Can airport express work through walls for outdoor use?

I am looking to add outdoor speakers and want to know if airport express will work through my exterior walls.  The speakers would be about 15 feet away from the indoor outlet.

The AiPort Express will supply a wired audio feed from the analog/digital jack on the device to your speakers, so you will need to plan on running speaker cable from your speakers/amp to the location of the AirPort Express.
Suggest that  you take your laptop to the proposed location for the AirPort Express and log on to the Internet to see how your connection performs. If everything seems to be OK, you should not have difficulty receiving a good signal for AirTunes.
If you do not get good results during your test, then you will need to move the AirPort Express closer to your "main" router in order to get a better signal for AirTune streaming. That will of course, mean a longer speaker cable.

AirPort Utility is the application that must be used to setup and make any configuration changes to the AirPort Express. I'm not aware of an "App" for this.
If you could borrow a computer from someone there for 30 minutes or maybe use the computer in the lobby, you could download AirPort Utility and reconfigure your Express. To help with setup, use an ethernet cable from the computer to the Express to help AirPort Utility "see" the Express.

  • Can Airport Express USB port substitute for the USB Power Adapter?

Literature on website says USB port will only "recognize" printers. But can USB port be used to power iPod, since no "recognition" is needed, just power?

Yes, unless the iPod is a third generation full-size model, which can't charge from any USB source.

  • Can I use an Airport Express to extend coverage for Apple TV

I hooked up an Apple TV today to replace my Airport Express. Is it possible to use the Airport Express to extend coverage throughout my house for the appleTV, or are they not compatible in that sense?

Will the ATV work as far as the wireless signal goes? Basically, I can walk halfway through my backyard and them my itouch will cut out. I want to be able to control music (as I do inside) with my Itouch throughout my back yard, and my thought was to put the AX in a location closer to where I would use my ipod outside in an attempt to increase the wireless range.
I just played with the settings on the Airport and switched it to "enhance an existing wireless network." Tomorrow I'll try to see if this helps to accomplish what I am setting out to do. If anyone has any feedback, by all means share it.

Is this an older "round" version of the AirPort Extreme? If yes, it is true that AirPort Utility 6.x no longer supports the older AirPort Extreme and AirPort Express models.
A model number......located on the bottom of the Extreme or on the side of the Express would be helpful to confirm what you have.
Apple probably does want you to buy a new AirPort Extreme.
The workaround might be to use a Mac or PC running a 5.x version of AirPort Utility.
A more complicated workaround would be to install AirPort Utility 5.6 on Mountain Lion.  This is not supported by Apple......it does work for me.....but may not work for you. See this article for more details:

If you are sure that you are entering the correct password, then this sounds like an iPhone issue, so your best bet will be to post in the iPhone Support Community so that the experts over there can help.

  • How can I make the 10/100BASE-T Ethernet port on my Airport Express work as a LAN-port? The AE is currently extending my network (generated by a Time Capsule)

    Dear all.
I currently have a WIFI-network established by a Time Capsule. I want to use my Airport Express as WIFI-receiver for my Samsung TV. How do I pair them up so that the 10/100BASE-T ethernet port works as a LAN-port? I used to do it by setting it up as WDS but I understand this is not suitable for a "n" network.
    Thx.

Under the wireless settings for the TIme Capsule, make sure that there is a check mark next to "Allow this network to be extended"
Then configure the AirPort Express to "Extend a wireless network". The Ethernet port on the Express is automatically enabled in this type of configuration and the AirPort Express will also provide more wireless coverage in the area where it is located.
See Apple's instructions in the link below. The iilustration shown in the support document shows an AirPort Extreme as the extending device, but the setup for the AirPort Express would be exactly the same

Hi guys, recently had the same issue. You require an older version of Airport Utility to configure the older Airport Express. It can be found here.

  • Airport Express works with my Mac but not XP Pro

Hello I have an Airport Express that I set up and use with my G4 laptop flawlessly.
My Problem is trying to get my PC, running XP Pro, to play-nice with the Airport Express.
The nutty thing is that this set up was working perfectly for months and then quit for some reason. Anyway, the I use WEP encryption and I have the same passwords set for both computers. Now, the PC sees the AE and is apparently able to connect with it but gives the alert that it has only limited connectivity and functionality with the network. Strange...
Now, as far as I can tell there are two passwords to the AE. One is the Base Station password and the other one is for the encryption. The PC never seems to ask for the Base Station password which seems odd. As I said before, this worked well at one time (with WEP) so I don't know what's going on. I also obviously don't know XP at all so I apologize. Any advice is greatly appreciated. Thanks very much.

