont is available as a single entity. In other words, you don't select the soundfont and have individual patches available within the SF, each patch is loaded as a separate instrument.
Which makes me think... are you sure that Garageband isn't doing this?

  • Can After Effects work with an Intel Iris Pro chipset ?

    hello
    sorry for my english
i have a Mac Book Pro 2,3 Ghz, ssd 500 Go, 16 Go Ram, and graphic chipset Intel Iris Pro.
I want to work with After Effects, but i have a problem with 3D
    is it normal ?
thank you for your help (i want to be sure before buying After Effects)
    Franck

AE is mainly Open GL so yes it should work with the Iris Pro provided you have the latest driver. The only problem would be if Intel's driver did not include the Open GL version that Adobe is using.

  • How can After Effects plugins be used in Photoshop?

    Hi there,
Some of the After Effects plugins would be nice to have in Photoshop, too.
Is there any way to use the After Effects plugins directly in Photoshop?
Could be a wrapper (free or commercial), or a method?
    Thank you
    Cheers,
    Oli

No, there is no way to use them directly. and even a wrpper might be extremely tricky - the APIs use a completely different internal caching and memory management model. So your best bet is to work natively in AE or bug whatever plug-in vendors to produce a native PS version (which at the risk of shattering anyone's illusions is commercially unattractive or technically unfeasible to do for many of them).

  • Can After Effects deystroy a source swf file?

AFX is acting very odd lately, and since one of my collagues had the same problem, this is clearly not an isolated issue.
    Here's what happened:
I'm working with imported swf files (doing extensive cameramovement between layers, using rasterised formats is not an option). After a while, the program starts to show some errors.
The files that worked just fine a moment ago, crop themselves at weird places, start flickering during preview, or disappear altogether.
The layers, the files are still there, but they seem to be empty. Later on, I tried to open the source files with the normal SWF player, and they also became empty!
There is seemingly NOTHING in the file, which has been clearly working a moment ago!
    What's going on?

Turn of the Write XMP ID To Files On Import preference.
I have seen cases in which that causes problems with SWF files.

After Effects warning: The font dictionary can't be read.

Sorry there is not alot of info
I have tried restarting, uninstalling doing what it says on above and deleteing the adobefnt files and still can't get it to work
If anyone knows any fix to this it would be great.

As Todd said, 99% odf the time such errors are casued by "bad" fonts (freeware fonts, legacy fonts). Remove them and see if it makes a difference.

  • After Effects Font Issue vs. Photoshop & Dreamweaver

I installed AfterEffects and got the standard font error issue (After Effects warning: The font dictionary can't be read. Please restart your computer. If this problem persists, please go to http://www.adobe.com/go/learn_ae_fonterror ( 83 :: 3 ). HOWEVER, I don't have any font issues with Photoshop or Dreamweaver. I have a ton of fonts and going through one at a time would be a pain. How about making a program that will run the fonts that the other programs will also run?? For now, I have to get rid of AfterEffects and find something else.

There is no such thing as a "standard font error". Sorry, that's a dangerous generalization and oversimplification. I literalyl have dozens of font errors in my database and they all come with different causes and numbers, meaning they appear in different contexts/ parts of the program/ with different functions used. Since you did not provide any more info about your system or what version of AE you use, we can't even begin to guess. and just because otehr programs show certain fonts doesn't mean they necessarily show up elsewhere. You could have the same problems in otehr tools just as well, so I'm afraid "find something else" without even trying to resolve the issue is not really a productive way to go about the matter and not doing the whole thing justice. A single "bad" font can make or break a system and things like font managers, printer drivers and even your bog standard graphics driver al lhave to do with accessing and rendering fonts and could influence application programs....

  • After effects cc 2014 text presets can't import from bridge cc

I'm trying to use the presets for text animation but somehow I get the message that it doesn't support this file format. How come? and how to fix?

    > Any other ideas?
Note the last part of Rick's answer: You can still apply animation presets through the Effects & Presets panel in After Effects.
There is a bug in the After Effects CC 2014.1 (13.1) installer that causes the wrong startup script to be used. We're working on a fix for this now. In the meantime, you can just apply animation presets directly in After Effects.

  • The application "Adobe After Effects CC" can't be opened."

    Hello,
I am running a new mac pro (10.9.2 osx) and I just installed After Effects CC. I keep getting the error:
The application “Adobe After Effects CC” can’t be opened. -10810
I also installed Illustrator, Lightroom and Photoshop and those seem to be working.
I tried changing permissions on all enclosed After Effects files and folders to read & write. No go...
    Any help is appreciated.
    Thanks!

That is a Mac OS error. See this page:
    http://www.thexlab.com/faqs/error-10810.html
Begin by restarting your computer and starting no applications other than After Effects.
