Can airport extreme be used to back up my macbook pro files?

Am looking for a backup drive for my MacBook Pro and PC and for sharing files, particularly photos.

For PC backups there are no Windows or Apple created software that will wireless backup your computer. There are some 3rd party software that may work, you can do an internet search for "windows time machine".
Typically it would be an easy setup. The easiest setup would be with an iOS 5 device (iPhone, iPad, iPod touch). If you have any troubles or if you're uncomfortable, please contact AppleCare Technical Support for free assistance. You get 90 days of complimentary phone support with new Apple hardware devices.

  • Can Airport Extreme be used to back up my computer without an external hard drive?

I was recently told that I could back up my computer on an Airport Extreme with out an external hard drive.  Is this true?  My iMac is currently connected to an Airport Extreme that is also connected to an external hard drive.  It has been my understanding that an Airport Extreme is used to connect to WI-FI and to periferals such as a printer etc.  Am I confusing Airport Extreme, Airport Time Capsule and Time Machine?  Need help!

Am I confusing Airport Extreme, Airport Time Capsule and Time Machine?  Need help!
Just a bit. Both the AirPort Extreme and the Time Capsule are wireless routers provided by Apple. The main difference between them is that the Time Capsule has a built-in hard drive. Both routers also support attached USB hard drives.
Time Machine, on the other hand, is a software product that provides for a means to back up Mac computers. It can back up to hard drives attached to the Mac or located on the network. Time Machine can also back up to USB hard drives attached to the 6th generation AirPort Extreme and any generation of the Time Capsule. Finally, Time Machine can back up to the internal hard drive in a Time Capsule. Actually that is the primary reason for the Time Capsule ... although it can also use its internal drive for general storage as well.
Hopefully that help demystify things a bit.

If you have not already done so, your chances will really improve if you....
    1) Connect the printer to the USB port on the AirPort Extreme
    2) Download and install Bonjour Print Services for Windows on the PC

  • Can airport extreme connect using a mac mini.  the base station is not recognized so i cannot configure it manually

can airport extreme connect using a mac mini.  this airport extreme wont connect to internet via my cable modem.  I cant set it to bridge mode because it doesnt appear as a base station in airport utitlity...help

First, is your AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBS) a 802.11n, 802.11g, or 802.11b model? Second, what is your primary goal for using this base station? Finally, is the AEBS the only router in your current network configuration?

  • Can AirPort Extreme be used as a signal extender?

Can AirPort Extreme be used as a wireless extender, wi fi booster?

If you are planning to "extend" wirelessly......the AirPort Extreme will "extend" the wireless signal from another Apple wireless router....but....it will not "extend" the wireless signal from a 3rd party router.

  • Can Airport extreme be used as a repeater from the BT home hub

can Airport extreme be used as a repeater from the BT home hub because my laptop will be very far away and i currently get a rubbish signal on my Windows pc so when i upgrade to the mac pro i am wonderimg if i could use the airport extreme as a repeater to strenthen my already rubbish signal??

You might want to check with BT to see if they have a device to do what you want.
Using wireless only, the AirPort Extreme will only "extend" or "repeat" the wireless signal if it has been produced by another Apple router. It is not compatible with routers from other suppliers for this purpose.

  • Can I unplug my time machine hard drive from my airport extreme and plug it direcly on my MacBook pro without having to do a new back up?

I want to bring my back up hard drive on a trip, but now it's attahced to my Airport Extreame.
If I unplug it and plug it directly on my MacBook Pro, it'll keep updating or I'll lose all my back ups and have to restart again?

Yes, but you'll probably have to manually "mount" the sparse bundle containing your backups.  See the blue box in Time Machine - Frequently Asked Question #17 for details.
Also, I hate to have to tell you this, but backing-up that way is unreliable and not supported by Apple.   See:  Using Time Machine with an Airport Extreme Air Disk.

  • Can Airport Extreme be used in client mode like Airport Express?

