Can AirPort make USB internet wireless to other computers?

Hi I'm very new to this whole Mac thing, and even more new to using the AirPort. Currently, everything is set up fine, we have a cable broadband plan and it's plugged into the AirPort and wireless for both my and my husband's laptops.
I've recently been shafted by my broadband supplier though, and have been looking into other plans. The most convenient cost and download-wise are all usb wireless modem plans, however!
So, my question is: if I get a USB Internet Stick (or Datacard) and go on a wireless plan, can I still wirelessly connect both computers to the net at the same time, and would I do that through the AirPort?

Hi,
An AirPort Extreme base station or an AirPort Express requires an Ethernet WAN input. The output of a USB (or ExpressCard) mobile broadband modem has to be converted (for example, through a special adapter similar to this one).
Another way, as bpbpbp already indicated, would be to use a dedicated mobile broadband router (something like this, this or this); either independently or in connection with an existing wireless (Wi-Fi) base station.
In all cases, make sure that a certain mobile broadband modem is supported before you buy. Usually, there is a list of supported devices for each mobile broadband router or special adapter.

I've got a G5, OS 10.5, and an IBook OS 10.4.  Both can reach the internet wirelesly.
How can I make them aware of each other, so they can exchange files?  Both have network
icons in the systems peferences, but I can't see how to hook them up.

That got me closer, but I'm not quite there yet.  On each ofthe two computers I've allowed all users File Sharing and Remote Management.  Each computer has an address 192.168.1.2 (or 4).  When I enter those addresses into "connect to server" the reponse is either 'drop box' or 'public folder'.  So it seems that only very basic sharing is allowed. I have'nt  set up a public folder on either one.

Sorry for my english i'm spanish

I have not tried that...I will look up the process so that I can do it correctly (and still transfer all of my files, contacts, etc).  Any suggestions?  What is the advantage of restoring as a new device..is this more akin to a complete wipe of a hard drive?

  • Can I make my desktop wireless?

I have a p6110y desktop.  Is there a wireless card already installed?  I want to move my modem and I am not sure if the PC is wireless enabled.

    Hi, alend23:
According to the product specs for your machine, there is no built in wireless adapter.
You can double check by going to the device manager. Click on the Network Adapters section. In there you should see two network devices listed--a wired one and a wireless one. If there is only one, then that is your wired adapter (probably a Realtek network adapter of some sort).
You can easily make your PC wireless by buying a USB wireless adapter and you will also need a wireless router if you don't have one already.
Here is a link to a place that sells many varieties of wireless adapters.  Look them over, read the reviews and get the one that suits you best.

  • Can AirPort Extreme join a wireless network and share the connection to ethernet connected devices?

Can AirPort Extreme join a wireless network and share the connection to ethernet connected devices?

Yes, if the AirPort Extreme is joining a wireless network that has been created by another Apple router. In this case, it will be extending the wireless network and the Ethernet ports are enabled on the "remote" AirPort Extreme.
No, if the AirPort Extreme will be used with another router from another manfacturer.
Ironically, the less expensive AirPort Express can do what you ask about with virtually any wireless network using a special feature called ProxySTA. It won't extend the wireless with a non-Apple router, but the Ethernet port will be enabled.

You can share it with other Macs under your control (not your neighbor's).  You just need to be logged in under the buying AppleID for updates or to download again.

Installed iTunes 10.5 but after I restarted my computer it won't connect to the Internet. All other computers in the house connect to Internet just fine. Help!! I Did all the regular modem diagnostics but that computer won't connect and it's a hard wire connection, not wireless (too far from the wireless signal). Is anyone else having this problem?

    Hello, might try this...
Make a New Location, Using network locations in Mac OS X ...
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2712
    10.5, 10.6, 10.7 & 10.8…
System Preferences>Network, top of window>Locations>Edit Locations, little plus icon, give it a name.
    10.5.x/10.6.x/10.7.x/10.8.x instructions...
System Preferences>Network, click on the little gear at the bottom next to the + & - icons, (unlock lock first if locked), choose Set Service Order.
The interface that connects to the Internet should be dragged to the top of the list.
IFor 10.5/10.6/10.7/10.8, System Preferences>Network, unlock the lock if need be, highlight the Interface you use to connect to Internet, click on the advanced button, click on the DNS tab, click on the little plus icon, then add these numbers...
    208.67.222.222
    208.67.220.220
(There may be better or faster DNS numbers in your area, but these should be a good test).
    Click OK.

My 5yr old iMac will not connect to the Internet. All other computers at home will, including my Mac Pro and iPad. I'm at my wits end. What should I do?

Which OS are you using (update your user profile).Try a
    SMC RESET
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
    Shut down the computer.
Unplug the computer's power cord and ALL peripherals.
    Wait 15 seconds.
    Attach the computers power cable.
Wait another 5 seconds and press the power button to turn on the computer.
The 5 second timing is important to a successful reset.

  • Can AirPort Express connect a wireless and a non-wireless at the same time

    Hello everyone,
I have both a PowerBook G4 with wireless card, and a 17 inch iMac G4. Is there a way to connect both of them to the internet using the airport express?? can the PB access via wireless and the iMac via the usb port perhaps?? right now I connect the non-wireless directly to the broadband modem using ethernet.any pointers will be really appreciated!!
    Thanks

If you have a single Airport Express then the answer is no.
The USB port is for printing only.

  • Connect none airport G4 to internet wirelessly?

