Can airport be setup with an ethernet connection?

I'm having challnges setting up my Airport express via ethernet cable connection directly to my router.  It will setup wirelessly no problem, but I occasionally get dropouts when streaming music and I'm hoping to remedy that with a direct cable connection.
I believe I have to turn the wireless option off via utility, which I did, but still having issues - can anyone provide some insight as to the proper settings to connect it via ethernet cable?
Here is my setups if it helps:
Airport express, model A1264 (which is 2nd gen I believe)
Cisco router (provided by my intenet provider)
Macbook Air, running 10.8.5
Airport utility version 6.3.1
Thanks!
Phil

AirPort Utility 5.5.3 will work fine for that.
Reset the Express back to factory default settings as follows:
Power off the Express for a few minutes
Then, hold in the reset button first, and keep holding it for another 10 seconds while you simultaneously plug the Express back in to power
Release the reset button and allow a full minute for the Express to restart to a slow, blinking amber light
Connect the Ethernet cable from a LAN <-> port on the Cisco router to the Ethernet port on the Express
Open up AirPort Utility 5.5.3, click on the AirPort Express, and click Continue
Enter a device name that you want to use for the Express and password, etc.and click Continue
Choose the "Join" option, then click Continue and then click the option for the Express to disable the wireless and have the Express connect to the  the network using Ethernet, then click Continue
Review the settigns and click Update. Allow a minute for the Express to restart.
You may now need to restart both the Cisco router and the Expess and you should be all set.

I have Airport Extreme as the base unit and an Express unit in a room separated by a brick wall to improve signal. Express shows a green light indicating signal but my iPad does not perform well. How can I improve other than hardwire ethernet connection?

Other suggestions, and more info about the nature of the problem, may be in this Apple tech note.

For example, you might find that the brick wall is not the only problem. There may be other devices pumping out enough wireless interference to be making things even worse.
I agree with Bob Timmons that Ethernet is best and most reliable. And that powerline (which I use) is easier and potentially faster than wireless...but only if your power lines do not have electrical devices plugged in which produce electrical noise on the line. Powerline will be slower than Gigabit Ethernet.
Ethernet cable is the only way to ensure that the signal goes directly there in a shielded way for a clear fast signal. Wireless and powerline are much slower because of all the other things the signal has to fight past to get to the other device.

  • Can I use the Airport Express only with a LAN connection?

Because I want to connect my macbook (+ all other hardware) via WLAN with my Speedport Router. Which is connect via LAN cable with the Airport Express. Can I then deactivate the WLAN function in the Airport software?
When I try this, I can configure the setup. This works till a restart, after that I cannot find the Airport Express. Already I connect the macbook with the LAN-cable it works again.

    look that
so i have connected my components.
i only want to deactivate the WLAN in the Airport Configuration. if i connected in this way it works without problems. after restart i cannot find the airport express.

  • Can Airport Extreme Base Station 802.11g Connect To Park's Free WiFi?

The RV resort where I'm staying has free WiFi for Internet connections. It shows up on my iBook's Airport list of possible networks in the menu bar, along with my own local network which is an older Airport Extreme Base Station (white dome 802.11g) which has my HP printer plugged into it via an ethernet cable.
However, when I am connected to the park's WiFi via the laptop's Airport network choices, I am NOT connected to my AEBS, and therefore cannot print to the printer wirelesslessly. Is there a way for the AEBS to make the connection to the park's WiFi so I can use both Internet and printer from my iBook G4 without having to switch from one network to use the other?

Is there a way for the AEBS to make the connection to the park's WiFi so I can use both Internet and printer from my iBook G4 without having to switch from one network to use the other?
Sorry, but no. You cannot connect your iBook's AirPort to more than one wireless network at a time. Since it will be highly unlikely that you will be able to create a Wireless Distribution System (WDS) between your RV resort's Wi-Fi and the 802.11g AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBS), you won't be able to extend it to meet your needs.

  • Can I extend the number of ethernet connections

I want to use my airport extreme for both wireless and wired.  Since there are only three ethernet connections can I expand the connections by adding a unit that has just more ethernet connections?  If so which connection on the airport extreme would you use as the uplink to the switch?

can I expand the connections by adding a unit that has just more ethernet connections?
Yes, you could add an Ethernet switch. They come in 5-port, 8-port, 16-port, etc. versions. Buy a switch with a few more ports than you need at the present time, since they have a way of filling up faster than you might imagine.
Connect the Ethernet switch to one of the three LAN <-> ports on the AirPort Extreme.
Since the Ethernet ports on the AirPort Extreme will handle Gigabit speeds, make sure that you get a Gigabit Ethernet switch.
The computer/electronic superstore near you will have just what you need. Recommended brands are Netgear and Cisco.

