Can aluminum outer case be replaced?

I have a 2008-09 version 15 inch MacBook Pro laptop.  I dropped my briefcase from about 2 feet.  The corner the laptop was damaged, still works fine, but ports don't line up with port hardware inside the outer case.
Can case be repaired/replaced and what would average cost be?
Thanks,  JRehling11

HI!
There is a slight chance that you will be able to simply take apart and put back together the housing of your computer and everything be fine. However, more than likely you will have to buy a completely new case for your computer which will cost you a pretty penny.

Is it possible to replace the aluminum outer case the laptop comes in?
My wife was using my mac and droped it,
on the front left corner there is a dent,
and it is affecting my CD's that I put in my Mac
I have to loosen the screws on the bottom to get the CD's out....
Can I change out the entire outer shell ... Tack the components out and put them in a new shell????

    Three places you can look:

Or, you can go to an Apple store & inquire about "Flat Rate Repair". Not documented, but users have used such. Cost is around US $300.

  • Replacing the outer case??

I was wondering if that in the future if your ipod nano or any other ipod gets so scratched that, can you actually send it somewhere like to apple and pay for a new outer case to be replaced? kind of like buying a new one?
I read the article about buying Bresno and lceaning it with that but what if your scratches are to deep?

    Hi
I think you would be able to buy new covers but the price will be more for the parts than to buy an new ipod.
I saw on one site that they sold to ipod g4 frontcover for 80 dollars and a
    display for 149 dollar.

Can you get a battery replacement at an Apple store while you wait? What would the rough cost be, out of warranty?

I am not sure what device you are trying to replace the battery on, but usually the battery is at least 30% of the cost of the device from what I have read. Apple likes to keep a monopoly on batteries I think. I have never seen them replace a battery at the store, usually they have to ship it out. You can find batteries for sale online, but you will have to crack the device open yourself.

  • Bulging battery in Egypt.  Can I get an out of warranty replacement somehow?

The subject pretty much says it all.  I'm living in Egypt but bought my first generation black MacBook in the US in 2006.  Earlier this year I noticed the battery bulging to the point where getting it in the case is problematic.  I know this is an issue with many Apple batteries for some reason.  Is there a way to get an out of warranty replacement sent here?
A pic here for those interested.

I highly doubt if Apple will grant a warranty exception for a battery that is 6 years old. Just purchase a new one.

  • My iPhone is water damaged, can I still qualify for the out-of-warranty replacement eventhough I bought it in Mexico?

My iPhone 4s was water damaged, and I want to know if I can have an out-of-warranty replacement if I take it to a US apple store eventhough I bought it in Mexico.

I don't think so, but doesn't hurt to try.

  • Can i make use of the out of warranty replacement deal in the USA if im/my iphone is from Europe?

Well my iPhone 4 got water damage and looks dead to me, even putting it in a rice bag. So I read that there is an out of warranty replacement in the USA for $199. In a few days I'll be in the States... so I want to ask if it will be possible for me to get my European iPhone replaced in the US Apple Store?

Very, very unlikely as the iPhone warranty is generally valid only in the country of purchase.  The out of warranty replacement is also valid in Europe.  Just hop on down to your local Apple store for the exchange.

  • Can I get my screen replaced at the apple store?

I dropped my phone and cracked my screen. Ive heard that you can have the screen replaced. Where and how can I have this done?

Apple doesn't fix the screen, it replaces the phone.  You can bring your phone in to your nearest Apple Store, or call Apple Care and arrange to send your phone in to Apple.
Since accidental damage is NOT covered by any manufacturer's warranty, you will pay $149.00 for an out of warranty replacement for any iPhone beside the 4S.  For the 4S, it's $199.00, unless you've purchased AppleCare+, in which case you'll pay $50.00

  • HT202450 Where do I get one of these  "bottom case foot replacement DIY kits"?