    Hey all,
Hoping someone can help me out here...
I would like to connect a G4 to the internet wirelessly. There is currently no airport or wireless connectivity built in, I did go get myself an ASUS WL-167g WLAN Adapter. This does seem to pick up my wireless but drops after 1/2secs connected then on and off and on and off and so fore.
I can't seem to figure out what the issue is though, G4 tower running Tiger 10.4.11, fresh install of the ASUS drivers from the driver CD for OSX 10.4 and ISP Virgin Boardband WPA passworded but connecting all good. Seems to be when the signal strength gets too high it falls.
Hopefully that is easy enough to understand, let me know if anyone has any bright ideas that I haven't thought off. Thanks all...

Hi, I have 3 of those, they get far better signals than even the newest Airport cards for me!
I assume you're using the USB Wireless Utility?
First, get a USB extension cable & move the ASUS around to see if you get a better signal.
You can also mount i in a Pringles, Swiss Miss, or any other Aluminum foil lined can & get super directional feeds.
If it's your Router, might try changing the channel it transmits on.

  • Can't see USB disk attached to other mac

I have an Airport Express, on the network is a Mac Mini which has an USB disk attached to it (to the Mac Mini).
However, I can't see the disk from any other mac that uses the Airport (this used to work)
I've looked for "disk sharing" in Preferences and in the Airport Setup Utility, but couldn't find anything.
I've also made the Sharing & Permissions of the USB disk for "Me" and "Everyone" as " Read & Write"
Any idea how I can resolve this issue?
    Thanks,
    Awfers

Ok, thanks for clarifying. You don't need to change any settings within the AirPort Utility, but let's double-check your Mac Mini's settings to make sure that it is both sharing the disk properly and that it's OS X firewall is not blocking the requests.
For File Sharing: System Preferences > Sharing > File Sharing
o Make sure that the folders on your external hard drive, that you want shared, are selected in the Shared Folders window.
o Make sure that you have, at least, Everyone = Read Only set in the Users window.
o Select Options..., and then, verify that you have "Share files and folders using AFP" is enabled for Mac clients, and "Share files and folders using SMB" is enabled for Windows clients.
For the OS X Firewall: System Preferences > Security > Firewall
o If "Allow all incoming connections" is enabled, verify that: "File Sharing (AFP, SMB)" is now displayed in the list.

  • How can I make my interntet wireless while keeping my desktop connected?

I just got my Macbook Pro and I love it! One problem... I got airport extreme with it and I don't know how I can keep my PC desktop connected to the internet (no wireless) while having my Macbook wireless? Everyone at the Apple store just said to plug my computer in to the airport express.... What plug? I have broadband and am using an ethernet cable.... PLEASE HELP! THanks!
MacBook Pro   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

I do have airport extreme ^^. When i plug the ethernet from the computer to the aiport base it doesnt work because its not connect to the broadband... how can i fix this?
Apple's AirPort terminology can be a bit confusing as Apple uses the term AirPort Extreme for both their wireless cards and base stations. If you take a look at the following reference, you can confirm which AirPort you actually have. (ref: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107908) If your AirPort Base Station has only one Ethernet port AND it's not shaped like a "flying saucer," then most likely, it is the AirPort Express Base Station (AX).

  • HT5639 Can I use usb internet sticks and/ or printers which don't speak apple with boot camp and win 7/ 8?

    Hello all,
As a reference point for my technological skills, I work in international development and in timber framed building construction and repair. Beyond Ford full- size pick-ups pre 1993, I mostly employ 19th century systems.
This MacBook Pro is marvelous, but won't read or accept some older printers and usb internet sticks. There is also a problem with windows 8 on many of these international and older/ cheaper US devices. Will a MacBook Pro be able to communicate with them in windows 7 running on Boot Camp, or on any of the other Windows on Mac platforms? Does one work better with old stuff than another? Are any of them simpler/ more intuitive to use than others?  Any informtion or suggestions, no matter how basic would be appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Rob

I have tried it with all 3 options. I tried the first two options with the printer plugged into port 1 on the adapter and the third option with the printer plugged into port 2. This means that I may have effectively installed all 3 options/scripts. Do I need to throw them away and start again?
Running the Choose Serial Port script writes a file that is used in processing print jobs. If you run the script a second time, it will replace the existing file with a new file.
Do I also need to configure these ports in the network settings under System Preferences?
    No.
I notice too that no 'location' is given for the Stylewriter II, whereas a location is given for my other (Lexmark) printer, which is connected to the G5 iMac directly via a USB cable.
That is of no consequence. Use of the Location field is optional.
I would suggest you proceed as follows:
    1. Go to the /Library/Receipts folder at the root of your hard drive. Delete the item Foomatic for StyleWriter.pkg.
    2. Start the installation over from the beginning. Install the Foomatic for StyleWriter software.
    3. Run the Choose Serial Port for StyleWriter script. Upon further reflection of your possible use of two Keyspan adapters, I would suggest you choose the serial port with the format USA28X...P1.1 rather than KeySerial1.
    4. Run the Add StyleWriter to Printer List.
Try printing a document. If it still does not work, download a troubleshooting script from my website http://webpages.charter.net/mbroughtn/downloads/Test7Stylewriter.command.zip Run the script. Copy and paste the contents of the Terminal window in a reply. That should point to what is going wrong.

  • E72 internet sharing with other computers

I am having problems with my modem at home and am only able to access the internet via my E72 connected via USB to my computer. Is it possible to share this internet connection with other users on my home wireless network?

You can share the internet access from your phone to other devices by using the Joikuspot application. His effectively turns your phone into a wifi hotspot. There is the premium Joikuspot or Joikuspot light which is free but has limited security. Both are available for download from www.ovi.com.
