Can an AE BS have older Macs on the wireless network?
Here' one for you all. Have my new BS running smoothly (can't believe how blazingly fast it is compared to my older Linksys DSL router). Anyway tried to connect one of my old desktops (DP500 G4,, remember those?) which has an airport card installed that it came with (i.e. old protocol?). This desktop could not connect either with the network with WP2 (or whatever) encryption (which was properly selected in the DP500 airport connection), despite the correct password, or to the guest network which is not encrypted at all, again despite proper selection. It tried to connect for a bit, then said it couldn't.
When the new 1000mbs ethernet switch arrives I will have enough ports to connect it via a cat 5 cable. Just curious it the BS Extreme is backward compatible.

Yes, it can and does. I just don't have an available ethernet port right now as the BS has 3 LAN ports (and the old Linksys router I replaced had 4). As soon as the network switch arrives, I will reconnect it via the ethernet port. I have plugged it into the BS via ethernet, and the connection works (w/ Internet, etc). It just won't successfully complete a connection to either (encrypted or guest) airport network.

Since upgrading my iPhone5 to the newest iOS (6.1.2) I can longer connect to WiFi. It sees the wireless network but will not connect.. Other devices in my home that weren't upgraded can connect just fine.
I had the same problem. I did the reset networks on my iPhone & it did not work. My husband read somewhere that changing the channel on the router to manual & selecting the highest available channel number might help. I did that & it solved the problem. I have not had the problem since.

I have multiple macs, on 1 wireless network, never both online at same time
So here's the problem. I have an imac and a macbook air. I've been using my airport express for my wireless network. I've setup the airport express to have its own network name, and its password protected.
I've never had a problem with the express, its always been distributing wireless just fine. And I never have any problems connecting to the internet... EXCEPT if i have multiple macs on my network. (Before wasn't so much a problem, unless a friend came over. But now I have two macs).
On a daily basis, 9 times out of 10, if 1 mac is online, the other 1 get's booted. It acts as if they only have 1 IP address or something to work with from the express. Sometimes renewing my dhcp lease will fix the connection on a computer, but only to boot the other one off. And back and forth this goes sometimes. On other occasions, both lose their connections and cant get an ip address at all; forcing me to refresh the express to factory settings and resetting it all up.
I'm just trying to figure out what i might be missing, or why this keeps happening to me. All software is up to date, and it only happens to multiple macs (My room mate has a pc, but when i had only 1 mac we never had this problem).

Some questions about your settings:
In AirPort Utility, if you do a "manual setup" on your AirPort Express, In the "Internet" panel what settings do you see for
- Internet Connection/Connection Sharing
- DHCP/DHCP Beginning Address (three fields)
- DHCP/DHCP Ending Address
What is "upstream" from your AirPort Express? -
Why does my mac use the wireless network when the wired network (faster) is available?
My mac is connected to my gigabit wired network, but insists on using the (decidedly slower) wireless network. When I connect the ethernet cable, I can see that Ethernet moves to the top of the list in my network options... but investigation using the Network Utility shows that all the data is still transferred over AirPort unless I disable it. That shouldn't be necessary.
Do you NEED Airport and Ethernet on at the same time?
Like @PAHU said you can use Locations to set up a different connection and/or network when you only need the Wireless.
Setting a "Location" is an excellent way to separate the networks. If you use a "Location" for DSL/Cable and another for "File Sharing" then you can set up which "connection" you want to use and can turn off the others. Or a wireless OR wired Network.
If you also go to the left side of the Network window and select Airport and turn it OFF and you won't have to worry about it anymore. You will have to set each "connection" for each "Location".
I have all my computers hooked to a wired Gigabit switch and the Wired/Wireless router is connected to that. I have "Ethernet-DSL", "Wireless DSL", "DSL OFF", "Wireless Games", "Ethernet Games" (also for file transfers between computers) all on different networks. Takes all of 5 seconds to switch back and forth. -

Get more information about your computer. Go to the Apple in the upper left corner of any window, then "About This Mac". Write down what it says about "version"and report that here. Now continue to "More Info..." Copy and paste the information here, but omit the serial number and Hardware UUID (if present).

The main issue might be having too little RAM. Most computers run newer systems more smoothly with more RAM than Apple says is a "minimum" for running that system version
After installing 10.6.3 run the updater to 10.6.8, then upgrade iTunes.

The new system should install on top of the old one. That said, things have been known to go wrong and it makes sense to do a backup before installing the new system. In fact you seem to care about your files and things so you need to always have a backup because one day you will wake up and you hard drive will be dead and everrything on it gone. Buy an external hard drive and start using Time Machine or something to back up. The other risk is when you install the new iTunes. It doesn't happen frequently given the millions of users but there are daily posts here from people who for some reason the installation wiped out their whole library. If you have a backup then there's nothing to worry about.
This is well within what many people can do at home. It's a matter of inserting an optical disc and clicking you way through menus. -

The Apple TV 2 doesn't show up under devices like the Apple TV 1, to send video and music to the Apple TV you need to use the Airplay Option which appears in the lower right corner of iTunes. -
I have a Mac on my home network and also a Systemline music server on same network. My PC was able to find the server but my MAC cannot. I can ping the server from the mac, but cannot actually connect . Also can't add the mac as a location from server, despite following the Systemline instructions that impy this can be done.

Can't transfer files from my PC to my new Mac over our wireless network
I have a Linksys WRT54G router connected to a cable modem, which is connected to a desktop PC. I have a Dell laptop connected to the internet wirelessly, and my MacBook Pro is also connected to the internet wirelessly. No problem there, the internet works on both.
However, I'm trying to transfer my files from the Dell to my new MacBook, and I get to the point where it asks for my username and password. I've typed in everything I can think of, and the Mac gives me Error -43, 'something or other is not found'.
I don't remember ever assigning myself a username or password when I set up the wireless network. I've had no problem connecting to the Internet with the Dell laptop, but have never been able to share files or a printer with the desktop PC to which the router is connected.

Change your router channel. Sometimes this is all you will have to do.
Power cycling the router. Read the router's user manual or contact their tech support for instructions.
System Preferences/Internet & Network/Network
Unlock the padlock
Locations: Automatic
Highlight Airport
Click the Assist Me button
In the popup window click the Diagnostic button.
System Preferences/Network- Unlock padlock. Highlight Airport. Network Name-select your name. Click on the Advanced button. Airport/Preferred Networks-delete all that is not your network.
Place a check mark next to "Remember networks this computer has joined." Click the OK button and lock the padlock. Restart your computer.

No internet connection (wireless)
Check to see if an extra entry is present in the DNS Tab for your wireless connection (System Preferences/Network/Airport/Advanced/DNS).
Delete all extra entries that you find.
Place a check mark next to "Remember networks this computer has joined."

Why when playing downloaded music on my mac through my appletv (I have distributed audio so play it through speakers not actually on the television), which is sent wireless from mac to the apple tv, does the music sometimes skip like a scratched record or stop playing (in pause mode) altogether and won't start again when I hit play? I have full bars on the wireless icon. Anyone experience this?