  • Airport Extreme - Direct TV Genie Ethernet connection not working

PLease help and please use simple terms for me as I am not the most tech savvy guy. I Recently replaced my old Netgear wireless router with a new Airport Extreme. Wireless is working great! And I made the same ethernet connections I made before and they are working good with the exception of our Direct TV Genie. I spoke with the tech support and they claim they are not compatible with apple products. I'm not sure how or why that would be possible. Does anyone have any suggestions?
    Thanks

Thanks Lucien. The same technician told me you also can no longer direct connect to an airport base station. He said the new Genie will shut down any clients if you do this. Perhaps he was just trying to get out of runing the cable.
He insists that I need to get a cheap router... plug it into my modem, then plug my airport extreme into that.
My wireless conection has been up a couple hours.. hopefully it stays up.

  • Can AppleTV be setup to use Ethernet instead of wireless?

When I use the wireless, I often get freezing and jumping during movie playback. I've connected the AppleTV via ethernet cable (Cat6) to the router which connects the all systems in the house, but unless I have it connected via wireless... none of the computers (iTunes) see it. Is there some setting necessary to allow ethernet connection to the iTunes library or is AppleTV only capable of wireless connections?

The Apple TV can be connected either wirelessly or with wired ethernet and it automatically detects which to use based upon whether an ethernet cable is connected to the unit. If none of your computers (iTunes) can see the Apple TV when it is connected with the ethernet cable then you either have a setup or network problem or the other computers are on a different local network.
Have you tried restarting or resetting the Apple TV after you switch the connections? You can restart the Apple TV by holding down on the remote's menu and minus ("-") buttons simultaneously for about six seconds.

  • Can flash app work with GigE ethernet Camera?

    Hi there,
Have anyone have similiar experience work with GigE ethernet camera with flash app?
recently need to test high resolution with high fps such as 1600x1200 @60 fps work with flash application or it required to via other C#/delphi/C++ programming to work together?
    In windows xp environment
all GigE are connected  local , not to internet server.

    please be advised,

The best way you can go in my opinion is developing a java application that connects and controls the camera, then you can use merapi to call java functions
    Merapi is a Java-AS3 bridge (http://merapiproject.net/)

  • How 2 Setup a simple ethernet connection from PC to MAC? HELP, gon 2 heck!

just spent the LAST hour tryin to set it up and then two hours researchin WHY its not working..
I've done the search in Finder's Help Menu and apple doc web pages...apparently macbook's don't need a crossover cable and I have done this in the past...
there are no users setup on my macbook, just me the "admin"...
    Window's sharing is turned on...
I have typed in the address under services list and typed that in a window in XP and it errors out.. WINDOWS cannot find \\192.169.11.18\admin, check the spelling and try again..
on the Mac Side when i go to sys preferences and then NETWORK, I click on Built-in Ethernet, it shows green and it says, Built-in Ethernet is currently active and has the IP addres 191.168.0.44, which doesn't match whats up above, should it?
ON the PC side, I go to View Network Connections and it does show a local area connection, status is lmited, and duration shows a timer countdown and speed shows 1.0Gbps... Activity shows Packets sent as 79 and recieved as 0 <-- this to me indicates they are connected right? theres something going on there isn't there?
I simply want to be able to access my macbook from the pc and vice versa..
Can anyone help or point me in the right direction pLEASE?
    thanks in advance!!

p.s. I came across this post in my research.. it seems helpful but I need some clarification..
    1. how do I change the IP addresses of both the PC and the Mac to match?
    2. On the Mac side, HOW do i found out my nameofcomputer and the yourhomedirectoryname he refers to?
    3. HOW do i get this to work? it shouldn't be this difficult correct?
    here is the post
Make sure you have Windows file sharing turned on the Mac side. (Sys Prefs/Sharing). On the PC side you need to share a folder of some kind. I usually share the My Documents folder, and it should give an option to share as a different name. So I share it as mydocuments, or my_documents. If your concerned about security share it as my_documents$. People trying to get in won't think of the $ part so it will make it harder for them to get in.
Make sure both computers get an IP address, and also make sure their on the same subnet. If you have to, *give them both a manual IP address like 192.168.2.1 on the mac and 192.168.2.2 on the PC.*
I'm sure you probably don't care which side connects so you can either right click on My Computer and Map Network Drive then put *\\nameofcomputer\yourhomedirectorynameonmac (ie. \\ibook\michael\)* It will ask for a password, make sure you use the username/password on the Mac and not the PC. You may have to correct the username. UNIX is case sensitive so make sure the password is exact.
If you want to connect using the Mac, go to the "Go" menu in Finder and then down to "Connect to Server". Then put the following, smb://IPaddress/sharedfolder. (ie. smb://192.168.2.2/my_documents) It should ask for a username/password, make sure here that you use the PC username and password. Again, you may have to correct the username.

    awesome link and page.. thanks..
but no dice... after using google, finally figured out how to ping each device..it failed on both ends..
so I can't ping the mac from the pc.. and I can't ping the PC from the mac..
again all I'm doing is putting in a cat 5 cable into the ethernet port on the macbook pro running 10.4 and the other end into the ethernet port on a PC running XP SP3
I have done this before with these same cables that i'm using now, though it was the same mac but a different PC..
    any ideas?