Thanks for the link. I have set the AE to use WPA encryption using a 13 character plain-text network key password. I'm led to believe that this would be a palateable password for both the Mac and PC...of course this doesn't fix things. I should know that simply entering the same network key on both computers would not work. That would be too easy... Well now, in XP under Network Properties it only offers WEP or None for Data Encryption. This is weird right? Thanks a lot for all your help.

  • Airport Express works, but MacBook doesn't when connected directly to Modem

I have an interesting problem. I have Verizon DSL. Airport Express works, but Linksys and Netgear wifi routers don't work. Further more, if I disconnect the wifi router and directly connect a MacBook or a Windows notebook they don't work. These devices work if I enter a static IP address though. It is DHCP that doesn't work.
I have been using Verizon DSL for several years, and most recently I was using a Netgear wifi router. A few days ago it lost internet connection. Thinking that the Netgear broke, I bought a new Linksys WRT54GL to replace it. But it didn't work either. I happened to have an Airport Express lying around, so I connected that and surprisingly it worked! Then I wrote down the IP address shown by Airport Utility and typed that IP into Netgear as a static IP address and it worked too. If I remove all wifi equipment and connect a Windows PC or a MacBook directly to the DSL modem then neither works. (Note: my DSL modem doesn't use PPPoE it uses DHCP.)
So it seems that something changed with Verizon's DHCP such that only Airport Express can work. Contacting Verizon support was useless. What is so magical about Airport Express? I can't use Airport Express permanently because I have 3 wired computers to connect also, and Airport Express have ethernet ports. Airport Extreme does, so I am wondering if I should get one of those. Will the magic of Airport Express work in Extreme also?
Does anyone know what is going on? How is Airport Express work with Verizon DHCP when nothing else can?

Hello petilon. Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
Does anyone know what is going on? How is Airport Express work with Verizon DHCP when nothing else can?
It sounds like Verizon is keying on the MAC address of the device connected to its modem ... so either they require that you register a MAC address with them or there is a problem with the modem in that it is retaining it even though you change the device connected.
If you haven't already, be sure to perform a complete power recycle when changing out network equipment. The following should be done each time:
o Power-down, the modem, router, and computer(s); wait at least 10-15 minutes. Order is not critical. If the modem has a backup battery, it should be removed and replaced to make sure that any stored configuration information is erased.
o Power-up the modem; wait at least 10-15 minutes.
o Power-up the router; wait at least 5-10 minutes.
    o Power-up the computer(s).

The network on my airport express works, have wifi on the ipods, etc. But when I open airport utility on my mac and on the iphone nothing exists. Why?

Reboot the modem. Just pull the power for a few seconds. No settings are lost.  The laptop getting through to the internet is not relevent.

  • Airport express working on mac but not on pc

My airport express works wonderfully on my Macbook Pro, but I would also like my PC to connect to the same network. I have tried everything that I have found online, and the PC will not recognize or "find" the airport network. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Ok, thanks for the additional info.
    I suggest trying the following:
o Temporarily disable the WPA/WPA2 Personal wireless encryption, and then, check to see if any of the XP devices can now access the network/Internet?
o If they can't then, while the encryption is still disabled, change the radio mode on the AX to a non-"n" one, like "802.11g only." You can access this mode, by holding down the <Option> (Mac) or <Control> (PC) key prior to selecting the mode within the AirPort Utility. Can they access the network/Internet now?

  • Very basic questions about how Airport Express works

I'm using a non-Apple wireless router at home. I'd like to stream music from my iBook to my stereo. Will an Airport Express do that? Will it get confused that there's another access point? Can my iBook receive streaming radio via the non-Apple wireless router and send it to Airport Express?
Alternatively: can I simply replace my non-Aple wireless router with an Airport Express? Will an Airport Express work as a wireless router? Will it to DHCP and NAT so that multiple computers can connect to the Internet through it?
    Thanks.

johnbkim, Welcome to the discussion area!
I'd like to stream music from my iBook to my stereo. Will an Airport Express do that?
    Yes
Will it get confused that there's another access point?
You would simply configure the AirPort Express (AX) to join your current wireless network.
Can my iBook receive streaming radio via the non-Apple wireless router and send it to Airport Express?
To stream non-iTunes items you will need to use Airfoil.
Alternatively: can I simply replace my non-Aple wireless router with an Airport Express?
Yes as long as you don't have any devices connected to that router via Ethernet.
Will it to DHCP and NAT so that multiple computers can connect to the Internet through it?
    Yes it is a router.