Where do I get one of the "bottom case foot replacement DIY kits" as mentioned here: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5236

I have had the same situation ,3 of the 4 rubber foot felt down for some time and i manage to deal with this situation recentlly.I was thinking to change to whole back(have some scratches on the back cuz of the missing feet) but the Genius Bar representative told me is more then 100$ and gave up on the idea  .
It cost me 30$(10$/foot...ridiculously expensive if you ask me because, i was out of apple care protection plan) and they mounted for me in about 20 minutes.
If you are still under apple care, you'll likelly be covered for the cost.
If you are not someone told me the feet can be purchased from Apple Care(2 feet per DIY kit, about 15$ per kit + S&H.The Apple Kit contains everything except the screwdriver (feet, alcoholl swabs, superglue).
Try to contact Apple to ask or try a bit more research.
    Hope that helped.....Good Luck!!!

  • Original Iphone 2g needs an Out-of-Warranty replacement

I have an Original Iphone 2g.  It is broken and needs an Out-of-Warranty replacement.  However, I live in Canada and went to talk to a genius at and Apple store here who told me that because it was never available in Canada he can't touch it. He said I could drive down to the States, but that is quite the mission.  I am just wondering what my options might be besides that?  Can I not just mail it into apple?  I don't want them to charge me $99999.99 for diagnostic fees, mail and then they say a replacement is not possible.
    Thanks,
    JR

The original iPhone was indeed never released in Canada, so you would have to drive to the US for service or send it someone you know in the US who could take it to Apple on your behalf and then return it to you (Apple will not accept out-of-country shipments nor ship the replacement out of the US). You could still get it replaced at an Apple Store for $149 US:
    http://www.apple.com/support/iphone/service/faq/
Going through a third-party shop may be cheaper, but again it may not, depending on what's wrong with the iPhone. In either case I don't know if that old iPhone is worth it. It might be better to put the money toward a new iPhone; you can get a new unlocked 3GS for CA$375 from the Apple Store.
    Regards.

  • Does my phone qualify for out of warranty replacement?

    Hi all,
I have just dropped a dumbbell on my iphone 3GS, (dohhh!), the screen has cracked at the top but shattered down the bottom. The phone is still on and charges however i cant use touch screen at the bottom where it has shattered, there allso tiny bits of loose glass at this part.
The phone is out of warranty but would I qualify for the out of warranty replacement? I would jsut go to Apple and ask but its not very close!

Apple does not fix iDevices. Instead, they exchange yours for a refurbished or new replacement depending upon the age of your device and refurbished inventories. On rare occasions when there are no longer refurbished units for your older model, they may replace it with the next newer model.
ATTN: Beginning July 2013 Apple Stores are now equipped to do screen repairs/replacements in-house on iPhone 5 and 5C. In some cases while you wait. • Crack in outer case / screen bezel on 20" iMac G5 getting worse by the week

Just wondering if anyone else is having this problem ...?
About a month ago, I noticed a very small crack in the bottom left-hand corner of my iMac's outer casing - at first I thought it was a mould mark that occassionally picked up sunlight coming into the room in the mornings, as in the evenings it was barely noticabable - but more recently I it has increased in length and can be clearly seen in any light ...
Have a look at these photos .... one is with a flash & one without ...
    http://tinyurl.com/ejjq6
    http://tinyurl.com/hvrpg
My estimate is this crack is now growing by the week but I am not sure exactly why ... also, for the past couple of months - more & more CD's & DVDs are falling out of the 'slot load' without halting after an eject - I have also had a power supply issue recently where my machine keeps switching itself off randomly and without warning (at present I can only use it successfully for lite duties such as checking emails in Entourage & browsing) .... and my hunch is that something inside my machine is getting hot and has warped or buckled the casing.
This machine has been on my desk since new about 9 months ago - the room temparaure is around 22º - 29º celcius (70º - 85º farenheit) on average. It's never been moved or shipped anywhere & is not likely to have been damaged by anything else - as the space is mininal with a bed, desk chair & my Mac - I also live alone and am the only one who has ever used it and that 'direct sunlight' I mentioned earlier is minimal ... so it's a total mystery as to how & why this crack has appeared ...
I would like to know if anyone else has noticed any cracks in the outer casings of your iMacs .... there were a couple of previous threads from late last year, but as these have been archived I could not reply to them so have started a new post ...
you can see previous case-cracking thread here: --> http://tinyurl.com/nr2wx
And - can any of the Mac Daddy's (you know who you are in these forums give me some advice on how best to approach Apple to have it checked ?? My machine still has 3 months left of it's initial 1 year warranty - it goes in for a PSU check and/or replacement in 1 week - but something tells me I might be not be taken too seriously regarding the crack in my machine ...

