Can an airport extreme be used as an airport express?

Can an airport extreme be used as an airport express?

With the newer extreme, I was looking for better coverage
In theory, you might expect better performance. Apple added two additional antennas and moved them up to the top of the "tower" in the "new" Extreme.
But my "new" Extreme really performs about the same as the previous version Extreme. It might be a bit better range wise, but nothing significant here. If you are looking for really noticeable improvement, you will likely be disappointed.
just want to know if the old extreme can funciton as an express to extend the signal to another part of the house
Yes, it can, but in order to do this effectively, it must be located where it can receive a strong signal to be able to extend it. In this regard, the device can only "extend" the quality of signal that it receives.
You lose a portion of the network speed with each device that you use to extend wirelessly, so adding another device to extend wirelessly may not help at all.  It would be much better if you could connect the "new" Extreme and "old" Extreme together using a wired Ethernet cable.....since there is no signal loss that way.

Can I connect a 4 TB USB drive to the airport extreme and use it as a network drive for Time Machine

Yes, if the drive is formatted in Mac OS Extended (Journaled).
The USB port on the Time Capsule is under powered, so you may need use a powered USB hub with the 4 TB drive...even if it has its own power supply.

  • Can airport extreme connect using a mac mini.  the base station is not recognized so i cannot configure it manually

can airport extreme connect using a mac mini.  this airport extreme wont connect to internet via my cable modem.  I cant set it to bridge mode because it doesnt appear as a base station in airport utitlity...help

First, is your AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBS) a 802.11n, 802.11g, or 802.11b model? Second, what is your primary goal for using this base station? Finally, is the AEBS the only router in your current network configuration?

  • Can AirPort Extreme be used as a signal extender?

Can AirPort Extreme be used as a wireless extender, wi fi booster?

If you are planning to "extend" wirelessly......the AirPort Extreme will "extend" the wireless signal from another Apple wireless router....but....it will not "extend" the wireless signal from a 3rd party router.

  • Can Airport extreme be used as a repeater from the BT home hub

can Airport extreme be used as a repeater from the BT home hub because my laptop will be very far away and i currently get a rubbish signal on my Windows pc so when i upgrade to the mac pro i am wonderimg if i could use the airport extreme as a repeater to strenthen my already rubbish signal??

You might want to check with BT to see if they have a device to do what you want.
Using wireless only, the AirPort Extreme will only "extend" or "repeat" the wireless signal if it has been produced by another Apple router. It is not compatible with routers from other suppliers for this purpose.

  • How can I force my Second Generation Airport Extreme to use 2.4GHz when extending the network of my Fifth Generation Airport Extreme?

    Hi,
Would be great if anyone can help.  I have setup my Second Generation Airport Extreme to extend the network of the Fifth Generation Airport Extreme.  The 2nd generation Airport extreme seems to automatically get set to use 5GHz vs 2.4GHz.  I would like to force it to use 2.4GHz so my older devices can connect to it.  Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Mike.

Enable the option to assign a different name to the 5 GHz network on your 5th Gen AirPort Extreme.
Then, the 2nd Gen Extreme will only "see" the 2.4 GHz network, and extend that signal.
If you are not sure how to do this, post back to tell us what operating system you are using on your computer so we will know what version of AirPort Utility you are using....so we can provide the correct steps for the setup.

  • Can Airport Extreme be used to back up my computer without an external hard drive?

I was recently told that I could back up my computer on an Airport Extreme with out an external hard drive.  Is this true?  My iMac is currently connected to an Airport Extreme that is also connected to an external hard drive.  It has been my understanding that an Airport Extreme is used to connect to WI-FI and to periferals such as a printer etc.  Am I confusing Airport Extreme, Airport Time Capsule and Time Machine?  Need help!

Am I confusing Airport Extreme, Airport Time Capsule and Time Machine?  Need help!
Just a bit. Both the AirPort Extreme and the Time Capsule are wireless routers provided by Apple. The main difference between them is that the Time Capsule has a built-in hard drive. Both routers also support attached USB hard drives.
Time Machine, on the other hand, is a software product that provides for a means to back up Mac computers. It can back up to hard drives attached to the Mac or located on the network. Time Machine can also back up to USB hard drives attached to the 6th generation AirPort Extreme and any generation of the Time Capsule. Finally, Time Machine can back up to the internal hard drive in a Time Capsule. Actually that is the primary reason for the Time Capsule ... although it can also use its internal drive for general storage as well.
Hopefully that help demystify things a bit.

  • How to setup airport extreme A1034 using snow leopard?

I bought a used Airport Extreme A1034 and, barring that it is not broken, am I able to set it up as wireless base station?  I am using snow leopard, I currently use an airport express as a wireless router.  I cannot get the airport extreme to appear in my airport utility wirelessly.  It will appear in the airport utility if it is connect to my Mac via ethernet, but when I go to save the settings and the device goes to reseet, it just does not come back online.  I have done numerous factory default resets.  Any advice?