I have a d-link DSL wireless router (upstairs in my house) and a printer (downstairs). I have an airport extreme, and I want to use it to allow wireless printing downstairs.
Currently I have to keep switching between the two wireless networks (one with internet, one with printer).
Can I just have one network? The Airport Express seems to have something called Client Mode which allows this, but not so on the Airport Extreme...
    Any suggestions?

Thanks Duane - that answers my question. A little annoying really as the airport express can do this, and the layout of my house means that running a cable between them is problematic.
Looks like I am stuck with switching networks every time. Damnit.

  • What external Hard drive can I get to use w/ my iMac and Macbook pro w/ Lion software? I have never used one. I need to back up my photos, iTunes, documenta, etc., Im a nursing student and very worried about losing my stuff. Any suggestions?

I have had my macbook pro and desktop since 2008 now.  I have never had time to just sit down and learn about time machine and external hard drives.  I am in nursing school and barely have time to breathe, so when I try to read the threads, all the tech terms run together.  I have been referred to LaCIe, but I read some things saying problems with Lion (which I am highly disapointed in so far-but like I said, I have not had a lot of time to sit down and try to figure out out the kinks), Is there a good external harddrive anyone reccommends that will be easy/simple (not because I am lazy- I literally have no time w/ all my school work to figure out something complicated) , and go with my desk top and lap top?
My laptop started messing up in class the other day, and it has a lot of memory left, so I don't understand.  It kept freezing up like a PC.  Ever since I downloaded Lion, it seems my computers have gotten slower. ;(    I have MacKeeper downloaded on both of them. I cleaned stuff off, it seems to be working better right now. But I am still soooo scared that something will happen and I will lose all of my info.
I would be grateful of any advice/suggestions that anyone can give me.
    Thanks

  • Connecting airport extreme, netgear dsl modem, windows 7, and Macbook pro

I'm having a problem connecting my airport extreme to my netgear modem, windows 7 pc and my Macbook Pro.  Until a few days ago, I had a Westell wireless dsl modem and everything worked fine.  Now, the only way I can connect to the internet is through my desktop pc and the hardwired modem.

If your goal is to extend/boost the range of your Netgear router with either or both of the AirPorts, this will not work wirelessly ... at least, not completely by wireless. That is because, WDS is not standard and each manufacturer has had creative license to implement it as they see fit for their products.
Instead, you have at least two other choices to use the Netgear (as the main Internet router) with the AirPorts:
Connect one AirPort directly to the Netgear by Ethernet, and then, configure both AirPorts for an extended wireless network. In this configuration, you would be running two separate wireless networks; one created by the Netgear, and the second the extended network created by the AirPorts.
Connect both AirPorts directly to the Netgear by Ethernet, and then, configure all of the routers for a roaming network. In this configuration, there would be a "single" wireless network where wireless network clients can literally roam from one router to another and still be on the "same" wireless network.

  • Why is my airport extreme signal strength so weak on my macbook pro?

I live in a 4 story brownstone, next to neighbors with lots of wireless routers. My macbook pro (OS X 10.6.8) frequently is dropped from my airport extreme router. The strange thing is, the macbook receives a much stronger connection to my next door neighbor's wireless router (which is behind 2 brick walls, and down 1 floor) than it does to my airport extreme router - located 15 feet to my right with no interfering walls. In fact, I can stay solidly connected to my neighbor's router even when I'm 2 floors above him.
There are 4 other devices in my house connected to my airport extreme router. All have no problems connecting.
An ipad, which moves around from floor to floor, even outside on my front stoop.
A stationary imac located 4 inches away from the router
A stationary brother laser printer, about 10 feet to the right of the router (no interfering walls)
A stationary lexmark inket printer, about 10 feet in front of the router (behind 1 partition wall)
What can I do to troubleshoot this?

Problem solved. My router had some significant interference from a neighbours router that is no longer an issue.

  • Will a superdrive connected to USB on Airport Extreme be accessable via Wifi with a Macbook Pro Retina display?