Boomer ... thanks for your reply ...
Regarding my Apple approach - I went through the iBook logic board fiasco, way back in the early days before it was acknowledged by Apple to be a manufacturing flaw. The company here in Auckland who are the Apple representatives for New Zealand is a company called Renaissance (our official Apple head office is actually in Sydney, Australia) - when I first informed them of my iBook 700 starting up to a garbled start-up screen and then freezing, they told me I must have dropped it and would not consider repairing it under warranty or Apple Care. Many months of conversations, tests by Apple service technicians and eventually, talks with the management at Renaissance, and out of pocket expenses by me, eventually got me nowhere and the final conclusion was that I had misused my machine and it would not be repaired under warranty. After several discouraging months later, I eventually sold it as spare parts for a fraction of what I had paid for it ... 6 months later the iBook Logic Board fault was acknowledged - but for me, it came way too late ...
    Fast forward 3 years …
I purchased my iMac G5 last July, which has now developed a serious power supply issue where it randomly shuts down without warning when processing an average size (350MBs) video file in Toast or resizing a medium size image in Photoshop with the internal fans going ballistic on a regular basis whenever a heavy task is laid on the processor - and more recently, the crack in the lower-left hand corner growing larger. Also, the disks falling out of the slot-load - & all this from a machine which apart from the above - looks in minted brand new condition ... because it really hasn't had that much use in it’s short life - if it was new car, it would only have done about 20,000kms ...
My point is. Although the PSU issue is widely acknowledged and the one in my machine is most likely to be checked & replaced by Apple NZ free-of-charge - I feel that I might not be so lucky with the cracked case. The level of service here in New Zealand I would say is but a fraction of the support one might receive in Australia & the States – or at least for me it appears that way ... you would not believe that 'attitude' I have come up against when dealing with managers at Renaissance – and any request to have a speedy check done on my iMac by 3 separate service centres will take more than a week (closer to 2 weeks) to complete as the replacement PSU has to be ordered, then shipped from Australia – there is no such thing as a routine ‘same day or next day’ service or repair! I have lodged the crack complaint with Apple Australasia through our local help-line which diverts automatically to the Apple Customer Liaison desk in Australia but when I spoke to a local service centre, an Apple tech suggested it was unlikely to be replaced if there were no other ‘documented’ accounts of cracks on other 20” G5 iMacs anywhere else. And even without seeing it, he suggested the crack has most likely been caused by ‘blunt force’.
And as I know that is not the case, I sense I am in for another battle with the honchos at Renaissance who will most likely decline the repair or replacement of the casing under warranty.
Hence the reason for this post – I am trying to gather information to help support my case. I am adamant this crack has appeared on it’s own and has not been hit by anything blunt or due to misuse.
You might be asking why I have not just taken it in already to have all 3 things checked at the same time?
Firstly, the fans started acting up about 2-3 months ago – I have performed several maintenance tasks on my machine since then (resetting the power parameters: resetting VRAM & PRAM), & other maintenance tasks (Ethernet/network tweaks & running Yasu to refresh the system) & which combined, reduced the fan noise by about 50%, & that’s something I considered I could live with, considering the amount of others in these forums who are experiencing the same problem. I figured the iMac G5 is always going to be noisy – because no-one in these forums has posted an absolute fix yet - I didn’t see the point in taking it in and being without a machine for 2 weeks, only to be told there was nothing wrong with it. It was also around this time that CDs & DVDs began falling from the slot load & down the back of my desk.
Then the crack came to my attention about a month ago, which I reported immediately to the help line (including the excessive fan noise) and was issued a specific ‘case number’– again, I was told to bring it in to a local service centre but when I called to arrange a time to drop off, I was again told it would take up to 2 weeks for an assessment – that’s when the tech suggested the crack was not a defect but damage caused by a blunt object and was unlikely to be covered under warranty.
My alarm bells starting ringing when I heard that, & I could see myself re-experiencing the long-winded battle with Apple NZ again to be taken seriously.
I was actually in the process of winding down my current assignment, (which is worth $2,000 to me) in preparation of not having a machine for 2 weeks to fix the PSU as I do not have another unit with which to work on - when my iMac started randomly switching itself off without warning last week – as a result, I have had to persevere at a snails pace – saving my work every 2 mins, as I have to get this project finished before I can afford to hire a replacement machine in the interim ….
    I am stuck in a catch-22.
My machine will be going in this Monday to have all 4 malfunctions inspected: fans, PSU, cracked casing & the disc eject problem … my expectation is to have all 4 issues repaired under warranty as I have looked after this machine, as with any other machine or appliance I own – with love & with care !!
To round it all up - and I apologise for the drawn-out and rather convoluted explanation, but I am trying to find others who might also be having case/bezel issues with their G5 iMacs, which could hopefully support my claim when I come up against the impending ‘NO’ regarding the cracked casing …