  • Airport express setup with iPad and no computer -- possible?

In September I will be staying a week in Germany in an apartment that lacks wireless but does have a broadband LAN connection. I would prefer not to take my MacBook Pro and, instead, rely on my iPad 2. But there's the rub: no way to connect via ethernet. I do have an Airport Express I could take with me. Is there a way to use it, creating my own wireless network, without having a laptop with me and using Airport Utility to set it up? Or am I stuck with lugging my MacBook Pro?

Is there a way to use it, creating my own wireless network
What I do with my Airport Express is to configure it to create a wireless network using DHCP at home before I leave, and then wherever I am, I just plug it in to the network via ethernet cable and turn it on. The Airport Express will grab an IP address from the ethernet network and create its own network that you can connect to.
So far, that has worked for me everywhere I have been.
From reports it appears iOS 5 will have the ability to configure an Airport Express, but we don't know the release date of that.

  • Can AirPort Extreme "distribute" from a wifi connected laptop?

I live in a corporate housing unit with a free wifi connection. BUT devices can only log on via a web-page interface. I'd like to network my Wii, TiVo box, and MacBook Pro together, but only the MacBook can manage the web-page interface. I have an AirPort Extreme base station. Can I somehow use it to create a sub-network (from the free wifi) to connect my other devices?

+I have an AirPort Extreme base station. Can I somehow use it to create a sub-network (from the free wifi) to connect my other devices?+
Sorry, this is not possible with an AirPort Extreme because it cannot "receive" a wireless network and also "create" another at the same time.
The main router at the facility has most likely been configured to only allow one connection per room, (just like the wireless at most hotels).
IF...the router at the facility will allow multiple connections per room, (check with the network administrator first to find out) you might be able to make the AirPort Extreme work if you also had an AirPort Express 802.11"n" version to use along with the AirPort Extreme. If you can get your hands on an AirPort Express 802.11"n" and have some time to experiment, post back for further details.

  • Airport for Internet with Wired Ethernet for local network

I'm trying to set up a small local network of 3 PC laptops connected via a router to a Mac which is acting as the central repository for the 3 PCs. The 3 PCs and the Mac are all connected by Ethernet cables to the router which is deliberately isolated from the Internet. However, I also want the Mac to use Airport to get access to the Internet via another router which does have Internet access and provides wireless support.
What happens is that the wireless Internet access for the Mac works OK as long as I have the Mac disconnected from the small PCs+router network. As soon as I connect the Ethernet cable to the Mac, it loses Internet access.
It seems that the Mac is preferring to try to use the wired connection over the wireless connection for Internet access.
How can I force the Mac to use the wireless connection for Internet access and leave the wired connection for my small local network? That is, how can I change the priorities for the two network interfaces (similar to the interface metric setting in Windows XP)?

read this and then look at this.. this is a screen shot of what you need to do..
    http://www.ofzenandcomputing.com/wp-content/uploads/2007/02/Picture%203.png
if you share your wireless and tell it to share it THROUGH your ethernet you'll be okay..
another thing that you may want to do is to access your routers settings and tell it to work as a switch rather then a router. however if you can get it to work using the article up top then you might not need to do that.

  • Airport express setup with wireless n, g and b devices

    Hi
I'm trying to determine the best way to configure my network.  I have an Airport express N 1st generation connected to my cable modem.  When I connect my computer directly to the cable modem via Ethernet I can achieve 50mbps down.10mbps up according to speedtest and comcasts tests.  However, when I connect the airport express (using a free non occupied channel, wpa2 and default settings)  to the modem and connect wirelessly on my computer (has a wireless n card) the speeds are greatly reduced to 5-10mbps down.
Here is a list of the other devices connected.  It's my guess the wireless g and b devices are slowing down the network.  Is there anything I can do to improve my speed or would a dual band router be the best course of action?  I also have an old airport express G that I can use if possible (don't know if I can somehow route the slower traffic there)
    iPhone 5
    iPhone 4S
    Apple TV (wireless n)
    Ps3 (wireless g)
    Roku (wireless b)
    Dell laptop wireless n
    Dell laptop wireless g
    Thanks in advance

Thanks for clarifying that for me. If your goal is to use this second wireless network just for 802.11b/g devices, I would recommend using one of your older 802.11b/g AXs instead of the newer one. In addition (whichever AX you end up using), not only does it need to be connected by Ethernet, it should be reconfigured as a bridge. This will allow any wireless clients connected to it to gain Internet access from the AEBSn.
Another thing you will want to do is to make sure that its 2.4 GHz radio is operating on a radio channel that is at least 3-5 channels away from the 2.4 GHz radio on the AEBSn. This will prevent any type of Wi-Fi interference between them.
For the remaining AX & AXns, you can now go ahead and configure them to join the appropriate wireless network for streaming. I would suggest joining the AX to the AX providing the 802.11b/g network, and the AXns to join the AEBSn's wireless network.
