Can airport express work through walls for outdoor use?

I am looking to add outdoor speakers and want to know if airport express will work through my exterior walls. The speakers would be about 15 feet away from the indoor outlet.

The AiPort Express will supply a wired audio feed from the analog/digital jack on the device to your speakers, so you will need to plan on running speaker cable from your speakers/amp to the location of the AirPort Express.
Suggest that you take your laptop to the proposed location for the AirPort Express and log on to the Internet to see how your connection performs. If everything seems to be OK, you should not have difficulty receiving a good signal for AirTunes.
If you do not get good results during your test, then you will need to move the AirPort Express closer to your "main" router in order to get a better signal for AirTune streaming. That will of course, mean a longer speaker cable.

I saw there are three ports out from the device, one is an ethernet port and I wonder if I can use that port to connect a laser printer with a network card built-in. Unfortunately, the AirPort Express Setup Guide is not very clear about the uses of the Ethernet port.
There is a special feature on the AirPort Express called ProxySTA that will allow the Ethernet port to be enabled when the Express "joins" a wireless network. This feature must be enabled using the Manual Setup option when the Express is configured using the AirPort Utility application.
The setting is found when you click the Wireless tab (just below the icons). Enter a check mark next to "Allow Ethernet Clients" and this will activate the Ethernet port, which will function as a remote LAN port.

As long as you are talking about the N version of the Express.. what is often called Gen1.. then any switch will do the job. The express is only 100mbit.
The cost of network switch is $20-40 depending on the number of ports and if it is older 10/100 or gigabit.. IMHO buy 8 port gigabit.. any brand you want,, they are much the same.. metal case ones are nicer than plastic.. but they are cheap consumer item in any computer store.
If you buy what I suggest, it will be useful well into the future.. the slower 5 port is cheaper but the usefulness of it into the future is questionable..

You will need to install an App like Print Central on the iPad to try to print to the printer. It will allow you to print to most printers. Check with their support folks if you need more info.

Can I attach USB drive to Airport Express USB port

I would like to attach a USB drive to my Apple airport Express USB port so that I can back up my data on my MBP and have my music stored on it for playing back over Apple TV.
Is there any issues to doing this? As an example, how would I see the drive?

Well, you can certainly attach a USB drive to the port on the AirPort Express.....but nothing will happen if you do this....since the USB port on the Express will only support a compatible printer and Keyspan remote control.
You will need an AirPort Extreme if you want to attach a shared hard drive to the USB port.

I doubt it is available.. and since a new Mac doesn't even have an optical drive.. there is no need whatsoever today for the cd.. it is all available in the OS or download. In fact the stuff on the cd will now be totally out of date.

FWIW. I have used up to four AirPort Express Base Stations (AX) for streaming sucessfully in pretty much the way you have described. I didn't have a need to try more so I can't attest that more would or would not work.

There is an ethernet cable running from it through a wall to the Xbox 360 and an Airport Express serving as the base for the wireless network. I have an iBook on the other side of the wall and about 10 feet and an iMac about 20 feet with one wall in between. These two have some fluctuation in their signal but only between 4 bars and 3. I just got an iPad 2 and it is causing me grief because it struggles to maintain a connection just another 10 feet from the iBook. If I put it next to the iMac when it has full 4 bars the iPad gets maybe 2. The iPad has full bars if next to the router. That kind of defeats the purpose of buying an iPad. So, my question is how to rearrange the network so the iPad is happy in the living room where I mostly use it. I had considered moving the iMac and using it as a base station to free the Airport Express for other duty but where I want to move it is further away from the living room. Right now the Airport is wired to the router. Is this necessary for it to be a part of the network? I know I can use it to get music from iTunes to speakers but would that placement also work as a wireless extender? Would just buying another router for the Xbox location and putting the Airport there also be a better solution?

ladybastet, let's clean up some terminology. You should designate only one router for your network. At present that is the Linksys. Your wireless access point is the Express, and it gets its network connection from the Linksys. Is that correct?

Now that you know your Linksys is the router, is the above correct? Unless the Linksys is also a wireless access point, the iPad's proximity to it will not matter. Only its proximity to the device creating the wireless network is a factor. In your case, I believe that is the Express.

Using the iMac to share a wired Ethernet connection to create its own wireless network is certainly possible, but it is less than ideal. For one, the iMac would have to be powered on all the time.
You do not need or want another router.
It is impossible for me to be certain of your network environment (meaning, the size and configuration of your home, the proximity of competing wireless networks, the number of network devices, and the potential for interference) but you might be better off replacing the wired Linksys router with an AirPort Extreme. That would give you the ability to create a "roaming network" or to use your Express to extend the Extreme's wireless network. I think this would be the easiest solution, but given the uncertainly of your description this expense may not be necessary.
Much of my confusion stems from your original question: "Can my Airport Express be used to extend the signal for an iPad2" - the quick answer is yes, but a prerequisite question is, "what signal?" The only "signal" I can determine that may be relevant is the one created by the Express. Once we have the terminology fixed, perhaps we can fix what's wrong with your network.

We recently moved to a big old brick and stone farmhouse. When Comcast came they installed their new wireless gateway. Unfortunately the construction of my house is pretty solid. Using the Airport Utility, it seems like it connects but the signal is no better. The AirPort Express can extend the wireless signal from the Comcast gateway if it is permanently connected to the gateway using a wired Ethernet connection, and the Express is configured to create a wireless network using the same name and password as the Comcast wireless network.
The Express cannot wirelessly extend the signal from the Comcast gateway, since the wireless "extend" feature will only work with other Apple routers.
The Express can "join" the wireless network provided by the Comcast gateway for use with AirPlay or a remote printer at the USB port, but when the Express "joins" a network, it does not provide any additional wireless signal coverage in that setting.

Why not add a simple 5-port Ethernet switch to the AirPort Express?
One port on the switch will be used to connect to the Express, and 2 more for the phone and printer/scanner. You will still have 2 free ports for more devices.
Simple plug and play. No programming or configuration needed. Something like this,for example at any electronics superstore:

You can connect the printer/scanner to the USB port on the Express and go through the process to "Add" a new device....but only the printer will work....no scan function, maintenance, supply checks, etc. here. Probably not what you want.

You pretty much stated the correct wiring. There should be an Ethernet cable connected between the modem and the WAN (circle of dots) port on the AirPort Express base station.