  • Is Apple about to introduce a replacement for iWeb?? and where can I download iWeb to replace the one I lost??

Having spent a little time searching for a replacement download for iWeb (details of why below)  it seems that I cannot find it anywhere in Apple Land.  From my limited experience here (iphone,  macbook pro, airport extreme and airport express)  it looks like Apple gradually withdraws stuff prior to introducing something really exciting  to replace it.
    So
Question:   Is there a new super replacement for iWeb about to be introduced?
I cannot believe that Apple would take away something as great as iWeb (having read reviews and used it myself as a complete web novice)  without giving us something better.
I foolishly followed some genius advice and did a wipe/reload of Lion, prior to updating to Mountain Lion (my fault, I thought my lovely Macbook Pro was running a little slow - probably wasnt - just me being impatient.) Anyway, long story short,  I lost iphoto (got it back by re-purchasing but would like a refund - another string running with this),   iWeb - can't find it anywhere - asked questions here in Apple Land and am getting some conflicting answers.
I am sat in London without my iweb for a some days and would really like to get on with a bit of web stuff.
Question:  is there anywhere in Apple Land where I can download iWeb
Question:  can you confirm that the iweb programme will be on one of the disks that came with the machine?   (they are 100 miles away so I will have to wait, unless there is an easier way)
    Sorry,  rambling a bit.
Hope you can help out there
    Thanks
    Steve

The iWeb application was specifically created to be used with .Mac and then MobileMe and Apple withdrew support for iWeb several months ago, when it was announced that MobileMe would be no longer and would be replaced by iCloud.  MobileMe ceased at the end of June this year and has been replaced by iCloud, that does not offer web hosting, so no need for iWeb.
Apple stopped selling iWeb in its stores several months ago and has withdrawn support for iWeb, so no, you won't find either iWeb or iDVD for sale in the Mac App Store because Apple no longer sells it.
You cannot download iWeb, so if you want iWeb, you will have to purchase the iLife 11 boxed set from Amazon and this contains iWeb 09 which is the latest version of iWeb.  Apple does not sell this either.
If your Mac was running Snow Leopard, then it would have come with installation CD's, so yes, you should be able to re-load the whole of the iLife series, which includes iWeb, iDVD and iPhoto back onto your Mac running Mountain Lion.  You did not need to make an additional purcahse of iPhoto from the Mac App Store - you could have re-loaded from these CD's.  The only place you will get a refund is by contacting the Mac App Store. Nobody here can help you with that.
So if you want iWeb back, check to see if it is on you installation CD's - it should be if you have a Mac running Snow Leopard and put it back on your Mac from there.  If not, then your only option is to purchase the iLife 11 boxed set from Amazon and you can load iWeb from there.
As Apple no longer supports iWeb and there is no MobileMe any longer, then there are unikely to be any further updates to the programme and nothing else will come along.  You can still use the app though if you have it and it works with Mountain Lion, however, there may come a time when it won't work with future iOS updates, so it would pay you to look at the alternatives out there which are many and varied.  Take a look at RapidWeaver, Sandvox, Freeway Pro/Express, Flux 4 etc.  You can download free trials of most and some are for sale in the Mac App Store.
Also, please be advised that this is a user to user forum and everyone here who replies to you is a user, so you are not talking directly to Apple here.
Give Apple feedback directly by going to http://www.apple.com/feedback.