Please check out the following Apple Support article on how to configure a WDS.

want to buy airport extreme, am using mountain lion.  Will this work ?  also,  my house is 5,500 square feet all on one floor.  Do I need an extender and which one?

...  If I purchase an express to extend is it hard to configure as an extender?
No, AirPort Utility prompts you with step-by-step questions and makes configuration simple.
The Express and Extreme have the same transmitter power specifications, so I suggest the $99 Express as an extender, should you need one. Beware that you cannot add a second Express to wirelessly extend the network any further - as the following excerpt from Extending the range of your wireless network by adding additional Wi-Fi base stations explains:
    Extended network range considerations
In the above example the primary Wi-Fi base station ➊ is out of wireless range of the extended Wi-Fi base station ➋, therefore the extended Wi-Fi base station cannot join or extend the wireless network. The extended Wi-Fi base station must be moved to a location that is within Wi-Fi range of the primary Wi-Fi base station.
    Important Note
If another extended Wi-Fi base station ➋ is placed between the primary Wi-Fi base station ➊ and the extended Wi-Fi base station ➌, the extended Wi-Fi base station ➌ will not allow clients to join it. All extended Wi-Fi base stations must be in direct range of the primary Wi-Fi base station.
A "roaming network" that Bob described, in which all base stations are connected with an Ethernet cable, is by far the best alternative.

  • Airport Extreme doesn't recoginze second Airport Express

I have an Airport Extreme base station and one Airport Express that's been working fine for years. I have a second Airport Express that I'd like to add but can't seem to get it to work. I've entered the MAC address of the 2nd Express into the Airport Utility, have both Express' listed, check mark in the "Allow wireless clients," did the "Update" but the 2nd Express just blinks amber while the first one is fine with a solid green light.
    Any thoughts?

It sounds like you're attempting to add a second remote base station in a WDS with the other two. Is this correct? If so, try temporarily connecting the second AirPort Express Base Station (AX) directly to the AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBS) by Ethernet, and then, use the AirPort Utility to configure it.

  • Extending a wireless signal with an Airport Extreme Base Station, and an Airport Express as the "repeater".

I understand that I can extend Airport Extreme wirless "reach" with an Airport Express, but how?  I've read through the posts and they say to "connect" the Airport Express.  What does that mean, to an outlet, to an ethernet cable, what?

I understand that I can extend Airport Extreme wirless "reach" with an Airport Express, but how?
Enable the option on the AirPort Extreme to "Allow this network to be extended"
Then configure the AirPort Express to "Extend a wireless network"
If you do it this way, the AirPort Express connects to the AirPort Extreme using wireless only.
If you have the ability to run an Ethernet cable from the AirPort Extreme to the AirPort Express and leave it connected permanently, that will provide better performance than the "wireless only" type of connection.

  • New Airport Extreme cannot be found by Airport Utility

Previous to purchasing this new Airport Extreme(DualBand "N") I had the older model Airport Extreme. I also have two Airport Express devices. Previously, all 3 were detected immediately by Airport Utility and NEVER dropped off.
Last week I replaced my Airport Extreme with a new one so that I could use the dual band feature and the guest access.
Since then I cannot get Airport Utility to discover/find the new Airport Extreme. I can ONLY access it by using the Airport Utility > Configure Other... option.
I've tried removing all devices except Airport Extreme.
I've tried Airport Utility by wirelessly connecting to Airport Extreme.
I've tried Airport Utility by hard wiring to Airport Extreme.
    I've tried factory default settings
    I've tried factory reset
    I've tried setting values manually
    I've tried setting values automatically
I've tried older Airport Extreme firmware versions
I've tried older Airport Utility software versions
I've tried running Airport Utility from laptop
I've tried running Airport Utility from desktop
I've tried running Airport Utility from remote desktop
    I've tried waiting
What is the problem with this device/software ????? I should add that at this moment the Airport Extreme firmware and Airport Utility are both fully updated.
    Thanks,

  • How to extend the range of my Airport Extreme network by adding an Airport Express

How to extend the range of my Airport Extreme network by adding an Airport Express?

You have to make sure that the AirPort Express is in Factory Default Settings. If it is straight out of the box, it is ready to be configured.
The instructions that I will provide are for using AirPort Utility 6.0, which you have.
Locate the Express in the same room as the AirPort Extreme for the configuration. Power it up and allow a full minute for the Express to display a blinking amber light.
Make sure that the wireless is turned on your Mac
Open AirPort Utility 6.0 and look at the small rectangle in the upper left hand corner of the display. It should now read something like "Other AirPort Base Stations (1)"
Click on the rectangle, and then click on the AirPort Express xxxxxx listing
AirPort Utility will take a minute or two to analyze the settings on your network and then suggest that  the Express be configured to "Extend" your wireless network.
Edit the Base Station name to your liking, then click Next in the lower right hand corner
Allow a full minute or two let AirPort Utility do its work
When you see Setup Complete, click Done at the lower right of the window.
Now move the AirPort Express to a location that is approximately half way between the AirPort Extreme and the area that needs more wireless coverage.
    You should be in business.