I would like to connect 2 external drives to my Airport Extreme.
    1. A standard USB 2.0 external hard drive. No issues.
    2. An Apple Superdrive.
    Will the superdrive work over Wifi with my Macbook Pro Retina display;
Or will it only work if connected to MBP via USB port on MBP?
    Thanks

  • I dont have internet via landline, but via a dongle on mac pro, can airport extreme be used to stream music from my mac pro to sound system?

What is the best apple product for me to wireless connect my apple mac pro (wireless internet connection) to printer, itunes to sound systems etc? I do not have landline internet connection.

    UPDATE:
I have been stress testing StreamToMe in the house and  "out in the wild" and it is working very well.  There are one or two clunky steps in order to switch from the in-my-house wifi to the cellular network but it's just better (to me) than uploading about 750 GB of music that is restricted by iTunes rules and limitations to "the cloud".   The major advantage is that this solution plays more file formats than iTunes will.  In addition, I can access music files anywhere on my mac - even if they are not in my iTunes library. Playlists from iTunes are available, too.
I am not associated with this company in any way.  I am astounded that there are not more solutions available and that there are not more people discussing this issue.  Subscription models like Spotify are great and the cloud is fine for those that don't have large libraries  But when I have a humongous library and I don't want to move it around up and down to someone else's server or pay to access it after I have already paid for it I find the lack of ease of doing this baffling.
I hope that this info can help someone looking for information relating to this type of solution...

  • Can't stop audio from playing back on my MacBook Pro

First, Im new to Mac, Ive only been using it for a month, but loving it so far. =) I'm trying to record vocals in Logic Pro 9. My set up right now is MXL 990 plugged into a Phonic Firefly 302 USB interface and that is plugged into my MacPro. Now my problem isnt really with recording, I can record vocals fine. My probem is I want to hear my vocals with all the effects and plugins on when I record. But my mac wont stop playing back my dry vocals through my computer. I dont want to monitor vocals through my mac, only through logic. So i tried to go into Audio MIDI Setup and mute the playback but when I do that I cant record them in logic anymore. Its really annoying everytime I try to record hearing a version of my vocals with effects and hearing another version dry all at the same time, and they arent even in the exact same time, so you get a little slap back echo super annoying. My Audio MIDI Setup is set to "Built in Output - use this device for sound output. Phonic Firefly USB - Use this devise for sound input. I have tried setting that to the output also but it didnt do anything, still had the echo.

    Thank you for your replay
It was working on my Mac before installing the new update of Mac software. then its corrupted
from where I can ask for refund? as I bought from App Store ?

  • How can I get my OS X back to my MacBook Pro? Booted Widows 7 from a disc and have deleted all the partitions. :(

Guys! I'm new to OS X and not used to it so I tried installing Windows 7 having the thought that it's as easy as on ordinary laptops. Installation was succesfull, Installed it by first going to a "boot utility like" screen while it's still on OS X, Deleted all those partitions, Placed a Windows 7 disc in the disc drive and on the Windows installation menu I also deleted the partiotions I saw. After all that my MacBook successfuly is running Windows 7 but problems appeared like no backlight on the keyboard, Trackpad is no longger functioning well and the audio jack has this f*cking red light. :'( I admit this is all my fault and I really need to find a solution to get it running on OS X again. Please help!!! Sorry for my bad english... And also, While booting up, There is no more Apple logo but a silver screen then Windows...

A partition is just a section of the disk set aside for a particular purpose. In this case, we're talking about a Mac partition and a Windows partition. They have different formats, which is how the data is stored. The disks that came with your Mac will create the Mac partition when you install, but most likely you'll lose the Windows partition. You've got kind of a mess at this point. What you should do is install the Mac OS and get everything as you want it. Then run Bootcamp to create a Windows partition and let Bootcamp do the Windows installation for you. Grant gave you good advice earlier. Don't let Windows do any partitioning. That's how you got into this mess.
